Book Description
SCENE DESIGN AND STAGE LIGHTING, Eighth Edition, continues its tradition of being the most detailed and comprehensive text available in the scenic and lighting design and technology fields. Much of the scenery design and technology section has been re-worked with an emphasis on modern technology. Changes in the lighting section reflect current practice and technology. The authors have placed an emphasis on collaboration in all sections of the new text. "Designers at Work" interviews with professional lighting and scenery designers are a new addition to the Eighth Edition. In addition, the entirely re-written section on sound for the theatre reflects the digital age we live and work in.

An indispensable reference book for all theatre techies !.......2000-04-12
Working backstage? Asked by your local community theatre to pitch in doing props? Foolishly said, "Of course I can build a tree(Silly fool only God can)! Here are the helpful hints and clues that will point you in the right direction without looking like a total fool. Design, construction, lights and sound- Oren Parker has it all. This latest edition is my third copy! They just keep getting better and better. This "rumor" best explains the abilities of one of the authors. A colleague once related the story in which Oren Parker showed up in the university scene shop in a three piece suit, painted a full back drop and walked out without a drop of paint on the suit. I'd be interested in knowing how true this is but not any less impressed with how informative this book has been for me. Well worth the exorbitant price.
Invaluable guide for novices and professionals.......2000-04-06
I can't tell you how often I've found myself saying "I'm a carpenter, not a designer!" when asked to design a set. I've always muddled through, but now, with this book in hand, I've found 100% more confidence in my designs. Invaluable for the lighting designer who wants to better understand scenic design, and for the scenic designer who wants to understand lighting design. Buy it!

Usefull text.......2006-02-20
I'm a lighting design major in college, and no matter what I take a class in, Gillette's book is the standard must have for all tech (and acting) majors. It's a requirement for stage tech 1, and then is used again through out the college carreer, and I have heard people even refrence it after they graduate. The best places to start for new techies are this book, and the 'backstage handbook'
EXCELENT!! VERY COMPLETE.......2005-10-11
I think its an amazing book! very complete, it tells you about the roles of every one involved, the make up, scene design, construction, sound, costume and lighting, so if you are serious about becoming an excelent theatrical designer and producer, then this is the best place to start!! from here you can buy other books, but this is a must have!

Blurbs masquerading as comments.......2007-01-09
I usually find Amazon readers' comments valuable, but after buying this book, Setting Up Your Scenes, I noticed that several of the five-star reviews also appear word-for-word in the front of the book as blurbs, probably solicited as back-scratching by the publisher and author, which suggested to me that the only meaningful comments here are the negative ones. I returned the book and will more carefully consider any Michael Weise products I find on Amazon.
be careful.......2006-04-19
Inspired by the infamously atrocious 'Setting up your shots', this book is a sad departure from Pepperman's vastly superior 'the eye is quicker'. Most of the text is setting the scene in context (unnecessary if you've seen the film) and the rest is slight explanation of the shots, none of which is lined up with the frames making it a real hassle to read.
It deserves two stars, but given Pepperman's mates have provided the five stars I think one is appropriate in this instance.
I'm bitterly disappointed, I'd been waiting for this book for awhile. Buy Pepperman's other book instead it's excellent and in a whole different league to this one.
Scenes are from:
butch cassidy
dial m
french connection
jean de florette
my beautiful laundrette
rosemary's baby
sophie's choice
3 days of the condor
two women
burnt by the sun
children of a lesser god
colonol redl
fanny & alexander
400 blows
kolya
the little fugitive
the white balloon
atlantic city
the battle of algiers
chinatown
and 15 other films.
Scene Structure Explained.......2005-11-23
Published in a horizontal "landscape" format, this book is a must-read for film and video editors. Pepperman is a long time editor and the author of "The Eye is Quicker: Film Editing, Making a Good Film Better" published previously by Michael Weise Productions.
The man has great taste and here he has taken individual scenes from 35 classic films such as "Dial M for Murder, "Two Women" and "Chinatown," reproducing over 400 individual frames throughout the book with an in-depth analysis of the scene structure, both its sound and image editing. Dialogue is shown adjacent to the film image and analysis includes "Scene Value" and "Subtext."
Here is a great way to examine in detail editing choices as well as the strengths and potential artistic pitfalls avoided in some of the classic films of our time.
Pepperman Produces Yet Again.......2005-10-21
If I had access to Richard Pepperman's Setting Up your Scenes ten years ago, it could have quite possibly saved me $100,000 in film school fees, not to mention a lot of time and grief. This book is a must-have for all would-be filmmakers and screenwriters.
-- Far Dada, Independent Filmmaker, Toronto, Canada
It's all about choices, and Pepperman has chosen well.......2005-10-21
Pepperman dissects some very infamous scenes from some very famous movies -- providing us with the most breathtaking black & white stills -- in order to highlight the importance of the interplay between dialogue, subtext, and shot selection in great filmmaking. The beauty of the work is that while it will teach anyone who is willing to learn, it works equally well as a gorgeous coffee table tchotchke for the unwilling amongst us.

