Book Description

Ingrid Bergman was one of the biggest and most glamorous stars in Hollywood -- until she became one of the most controversial, when an international scandal threatened to end her career. She had starred in several now-classic films: Casablanca, Spellbound, Notorious, Gaslight, and her co-stars included such Hollywood icons as Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, and Gregory Peck. In this insightful new biography, Charlotte Chandler draws on her extensive conversations with Bergman herself to describe what happened from Bergman's point of view, revealing a complex and fascinating woman who lived life intensely.

Already a movie star in her native Sweden, Ingrid Bergman became an instant sensation for David O. Selznick in Hollywood and the number-one box-office star in the world. But the most dramatic event in her life took place off the screen when she made a film in Italy and began a passionate romance with her director, Roberto Rossellini. The scandal that followed left her exiled from America, ostracized by Hollywood, vilified in the press, denounced by clergy, censured in the U.S. Senate -- and separated from her young daughter. She was able to make films only with Rossellini.

In the words of those who were involved, Chandler describes Bergman's life before, during, and after the scandal. Among those Chandler spoke with were Alfred Hitchcock, George Cukor, Sidney Lumet, Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, Greta Garbo, and Liv Ullmann. She spoke with Roberto Rossellini; their twin daughters, Isabella and Isotta Ingrid; Rossellini's son, Renzo; Ingrid's daughter Pia Lindstrom; and others who knew Ingrid well. This extraordinary access makes Ingrid: Ingrid Bergman, a Personal Biography the most perceptive and revealing book ever written about the charismatic Hollywood legend.

5 out of 5 stars Ingrid...A true view!.......2007-08-31

Having had a close, sweet friendship with Ingrid the last 12 years of her life, I can easily say that Ms Chandler's remembrances of Ingrid, marked by numerous interviews of family, friends & collegues rings very true!
Being privy to many personal aspects of Ingrid's life, visits to Choisel, dinners in Paris & London, etc., I was swept with nostalgia & memories of dear Ingrid as I read this marvelous story picturing Ingrid as she really was in her life.
Following a less than nice review of a play in London, Ingrid was appearing in, she wrote to me about that notice & said: "Let the dogs bark
the caravan moves on!" Typical Bergman.
Unpretentious, caring, sweet, natural, I loved Ingrid dearly, as a friend!
This book says it all!

This book was purchased as a gift, and the recipient was very well pleased.
It has great interest to people, women particularly, who were living during the period of Ingrid Bergman's stardom and scandal.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-04-28

This book tells a very human story about the life of Ingrid Bergman from the time of her parents before she was born, to her early life after her mothers death, to being an actress in Sweeden Hollywood and Italy to being a wife three times and mother of four including Isabella Rossalini.

Great Book, Very interesting life!

5 out of 5 stars Ingrid Bergman, a Personal Biography.......2007-04-07

This was a well-written story about Ingrid Bergman...I had seen her in several movies but did not know about her background. Just things I had read and heard about her. The author really captured her fascinating life in detail from her birth until her death...and revealed how Ingrid Bergman felt about the things that were happening to her throughout her life. I thought the book was a page turner and I couldn't put it down.

Written with the exhaustive thoroughness readers have come to expect from Donald Spoto's celebrity biographies, Notorious moves smoothly through the details of actress Ingrid Bergman's life. Although most will equate the book's title with the 1946 Hitchock film that provided Bergman with one of her more complex and unusually dark roles, the very definition of the word proves an appropriate description of her life; derived from the Latin notus, notorious is defined as "famous or celebrated; secondarily, known for something not generally approved." Disapproval of Bergman--both virulent and far-reaching--stemmed from her extramarital affair with director Roberto Rosellini and the subsequent birth of their son (conceived before their marriage). It is this fall from grace that intrigues Spoto.

