Written for children.......2001-11-25
Robert Clouse was certainly trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator when he wrote this piece of garbage. What a shame that such an important story should be given such a hack job.
It is valuable for the behind the scenes information and the great photographs. It is a story that needed to be told. It is valuable as a history, but nearly every sentence that Clouse penned is an insult to your intelligence.
I do recommend buying this book, however. Hopefully one day, Mr. Clouse will write the same story, except for grownups, and this sloppy, rushed, middle school kid version will be forgotten.
The thoughts of Bruce and the frustrations of Hollywood.......2001-01-01
Bruce Lee fans or cinematic enthusiasts will find this book interesting. There is not much depth of the insight into Bruce, however, when Robert Clouse provides it, it's quite revealing. Examples include Bruce's method of developing his concentration skills and how he practiced for a possible fight against Mohammed Ali.
Most of the book is about the hurdles Clouse overcame producing the movie. Considering the obstacles he had, which included the budget, lighting, props, gang fights, and challenges toward Bruce, etc., he and Bruce did a remarkable job. The book is full of photographs, however there aren't any great pictures of Bruce that you probably haven't already seen.
Ted Weimann, author of Warrior Speed.

Shag: Art of Josh Agle
ASIN: 081185096X |
Book Description
This is the first major monograph of one of today's most popular and widely regarded artists, Josh Agle more commonly known as Shag. His trademark style is spotted on everything from cocktail napkins and cigarette lighters to his brand identity work for the new Pink Panther film. But Shag is the first opportunity to appreciate the mastery of expression in this artist's primary output his paintings. Gathered together here are nearly 200 wry and colorful scenes of signature retro decadence. Wasp-waisted women in Capri pants and turtlenecked, eye-patched men of mystery host parties where deathly specters cavort with cranky wolves, regal bulls, and blas Adams and Eves sipping martinis. A Shag painting often takes place in the middle of a story whose conclusion could be hilarious, catastrophic, or both, creating a world of endless hinted narratives. Lowbrow gallerist Billy Shire and art critic Colin Berry offer keen essays that situate Shag in the artistic and cultural setting that has spurred him beyond the more predictable work of his contemporaries creating a book that is simultaneously a fantasy playground of crisp lines and sharp colors, and a serious look at one of our most up-and-coming painters.

This is cooool as.......2007-01-31
This is a cool coffee table book, if only I had the money to buy a print! Its great for colour design reference and styles for 50's drawing.
Shag, The Art Of Josh Agle.......2006-02-24
I think this book is a great collection of Josh Agle's retro modern artwork. I also enjoyed the foreword by Billy Shire and essay by Colin Berry, in regards to information on the artist himself. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves bright retro style artwork that doesn't take itself too seriously.
The hippest art book around..........2006-01-29
My husband and I are big fans of Shag's work. I bought this book for him for his birthday and he loves it. The layout is every bit as cool as you would expect and the pictures are brilliant- crisp and saturated with color. A must have for any fan.
Shag-Art Book.......2006-01-15
If you are a fan of shag's art work such as I am this is a great book to display on your coffee table. The only regret that I have is that I wasn't able to purchase the limited edition copy of this book. Amazon had the best deal on the book I purchased by far.
Great book!.......2005-09-27
The is the 2nd "Art of SHAG"-book. This book contains about 200 JoSH AGle-paintings. If you liked the LAST GASP-book "BOTTOMLESS COCKTAIL/The Art of SHAG" you'll definitely like this one. One crit: This book has 224 pages, so what I'd have liked to have included in a book this thick would be more info on him and sketches by the artist (e.g. like in a JUXTAPOZ-issue where his way of working was displayed. Anyway, nice book, of course a must-have for any SHAG-fan...
Book Description
Fine Art Limited Editions, A Catalogue Raisonn, presents the complete prints and posters of Josh Agle, a.k.a. Shag, the Californiabased artist whose bold, bright, irreverent takes on the swingin' styles and of jetsetters, cocktaillounge crawlers, scenestealing supervillains and (literal) party animals have made him one of the most popular painters working today. Shag's paintings have seen heavy demand and rising prices, so Agle turned to high quality limitededition prints beginning in 1999. Collected here for the first time, these 175 prints document the evolution of color, content and composition in Shag's work with illustrated essays. Chronologically arranged and annotated with information on size, print run and date of publishing, straight from the artist's own archives, here are Shag's long soldout limited edition serigraphs, offset lithos and etchings.

