Customer Reviews:
Good For The Kids.......2002-06-01
This book was written for kids who enjoyed the remake of Planet of the Apes. Grown-ups will probably not enjoy it but it was not intended for grown-ups. The book is a nice effort for the kids. The mediocre script for the movie did not leave the author of the book with much to work with. It is nice to see that a new generation of Apes has begun and I welcome the effort of the author.
Not the Planet of the Apes.......2001-10-02
This has everything to do with the recent movie and nothing to do with the real book. The real book had messages that were really lost in the recent film, it was close to a modern day Gulliver's Travels, raising questions about how we treat animals, our science and our society.
This will no doubt be fairly close to the recent film, which is okay hokum. Excepting the massive holes in the plot of the recent movie... How did horses arrive on the planet? Where were the non-chimps on the station etc?
A beautifull Collector's piece........2001-08-23
This is a beautifull book about the 2001 version of Planet of the Apes directed by Tim Burton.
It is varied, with lots articles on many aspects of the film and richly illustrated througout with incredible film and "behind the camera" images. Additionally you will find the complete screenplay with related photos. All those elements combined make it an excpetional piece of film memorabilia.
Overall, this book does a great service to a movie that continues the great myth of "Planet of the Apes".
Missed it by that much.......2001-08-22
I liked this book overall, and it was interesting to see the changes and deletions between te script and the finished film. The big problem I had was the omission of the ending scene in the screenplay, it just seems like a cop out to protect a secret that was already out at the time of the book's release A WEEK AFTER THE MOVIE CAME OUT. I wanted this book in hardback but for somereason it never came available, and I ended up settling for the paperback version. I have a feeling the Cinefex magazine covering Planet of the Apes will be much more informative for a lot less money.
decent book, but ENDING IS MISSING.......2001-08-06
The copy of this book I have does NOT have the surprise ending that is in the film. I won't spoil the ending, but neither will this screenplay....

Customer Reviews:
christmas at its best.......2007-04-22
The words to this song is the story of the real Christmas. Such a talented man is Mark Lowry. I understand that it is the only song he ever wrote...with one like this one, who needs another one!
Mary Did you Know? (with audio CD).......2007-01-18
I bought this for myself and then went back and ordered more for Christmas gifts. Everyone who received it has commented on the story and the music. It is also a special treat for me to listen to every Christmas season. I just love it.
No Christmas is complete without this!.......2006-11-25
This CD and book is THE most beautiful and meaningful gift I've ever received. My husband heard the song on the radio and went searching for it at music store where he found the Mark Lowry book/CD. I couldn't stop crying the first time I heard it. To read the birth of Christ through the eyes of His mother, the most Holy Theotokos, brings a new perspective to this great and holy holiday. I encourage everyone reading this review to purchase one for yourself and one for someone you love.
4 Time Bereaved Mother Soothed.......2006-02-19
I fell in love with this song one Christmas Eve midnight mass years ago. I have since lost my newborn triplet daughters and my 9 year old daughter Emily. I then found this book at a resale shop and read it one night while having trouble with my grief. I cried. The book was very helpful and remembering that Mary is a bereaved parent helped me with my own pain.
The PERFECT Christmas gift!.......2005-09-30
This is an exquisite jewel of a gift, suitable for just about everyone on your list! The CD is performed by the composer of this most beautiful Christmas song and the book which houses it is beautifully done with illustrations and prose that will remind everyone of the true meaning of Christmas. Plus, the modest price makes it possible to buy one for all the special people on your list!
Book Description
These true, fascinating stories of the inspiration, heartache, trials, and faith that inspired some of the greatest Christmas carols, hymns, and popular songs will enrich the joy and celebration of the Christmas season.
Customer Reviews:
Great read - but too small.......2007-01-11
The book and information was wonderful. A very nice read. However - stick to the original size. This miniature edition is a little TOO miniature... only about 1 inch square.
Good for modern songs, bad for older ones........2006-11-05
The author should quote his sources, because others in the future may take his statements for fact, when some of the stories are not backed up by other authors / researchers. I have found conflicting information about some of the music both in print and online. A Google search will lead you to different versions and also different background info on "The Twelve Days of Christmas", for example. Also, though I am no musicologist, I would consider a christmas song as being secular, and a christmas carol as being about sacred topics, i.e. Jesus, Joseph, and Mary. In contrast, The "Reader's Digest Merry Christmas Songbook" is pretty good about (briefly) explaining the backgound / history of the selections (plus it has the music) and almost every one of the popular songs, but it does not always have all of the verses of the songs.