In 1939 Ingrid Bergman was hailed as a fresh-faced girl, "dignified, gracious, unpretentious and spiritual," who represented everything good that America loved and needed. Although already a wife and mother, she was most often described as innocent, even virginal. But in 1949 this perception changed, and Bergman was no longer a martyr for the sake of her movies; at the time, she was regarded as the foulest of sinners, a renegade whose "powerful influence for evil" was soon to be condemned in churches, schools, and even on the floor of the U. S. Senate. However, Spoto doesn't neglect Bergman's artistic drive and integrity; he creates a portrait of a woman on trial for aspiring to both professional success and intellectual fulfillment. The details accrue to portray a disarmingly modest professional--at times idolized, at times disparaged, but always skilled and committed.

Book Description

First time in paperback: "A resoundingly successful biography" (Washington Post) and the basis for a major television miniseries this year.

The life of Ingrid Bergman (1915-1982) is as compelling as that of any of the women she portrayed in dozens of unforgettable movies and plays-a list that includes Casablanca, Intermezzo, Gaslight, The Bells of St. Mary's, Notorious, Anastasia, and Hedda Gabler. Hers is a story that begins with a tragic childhood in Sweden, then moves on to the nightmare of Germany under the Nazis and later to Hollywood in its golden age. From her position as America's most beautiful, admired, and loved actress, she was plunged into national disgrace and branded "an apostle of degradation" for her adulterous love affair with Roberto Rosellini in the late 1940s. But her independent spirit triumphed in the end, winning her honors and accolades even as she fought an eight-year battle with cancer. Donald Spoto, who knew Ingrid Bergman and had unprecedented access to her husbands, friends, lovers, directors, and costars, as well as to her papers, letters, and diaries, has written a biography that the San Francisco Chronicle called "mesmerizing" and "deeply moving"-the definitive account of a consummate actress who dared to live the truth.

2 out of 5 stars A Valentine of Superlatives.......2004-09-08

I'd purchased this biography to learn more about a fascinating woman who left an indelible mark on her profession, acting. But my disappointment was great; this is less a biography than an infatuated paean -- something one might write for a fan club or public relations campaign. Though Mr. Spoto and his crew of researchers obviously undertook considerable investigation into Bergman's life, Mr. Spoto failed to complete the last -- and most important -- task of a biographer: a critical analysis of his subject. Instead, throughout the book, Mr. Spoto repeatedly (and I emphasize "repeatedly") flogs readers with superlatives about Bergman's acting, looks, intelligence, strength, spirit, wisdom, and character. Why the Pope hasn't yet canonized this woman, based on Mr. Spoto's writings, is beyond me -- perhaps it is only because she was not Catholic. I do hope that someday another biographer -- say, someone with the talents of Edward Tytell (biographer of Ezra Pound) or Noel Riley Fitch (biographer of Sylvia Beach and Julia Child) -- might undertake the task of penning a more informative, insightful biography of Bergman. The woman certainly deserves this.

5 out of 5 stars So St. Ingrid she wasn't..........2004-03-09

...so have you never made a mistake? We can thank her money-grubbing first husband Petter Lindstrom for her "indiscretions" with Roberto Rossolini and others---if he had spent more time as a loving mate instead of a calculating business manager who belittled Ingrid and put her on a paltry allowance, then maybe none of the nonsense which haunted her for so long would have happened at all. He played the boss, but she was the bread winner, and the shame of it is she let him get away with it!!

She had the same emotional needs as any other woman OR man. But only under the moralistic hyprocrisy of the U.S. at the time could such a woman (I doubt if a man would) have been so pilloried---the rest of the planet was not so hung up as we on attempting to be the guardian of world morals, especially when we had more than enough of our own dirty laundry we kept trying to hide.

No matter, because her beauty, wit and talent counted for more, and in the end she won anyway. She knew her craft well (who else would have felt secure enough to suggest script changes to Hitchcock, and have him acquiesce??) and lived it not at all for money or fame, but rather for the sake of the craft itself. And what she left to stage and screen through the body of her work, through her very presence, will forever be her only true legacy.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite "Notorious".......2003-10-20

She was Hollywood's golden girl, an actress who shone on the silver screen but never burned out. Despite worldwide fame, Ingrid Bergman's life was riddled with tragedies and problems, including an affair that could have wrecked her career.

