Gary Cooper off Camera is a tribute to a Hollywood star that manages to be sentimental, glossy, and passionate all at the same time. A fond introduction by Tom Hanks opens the book, but its multifaceted pleasures spring from the love of author Maria Cooper Janis, who clearly felt it was a unique and great privilege to be the daughter of Gary Cooper. Janis's writing--from the loving letter to her father's ghost to the text that accompanies the many photographs--is charged with filial warmth.
Though the book offers many glimpses of Cooper on the set, it also sheds light on sides of the actor that never appeared on screen: the family man, the sportsman, the host and guest who opened his affections to many Hollywood luminaries. It is these photographs that really make the book a delight. The camera has loved very few men as much as it did Cooper, and this collection captures the ease and joy of an American icon who in films often played awkward and alienated figures. Page after page of extraordinary black-and-white shots reveal the warm relationships Cooper had with his family, and with friends like Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, and Jimmy Stewart. This volume offers a tender view into a rare and fading kind of celebrity life, one that appears to have been somehow both glamorous and private. --Raphael Shargel

GARY COOPER FANS...ATTENTION!!.......2005-09-24
This is a great book for initial insight into Gary Cooper by his daughter. It is very obvious she adored her father. The book is very informative about the personal life of "Coope" with many wonderful pictures, however, the book is more images than writing. The details are only touched on. If you are a Gary Cooper & you want many unseen pictures, this is the book for you...
Daddy's Girl .......2004-09-15
The cover photograph, of Gary Cooper spoon-feeding ice-cream to his daughter on the streets of "Hadleyville," is a poignant clue to what follows. Maria Cooper was a girl who lived a very rarified life, and she lets us take a delicious peek at it.
Beautiful Pictures Captures Public Image.......2004-04-03
Well, let me start with what beautiful tribute this book is to her father. Maria Cooper's book is beautiful, but too many of the pictures look posed (Hollywood style). And the pictures that are actually not posed say more in body language about a family that clearly protects the Cooper family image. These people are beautiful, but they are too perfect: clothes, hair, makeup, you know it's all there. One picture I found fascinating, is of the three of them on a beach facing the ocean. Maria and her mom on the left, and further away is Gary Cooper and his body language is quite clear. Hmmm, that definitely was a candid shot. And if anyone is really looking, the beautiful Maria seems to be the glue that kept that family together. There is a gorgeous shot of the three of them in their ski clothes in an old house. Rocky with little makeup is quite beautiful, but Maria and her Dad are the ones in sync in this picture. I don't know, but these pictures show a definite strain in the family relationship far more than I ever realized. With friends, the pictures are happier. I am a fan of Gary Cooper's and always will be. And the fact, that he adored his beloved daughter and she adored him is clearly seen in this book. Maria Cooper shows us a Gary Cooper I have already seen in other pictures other people have taken of him. There really isn't a lot of hugging, and touching, and birthday parties, water fights, and family occasions, events, like most people and other stars have of their lives while children are growing up. I would love to have seen a picture of Mr. Cooper in his overalls in his garden (he was an avid gardener), teaching Maria to do things, showing her how to ride a horse, acting goofy.. Maria Cooper is quite lovely, and this book is wonderful to look at, but I don't really feel anything but a little sadness that she didn't show us more candid and "real" photographs about of her Dad and the family. There was a great deal more to this man than meets the eye. I didn't get too much of a glimpse into that.
Gary Cooper Off Camera.......2001-07-14
In a day and age when the children of "the stars" write the most deplorable books about their parents, this book is a wonderfully tender tribute to a true hero. Absolutely refreshing.
An Appealing Memoir.......1999-11-06
Smack in the middle of these cynical, jaded times comes this warm and appealing memoir by Maria Cooer Janis of her father, acting legend Gary Cooper. How wonderful! Maria Cooper Janis's open love for her father is there for all to see on every page. This alone makes the book worth owning. We've come to expect the negative, the cynical, in books of this type. But Ms. Janis has put together an extened love letter to her father and mother. And good for her!
Book Description
The most beautiful photo book on Marilyn ever published! All iconic images from Avedon to Weegee. Marilyn Monroe posed for nearly every major photographer of her day. This pictorial chronicle features pictures by Richard Avendon, Cecil Beaton, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Elliott Erwitt, Philippe Halsman, Weegee, and thirty other artists: her early days as a model for ads and pinup calendars, film stills that follow her career from a minor actress to a major star, famous master portraits and shots by paparazzi who trailed her every move.
Marilyn emerges in all her moods - young and carefree, sexy and serious, glamorous and girl-next-door. In a fascinating and revealing interview with French writer Georges Belmont Marilyn sets the record straight about her early life, her ambitions, fears, and dreams. Jane Russell, a friend of Marilyn's and her co-star in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, wrote an affectionate foreword.

