Read how a Master does it!.......2001-04-12
Ken Russell is one of the best directors of our century, and it's a joy to read about his craft. A must read for film buffs or students of the art.
Book Description
A biography of director Ken Russell that details the wild ideas, surreal moments, personal faith, and cavalcade of colorful personalities surrounding this eccentric filmmaker—on and off the set. Best known for the acclaimed movies Altered States, The Devils, Gothic, The Music Lovers, Tommy, and Women in Love, Russell redefined cinema in the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, working with magnetic actors such as Jack Nicholson, Michael Caine, Ann-Margret, William Hurt, Gabriel Byrne, Vanessa Redgrave, and Glenda Jackson, who won a Best Actress Oscar for her role in Women in Love. Russell’s imagery, dialogue, and erotic metaphors are both outrageous and thought provoking, and he has explored the lives and works of such literary and musical luminaries as Claude Debussy, D.H. Lawrence, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Mary Shelley, Gustav Mahler, and Oscar Wilde. This intimate biography ranges over Russell’s entire life and career and highlights how creative differences stopped production of a movie version of Evita, how he grappled with censors and got accused of blasphemy for his adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s The Devils, how he creatively staged the love duet between Faust and Helen over a bowl of pasta in the opera Mephistopheles, and how Alan Bates and Oliver Reed compared their penis sizes before diving into Women in Love’s nude wrestling scene.

The Best Film Maker You've Never Seen.......2000-06-03
Memoirs are probably the riskiest of publishing ventures - if the writer is not at the top of the Fame A-List, or, if famous, insufficiently scandalous, no one, except the aficionado, will buy them, much less read them. Once upon a time, director Ken Russell was famous AND scandalous...once upon a time. And it's a shame that he seems to be forgotten, considering that he gave us some of the most provocative, surreal, dynamic, and controversial films of the period from 1969 to 1980. He was one of the few true artists in the commercial cinema of the period, in the sense of having a vision, of taking his raw material and expressing his own unique interpretation. (He stills works occasionally, but his heyday has passed) Many would say he was self-indulgent - and I have to grant that he is an acquired taste. But there was no one else like him. This memoir, named after his best film (and one of the best science fiction films ever made) grew out of a commission from the BBC in his native Britain for an autobiographical film. While researching locations for the film, Russell slips into an examination of his life, experiences, and career. Like his films, his life itself has had its moments of high art and low comedy, pratfalls and epiphanies, campiness, hallucination, love, and tragedy. Inside looks at the film industry and show biz gossip abound, of course, but there is also the very moving account of the accidental death of his favorite cousin, Marion. It is also, often, very funny. Russell seems to attract odd experiences and people, which may explain the skewed tenor of his films. It's not a great memoir, by any means. Having reread it recently, I found a bit meandering and unfocused, and some of his opinions decidedly un-PC. Still, for those curious about what makes a film director tick, the cinema of the Seventies, or mavericks bucking the mainstream, it is definitely worth a read. For readers who are already familiar with the author's works, the rating goes up another star.

The Ultimate Book on Ken Russell to Date.......2000-03-09
Of the numerous books on British filmmaker Ken Russell, Ken Hanke's KEN RUSSELL'S FILMS is by far the best and easily the most perceptive. Hanke really gets to the heart of Russell's work, bringing the film's themes and technical accomplishments into sharp focus. Russell himself has endorsed the book for its take on his work and what higher recommendation can there be? I can't wait for this finally promised updated and revised version!
The best book yet on Russell.......1999-04-14
Hanke's 15 year old study remains the best examination of the director Ken Russell. Hanke sees Russell as an optimistic film maker who delivers his stories with stunning immmediacy. Russell has completed over 25 tele- and feature films since the early 80s. One hopes that Hanke plans a sequel covering Russell's work of recent "vintage."

It includes photos depicting scenes and characters from the movie, as well as candid shots of many behind-the-scenes people.
Featuring original art from the movie, an introduction by Sir George Martin (The Beatles' producer) and a foreword by Erich Segal (scriptwriter of the movie), this amazing book is for any fan of The Beatles' music, movies or animation.