Ingrid Bergman lost her parents, then her beloved aunt, as a young girl. Growing up in Nazi Germany, she soon became an actress and rose to fame, first in Sweden and then in Hollywood. Then problems arose -- Ingrid met one of her favorite directors, Roberto Rossellini, and left her husband for a whirlwind movie shoot/love affair. The scandal was overwhelming, and it was years until the stigma evaporated -- after which Ingrid was appreciated all over again for her talent and courage.

Donald Spoto's telling of Bergman's life is solid and informative, with quotations by Ingrid, her husbands, children, costars, directors, and lots of other people who had known her. Letters are reproduced, and her different performances are analyzed (some of these movies were downright terrible).

He also does a pretty good job of analyzing Ingrid's motivations -- why she was attracted to the elitist Peter and passionate Roberto, her strong artistic sense, her workaholic attitude, and her feelings about her children and loves. It's a pretty good analysis, overall.

Despite the title, the book isn't a dirt-fest. In fact, that's one of its weaknesses. Oh, it shouldn't be showing only her flaws, but Spoto seems to adore her a little too much. She herself is quoted as saying that she's imperfect. Even though Spoto reveals her weaknesses and failures, he doesn't seem to think any of them really matter.

It definitely could have used better perspective, but "Notorious: The Life of Ingrid Bergman" is a solid, interesting, well-written look at the life of a talented, artistic woman. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Don't mistake the title.......2002-09-01

This book isn't about everything bad that Ingrid did, even though that's the impression the title gives. This is a well and thoroughly researched and very readable biography. Donald Spoto speaks about Ingrid with respect, and although he mentions her weaknesses and failings, I don't feel he's doing it to spread dirt around. If it happened it happened, but he doesn't spend half the book talking about it.

Except where it concerns Rossellini, and that is perfectly understandable, because everyone who knows about Ingrid knows that was a real and terrible time in her life. I think it's sad that she went through all that and the marriage ended up falling apart anyway.

Anyway, basically he speaks of her work. She went crazy without it, and really as I think about it her life was work. That's what I remember froming reading this.

It is a very good book, and like everything I have read by Spoto, is well-written and highly interesting. I recommend it very much.

Is this a creative review or what? I seem to be suffering some sort of blank as far as reviews are concerned this morning.

5 out of 5 stars She really was notorious.......2002-07-16

I was a young adult when Ingrid died and I was not aware of her fame and reputation as a film star. I saw her occasionally in old movies and was fascinated by her glowing beauty and talent. I was appalled by her appearance in her role as Golda Meir; she had changed so much, but now I know why. Spoto's biography about Ingrid revealed her intimately -- from her childhood to her death, throughout her marriages and affairs, the successes of her career, and relationships with friends and family. I didn't know that she had been banned from America for her "sins", and I didn't know she had other children besides Isabella Rosselini. In spite of her foibles, Ingrid still seems like a great woman, thanks to the passionate -- and compassionate -- telling of her life story by Spoto. The audio version of the book was completely compelling to listen to, enhanced by the reader, C.M. Herbert, whose voice had a quality similar to Ingrid's, and therefore made Ingrid come even more to life.

I don't think I can say enough about Ingrid Bergman without sounding like an idiot, but Ingrid, to me, was one
great woman. I would classify her as the World's Greatest Icon. The photo of Ingrid on the Hollywood Icon Journals is equisitely beautiful. Now that I bought this Hollywood Icon Journal with Ingrid on the cover, I hate to use it. It's something you just don't want to mess up. It is a very well-bound book with fine, strong pages for recording data. I love this book. In fact, to preserve the beautiful photo cover of Ingrid on this book, I bought a plastic book cover for it. Anyone that loves Ingrid Bergman will love this wonderful book. It is something you will treasure for the rest of your life.

