5 out of 5 stars Great overview of the horror genre.......2002-07-16

This is a very interesting portrait of a much abused genre. The essays a quite wonderful, with the essay on Polanski's Repulsion worth the price of the book alone.

I discovered many movies from reading this book, and I am still on the hunt for some of them. But the hunt is a pleasure.

      Book Description

What in contemporary cinema is a horror film and what is a science fiction movie? Blade Runner (1982) is as much film noir as science fiction, and it is a literary adaptation. The latest remake of The Mummy (1999) is more an effects fantasy or action/adventure than straightforward horror. Whatever your viewpoint, the best of these movies have generated cults and imitations and the worst have a wonderfully perverse appeal all of their own.
This new volume in the Sight and Sound readers series provides a varied and diverse overview of trends that have shaped sci-fi/horror in the last decade. It explores how recent films like The Fight Club and The Truman Show have impinged on more traditional territory and have tested the limits of conventional understandings of these most central of genres.
The book engages with a host of topics that have emerged over the last decade: vampire movies, body horror, the nuclear threat, childhood terror, artificial worlds, and postmodern horror. It includes fresh looks at classics such as Rosemary's Baby, Psycho, Halloween, Nosferatu, and Blade Runner, as well as 90s highlights the Scream series, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Strange Days Existenz, and Cube.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for any film buff........2002-06-10

If you can't afford or simply can't find issues of the excellent British film magazine, SIGHT AND SOUND, then this book is for you. It is essentially a compliation of reviews, articles and interviews from the magazine with the focus on science fiction and predominantly horror films.

Assembled and edited (with the occasional review written) by Kim Newman, this book is a fantastic overview of these two genres in the past decade. He traces the rise and fall of the teenage postmodern horror film (i.e. SCREAM) and even devotes a chapter to Kubrick's influence on the science fiction and horror genre.

Whether I agree or disagree with the views expressed in the book, I was always impressed by the quality of writing. S&S only publishes the best writers and shows why the British film magazines are so much better than their fluffy US equivalents (i.e. PREMIERE).

If you like substantial, thoughtprovoking film criticism, this is the book to buy.

            5 out of 5 stars Shines on.......2004-03-28

Although many would pick Stanley Kubrich's film (1980)over the 4hr. 20min. film, I think wouldn't. I did enjoy Stanley's yet i feel that it lacked the "pizazz" that the book and the miniseries truly held. The book was wonderful in my opinion mostly because it held some truth and horror that most books often lack. The character Jack Torrance was made to be similiar to Stephen King but different enough to where it would be easy to distinguish them. When Stephen King went up to The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, he was enspired to write the -probably most famous- book of Stephen King's. Stephen King was a recovering alcoholic and he was surprised by how he could sometimes be so angry with his children because he himself had not had a father most of his life so he thought of the character jack that was a reflection of his true self but not a mirror image. He then thought that maybe if Jack had a child with psychic abilities, and a wife similiar to his own, that maybe he would have a real thriller. So in the Stanley Hotel, Stephen King got lost in the halls and that's when the idea struck him. He then began his world wide sold book. So now if you were to go to probably any bookstore, you'd find THE SHINING and if you were to go to any movie store, you'd find both the miniseries and the movie there to rent(that is unless someone hasn't already checked it out).

The Shining Reader is a collection of 15 critical essays on Stephen King's The Shining edited by Anthony Magistrale. The essays are broken down into three categories : The Shining as text (6), The Shining's literary tradition (6), and The Shining as film (3). While this might be a little much for the casual fan, it is geared more towards the hardcore King/Shining fan lurking inside some of us. When this out of print book showed up in my mailbox, I couldn't wait to finish what I was currently reading so that I could begin this one. To make things even more interesting, a copy of ABC's The Shining miniseries on VHS arrived to further engross me in all things Shining. A fan? Sure but that's who this little bit of extra credit is for. If you're like me, it was worth finding this out of print book to satisfy that guilty little literary pleasure short of reading the original book one more time.

            4 out of 5 stars Overall, a Great Collection..........2006-01-30

The Complete Country Blues Guitar Book has tabs for a wide variety of blues styles, including Delta, Rag, Texas, and bottleneck. The one point that keeps me from rating it 5 stars is the CDs, one of which was defective. I contacted Mel Bay Publishing by e-mail, advised them of the problem, and they promptly sent me a replacement along with a nice apology. That issue aside, I am very pleased with the overall collection. Get this if blues is your thang...

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2003-09-04

I haven't played guitar for about ten years, and got this book to get myself back into it. It's great, I can't put it down, and I'm actually learning the pieces!
Defintely recommended, but not for a complete beginner.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasury of Country Blues Guitar Styles.......2003-07-29

Stefan Grossman has been the world authority on fingerstyle blues guitar for decades now, and this book is the biggest compendium of his work as an educator. He tabs out fifty-seven (fifty-seven!) songs in a variety of styles and tunings, enough to keep any student busy for a year or more.

This isn't so much a method book--though I taught myself to play country blues from it--as a large tab compendium with helpful tips about each song. Each song has at least one fully-transcribed verse. Many have intros and outros, and some are complete arrangements. Most of the book covers the alternating bass and ragtime traditions of the Memphis and Piedmont blues, but there are seven Delta tunes, and excellent seven-song chapter on Texas blues, and even a good number of bottleneck tunes. Most of the songs are old standards ("Crow Jane","Vestapol","Hard Time Killin' Floor") taken from the original recordings by artists like Reverend Gary Davis, Mance Liscomb, and Blind Blake.

The "handwritten" tab is large and easy to read--you'll never be able to go back to that tiny Hal Leonard/Guitar Player tab after this. There are lots of photos of old bluesmen as well as atmospheric old-South pictures from the Library of Congress collection. It's so attractive I keep it on my coffee table. The CDs feature Grossman playing the tabbed arrangements (and then some) as well as original Blind Lemon Jefferson tracks. They're listenable in their own right, even if you aren't learning the guitar!

If you're interested in pre-war blues guitar, and you already known how to play five or six chords (remember, this book teaches country blues, not guitar), this is easily the best bang for your music buying buck.

I have a couple of other John Ganapes books and they are certainly good for the basics. However, this is my favorite because it covers more advanced topics: seventh chord structures, ii-V-I progressions, extended ii-V-I progressions, secondary dominant chords, flat-five substitution, minor blues harmony, major & minor chord substitutions, and a lot more. If you want to break out of the pentatonic box, this will propel you forward.

5 out of 5 stars great stuff in this book.......2006-11-10

This book has it all, easy to understand, lots of different styles. I had never played jazz and I wanted to learn more about it. this book went way beyond my expectations. The book has the accompaniment and the solo part to all the tunes ( lot of them ) in the book. I think if you take this book one step at a time ,soon you'll be able to jam with anybody.

This product made learning the basics easy and fun. It's a great tool because you don't have to be able to read music to learn b/c it also has the songs and scales tabbed out for you. The cd is also a big help in figuring out beats...making sure you get the song right...and playing along. I greatly enjoyed this product.
