Pretentious Hipster Nonsense .......2005-12-29
This is purported to be a children's book? It reads like someone who desperately wants to make sure everyone knows how hip they are to the ways of Hollywood and celebrity. The story is beyond the grasp of children and yet way too juvenile for adults. Even the design and illustration are a perfect example of how to make a mess with too many changing fonts and too many precious doodles.
I noticed that Ms. Kalman recently did the illustrations for the new Elements of Style and with some restraint, her talent is much better displayed in those pages.
90210, BABY !.......2002-02-09
It is easy to see why Maira Kalman's MAX IN HOLLYWOOD, BABY received a citation as "one of the ten best illustrated books of 1991." Those illustrations contain as many wonderful surprises and secrets, double meanings and jokes as the words they sit with. Even the end papers are filled with delightful drawings of dozens of Hollywood superstars from Charlie Chaplin and Fanny Brice to Judy Garland and Jean-Paul Belmondo.
The text is, I guess, written to entertain children but it is just as charming and entertaining to this adult with its story of the "real" Hollywood: Dozens of wacky Show-Biz types appear including the psychic to the stars, Madame Gilzelka; the producer, Bella Broccoli, who insists on drinking a concoction which produces "the secret of youth;" and his "tantalizing" starlet Monica Zitti; The hero is, of course, Max,the dog/movie-lover who becomes Mr. Stravinsky, hot-shot director pining to be a celebrity. ("I won't have conversations, I'll just have monologues.") Can our Max handle the pressure? the pretense? Well, you'll have to read the book to find out. Along the way you'll also discover why Ferrrnando Extra Debonnaire who studied at the Royal Academy of Driving Directors tells Max, "Watch your step in this town. There are some back-stabbing, power-hungry, status-seeking vegetarians here." HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, especially for those readers determined to have a career in the movies, no matter how high the cost.
The Worst Max Book.......2002-01-15
This is the worst Max book. Max Makes a Million is brilliant. Oh-La-La Max in Love is very strong. But this is just muddled, not easily grasped, and not very interesting. My kids never want to hear this book and I never want to read it.
Max Hollywood is only the begining.......2000-08-20
Max in hollywood, baby is a great story, the author,Maira Kalman, has a real feel for charactors and is so in touch with Max that she is becoming that charactor, at least to me.If you read this book you will love it so much you will want to read all the Max books. I can speak as one who has read it and I fell in love with this charactor at once, maybe you think I am just babeling but I speak the truth.
Book Description
Jinky's "mom" and "dad" might be complainers, but Jinky is just happy to be alive. He enjoys every minute and he can't understand why his lucky, pampered Hollywood parents and their show business friends are such miserable whiners. After all, Jinky's life started badly:
"My life began in a cage in San Pedro, California. Some creepy guy bought me for his stupid wife and she didn't want me. . . . One night, the guy took me to the pound. They threw me into a cold, wet crate and slammed the gate. . . . I was scheduled to be 'put down' or, as I like to say, murdered. But I got lucky."
Now Jinky lives in a beautiful house in the Hollywood Hills. He has a pool and a Jacuzzi and sports cars and a fat blond terrier girlfriend named Finley who loves to lick his ears.
Jinky went from an unloved and abandoned pet to sleeping in bed with his mom (a former Pet herself, in Penthouse¿she looks good) and eating delicious food off his dad's plate (his mom cooks good, too).
Jinky knows what's important in life, and he wishes his mom and dad could stop worrying about their status in Hollywood and enjoy life as much as he does. He can't understand why show business people are always so unhappy, especially the funny ones. Every "pitch" meeting Jinky overhears, every Hollywood dinner he eavesdrops on, every Hollywood barbecue, lunch, and casual encounter in coffee shops is another chance for these people to bitch and moan about "the business."
But Jinky's "tail" is not just about his hilariously self-obsessed parents and their friends. And his message is not just that happiness is not about how much we have, but how we love. His is a tale about how hope, perseverance, and even one small act of kindness can change a life.

Jinky Tells All
Have you ever wondered what your dog was thinking? Well this dog tells all in a really funny tail (oops) about a terrier who goes from down on his luck to the good life. Wherever there's a scrap on the floor of Hollywood, Jinky is there. He's been everywhere from Cannes to Cancun, but he is still the every-dog, taking on the elite and effete in a dog eat dog business! If you like Hollywood, see it from a dog's eye point of view. And if you don't like Hollywood, you'll know why after you read Jinky. I loved it!