Dr. Robert Hieronimus, a noted Beatles fan and historian, is the authority on Yellow Submarine.
Includes many colorful slides depicting scenes and characters from the movie

Customer Reviews:
Whew!!!.......2004-11-14
I'm a Beatle fan from way back. Love them, will forever! As such, I buy every book about them, I have for years! A couple of years ago, this Hieronimus non-book came out. What a DISSAPOINTMENT!!! So BORING! Over and over again... the same info. It was like the author, Hieronimus (Bosch?) was some kind of street reporter, getting reactions from people who wanted to do nothing but sing their own praises. What a BORE! I couldn't believe such a trashy book would in any way start to explain how such a classic picture came to be, and it certainly didn't!
And then to top it all, something I've never seen before in a book, advertising in the last pages!! The entire book is a study in bad taste, and that muddy cover which is hard to believe was done by Heinz Edelman.
But there is good news!!! Last spring, another book came out on the Making of the Yellow Submarine. It's called UP PERISCOPE YELLOW by Al Brodax and it's just FANTASTIC!!! For one thing it's AUTHENTIC, written by the producer who was there, and knew the Beatles for a long time, he also produced their TV cartoons. It's clear that the wonderful stories he tells in his book (Al Brodax) came out of the close relationship he had with the Beatles. There are pictures in the book of Brodax and Segal working on the script, (Brodax was one of the co-writers) with Ringo playing the piano for him and Eric, with Brodax arguing with Paul about the script, etc... He knew them well. UP PERISCOPE YELLOW-WHAT A READ.
Finding, and Reuniting Officers and Crew of The Musical Sub.......2004-10-10
"Inside the Yellow Submarine" is a marvelous compendium of first person interviews with the Sub's chief creative officers.
Anyone interested in learning about the design and creation of the Yellow Submarine, as well as the adventure we the crew had in the Sub's construction, is well advised to buy Dr. Bob's intricate and dedicated chronicle.
As Dr. Bob has mentioned, the untold story behind this unique motion picture intrigued him, as it has many of YS's fans for decades.
During those decades I firmly believed somewhere, someday, someone with the necessary energy, determination, organizational powers, breadth of insight and boundless curiosity would investigate the entire 'back story'.
This is Dr. Bob's first volume about a voluminous subject, and what he has achieved here is a hurculean work in unearthing the answers to many 'lost' mysteries about the film's genesis.
This seminal book has served not only to open dialog and solve many mysteries about Yellow Submarine, but it has happily led to locating and reuniting many of we crew members.
Following our completing production, we all dispersed across the globe, many going on to launch our own animation studios and animation training schools.
The tremendously original creative splash Yellow Submarine made at the time (1968), sent out such graphic tsunami waves worldwide, it influenced pop art culture itself; resonating undercurrents and surface highlights from YS are discernible in today's digital animation productions.
YS was a trailblazer opening new graphic directions for mainstream animation entertainment, just as the Beatles did musically.
Dr. Bob's book is far more than an excellent collection of remarkable first-person interviews, it sheds much needed light on many facets of the creative genius and innovative spirit involved in the film's creation, by a team of artists who, in the words of the late director, George Dunning, "Were brought together from all over the world and who seemed to be at a peak in their creative powers". (Chuck Jones/PBS 1980's memorium to George Dunning).
If you're at all interested in animation, its history, trends and processes--and particularly if you've wondered about the creative people involved in it's construction and launching, this book (and hopefully subsequent volumes yet to come!) is a 'Must Have' for your reference shelf; be it innovative animation or inspiring creativity.
Addendum:
Apparently YS has found an entirely new audience today among children. A creation of the '60's consciousness and regarded somewhat askance by the so-called 'Establishment', with secondary references and meanings ascribed to it (like 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Alice in Wonderland'); today it's being enjoyed as what it essentially is: a bright, colorful, musical fairy tale with hilariously funny villains, and a happy ending.