Book Description
For almost a decade, the radical art group Flame Rite has been producing Zippo lighters featuring the work of prominent comic artists. These "miniature billboards" that normally display a corporate logo have been reinvented as witty pop-art confections. Charles Burns's ominous Smoking Skull, Daniel Clowes's creepy-comic Eightball, Big Daddy Roth's wacky Rat Fink, the fabulous retroisms of Niagara's All Girls Are Bad and Shag's Ooguh Booguh all these and more (130 total) are on lurid display. The book includes the work of more than 30 prominent artists including R. Crumb, Daniel Clowes, and Shag, exclusive, previously unpublished art from 20 artists in the Flame Rite lineup, and every "metal canvas" that Flame Rite Zippo produced, featuring rare and out-of-print models.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT coffee table book........2003-08-17
This book is beautifully produced, and contains a lot of great information. It's been the starter of many a conversation an discussion of all manner of topics.
Tiki Fans Rejoice!.......2003-03-22
A comprehensive and enjoyable read. Spectacular visuals, ranging from a pictorial history to pure fun. A must-have for anyone interested in tiki culture.
Art Fun: Tiki Facts & Lore.......2002-10-16
A good read and a great look! Wonderful photos of the "real" tikis as well as contemporary re-incarnations in sculpture of Schmaltz and popular paintings by Shag. In a refreshingly non-academic style, the short readable essays offer lots of facts about the lovable, fascinating tiki icon past and present.
For the die-hard tiki fan.......2002-08-18
If you're a die-hard fan of tiki culture and art, this book will make a nice addition to your collection, but I've seen better. The book was filled with a LOT of photos of ethnic carvings... many of them not too tiki-like in nature. The back of the book, however, has several terrific, whimsical Shag art prints, so that makes it worth a look.
Dawn of Magic.......2002-01-04
Night of the Tiki will enlighten you to all the sensorial beauty, mystery, and majesty of this
ancient art form. It will also show you the Tiki's place in current culture and its influence of
various art genres. The book tells this tale with beautiful photography and poetic
words.
It is a purely entertaining, enjoyable read into the privative world of tribal art that still has a
place in toady's world.
Book Description
For impulsive Aries, dancing on the table in a Vegas lounge, or intuitive Pisces, who are all about the vibe, this is the perfect way to play "What's your sign?" without losing that hipster edge. The book features 12 new paintings by Shag — beatnik chicks, cool dudes, and other typical denizens of Shag's retro world — each based on a zodiac sign and printed on a two-page spread, along with two to four pages of witty text and artwork.
Customer Reviews:
Cute Little Book!.......2007-01-09
This is a fun little book! The Josh Agle art is great!
Book Description
Blending cartoon, tiki aesthetic, and vintage illustration, Shag creates art that looks back on mid-20th-century culture, adding modern irony, humor, and joy. Retro on the surface, this art is a loving, fanciful paean to pop culture and consciousness. Carefully designed and incorporating Shag's best work, Art of Shag provides a well-balanced overview of this popular artist.
Customer Reviews:
Shag milestone.......2006-03-14
This book is a great resource for cataloging the career of Shag. A new book is out by Billy Shire that delves deeper but this book was first and draws a significant line in the sand.
I have followed Shag's career from before it was a fine art career and continue to follow it (see the catalogs from the shows I curated featuring Shag pieces: Tiki Art Now! and Tiki Art Two) and I think this book is a great starting point for all new Shag fans as well as a must have for serious, longstanding Shag fans.