An Honest and Compassionate Book.......2007-09-10
This is one of the best books that that I have ever read. The humor and honesty is unparalleled. I truly believe that every adult should read this book and especially the last 4 or so pages where the author discusses important issues such as adopting versus shopping. She is so right, that people should take a trip to their local shelter and LEARN that until we spay and neuter we will ALWAYS face the sadness of all the wonderful animals that await their forever home. Mrs. Davis is a wonderful person and a true hero of mine. God Bless her and her wonderful animal companion Jinky. May we all learn from him and one by one change the world!
I LOVE JINKY!.......2007-07-31
From death-row in San Pedro to the A-List in the Hollywood Hills ~ I Love Jinky!
This book is hilarious! I think Hollywood can only benefit from a dog's diary. Jinky teaches us all that humans are a nutty breed and that we spend way too much time complaining about things that don't really matter. So much so, that we can barely appreciate the finer things in life. Like the the perfect "Tootsie Roll" poop. Life is full of Stupid Kitties, so what? To know Jinky is to have the answer to the eternal question, "Is the dog bowl half-full, or half-empty?" Especially in Hollywood, there's nothing like a little laughter and gas between friends!
Thank you Carole Raphaelle Davis for writing such a fun and entertaining book ~ and thank you so much for your continuing work in support of animal rescue!!!
Hysterical and Heartwarming.......2007-07-23
Only in LA could a ragamuffin like Jinky go from the streets of San Pedro to the highlife of the Hollywood madness. I read this book in one sitting on a very long flight from the East Coast to Los Angeles and laughed the entire time (albeit with a few tears here and there). Jinky reminds us of what's important in life through this touching and very funny story about his life. He, along with the help of his Mom shine a light on a very real problem in the shelter system and the public's mindset towards companion animals. Jinky is one of the lucky ones to make it out of the shelter alive and into a loving home and he uses his "celebrity" to help other animals.
Kudos Jinky!
Great Book.......2007-06-28
I received your book as a Birthday present. I loved reading the book. It was so funny and touching at the same time. The fact that you included so many pictures in your book was just an added plus. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs and wants to be entertained.

What Is Important?.......2001-11-20
Our younger daughter adored Clifford, and your children will, too! Part of the appeal of these books is that adults like them, too. You will find them a good launching pad for sharing your own perspectives about life with your child. Because Norman They are modern fables without the scary parts. Since Mr. Bridwell both draws and writes the books, you will find that the humor and story-telling are very well integrated. You could almost "read" this book without the words, which makes it attractive for youngsters who are still learning to read. The words are simple, and the book can quickly be memorized in order to have a "reading" experience before all the words can be decoded. Then real reading quickly follows.
Clifford Goes to Hollywood is a real joy for young people. By the time they are ready for this book, television, movies, and celebrities are part of their lives. What child hasn't dreamed about becoming a big star? The story explores that subject, but with a twist. Clifford is discovered, not Emily Elizabeth, and the story describes his experiences in the silver screen capital.
If your child is not familiar with Clifford, the Big Red Dog, the book does not require any background from the other Clifford books.
This book opens with a sequence where Emily Elizabeth and Clifford are shown having fun together. Then, a man passes by and notices Clifford. The man wants to know if Clifford would like to be in the movies. Of course! But first, there's a screen test, and you will enjoy a series of very funny drawings of Clifford acting up a storm.
Clifford gets the part, and the movie is a runaway success with Clifford as the star. Soon, he is surrounded by the accouterments of celebrity, in dog fashion. These include an elaborate dog house, fancy dishes and food, many servants to wait on him, beautiful and valuable dog collars, a bone-shaped pool (this will be sure to elicit giggles), his footprint in the cement in Hollywood, TV talk show appearances (where Emily Elizabeth can watch him) and fans everywhere.
Clifford also experiences the downside of being a celebrity. Fans won't give him any privacy (they are even in his food dish!). Some even snip out his hair, leaving him looking very mangy indeed. But worst of all, he has no little girl to play with.
When Clifford sees a girl and her dog playing outside of his walls, he's sad.
That night, he escapes over the wall . . . and comes home to Emily Elizabeth, where he can really be happy!
Your child can have lots of fun with this book . . . thinking about playing with Clifford, imagining what it would be like to have a dog who is a movie star, imagining life as a movie star her- or himself, and comparing fame to the good life at home.