Like a communal diary from the Yellow Sub.......2003-07-10
I've always been curious about this film and what the people were like who were behind the curtain. It's been well documented elsewhere that The Beatles didn't make this film, but I never read much about this crazy group of artists in the swinging London of the 1960s who did. Finally, in this book, we get to hear what these creative people thought about while they developed the revolutionary ideas that went into this film. And unlike many other authors of Beatles-related books, who tend to focus on the glamour of The Beatles' personalities instead of the work itself, Dr. Bob Hieronimus does not skimp with the quotes from my new heroes, the struggling artists who brought Yellow Sub from concept to screen. The book reads like a communal diary from all the participants. The absorbing style is largely comprised of first-hand accounts from the film's creators, organized in such a clever way, with just enough commentary between, to allow readers to reach their own conclusions of who among the film's creators were Blue Meanies and who were Pepperlanders. I, for one, wouldn't want to miss one word of them. It's about time they had a chance to tell their own story and be given a stage to do so.
This author needed an editor...badly.......2003-04-23
"Yellow Submarine", in its day, was a remarkable achievement in animation. While not exactly a Beatles movie, more inspired by their songs than anything truly related, it spun a lovely fairy-tale and used the spirit of the group members as heroes. More than 30 years after its release, the story of how it was made remained fascinating to fans of classic animation.
So it was with some disappointment that I slogged through this book. The author has certainly done his homework. He's turned over every remaining stone and then some, found virtually all living participants, documented every step of the way to the screen for this story. And he's turned the story of one of the most imaginative movies of the 60s into the dullest book on the planet.
It's not that what he has researched isn't in itself interesting. It's just that he can't tell what's real important information and what isn't. It seems like he collected masses of information and interviews, typed it all up on 3x5 cards and simply pasted it together into a book. Minutiae are treated as revelation; no detail is too minor to be included, and repeated. Redundancies abound; he has three participants telling the same story, one after the other, with little new between them. He repeats similar items 4 chapters beyond the first mention. Order and organization? Hardly. It just goes on and on and on.
I can't fault the material that he's come up with, and in fact I applaud it. But what this author desperately needed was an editor, someone to assist him in crystallizing the material into a narrative that best told the tale of the creation of this landmark film. Instead, this "author" has simply assembled his notes into a word processor, and left it to the reader to sort it out. That's not scholarship - that's clerical.
Nonetheless, it's all that's out there and the information throughout is valuable. If you've got the patience to sit through it.
A surprising page turner!.......2002-06-05
With INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE, Dr. Robert Hieronimus has fashioned a captivating adventure that will appeal to far more than just Beatles completists or animation fans. I was thrilled at the inclusion of many, many pre-film design sketches, which I'm pretty sure have never been seen anywhere else before! As for the other reviewer on this site complaining about the color section, I read an interview with the author in a UK publication called "Record Collector" saying Apple did not want him to use any previously unpublished artwork, for reasons of their own. Maybe we will see an official coffee-table style "picture book" from them in the future! If so, there's still no way any other book will ever come close to containing the extraordinary detail that Hieronimus has compiled into INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE. This book does not suffer in the least from a lack of illustrations. There is one on almost every page and they are all large and well reproduced. I for one was very pleased to learn who the faces were behind this film, and thanks to the extraordinary effort of Dr. Robert Hieronimus, they are no longer anonymous!
Book Description
Al Brodax was the producer and co-author of the ground-breaking animation, Yellow Submarine. In this book he recalls a frenzied, madcap escapade that came to be reflected in an enduring piece of screen history. In addition to Al and The Beatles, the "cast" included more than a dozen animators, platoons of inkers, background artists, soundmen, cameramen, and various essential expediters. They produced, aside from the film, more than a dozen pregnancies and one or two marriages. This generously illustrated book is a special gift to fans of the Beatles, of Yellow Submarine and of spirited, flavorful writing about movies.