Sloppy research.......2006-03-02
For someone with 50 books to his credit--as per the dust jacket--Collins is highly sloppy in the research of this book. As has been previously noted, he just presented a common story about the origins of "Silent Night" without necessarily having done any deep research. And the comments about "The Twelve Days of Christmas" come straight from a silly internet piece, with no basis in fact.
This is common throughout this book. It seems more often than not, Collins has just done some cursory internet research and then slapped it all together and called it good.
Some other screw-ups: Irving Berlin was worried that "White Christmas" wasn't really a good song. Actually Berlin, upon introducing it to his office staff and musical secretary, refered to it as "not only the greatest song I've ever written, but the greatest song ever written." Berlin at one point had plans to make White Christmas the main production number in a major Broadway revue. In performing it for Crosby and studio execs, Berlin got nervous with himself and choked in performing it. You can read about this in Jody Rosen's excellent book on White Christmas, called "White Christmas."
As for his assertions about the meaning and origin of the term Merry in merry Christmas, he gets it wrong again. Ten minutes in the Oxford English Dictionary, available at any decent public library, would have given him the answers.
Better Books on this subject are Rosen's afforementioned book and "The Penguin Book of Christmas Carols" ed. Ian Bradbury.
Inspire Your Heart and Mind .......2005-12-17
Did you ever wonder how your favorite Christmas hymns and carols came to be written? Where were they first sung and why? Who are the people behind them? What events in their lives, what discoveries of faith, inspired these beloved songs into being? Ace Collins has complied a lovely little book to help you find out.
For instance, here you will find everything from "Angels from the Realms of Glory" to "White Christmas". (Yes, there are some popular songs sprinkled in among the hymns and carols!). Do you know...
...What favorite hymn was written the Christmas that the church organ conked out? (Yes, I know some of you know the tale, but it is here for those who don't).
...Which one was a faithful Christian's response to the carnage of the War Between the States?
...Which hymn was penned with a visit on horseback to the village of Jesus' birthplace fresh in the writer's memory?
Ace Collins relates the stories, both familiar and fresh. He helps the reader not only wonder as they wander through the holidays but also figure out who Good King Wenceslas was and why he is worth singing about after all these years. Collins is the author of over fifty books including "Turn Your Radio On" and "The Cathedrals". All of these stories are accompanied by the words of the carols and hymns, so you can sing or hum along as you read about them.
This book would be a great devotional book or family conversation starter to use throughout the Advent season, with 31 different stories to inspire your heart and mind throughout the wondrous season. It is small enough to serve as a great stocking stuffer and lovely enough to be a stand-alone gift for any number of people on your Christmas list.
Big disappointment.......2005-01-20
I was expecting accurate information regarding the history of Christmas songs and carols. Instead, Ace Collins has taken some facts about the carols and woven fairytales around them. In some cases he has taken a few facts and assumed results that are erroneous.
Having personally researched "Silent Night" in Austria, I can say for certain that Collins has presented another fanciful story based on some facts and some misconceptions about the world's best-loved carol.
The tale about "The Twelve Days of Christmas" being a secret catechism for Catholics in the period when they were oppressed in England doesn't make any sense. The "secret" Catholic beliefs it supposedly hides are identical to the Protestant beliefs of that era. Therefore there was no reason to keep them secret from Protestants -- 1 = one God, 2 = Old and New Testament, 3 = gold, frankincense, and myrrh -- and so on.
Sadly, it's just another feel-good Christmas book when it could have been a valuable resource for people wanting accurate information.

Customer Reviews:
What an experience!.......2003-06-10
First of all, the song is one of the most beautiful songs ever written! I am not exaggerating. The first time I heard it, I cried. Growing up Catholic, this song meant so much but it doesn't matter what denomination you are affiliated with. We all understand the fear and struggle when asked to follow God's plan but we know that he will bring us through. That is what this song is about. It is one of the most beautiful Christmas songs ever written!
The story that Amy Grant writes to accompany the song is heart-wrenching. It's a modern-day version of the song. This song will bring comfort to anyone going through trials. This is an especially great gift fot expecting mothers.
I highly recommend this CD/book to all customers. It also makes a very nice and unique gift. It's for both the music lover and book lover.
Breath of Heaven.......2002-01-19
I was introduced to the song my senior year of high school when my choir sang it for the yearly High School Christmas concert. The teacher spent a class prior to the concert explaining the meaning of the song. I, and many others, were humbled when we discovered the power of the message that we were conveying. On the night of the concert it took all my skill as a singer not to cry as I sang the song. Just this last christmas I recieved the book and CD from my grandma. Even though I recieved several great gifts, it was this book and CD that touched me the deepest. The book gave the song a greater depth and meaning, and hearing the song again was a magnificent experience. I would recommend this book to everyone, but especially to women. It offers a message of strength and hope in uncertain times.