This is a great book, a few pictures are grainy, but 95% are sharp rich and gorgeously clear.
I was shocked that I had not seen some of the images. I collect her images, and have a lot of them on my computer that most people haven't seen. So this is a stellar collection indeed and a must for Marilyn fans. I have the "Marilyn A life in Pictures" and still this book had even more. I do recommend both books highly.
All the necessities.......2003-11-02
This book features pictures from Marilyn's life ranging from her modeling days as Norma Jeane up until her death. You get many of the "classic" Monroe photos here, including the gold dress, the white dress scene from the Seven Year Itch, and several movie stills. Several candid shots are also included as well as some lesser seen ones from photograph sessions. Jane Russell paints an endearing picture of Monroe in the forward. We also get an interview with Monroe. It is a widely known fact that Marilyn embellished parts of her childhood and she does so here, claiming her mother is dead, when Marilyn's mom actually outlived her for more than 30 years. Nevertheless, Monroe appears beautiful, vulnerable, ans sensuous all rolled into one in these images. You get a lot of pics for a reasonable price.
great collection of photos.......2003-09-18
I love this book because it is pure marilyn. The book shows her at her best. There are no conspiracies, scandals or judgements made about her in this book. It is just about the love that she had for the camera. She understood the camera better that anyone I can think of and it is her element, like a fish in water. Many authors write books on her to try to explain who she was,(99% of them never even knew her.) but all you have to do to really know her is study her pictures. They truly reveal every aspect of her, and that's why this book was made.
Good place to start for Marilyn photos........2003-07-15
One of the first Marilyn books I got was a compilation of photographs from well-known photographers. It wasn't till later that I got the original primary sources, i.e. books by Eve Arnold, and collections by Bernard Bruno and Bert Stern. So once one gets this collection, one can decide which photographer captured Marilyn's beauty the best, be it Milton Greene, Bernard Bruno, Richard Avedon, Ed Feingersh, or my personal favourite, Andre de Dienes. The photos, both colour and B&W, accompanied by captions, take the reader on a chronological journey from 1945 to her death in 1962.
Well-known photographs include the Tom Kelley photo that led to the notorious nude calendar, her potato sack dress, the photo Andy Warhol used, her wearing the golden dress, and the Life magazine photo. The final picture is not of her but her obituary flashing across Times Square.
Other material include a 1960 interview done with Georges Belmont for the French magazine Marie Claire. She talks mostly about her early life as a child before going into her adult life. Jane Russell, who was her costar in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, does a brief but generous foreword on her recollections.
Other photos include scenes from movies, press conferences, and other occasions. There's an annotated biography and filmography in the rear of the book. Each film entry has the distributing company, year, starring cast, and the name of Marilyn's character. As for the bibliography, I was surprised to see I had nine of the books used.
This serves as a cross-section of photos taken by various photographers as well as a photographic history. Good for beginning MM students, as it was for me back then.
wonderful pictures.......2001-02-26
This is a wonderful book to add to your collection, although filled w/ a majority of pictures that you may have already seen (a few you may have not seen), it is a wonderful collection and great to see them all together!

