Organized by the American Federation of the Arts, Lorna Simpson is a 20-year gallery and retrospective of contemporary artist Lorna Simpson's photographic and text works. Unafraid to delve into themes of race, sexuality, and loss, Simpson's striking imagery of the human figure, often cropped, speaks directly to the viewer. Black-and- white and color photographs give the reader the next best thing to a tour of a gallery of Simpson's art, and the brief text passages include commentary on Simpson's creations and a conversation with the artist. Lorna Simpson is an excellent contribution to personal, academic, and community library photographic and artbook collections.

This book documents the two most recent works by the critically acclaimed British artist and filmmaker, Isaac Julien, both of which continue his investigation of issues of race and global politics. True North, shot in the spectacular landscapes of Iceland and Northern Sweden, is conceived around the expedition writings of the African-American explorer Matthew Henson, one of the key members of Robert E. Peary's 1909 Arctic expedition, and arguably the first person to reach the North Pole. True North's diametric counterpart, Fantome Afrique, weaves cinematic and architectural references through the rich imagery of urban Ouagadougou, Africa's cinematic center, and the arid spaces of rural Burkina Faso. The film is punctuated by archival footage from early colonial expeditions and landmark moments in African history.

Increased and accelerated processes of cultural syncretism have produced new configurations of identity for which theories of hybridity, matissage, and cosmopolitanism have been deployed and reworked in order to capture the polycentric and polysemic aspects of a new political philosophy of the Other. Under pressure from localized resistances, these terms no longer provide adequate frameworks for articulating the critical issues of difference and the asymmetry of evolving contemporary cultures. Beginning as a full-fledged literary movement in the late 1980s in the French Caribbean, Craolita ventured into the "chaos" produced by history to reclaim nationalist Creole identities. As a hypothesis of cultural production, the subsequent process of creolization reaches far beyond the plantation cultures of the Caribbean, towards a conceptualization of a non-totalitarian consciousness of preserved diversity that has its contested terrain within language, identity, politics, religion, and culture. Transcending still entrenched postcolonial and imperialist narratives of domination and resistance, center and periphery, creolization as a theory of creative disorder analyses active urban contest and contact zones in flux. It expresses a need for particularization that, by embedding Creole dynamics into sociopolitical and sociolinguistic histories, reformulates territories of art, architecture, dance, film, music, poetry, cuisine, oral literature, magic, and carnival.

Great edition.......2007-09-30
This edition of the Sixth Symphony is a great one in terms of quality, readability and presentation. The Sixth Symphony is probably one of Tchaikovsky's most famous works. The first movement is such a beautiful and emotional piece of music. The other movements are wonderful too, but I have a weakness for the first one. It is always interesting to read the score - while listening to the music for example - for there are so many details one could simply miss.

Professor Jackson explores sensitively and without prejudice the question of the Pathétique's program and its relation to Tchaikovsky's homosexuality and death. The book covers the work's conception, genesis, and reception, and presents an in-depth analysis of its remarkable formal structure. The reception chapter investigates the Pathétique's impact on Tchaikovsky's younger contemporaries as well as its political interpretation in the twentieth century, especially its transformation into a cultural icon of the Third Reich.

Not really a review - more a warning.......2007-07-23
Let me start with a disclaimer. I haven't read this book and don't want anyone to be misled or misguided into thinking that this note is anything other than what it is - a "proceed with caution" sign.
I ran into this book while trying to track down alternate versions of Mengelberg's recording of Richard Strauss's Ein Heldenleben. The Amazon search engine took me to excerpts from this book and, since they looked interesting, I looked into the pages cited. What I found was a swamp of the worst attacks against Mengelberg, Furtwangler, and Karajan as Nazi functionaries. The complexities of the relationships of those indisputably great artists with the totalitarian regime they had to live with is ironed into the flatness of a propaganda poster and we learn, for example, that Karajan joined the Nazi party twice with the implication that this was because he was such an enthusiast for the party's agenda (not because, as a foreigner in Germany, penniless at the beginning of his professional career, he would not be allowed to work without party membership and because the documentation of his membership was lost when he got a new job - what would joining twice have meant, that he was really, really a committed Nazi and therefore entitled to great patronage in his search for work? If that were the case, he [and every other ambitious artist in Germany at the time] would have joined the party twice or more a year on the theory that many memberships would yield many membership points, somewhat like what the airlines would later do with frequent fliers.), that Furtwangler would do whatever the Nazis wanted (which was far from the complete truth) and that Mengelberg made himself into a poster child for the Dutch collaborationist regime (which, again is far from what was really going on).
Good history - you could start with RIchard Osborne's excellent (and clear-eyed) biography of Karajan - shows the complexity of these issues and of the people who had to deal with them - and that the kind of moral cheap grace displayed by Mr. Jackson here is of more value as self-congratulation than as a useful look into how real people responded to real world questions.
In fairness, this is a book about a Tchaikovsky symphony, not about the moral issues of performers under repressive regimes, but I have serious doubts about the capacity for analysis or clear thought of an author who could go off the rails so easily on this issue.
To end where I began (sort of), I don't know much of what this gentleman wrote about the music itself. It might, for all I know, be of a completely different order than is his analysis of the actions of the musicians that I briefly discussed above. But that analysis is so shallow and lacking in insight that it makes me wonder about the likely quality of the rest of the book.