5 out of 5 stars Her Story, Completely.......2004-12-30

I was tempted to read one of the many biographies out there depicting the life of Ingrid Bergman before I found "My Story", and I am incredibly grateful that I found her story before the others. This book shines with Ingrid's own personal voice, and in so much of the book you can clearly hear her lilting charm creeping into your brain, so familiar and real that you could almost swear she was talking to no one else in the world but you at that moment. It takes a truly gifted person to transfer that much of themselves and their life's story onto simple pages in a book.

And what a story. Orphaned at a young age, she struggled with her incredible shyness throughout her childhood until she found solitude and happiness on the stage and in front of the camera. America and David O. Selznick wooed her over the Atlantic after a blossoming film career in Sweden, when several American reviewers poked humourous fun at the fact that Swedish movies of that time were rapidly becoming far superior to their American counterparts, thanks to the acting skills of one fair lady. Of course, the world knows about her now infamous illicit affair with Roberto Rossilini when she reigned in American movies with Selznick (she was comdemned on the Senate floor afterward for being so unwholesome in her choice), but her story doesn't revolve around excusing what she did. She explains the simple facts of the matter, with a bit of why, and she moves on, just as the American people did when they welcomed her back after a 7-year exile in Europe in her Oscar-winning performance as Anastasia. I don't even know how they resisted her that long, really.

But her life is an incredibly invoking read, with her ability to place herself within the pages as well as her fascinating history interweaving to form an unforgettable tale. This is one book that I can assure will not be forgotten easily. As she herself said "I went from saint to [...] and back again, all in one lifetime." Not many can say that, and not many can tell it with such grace. Truly a remarkable woman.

4 out of 5 stars A unique life.......2004-03-29

She made films with some of the best directors of the 20th century, weathered one of its biggest scandals, and is still known and loved for her performance in the classic "Casablanca." In "My Story," Ingrid Bergman (with the help of Alan Burgess) presented her unique life in her own words.

Orphaned as a child, Bergman became a successful actress in Sweden, and then transferred to Hollywood, where she starred in films such as "Casablanca" and several Alfred Hitchcock pictures. Al In "My Story," Bergman describes not only her working life, but the men she fell in love with and married (three wildly different men!), her four children, her ambitions ("Joan of Arc" was something she wanted to make for years), the scandals and the love that filled her career, and the cancer that ultimately ended her life.

Bergman's story has a candid quality that not many star autobiographies have. She had almost universal sympathy for others, such as her more difficult diectors and costars, or her ex-husbands. One moving passage has her describing how she wept at Rossellini's death, and was happy that third ex-husband Lars had become a father. Her writing isn't very detailed; at times, it's downright stilted. But it's pleasant enough to read, with elements of humor, of romance, of joy and sadness.

Between Bergman's anecdotes and stories, Burgess explains Bergman's life further, with "Ingrid got this part" or "Ingrid went here" or "this person said this thing about Ingrid." He quotes her frequently, along with letters, costars, and plenty of other information that Bergman might not have remembered or known about. He fills in the gaps, so to speak.

Bergman's bright personality and Burgess's tight journalism make this a unique book, describing the life of a unique woman. "My Story" is definitely worth telling.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book!.......2003-07-29

This book answers some of the questions lingering on
people's minds about Ingrid Bergman's personal life on
her point of view, in her own words. From the moment
I saw her on screen, I totally admired her, but when
I read this book I got to know her better.. as if she
were my close friend. She uses excellent sense of
humor and makes the reading fun.
From this book we can get more information about
the people she were related to.. some personal thoughts
that are funny, sometimes sad.

She HAD caused a major scandal once, and people
have doubts about her but once you read this book,
you can't NOT like her~! Her voice is so full of
emotions.. humor.. sadness.. so full of life.. as
well as her photos. (That's what I thought of the
moment I read this book. How well her voice in this
book matches her photos)
Wow.. I really can't
believe this book is out of copies because it's such
a great book that I think it should be printed out more!
I recommend this book to all.

