New Blood.......2007-06-27
In 1959 Jean-Luc Godard released his debut feature length film A bout de soufflé, Breathless, and thereby created the film that would open a new type of filmmaking consisting of jump shots and filmed with handheld cameras. However, the true impact of French New Wave cinema was a new type of protagonist one who was "alienated, disaffected, violent, a product of media (especially cinema), this new hero was an accurate harbinger of the youthful rebellions and protests that rocked France and the Western world a little later, in the `60s" (Desser, p.1). During this same year Oshima Nagisa released his debut film Ai to kibo no machi, A Town of Love and Hope which began a new wave of cinema in Japan as well. However, while the French New Wave cinema came under close scrutiny from Western critics and film scholars, Japanese New Wave Cinema as a whole, at least in 1988 when this book was published, had received little attention from both Western and Japanese scholars. Individual directors such as Oshima Nagisa, Imamura Shohei, and Shinoda Masahiro had received some attention, but a study of Japanese New Wave cinema and its relation to the culture and history of 1960s had yet to be made, however, with this book Desser hopes to fill this gap.
The subjects covered in Eros Plus Massacre, the title take from a 1969 Yoshida Yoshishinge film of the same name, concern a number of subjects that are important to Japanese New Wave Cinema: politics, youth, identity and its relationship with sexuality, women, minority groups, and other issues specifically related to film such as cinematic time versus real time. Each chapter generally begins with a summation of the history of the time period and then how filmmakers responded to these given situations. Such as in the first chapter "Night and Fog in Japan: Ideology and Narrativity" in which Desser gives a brief albeit detailed history of the period for example the controversy of the resigning of the Japan-U.S. Mutual Security Pact. After the brief history, Desser details a few films that directly address each issue. The film critique is split between issues of social relevance and an analysis of film technique. For those who are unfamiliar with cinematic terminology some of these passages can seem quite dry and because of the unavailability of many of these films in the Western market self critique can prove to be quite difficult. However, the issues of social relevance in 1960s Japan far outweigh the possible dryness of the filmic language used. It is quite valuable to understand what issues were being tossed about when the directors made there films. Also, for literature fans, it can help to give light to the concerns found in the literature of Oe Kenzaburo, Murakami Haruki, etc.
One aspect of the book that the reader will quickly notice is Desser's less than keen opinion of the scholarship performed by other film scholars such as Joan Mellen, Keiko McDonald, and especially Noel Burch. In his introductory chapter, Desser states that his method of film evaluation is not perfect and that there are many other ways that these films can be studied, however, at some points his critique of other scholars almost comes off sounding condescending.
A good book on a subject that has yet to receive enough academic attention, Desser's Eros Plus Massacre does a fine job in introducing and critiquing a number of films that might have sunk into obscurity in the West. With the recent trend of worldwide politics drifting to a far more conservative nature, the Japanese New Wave films along with their French, British, and American counterparts should come under increased study to show how cinema can be used to cast light on the problems of the world and modern society itself.
The most comprehensive look at Japanese New Wave you'll find.......2001-03-27
This is a terrific over-view of the major proponents of the Japanese New Wave. Taking chapter names from film milestones of this important, overlooked movement, EPM is a smart, concise look at a complex area of cinema.

Book Description
Cows and horses, donkeys and mules, sheep and goats, pigs and fowl, even llamas are living on small farms and in backyard barnyards throughout the United States. But how and where are these critters being housed?
Author Carol Ekarius knows. In How to Build Animal Housing, she provides dozens of plans--with illustrated, step-by-step instructions--for species-specific shelters that are well ventilated, safe, appropriate for the animals, appealing, convenient, and a solid value for their owners.
The book is essential reading for anyone interested in animal health and welfare. It includes complete plans and step-by-step, illustrated instructions for sheds, coops, hutches, multipurpose barns, and economical easy-to-build windbreaks and shade structures. Ekarius covers new high-tech, portable structures made of plastics and fabrics, such as hoop houses and hen spas, as well as more traditional alternatives, such as straw-bale structures. Always practical, she enumerates the advantages and disadvantages of ready-to-build kits and modular barnyard buildings and includes designs for watering systems, feeders, chutes, stanchions, and more--the essentials that help owners keep their animals healthy and happy.
Ekarius wisely emphasizes the importance of careful planning, choosing an appropriate housing site, and complying with local zoning regulations; pest control, basic housing maintenance, and insurance costs are also discussed. Real-world advice from farmers and veterinarians on the types of housing and facilities animals like best enliven the text throughout.
How to Build Animal Housing is the most comprehensive and useful guide of its kind. For small-scale farmers, hobby farmers, do-it-yourselfers, and animal lovers, this book is indispensable.