Breakthrough Illustrator SHAG!!.......2005-04-05
Of course, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit envious of how this illustrator creates such great masterpieces. Shag, aka Josh Agle, has perplexed the minds of many who often wonder how such simplistic paintings attract such a devoted fanbase. Stars such as Whoopi Goldberg have collected his work, making simple prints skyrocket to unobtainable prices. This book showcases some of Shag's work, and the pictures are of the highest quality.
Having had the pleasure of actually meeting Shag at an art gallery in Long Beach, I've noticed that he bears a startling resemblance to the men he includes in his paintings. Although it was not his attention to do so, I thought it was rather interesting.
Certainly a good picture book for anyone seeking a minute library of his vast works, Shag is definetely not an artist to be imitated.
Dissapointing.......2004-11-09
From the cover and title this book promises more than it offers, it was hardly the karmasutra we expected, nor was it an insightful and USEFUL travel guide to the beautiful ad unspoilt regions of 'Shag Rocks' (yes it does exsist we know we've been there.....many times).
so in conclusion....this was the most dissapointing shag we've ever had!!!!
love ros and rach (age 13 1/2)
wonderviews.......2003-07-15
The delightful work represented by Shag is such a crowd pleaser, appealing to the avant garde and yuppies alike. His anthropomorphic playfulness and detail for amusement, absurdity and child-like wonderment are addictive.
Tons of fun in this book!
An homage to 50's lounge culture with an ironic wink.......2002-07-26
JoSH AGle (Shag) is one of the preeminent artists in the southern California "lowbrow" art scene who masterfully combines the iconography of the Jetsons, James Bond, Disney, tiki, and 50's Vegas. The artwork in "Bottomless Cocktails" illustrates why there is always a waiting list of people willing to pay [very high prices] for a Shag original, and why his serigraphs seem to double in price every few months.
Simple and geometric in composition, offering a limited palette, often as little as four colors, and a flattened perspective, Shag's paintings combine zombie jazz bands, beatnik chicks, and red devils in lounge attire. If you're looking for inspiration for decorating your tiki bar, or you're nostalgic for Saturday Mornings past, look no further. This is the book for you.

Shag is known as the master of `50s-style graphic art, but with Shag's Jive Journal, the Rembrandt of Retro lets the reader do the creating. His instantly recognizable, angular characters are scattered throughout in spot-art form, but this journaling book is designed to help readers become writers, or even artists. Book Description
In the sixties, as the nation anticipated the conquest of space, the defeat of poverty, and an end to injustice at home and abroad, no goal seemed beyond America’s reach.
Then the seventies arrived—bringing oil shocks and gas lines, the disgrace and resignation of a president, defeat in Vietnam, terrorism at the 1972 Munich Olympics, urban squalor, bizarre crimes, high prices, and a bad economy. The country fell into a great funk.
But when things fall apart, you can take the fragments and make something fresh. Avocado kitchens and Earth Shoes may have been ugly, but they signaled new modes of seeing and being. The first generation to see Earth from space found ways to make life’s everyday routines—eating, keeping warm, taking out the trash—meaningful, both personally and globally. And many decided to reinvent themselves.
In Populuxe, a “textbook of consumerism in the Push Button Age” (Alan J. Adler, Los Angeles Times), Thomas Hine scrutinized the looks and life of the 1950s and 1960s, revealing the hopes and fears expressed in that era’s design. In the same way, The Great Funk: Falling Apart and Coming Together (on a Shag Rug) in the Seventies maps a complex era by looking at its ideas, feelings, sex, fashions, textures, gestures, colors, demographic forces, artistic expressions, and other phenomena that shaped our lives. Hine gets into the shoes and heads of those who experienced the seventies—exploring their homes, feeling the beat of their music, and scanning the ads that incited their desires.
But The Great Funk is more than a lavish catalogue of seventies culture: it’s a smart, informed, lively look at the “Me decade” through the eyes of the man House & Garden called “America’s sharpest design critic.”