Customer Reviews:
It's a real nowhere book..........2006-07-09
My biggest problem with this book, is how much has been written in quotes. Conversations are spilled out in dialog that doesn't even begin to read like it actually happened - but the quotes lead you to believe it has been transcribed accurately from history, eather than the memory of a 78 year-old from events that occured many years ago. I can understand adding narrative, and even taking some liberties to make it interesting, but it reads so blatantly like it never happened. Especially the conversations with John. I can't even begin to believe for a second that it went down anything even remotely like what is laid out in this book. Which frankly, taints everything I'm reading - it all seems like propaganda, fiction, SCIENCE fiction.
Yes, I suppose there's some enlightening information in here too, scattered among the storyline, and the questionable recollection, but not nearly enough to make this book worth buying. And the amount of pictures, photos, sketches, etc. is almost non-existant. This book doesn't tell history, it's trying to create history. If you can get it for free, than sure, get it - put it on your shelf next to your other Beatle books. But if you're looking to walk away with something new, without leaving a bad taste in your mouth, I'd pass.
book offers valuable insight to motion picture.......2005-01-02
I think it is worthwhile to read both books published to date about the motion picture "Yellow Submarine". The other book available reflects highly detailed documentation and interviews with numerous people who worked on the production of the movie. This book, in contrast, offers the firsthand recollections of the movie's executive producer and his staff, the people who got the ball rolling for this movie in the first place. I think there is some value in reading a book like this, written from the viewpoint of recollections more so than research and documentation. The author's personal recollections, right or wrong, even with some apparent chronological flaws, offer an interesting insight which makes for worthwhile reading.
"Yellow Submarine", the motion picture, was, I think, a psychedelic masterpiece, made at a time when the animation business as a whole was at the end of its Silver Age. It represents the Beatles brilliantly. Some people did not think highly of it SIMPLY BECAUSE IT WAS A CARTOON, which reflects a disappointing viewpoint that has always existed toward animation as an art form. I thought Beatles fans were smarter than that but some weren't. It is therefore most welcome now to see these fine books about this motion picture along with the superb DVD release of the movie itself.
Review by Yellow Submarine Animator, Norman Drew.......2004-10-29
If you're curious about the genesis of the movie Yellow Submarine you're well advised to buy both UP PERISCOPE YELLOW and INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE.
If you've read other reviews here, you'll know UP PERISCOPE YELLOW is a first person account by the producer, Al Brodax; and INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE (see my review of this excellent book also) by Dr. Bob Hieronumus, Ph.D., is an anthology of keen insight and probing interviews with a number of core artists whose creative genius built and sailed the Sub into our Collective Consciousness forever.
Each book is written from a different perspective. Until more volumes from Al and Dr. Bob (and even we the crew) are forthcoming, these two vital books will serve as comprehensive 'bookends' for your Yellow Submarine reference shelf.
UP PERSICOPE YELLOW recaptures those wild, zany, chaotic, heart-racing days of creative frenzy during the Sub's construction. Moreover, Al Brodax's account begins BEFORE the Sub was even a yellow and orange gleam in any of the crew's eyes. As well as providing a fascinating and hilarious back story of what led to the concept of the movie itself, he accompanies you through the whole process of production from the producer's perspective.
Whether your cinematic interest is animation or live action, this lightning narrative zaps you through high-flying moves, fancy footwork and the 'thinking on your feet' involved in producing a unique feature film; from initial concept to the megastress of rights negotiation, sales, budgets, deadlines, navigating minefields of egos; and out of the chaos, delivering a finished film--even to tweaking the projector controls at the Grand Premiere, with an additionally hilarious account of how to 'imprint' a missing copyright notice on the film emulsion when it's in the projector ready to roll! (You have to read the book to find this one!)
Al's swashbuckling talent with hyperbole lends a 'you are there' breathless excitement and zany hilarity to his recapturing of those 'London '60's Days' on Yellow Submarine.
The book shows a sensitive side, revealing his personal angst, agonies, ecstasies and sorrow involved during the film's production (tragic, early death of a vital and cherished work associate). This will surprise many who believe the stereotype of flinty, unfeeling, humorless producers. Brodax shares his full emotions in this book.