4 out of 5 stars I can't believe this book is out of print.......2002-09-01

What shall I say about this book? I always enjoy autobiographies about people I like, and although I didn't know too much about Ingrid Bergman prior to reading this book, my interest in her life became stronger after finishing it. I made a list of all her movies and have been seeing them as I can get hold of them.

Profound statement: Ingrid tells about her life in this book. (duh)

She does a very good, coherent job, and moves along steadily. There is humour as well as sadness. I liked the part when she told David O Selznick at their first meeting that she would not wear makeup and would not change anything about her appearance, and if he didn't like it she would go back to Sweden on the next train. I personally am glad he decided she could remain as she was.

I recommend this book as a good introduction to Ingrid. I enjoyed reading this very much and I think everyone should read it.

4 out of 5 stars Bergman led an up and down life filled with emotion.......2001-02-24

"My Story" provides an excellent insight into the tumultuous existence of Ingrid Bergman. Her interaction With David Selznick, Roberto Rosselini, and her children provide excellent reading. And in large print, too!

I've read this book a number of times. Shannon Drake a.k.a Heather Graham is definitely one of my favorite authors. The novel features a headstrong but passionate heroine who is caught in a gently horrid nightmare that sees to the end of her innocence. The hero is pure male. Bold, brilliant and utterly smitten, he struggles to balance his suspicions of the girl with his lust for her. If you enjoy the concept "break up to make up," you'll love Rose and Pierce's story about two people who struggle to let go and let love. A must read, indeed.

              5 out of 5 stars Greatest Book!.......2004-02-15

I'v read this book for long time and it still my favourite book I've ever read.It perfect for romance book. This is the book I will recommend anyone to read.

              2 out of 5 stars So standard................2003-08-26

This book was so standard that it was almost painful to read. I liked the characters well anough, but there was so much that the author could have done that she just didn't go through with.

I enjoyed this book but it was not one of my favorites. The story kept you going but it was NOT something you just couldn't put down. I read it throughout the week and it was nice for hourly entertainment. I felt that Pierce was annoying at times especially dealing with his lack of faith. Rose Woodbine-way to go. You rock. She was an awesome heroine. Pierce did not deserve her.

5 out of 5 stars You would want to read this masterpiece!.......2000-02-17

This 3rd book in the TRADE WINDS series is sure to knock you off your feet! Devora Ashby is eagerly awaiting her upcoming wedding to the handsome Spanish/English buccaneer Bruce (Nicklas) Valentin. But treachery awaits them both as betrayal becomes a factor in this story. Bruce faces confrontation and the test of his faith as he tries to fulfill his plans for Devora, his crewmen and the treasure. Devora faces her mother's declining health and unwanted advances of Bruce's father, Maximus. Will Devora forgive her mother for abandoning her when she was a child? Will they ever escape to Barbados and can Bruce elude the inquistors? Will Bruce and Maximus ever make peace between them? A great story about love, forgiveness, pirate battles, swordfights and passion. Linda Chaikin did an excellent job on this series and I can't wait to see what's coming up next on her agenda!

              5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......1999-12-28

As time draws near, the noose tightens, etc, etc, etc, anyways Bruce aka Nicklas realizes his brother is clearly onto him and his fatherly will also soon find out his secret, so he decides to try and sneak out while Devora goes ahead of him on another ship, but before he can quite get out of harbor the cannons are drawn on him and his ship sinks, and of cource his father finds him out.

After being forced into hard labor, Bruce still patronizes his father and still seeks his revenge, though in a more silent way.

But with revenge comes a new understanding that revenge is bittersweet and doesn't always have the desired affect.

Linda ends her Trade Winds trilogy with dynamic gusto and flair. As good as all the other 2 books were, what with the first meeting, and then the recognization, I felt that the conclusion of the trilogy was the best!

5 out of 5 stars Devora and Bruce are finally together........1999-07-06

The romance, faith, bravery and nobility that only knowing Christ can give is shown wonderfully in this book. You won't be able to put it down and it will challange you to live to your true potential reguardless of the cost. Great book and series!!!!