What an Art Director Does: An Introduction to Motion Picture Production Design

Customer Reviews:
A beautiful, informative, and long overdue book.......2001-07-21
A deep heartfelt thank you to Robert S. Sennett for his book "Setting the Scene". At long last we have a book that pays tribute to the great Art Directors of Hollywood. The movie stars and film directors get all the glory and credit these days, but those who do the heavy lifting are usually forgotten or not even mentioned. This book covers most of the great Art Directors of the Golden era of Hollywood, and also covers a number of the current generation.
I have long felt that William Cameron Menzies was the most influential Art Director in the history of Hollywood, and Sennett's book confirms this (in fact William Cameron Menzies is pictured on the cover). His work alone deserves an entire book devoted to it. But I'm so pleased we have this fine book for now.
If you ever wondered why movies, the great movies, look the way they do, why the sets and costumes and locations catch your eye and take you to places you've never been or only dreamed about, you'll understand who is responsible for all of this -- the Art Director (or Design Director). This is the book that will explain this with beautiful photographs and artwork sketches from these masterpiece films...enjoy! Bravo to Robert S. Sennett, your work is much appreciated.
Setting the scene is great.......2000-04-11
This book has it all from the silent era to today. All the great films and art directors are covered. Do yourself a favor and buy this book, you will not be disapointed.

For your next vacation, how about a magical mystery tour? In Crimes of the Scene, Nina King and Robin Winks have crafted the perfect guidebook for globe-trotting mystery aficionados. Visit Paris in the company of Jules Maigret, or explore Moscow with Arkady Renko; fictional detectives often operate in very real cities, and Jerusalem, Istanbul, Calcutta, and Belize are just a few of the settings in which mystery writers have conducted their literary mayhem over the years. King and Winks have included mysteries set in almost every part of the world, with the notable exceptions of the United States and England (both so well represented in the genre that they require guidebooks of their own). Each chapter begins with an essay describing some aspect of that region's mysteries, followed by an annotated reading list of books that have been chosen both for their literary quality and the evocativeness of their settings.
Wherever possible, the editors have tried to include native authors from each featured region, but not every foreign mystery writer's work has been translated into English. Still, the world is well represented, from Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo in Scandanavia to Gopal Baratham in Singapore, plus many places and authors in between. International explorers and armchair travelers alike will find plenty of great suggestions for their next foreign intrigue between the covers of Crimes of the Scene.

Best reference work covering mysteries worldwide.......1998-02-11
Armchair travelers and globetrotters alike will find "Crimes of the Scene" the ideal map to their overseas destinations. Washington Post book editor Nina King and her collaboraters have ransacked memories, libraries and references to compile this extensive list of mysteries set in foreign parts. Here, you can find the best book to read on a canel step in front of the Zanipolo in Venice (Donna Leon's "Death at La Fenice"); the best one about Fiji (Frank Arthur's "Who Killed Netta Maul?") and that Michael Dibdin's "Cabal" is ideal when seeking to roam around Rome, although avoid Ngaio Marsh's "When in Rome," whose "attempts at druggy hipness are merely embarassing." "Crimes of the Scene" is full of laurels and barbs like these, and these clear-eyed critical notes save the book from becoming a dry reference work suitable only for brief consultations.
CROOK'S TOUR A GREAT SUCCESS!.......1997-06-14
An imaginative, entertaining combination of two favorite kinds of reading--travel and crime. It's
packed with information that gives the flavor as well as some highlights of many mystery and spy stories. Could also be used as a guide when shopping in bookstores (including amazon.com). CRIMES OF THE SCENE is a great success! Charles Sullivan

Book Description
The art of decorating the body with tattoos dates back as early as the Ice Age. Although the use of tattoos among indigenous peoples is waning, the practice lives on, as more and more people around the world discover body art. Peoples from Central Asia and America, tribes and nomads from North Africa and the Middle East, and the Australian Aborigines and Maories have a long tradition of practicing this art. Each design in this pack is unique and carries its own special meaning, whether as religious symbol, talisman, charm, indicator of status or position, or simply an adornment. The Tribal Tattoo Pack includes instructions and materials to create spectacular tribal designs, including four paints in vibrant, earthy colors, transfer sheets, brush, and instructions. The meanings and myths behind the patterns are clearly explained in the history of this fascinating art.