Love this book!.......2007-09-09
This book is absolutely fantastic for those who are just starting out. There are plans and pictures for every style and taste you may be searching for. It's easy to read...with great graphics.
handy.......2007-08-10
As a hobby, I enjoy capturing wild animals and putting them in cages. But I am fairly new to this hobby, so I do not own a lot of cages. This book has helped me learn how to build my own animal cages.
As a child, I enjoyed going to the zoo. But something was always missing in the zoo experience. Now that I am an adult, and capturing my own wild animals, I feel more fulfilled.
When I see an animal in a cage, it makes me feel important and powerful, especially if I'm the one who captured the animal.
Important details left out........2007-08-08
This is a great book for ideas. It falls very short on important details.
This book is about building animal shelters, but none of these plans
have a listing of the parts needed. This is doubly important because
these are complicated plans. I would like to build the rabbit house,
but now I am having to approximate what I need. The author needs to
remember that someone wanting to use this book might live 20 miles away
from the hardware store.
A little bit of everything, not enough details on any specific group of live-stock.......2007-07-24
I was looking for a book on how to build satisfactory chicken and duck housing. This book has a couple of plans for chicken coops, but not enough to buy the book. Why did I give it four stars then? Because the book is designed to give you building plans for various types of live-stock (pigs, hourses, cows, chickens, goats, rabbits, and others). The book does give you 60 plans like it says it does, but there is never more than 2 and at the most three on any specific animal.
This book does have a lot of good information in it beyond the housing plans. It has minimal spacing for your animals, safety and health of your animals, plus it has lots of good pieces of advice throughout the book that has been picked up over 30 plus years. If your like me and are looking to build housing for a specific type of live stock then this is probably not the best book for you (for chickens I would suggest "Poultry House Construction" by Michael Roberts). However, if your looking to build housing for various breeds of live-stock then this book would be a wise purchase. However, a materials list would have been nice (not enough books give them).
A little disappointing.......2007-07-16
I was a bit disappointed to find the plans in this book are USDA plans from the 1970s and were not in my view very creative or innovating or interesting. The rabbit house was just a shed of small cages, aimed at someone raising rabbits for food, I suppose, and not in any way pleasant for the rabbits.
Book Description
This innovative, visual, interactive package consists of a worktext, a 105-minute videocassette, and an interactive CD-ROM with Web link capacity. Packaged together for each student, these carefully integrated elements offer an exceptional "how to" experience for learning the skills needed to facilitate group counseling. The authors focus on counseling skills with five actual groups led by trained practitioners: a women's group, an adolescent boys' group, a graduate student group, a middle school anger management group, and a co-counseled adult group. Highly interactive and reflective, actual group counseling sessions appear on the video and CD-ROM to help students visualize the needed skills in group counseling and to learn to identify the skills the counselor uses. Based on the popular and extensively class-tested model the authors developed for their first integrated multimedia teaching and learning package (BASIC COUNSELING RESPONSES), Haney and Liebsohn structure this group counseling learning system around 15 counselor responses or skills and the counselor's associated intents and focuses. This unique model, including both groups and sub-groups, is supported with excellent, spontaneous, real life group session footage from each of the five groups. The authors' easy-to-learn approach to essential group counseling skills addresses the new group counselor's fears by providing first-hand visual examples, a clear and useful structure or system for learning skills, and many opportunities for hands-on learning.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent text for the beginning counselor or student.......2006-10-31
This book comes with a CD and video. It offers excellent definitions and examples of group counseling skills. In addition it offers a number of written scenarious and exercises to practice understanding counseling responses. The video has a women's group counseling session and an adolsecent group session, The book has a script you can follow which helps to understand the responses of the counselors. The DVD offers shorter scenarios of group counseling that provide more examples of how to respond in different situations.
The book, video and DVD are easy to follow and understand. I highly recommend this book set to anyone who is a student of counseling or a beginning counselor.