The business / The Hollywood continuity style.......1999-04-01
I have read all of Richard Brestoffs books. And taken many of his classes. By far, this was my preferred book that landed me a 3-day part on Melrose Place.
Dream your Dream, Buy this Book, and apply the techniques...
Thanks Richard! Matthew Lucas
This is a wonderful book!!.......1998-05-22
I never really understood the film making process until I read this book. It is written with a real human spirit as he takes us through step-by-step. I felt as if I was on that shoot myself - nervous and anxious about everything that the character "Newcomer" was faced with and didn't understand. What a relief to have a book that finally explains all the terminology and gives specific advise on what to expect and how to meet the acting demands of working on a set. If you're in the Seattle area, you should check out his classes. He's a very gifted teacher as well.
It's the best!.......1998-04-16
Richard Brestoff discusses acting brilliantly and tells what we REALLY should know about acting in front of a camera and on a set/location for television/movie acting. This book was by far the most interesting, helpful, informative piece of literature about acting I've ever been so lucky to get my hands on! I only wish I could thank him personally.
I loved this book!!!.......1998-03-16
Even as a non-actor, I found the comments and information in this book fascinating. It explains the duties of various film crew members, and details the steps involved in making a film. I'll never watch TV or movies the same again!
Book Description
In this lively anthology, leading film actors from the silent era to the present-Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo, Marcello Mastroianni, Henry Fonda, Meryl Streep, and many others-describe the art and technique of acting for film. Illustrated with over fifty movie stills, the book provides a fascinating mix of shoptalk, anecdotal history, personal reminiscence, philosophy, and practical acting advice from a stellar cast of favorite screen performers.
Customer Reviews:
An absorbing blend of history, biography & acting insights........2000-03-05
Film actors discuss their experiences in a changing industry, from Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo to Henry Fonda and Meryl Streep, in Bert Cardullo, et.al.'s absorbing blend of history, autobiography and acting insights. Playing To The Camera pairs their experiences with over fifty movie stills and observations on the acting world and makes this particularly accessible to aspiring actors interested in how the medium has changed.
Amazing insight, once you get past the Brit-lit doggerel........1998-07-16
Playing to the Camera only wishes it was as academic as its editors would have you believe. Between long-winded, professorial previews of each subject lies fascinating first-person accounts of an ever-evolving medium. You hear from silent greats like Louise Brooks--her interview alone is worth the price of the book--to modern stars like Streep and the rest. What you see is that the more film technology changes, the more it stays the same. The actors, technicians all, bare their trained souls and share their insights into film acting.

Great Insight.......2005-02-19
This book paints a picture of the time, effort, and committment required to be a professional child actor. It gives a "day in the life" immediacy to the child actor's work.
It is neither a biography of Philip Waller, the subject of the book, nor is it the glitter you'd see on "Entertainment Tonight" or other gossip type venues. It avoids dealing with how much money actors make or the celebrity aspects of the actor's life.
This book should be required reading for any child-or parent of a child-who expresses interest in becoming a professional actor.
Great for letting kids know they are not alone!.......1998-01-05
On Camera gives kids a good overview of what it is like to be a child actor. It is written simply enough so that young kids can read it on their own and know that another kid somewhere is experiencing the same things they are. A great little gift for the child actor in your life.

Okay, so I told him off. He was being nasty to the hairdresser. Rude. I told him he looked okay. I thought he might be really annoyed at me. But instead of writing me off, he asked me to be his girl.

Lights! Camera! Love!.......2000-05-09
Overall I really did like this book. Although it is very predictable, towards the end you are in for a surprise. I did not put this book down the whole time. I recommend this book for a 12 or 13 year old girl who enjoys book with romance and a little bit of suspense. At times in this book I found myself confused, but don't worry it will all come together towards the end. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!