Beautiful book.......2001-12-21
I received this book in the mail and was excited about it because I had not really wanted to spend the money on it, but did want to read it. I have to say I was nearly brought to tears and certainly humbled by the experience of reading Amy's words and listening to her beautiful song in which she pays such a loving and reverent tribute to Mary. I remember Amy saying once at a concert just before she sang the song "Mary was not better than anyone else...she was just willing." I STRONGLY urge you to read this book and then sit and listen to the song while looking at the incredible illustrations.
A Beautiful Book with a timeless message!!.......2001-12-21
I got this book at the annual Amy Grant Christmas concert but was very happy when I saw it on Amazon the next day so I could buy it for presents for family and friends. The book tells the story of how Amy came up with the lyrics to one of the most powerful Christmas songs ever written "Breath of Heaven." The song is about Mary and the way she must have felt with all the responsibilty of carrying the savior.
The book itself is very colerful with pictures and verses throughout it. And the best part of the book in My opinion is the Story written about Amy on the reasons behind the lyrics to the song! As an added bonus the Book comes with the Single to the Song the book is about as perfprmed by Amy! A must for any Amy Grant fan or Christmas lovers!

Just for fun! The traditional song "The 12 Days of Christmas" is adapted featuring popular dogs to carry out the theme along with a surprise ending. Original photography of canines with fun and festive hand-painted art make this one of the season's most original and fun books.
Customer Reviews:
Twelve dogs, One terrified cat.......2006-11-12
I bought this book from a sale rack. I thought it would be a really cute gift for my 5 year old granddaughter. Then I got to the last page.
As per the original carol, more and more dogs are added. Then on the twelfth day my true love gave: A CAT!
The poor cat is sitting on a perch terrified of all the dogs.
I did not think it was at all amusing, especially for children.
No wonder it was on the sale rack.
The Perfect Dust Collector.......2006-07-12
This book is utter junk. It's the perfect dust collector for a coffee table, and that's the best that can be said about it. How it sold 400,000+ copies, I'll never know.
Everybody's 7-year-old should be urged to pick up a pen, pick out a favorite poem, and change the words. Then kids wouldn't have the problem of paying for college anymore, where they might be able to actually learn about literature that really matters.
My 4 year old memorized it.......2006-02-24
Be prepared: you will be hearing this song over and over and over...
A book we read year round in our home!.......2005-06-03
My daughter has absolutely LOVES this book! So much so, she wouldn't let me put it way in our Christmas box. So far we've been singing/reading this to her since last Christmas. Time & time again she'll go find this book and ask me "read please"! We love the photos of all the dogs and especially the surprise ending!!!! Absolutely delightful book! This young author had a terrific idea in creating this book! It has brought much joy & song into our home! And it's such a cute book that I don't mind reading it all though the year!!!
It's Now A Movie.......2005-04-11
First let me inform you that I am the father of the author so I am understandably proud of my daughter and thrilled at the success of the book. It has sold nearly 400,000 copies in the several years it has been out. Wal*Mart carries a line of plush dog toys and sold 196,000 this past (2004) Christmas. Now it's even been made into a movie that will be available on DVD for the holiday season of 2005. Emma wrote the book at 7 and is now 15 and a champion basketball player, equestrian rider and sings with one of America's top children's choirs. By the way there is a karoke version of the song on the CD following the one sung by 25 kids (Emma sings the lead) but it's not mentioned anywhere on the book. Also, the full size hardback copy of the book is great for all but toddlers but is not generally available in stores. Get it on Amazon.com. Finally, we just launched a "12 Dogs" website at www.12DogsOfChristmas.com where you can see pieces of the movie and lots of other information.
Book Description
Nothing brings Christmas to life more than the sight and sound of a crackling fire in the hearth. But what if there’s no fireplace? What’s a person to do? Simply slip the disk from this joyful Noel package into the DVD slot and watch the warm seasonal glow on the screen! The Holiday Yule Log book brings magic into every home, apartment, or even dorm room. But the faux fire isn’t all, because the kit also contains a soundtrack of festive carols and four sing-along lyric booklets to hand out, so that everyone can join in. The book itself includes an array of classic Christmas tales (such as “The Gift of the Magi”), as well as the history of the Yule Log and Christmas recipes.

Cute gift .......2007-01-10
DVD of fire in a fireplace. This is a neat/silly gift for anyone who doesn't have a fireplace. I gave this to newlyweds along with a pair of Christmas stockings to hang on their TV (virtual fireplace). Audio is Christmas carols, but can turn volume down for other occasions. Also good gift for party host.