Book Description
This work brings together the complete dance score of The Green Table -- one of the most famous ballets of the 20th century -- in Labanotation, along with music notation for the piano accompaniment and a complete recording of accompaniment on CD. It also includes several essays about the work and its genesis, and many production photographs. This book is an important item for all colleges with dance programs to own in their libraries and for scholars interested in the study of contemporary dance.
Customer Reviews:
Valuable to the professional, fascinating to the amateur.......2007-06-05
First, a disclaimer: My interest in this book is as a ballet-goer and amateur musician, so I have nothing to offer about the Labanotation. But I found the history of the ballet intriguing, and the rehearsal notes and photographs helped recapture memories of past performances. The rehearsal music consists of a piano solo reduction from the 2 pianos/4 hands performance score. Though I had been vaguely hoping to see the original score, the solo version certainly facilitates my playing the music for my own enjoyment. The CD recording of the solo score is well-played, but the instrument appears to be an out-of-tune upright set in the middle of a dance studio. Quite a disappointment. I'd have thought that a decent concert grand and passable sound engineering would have been considered essential - and not hard to come by - for this important project. But I realize this book is aimed at professionals in the field of dance, who would probably find my criticisms less germane to the intended purpose of the book.

Dance Improvisations
ASIN: 0677063652 |
Book Description
Your Move: A New Approach to the Study of Movement and Dance establishes a fresh and original framework for looking at dance. In examining the basic elements of dance - the Alphabet of Movement - and using illustrations of movement technique and notation symbols it provides a new way to see, to teach and to choreograph dance. This book gives a list of primary actions upon which all physical activity is based, focusing on both the functional and expressive sides of movement.
It draws upon the author's broad experience in ballet, modern and ethnic dance to reinterpret movement and to shed new light on the role of movement in dance. Your Move is an important book not only for dancers but also for instructors in sport and physical therapy. Each copy of Your Move comes complete with exercise sheets, which can also be purchased separately. A teacher's guide has also been designed providing notes on each chapter, approaches to the exploration of movement, interpretation of the reading studies, additional information of motif description and answers to the exercise sheets. An optional audio cassette, with music written and recorded especially for use with the book, is also available.

Book Description
THE COLLECTED HUTCH OWEN is at once hilarious and enraged, snotty, and smart. These acclaimed dregs-of-society farces skewer the multinational, mega-merging, corporate forces that control our lives. Tom Hart`s popular vagrant/rebel, Hutch Owen, rages while the world around him builds, merges, attends marketing seminars and goes IPO. The streets and alleyways that are his bedroom and study are now invisible beneath a coat of crude and insulting ads. His may be the only dissenting voice left! When the first tale, HUTCH OWEN'S WORKING HARD, was released in 1994, it created an underground sensation and gained Tom Hart a die-hard following. Here are the two previously published tales, with two brand new, full-length stories, never before seen. Feel the Power! Catch the Wave! Join the Splurge!!
Customer Reviews:
A lot of laughs, and a lot to think about........2001-10-10
I bought Hutch Owen expecting to laugh, not learn. But if a cartoon book about an anarchic vagrant can be funny, and educational, and touching, and a thousand other things, so much the better.
Hutch is a hard-working man, whose work just happens to be railing against the system and alerting the common man to the depradations of Big Business, embodied in the book by "Worner Products". (CEO Dennis Worner has some...odd....ideas, among them a line of Malcolm X clothing and paraphernalia and a bizarre soft drink, plus the "Punk Rock Car.....GET ANGRY FOR IT!!!!" I suspsct that some of these products would, in real life, be big sellers....)
Hutch tries to impart gentle lessons in humanity to people, and I found his friendship with a little boy, and their quest to build a "Hideout" from the rest of the world to be particularly touching. The 3rd story in the 4 story book is a flat-out gutbuster, as Hutch is forced to get a job (gasp...) for the stock-market. The way he innocently plays all of the idiotic traders for fools, and casually manipulates the market, is hilarious.
In the end, we would all be better off if we really had a Hutch Owen......