Norman Bridwell has done a fine job in this story of providing many lessons, without putting a negative cast to the book. Clifford just gets to pick the better of both worlds. I was also glad that Emily Elizabeth was not sad when Clifford went away. Her cheering for Clifford sets a good example for being happy for the success of friends, as well.
How do you choose in your life between greater success and more closeness to those you love and care about? Are you happy with the balance you have selected?
Put first things first!
Clifford Goes Hollywood.......2001-02-20
There are three things I like about the book "Clifford Goes Hollywood". The three things I like about the book is that it has many perspectives, the story helps you to think like a kid again, and the story is great for kids learning how to read. The first reason I like the story "Clifford goes Hollywood" is because it has many perspectives. You can look at the story many different ways, you can look at the story like a kid and say it's about a dog who would rather be at home instead of being a hollywood star. Another way you can look at it is that a Hollywood Star is not always great, you don't get to see your family as much, and you can't go any were without being mobbed. The second reason Ilike the book "Clifford Goes Hollywood" is because it helps you to think like a kid again. When you are older you stop thinking about the small things in life, for example you don't have that childhood faith, which means you don't worry about the leaves falling of the trees or when a flower dies. The third reason I like the book "Clifford Goes Hollywood" is because it's great for kids just learning how to read. The book is easy for little kids to read and understand. The author uses small words so that the younger kids can sound them out' for example one of the sentences uses "then he asked him to act angry. In conclusion this was a great book because it has many perspectives, it helps you to think like a kid again, and it is a great book for little kids that are learning how to read.

Hereýs the Scoop!.......2001-04-27
If you like Hollywood and you like dogs, this is the book for you! J.C. Suares has compiled a wonderful little photo book (78 pages) of mostly "old" Hollywood actors in various poses with canine friends and thespians. The earliest photo is a 1920's shot of the Little Rascals with pit bull mix, "Pete the Pup" (Suares informs us that the circle around the eye was drawn), and the most recent is James Belushi in 1989's "K-9."
While a few shots are candids (e.g., a fabulous picture of Gable petting an Irish Setter on the set in 1931; Bogart with his Scottish Terriers), most are publicity stills or shots from movies. These include Shirley Temple (and mutt) in "The Stowaway," William Powell, Myrna Loy and-of course-ASTA in "After the Thin Man." Katherine Hepburn with English Springer Spaniels in "A Bill of Divorcement," and, perhaps most famously, Judy Garland with Toto (a Cairn Terrier).
The pictures are in glorious black and white. Even without the dogs, this is an enjoyable book: There are almost iconic-looking photos of Ava Gardner, Jean Harlow, Elvis Presley (with a hound dog), Roddy McDowall, and Elizabeth Taylor, to name a few. Photos are captioned and there is a 4-page introduction by the author. Worth looking for!
Book Description
He's the baddest dog in town. A 100% high-steppin', bone-crunchin', cat-chasin' pooch with one small problemo: he has three days to live. Three days left on Death Row at the City Pound for Unwanted Canines. Unless...Unless a big Hollywood agent drops by looking for The Next Big Doggy Thing to appear in a big new action movie. Bad Dog's gotta show the agent that he's the mutt with the mostest. Tinseltown will never be the same again!

Book Description
There's never been a Hollywood memoir quite like this one—or a movie star like Dick, Dog of Oaxaca!
A tale of a Mexican mutt whose "discovery" by a director under a restaurant table in Oaxaca launches his fleeting but legendary career. Though he encounters crazed producers, clueless directors and slimy agents, Dick never goes Hollywood.
“Through it all, behind his signature sunglasses, Dick watches, learns and loves as only a dog can. The result is a hilarious, touching, thoroughly unique novel."—Jonathan Cutler, Openers

"Adios, Hollywood, My Story By Dick, Dog of Oaxaca As Told To Rose Leiman Goldemberg".
It was one of the funniest and enjoyable reads I have had in a long time. Aside from the shear enjoyment of reading the story it stayed with as I got to understand what kind of place Hollywood can be. I think the use of a dog to tell the story of what happens to some if not most who want to be in the Hollywood scene was brilliant.
I thank you for writing it and providing me with such meaningful fun, but hat happens to Dick next?
ANOTHER OPINION.......2000-01-05
I'M THE AUTHOR...AND UNFORTUNATELY AMAZON.COM PRINTED OUT OUR ONLY BAD REVIEW.