As an aside, we crew were very cramped for desk space at TVC. Fellow animator Tom Halley and I were stationed at animation desks in a small office, which contained a third desk (with phone) that was 'time-shared' by Al Brodax, Abe Goodman and various TVC management personnel. It was a unique perspective as a humble Y.Sub. deckhand-animator,(think: Jack Lemmon's Ensign Pulver in the movie, 'Mister Roberts') occupying a desk beside the officers on the bridge, trying to block out the chaos and concentrate on drawing. It was also a great place to observe firsthand what was involved minute by minute, day by day in the management and production of a classic film. This book gets you even closer, on a wider, 'before, during and after production' timeline.
Another aspect of being a fly at the animation desk on the ceiling syndrome: next door to our small office was an anteroom-more like a broom cupboard, where Jack Stokes and Bob Balser assembled their storyboards, running the sound track with 'workprint' film on a Movieola (editing machine) forward and backward for weeks on end. By the end of production we knew most of the songs forward and backward.
And, by the end of this excellent first-person account by the producer of Yellow Submarine, you'll know what's involved in a production, which itself seemed to be going forward and backward--at the same time--with all the hair-pulling and gnashing of teeth that involved.
A great cinema history book by LIMELIGHT PUBLISHERS; a great write by AL BRODAX; a great read for YOU.
Stormy Seas.......2004-09-13
With the recent DVD release of the renovated and digitally remastered Beatles' animated epic YELLOW SUBMARINE, a whole new generation has come to discover the delights of this 1960's flower power masterpiece. And with the legendary "Hey Bulldog" sequence - deleted from all but the original British prints - reinstated in all its bizarre glory, Beatles fans can at last experience the full version of this psychedelic animated odyssey as it was originally meant to be seen.
As one of the animators on YELLOW SUBMARINE, I would say that the year I spent working on the film was perhaps the single most exciting period of my nearly 50 year career in the animation business; made even more memorable by the fact that I became engaged during production to Diana, my wife of 35 years, who worked on the "LUCY IN THE SKY WITH DIAMONDS" sequence .
And now, over 30 years after the film was first released, two new books (INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE and UP PERISCOPE YELLOW) have been published; each describing for the first time the whole astonishing behind-the-scenes story of how the film was made. The struggle to produce anything resembling a final script while production surged inexorably on past the writers towards an impossible deadline, the creative arguments, the personality clashes, the budgetary nightmares, the physical kidnapping of the film - with the whole thing being propelled by the sheer exhilaration of knowing that we were all taking part in an astonishing revolution in animated films - all these elements are well recounted in both books.
Whilst INSIDE THE YELLOW SUBMARINE tells the story of the production from the point of view of the directors and the creative team, Al Brodax's new book, UP PERISCOPE YELLOW tells it from the producer's perspective. As might be expected, the accounts differ markedly. Conflict between movie directors and producers is as old as Hollywood itself, but its roots go far back past the Renaissance, when artists and their patrons continually argued over differing visions of art and its monetary worth. Animating frantically below decks, the artists on YELLOW SUBMARINE were seldom party to the ongoing dramas up on the bridge; but our favourite pub, the nearby Dog and Duck, was an extremely efficient rumour mill. All of us were well aware that the odyssey of the YELLOW SUBMARINE, thrilling though it was, was by no means smooth sailing!
It is rare that the story of the making of a film as ground-breaking as YELLOW SUBMARINE has been told from the point of view of both the directors and the producer, so we are extremely fortunate that each side has now published its memoirs - even if it is more than three decades after the event! Al Brodax's UP PERISCOPE YELLOW is exceptionally well written, telling his version in a fast-moving, stream-of-consciousness style which vividly portrays the producer's role as the meat in the sandwich between the hard-nosed studio deal-makers and the creative spirits of the film industry. My main criticism is that it could have been improved with more pictures and, most important of all, an index.