Customer Reviews:
Good solos, but light on technique/exercises.......2006-06-15
As previously mentioned, this is probably not a great book to start with if you're new to the mandolin. There are good arrangements, each with a melody and solo, but other than the few obligatory "how to read notation and tablature" and "how to hold the mandolin" pages, there's not much in the way of helpful exercises or theory. It's hard to "Teach Yourself" from this book alone.
One thing worth noting for crossover musicians, though, is that this book has a lot of tunes in common with Tony Trischka's "Teach Yourself Bluegrass Banjo", also from Oak publishing.
Great instructional book, but not necessarily for beginners.......2005-11-28
Teach Yourself Bluegrass Mandolin is a great instructional guide for mandolin. It is clearly written and provides both melody and solo parts for a number of traditional bluegrass tunes. The CD that accompanies it is an added bonus for those that like to hear exactly how each tune is supposed to sound. However, if you are picking up a mandolin for the first time with no previous experience playing a stringed instrument this book may leave you frustrated. I had a few years of experince playing guitar so the switch wasn't too difficult. However, I know that I was starting for the first time I would be hard pressed to play many of the songs in this book. The tunes on the CD are played quite fast, especially for beginners. If you are looking for a beginners guide I would pick something a little easier. But once you've built up your dexerity and you're ready to move up I would recommend this book.
Teach Yourself Bluegrass Mandolin.......2004-01-31
Nice book, great music. The music on the CD is great. But if you are a beginner, this is not the place to begin. Although it is fun to listen to, it is way too fast and way too difficult for a beginner.
Good material, but it's not Andy on the CD.......2003-11-12
I had the privilege to study mandolin with Andy Statman back in the early 80's. His phrasing and harmonic sense was/is unlike anyone I'd ever heard play the instrument and owes as much to Coltrane and Albert Ayler as it does to Bill Monroe. To his credit as a teacher, Andy never erected walls between genres and always emphasized the blues as the "common thread" linking bluegrass, jazz and most American music. The tunes in the book are all bluegrass chestnuts you'll want to know to jam with others. If you're interested in improvisation, examine closely the solos printed below the melody lines. While sticking fairly close to the melody there's a subtle chromatic spice in there that will stretch your ears and encourage you to take chances.
My only gripe: The original edition of this book had no recording - this revised edition does but, unfortunately, the band doesn't include Andy. The player is competent but I'd encourage anyone interested in great mandolin playing to seek out Statman on record.
Great songs to learn, not the best teaching.......2003-05-03
THe songs in this book are a great collection of things that are great to learn. Each song has two ways to play it: the melody and a solo-type version. I have found that you can go through it and learn the melody parts then probably go back and be ready for the harder solo version. The reference CD has great playing on it, but it is a bit fast, and could be discouraging for the true beginner. Buy this book to learn with. Hold off on using the CD until you are really getting the stuff under your fingers.

Great book for the Bluegrass Mandolin player of all levels........2007-07-07
This is a great book and incredible series by Alfred Publishing (I buy mostly Alfred book as they are the best for your money). This one is specifically for Mandolin but there is a corresponding book for Banjo and Guitar and a corresponding DVD for each. I recommend the DVD if you are new to the Mandolin and need a quickstart guide to Mandolin technique and chording Ultimate Beginner: Bluegrass Mandolin Basics and Beyond. Dennis Caplinger is one of the best Multi-instrumentalists out there in the Bluegrass genre. Everything in the book and CD is detailed in Mandolin TAB so note reading isn't required. There are Bluegrass standards like Blackberry Blossom, Black Mountain Rag, Dixie, and John Hardy all recorded on the CD so you can really hear the Mandolin in the mix. Both single note lines and chords are presented separately and are extensively broken down into small parts, then all put together in the last part of the book so you can play the songs solo on your shiny new Mandolin. If you want to be a Bluegrass multi-instrumentalist get all three books in the series.