ANOTHER OPINION: "THERE'S NEVER BEEN A HOLLYWOOD MEMOIR QUITE LIKE THIS ONE--BUT THEN, THERE'S NEVER BEEN A MOVIE STAR QUITE LIKE DICK, DOG OF OAXACA. ONCE A HUMBLE MEXICAN DOG, HE WAS DISCOVERED UNDER A RESTAURANT TABLE AND HIS LEGENDARY CAREER WAS LAUNCHED.
"NOW DICK LOOKS BACK ON THE HEADY DAYS OF STARDOM, FROM HIS FIRST PART IN "ESCAPE TO INFINITY" TO HIS FINAL ROLE, IN THE INFAMOUS, NEVER-COMPLETED "DOG OF GOD." WHILE DICK STRUGGLES TO PERFECT HIS CRAFT AND PROTECT HIS BELOVED MISTRESS, STARLET WANDA SACKS, HE DIRECTORS, SPINELESS WRITERS AND SLIMY AGENTS, NOT TO MENTION THE GORGEOUS DUMB ACTOR WHOSE LINES ARE PAINTED ON A MOUNTAIN SO HE CAN READ THEM WITH A FARAWAY LOOK IN HIS EYES.
"THROUGH IT ALL, BEHIND HIS SIGNATURE SUNGLASSES, DICK WATCHES, LEARNS, AND LOVES AS ONLY A DOG CAN. THE RESULT IS A HILARIOUS, TOUCHING, THOROUGHLY UNIQUE NOVEL."
I LIKE THIS APPRAISAL BETTER!
ADIOS, HOLLYWOOD IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING REPRINTED, AND IS THE SUBJECT OF A NEW MUSICAL COMEDY.

Big Dog in a Big Town........2003-05-15
Clifford is more than just a big red dog. As it turns out, he's also a great actor. So a famous director casts Clifford in a movie and a short time later, he's a star. It's off to Hollywood; swimming pools, movie stars, and fancy food. But Clifford has to leave Emily Elizabeth behind. Is fame worth the cost of family? Great book with a subtle message about the importance of family and the simpler things in life.
Book Description
Yes, Virginia, there is a war on Christmas. It's the secularization of America's favorite holiday and the ever-stronger push toward a neutered holiday season so that non-Christians won't be even the slightest bit offended.
Traditionalists get upset when they're toldmore and more these daysthat celebrating Christmas in any public way is a violation of church and state separation. That is certainly not what the founders intended when they wrote, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.
John Gibson, a popular anchor for the Fox News Channel, has been digging up evidence about the liberal activists, lawyers, politicians, educators, and media people who are leading the war on Christmas. And he reveals that the situation is worse than you can imagine. For instance:
In Illinois, state government workers were forbidden from saying the words Merry Christmas while at work
In Rhode Island, local officials banned Christians from participating in a public project to decorate the lawn of City Hall
A New Jersey school banned even instrumental versions of traditional Christmas carols
Arizona school officials ruled it unconstitutional for a student to make any reference to the religious history of Christmas in a class project
Millions of Americans are starting to fight back against the secularist forces and against local officials who would rather surrender than be seen as politically incorrect. Gibson shows readers how they can help save Christmas from being twisted beyond recognition, with even the slightest reference to Jesus completely disappearing.
The annual debate will be hotter than ever in 2005, and this book will be perfect for everyone who's pro-Christmas.
Customer Reviews:
should be required reading.......2007-08-29
The War on Christmas is real and the major media refuses to report on it. I am tired of being "Happy Holidayed" to death in a country where at least 90% of people are Christians and virtually everyone celebrates at least the secular side of Christmas. The tool of "political correctness" is nothing more than a gimmick to silence the majority. Why should we have to celebrate our most beloved holiday behind closed doors and be afraid to call it and its trappings by name???? A democracy means rule of the majority! Do a google search for "The Jewish Grinch Who Stole Christmas" and read a very interesting article by a Jewish man which is written without anger, hatred or bitterness. May I suggest that Americans who are angered by the War on Christmas boycott all stores , web sites , and products which refuse to mention the holiday by name. They obviously don't want our business. Could anybody tell me what is offensive about "Peace on Earth and Good Will to Men"?