2 out of 5 stars An Unsuccessful Portrait of the Muse.......2002-12-31

The Bride of the Wind, while scrupulously researched, fails to bring its subject to life. Alma Mahler must have been possessed of much charisma and fire to attract the geniuses that she did, but Keegan's dry account of Alma's self-absorption and reputed beauty left me wondering what she had missed, since the portrait does not accord with the events of the subject's life. (The movie of the same title, by the way, has the same flaw, though it at least paints an atmospheric picture of turn-of-the-century Viennese society, which the book also fails to do.) The book also bogs down with information about Austrian history and classical music that is far too inside-baseball to be interesting to a general reader.

4 out of 5 stars Bride of the Wind: The last of her kind.......2001-10-29

The Bride of the Wind by Susanne Keegan is the perfect biography for anyone wanting to avoid a stale representation of the illustrious Austro-German arts community in late nineteeth-century and early twentieth century. Written by a woman about a woman, this account contains insights and even some facts that a male biographer would have left out, yet these are the very facts which bring out the qualities of an historical figure which can affect his or her resurrection to the modern world.
Most interesting for anyone intrigued in the enigmatic character of Gustav Mahler are the accounts of Alma's 12 years with him. Keegan sheds light on a side of Mahler most biographers gloss over for fear of blurring the importance of his music. However, one might find that after reading about Mahler from Alma's point of view (and with the help of Keegan's many intuitive insights), that one can dig deeper into the emotional maze that is his music than ever before.
Susanne Keegan has made an accurate and insightful chronicle of a life that affected so many men of importance around her, a life which hitherto has, before this book, been left largely to mere speculation. She has done for Alma what Henri de la Grange has done for Mahler.
Look for the movie based on this book which will hopefully be coming out soon.

2 out of 5 stars I got through it, but it was a struggle........2004-05-08

              1879

Tough, independent, smart, savvy, and beautiful seventeen-year-old Texan, Hope Cox, has dreams of owning her own cattle ranch, winning the women's suffrage movement and is passionate about becoming a state legislator. Her pap, Pat Cox, is a hard drinking, lazy, out-of-work, ex-Confederate horse soldier, cow wrangler, and scout.

During one of his drinking stupors, her pap is accused of helping rob a bank and lands in prison waiting to hang the next day. Just in time Hope successfully breaks her pap out of prison through a phony governor's pardon and by a crowbar to the warden's crotch. They immediately sign up for a cattle drive that will travel through Wyoming with the famous "Uncle" John Chisum. Hope quickly falls in lust for the good-looking trail boss, Jeb Mason. Jeb also has future political ambitions. During the trail drive, they encounter a rich Wyoming rancher and his dashingly handsome Irish foreman, Timothy O'Callahan. The Wyoming rancher pays beyond top dollar to immediately purchase the "cow critters" and deliver them to his ranch. Hope and Timothy are immediately attracted to each other and Hope must decide which man will win her heart. Timothy advises Hope to stake out a Wyoming ranch site once they arrive in the Powder River area while Jeb returns to Texas continuing to work for "Uncle" John.

Courageous Hope successfully starts her ranch and passionately lobbies for women's rights and their entitlement to vote. Through extreme trials and tribulations, Hope and Jeb marry. Hope becomes a Justice of the Peace and Jeb becomes a U.S. Congressman with his eye on the Wyoming governorship. Jeb is killed by an explosion and U.S. Marshall Timothy O'Callahan re-enters Hope's life as she is elected Wyoming's first woman governor.

I stuck with the book but struggled through it with a wandering mind. For a historical western it is superbly realistically told with meticulously explained details; so much so that the crux of the situation could have been explained in just a couple of pages, not as long and drawn out as it was.

The heroine is portrayed as a tomboy know-it-all, can-do-it-all educated woman, but she speaks in absurdly ridiculous dialogue. The male counterparts are not described as magnificently as one hope in a romance novel and it didn't incite a dynamic zing. I think this reads more like a Zane Grey story rather than a romance novel.