Good grief, Charlie Brown!.......2007-07-04
Christmas is the Western world's juggernaut of a holiday. Many, if not most, retail businesses are highly dependent on Christmas season purchases in order to show annual profits. Not only is Christmas huge commercially, it is the religious holiday that is observed by more people than any other, worldwide. For John Gibson to claim that a handful of isolated local ill-conceived rulings are somehow placing this holiday in jeopardy is just too stupid for words.
It's obvious that some people are going through their lives just itching for something to be angry about or someone to be the focus of their anger. Relax, everyone. Christmas will continue to arrive on schedule and Santa will still be checking his list to see who's been using their heads for something besides a hatrack.
Be good, boys and girls! Enjoy Christmas. Don't use it as another excuse to seethe. The merchants of hatred like John Gibson are just making money from your anger and, in the process, turning Americans against one another. For them to use the holiday season as a vehicle for their agenda is despicable. They should be ashamed.
The War on Christmas.......2007-06-22
If you don't believe what the book covers it shows you are standing in the shadows.
Slapstick.......2007-03-08
I call this screed that as I almost gave it a star or two for its comic value. But, no, I can't do that.
All right, I got this on the remainder shelf at the University of Maryland bookstore--sorry Amazon. Frankly, I didn't know the book existed until I saw it there. Anyone with a few brain cells knows that the "war on Christmas" is a completely contrived fantasy. Those who believe in it have chosen items that have been facts for years--that some are sending "holiday" cards instead of Christmas cards, for example.
Boys and girls, we're a multi-religious/cultural society. When I was still a graduate theology student in a Catholic institution, I sent a "Happy Hannuakah" card to Jewish friends. I still send "Blessed Ramadan" cards to Muslim neighbors! And, to the likes of John Gibson, bill o'lielly, and assorted other alleged rightwing harlots, that means I'm opposing Christianity.
You know, I never liked Gibson. But I thought he had a microgram of integrity. Now I realize how bad the US media have become because we allow a second rate hooker like him--the others I mentioned and others still--remain those who allegedly inform us, or are in a position to do so.
Why do I call them "alleged conservatives"? Because I don't believe that they--or even Ann Coultergeist and her ilk--believe in anything. They're completely cynical yet know their audience off of which they make a bundle. We all know their audiences, the ones Nixon used to call "the silent majority." They're people desperately in need of someone to tell 'em what to think. To boot, they need to consider themselves as victimized. It's sad, really, and real life goes on in spite of them and John Gibson.
How the Grinch Stole Oppression.......2007-01-09
This inflammatory and hyperbolic book is tailor-made for Far Right self-victimizers who need to justify their increasingly bizarre ideology of confrontation. Here John Gibson has forever ruined his standing as a journalist. Real investigative journalists tackle complicated stories, rather than spoon-feed invective and conjecture to the narrow-minded, or concoct vast conspiracy theories out of a few specific examples. The current ideological elite has enjoyed a decade of uncontested social, economic, and political power, and Gibson's claims here are perfect illustrations of how the Far Right can't even comprehend its own self-righteousness. While millions of their fellow Americans continue to face inequality and discrimination, the poor souls of the elite can't rest on their fortunate laurels, and want us to believe they're the ones who are really oppressed. That's because they saw a sign saying "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas." This is the same political philosophy that uses the label "freedom" for overseas military operations that lead to the deaths of thousand of American soldiers and tens of thousands of civilians, then turn around and use "war" for the actions of a few levelheaded non-zealots who wish to preserve our Constitutional separation of church and state.
Gibson's "analysis" is nothing but a list of incidents in just seven different cities in which valiant Christian lawyers fought against the forces of evil that disputed a few Christmas observations. Of course, Gibson doesn't allow such a meager pattern to hold back a hyperbolic liberal conspiracy theory of the type his fellow self-victimizers will adore. You guessed it - a few activist "liberals" in a few towns constitute a vast conspiracy to introduce a paltry amount of discomfort into the privileged lives of tens of millions of comfortable elitists. Gibson's other running implication, about how the separation of church and state should apply to everyone else's religion except for the particular faith practiced by the current power regime, is so un-American and un-Democratic that even Conservatives should be aghast. If you're outside of the narrow Far Right political philosophy, this book is actually a useful illustration of how political and economic power leads to an illusory persecution complex. Not unlike many dictatorial regimes in history. If you're in that elite, or pretend you are even though that regime cares little for you, and you love to attract pity because you think you're forever victimized by non-existent conspiracies, then Happy Holidays!