The debate about who said what and who did what on YELLOW SUBMARINE seems set to continue for quite some time. But there is one undeniable fact in all of this - if Al Brodax hadn't stuck his neck out as producer and taken a chance on producing an animated feature all those years ago, the phenomenon that was the YELLOW SUBMARINE would never have set sail on its fantastic voyage. For that we all owe him a vote of thanks.
great book.......2004-09-05
This writer is a Beatles fan. As can be seen by the conflicting reviews of this book the tumultuous production of The Yellow Submarine has left some of the participants still spinning with indignation.
This, after more than 35 years have passed.
Further, it is absurd that artists and writers who helped create that film, talents who surely have long since moved on in life, should be organized into a group of indignant reviewers who do not substantiate their complaints nor lay out their various views individually and specifically. What criticism they do submit, en masse, doesn't rise above the trivial and petulant, suggesting emotion might be at work more than substance. To substantiate claims of lying, the critics simply offer contrary views, alternate memories, and even hearsay. All of this appears to have begun from a critical revue written here by a Robert Hieronimus, who has himself written a book on the same subject (is this temerity or merely self-serving?), a book that includes many quotes from the very people who are now writing further criticisms of Brodax's book here on Amazon.com, as if there is a campaign being conducted, a kind of vendetta, an ugly ganging up. To what end? As a Beatles fan I ask who cares if two people have three opinions on how Fred came to be created? I want to hear all the stories, all the memories. The artist has his view, the writer his, the producer his, and God Hers. What's new?
Up Periscope Yellow is a good book, a personal view of what went down during the making of a flawed but classic film, a film, were I not a Beatles fan, I would even call amateurish: clever in places, crude and inept in other places - far below the quality of contemporary Disney films they so cleverly mocked putting Mickey Mouse hats on the Blue Meanies.
But I love the Beatles and the film is therefore incomparable.
It's said that the cemetery is full of indispensable men, but The Yellow Submarine had five indispensable men, one was obviously Al Brodax, the other four are equally obvious. It can also be said that without those five, nobody would be giving The Yellow Submarine a second viewing - let alone calling it a classic. Up Periscope Yellow gives the view from the perspective of the one indispensable man among the many talents actually making that film, especially interesting for its `inside baseball' view, full of wonderful anecdotes and overflowing with sub plots.
Beatles fans are only enriched by reading it.

Beatles Take Over Fourth Grade Classroom!.......2007-03-24
My son's elementary school hosts "reading day" once a year, honoring Dr. Seuss' birthday. I attended his fourth-grade class today with this book, hoping my love for "Yellow Submarine" was all I'd need to bring film, song, and Beatle wit to kids I'd wondered even knew the group's name.
"How many here have heard of the Beatles?" I started innocently enough. Almost all the kids raised their hands, a good start. (This included my 9-year-old who, with his teenage sister, I've inoculated with their music since singing "I Feel Fine" to them as babies.). "And how many have heard the song `Yellow Submarine'?" "And how many have seen the film?" I asked to fewer and fewer raised hands.
I then introduced and read this story, faithfully summarizing Al Brodax and Erich "Love Story" Segal's whimsical, pun-filled screenplay. I could only approximate amusing British accents (especially "Nowhere Man" Jeremy and the old Mayor) and slowly emphasize John and Ringo's clever puns ("I know Frankenstein. I used to date his sister, Phyllis.") Even casual Beatles fan can hear the film's beloved soundtrack in its pages. But "Yellow Submarine"'s eye-popping psychedelic art, happy ending (the Blue Meanies are flowered, then reformed) and faithfulness to the Beatles' personalities kept this story fresh to children whose parents may not have born in 1968 when it was released.
I reached the last page and its line, "Love is All You Need." The kids applauded, my son's teacher, who smiled at points through my reading, said, "I think I enjoyed it more than they did." My son raised his hand and said "Dad, I heard a lot of Beatles song titles through the book - "Ticket to Ride," "Help," "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band..."
I left happy, knowing I'd successfully shared something I loved with my son and his classmates and proved it timeless. The Beatles, with a top selling CD and sold-out Cirque du Soleil show, are again in renaissance and hardly need more promotion. But "Yellow Submarine," in all its incarnations, recalls the innocence and fun the Beatles' music and personalities continue to bring yet another generation. Highly recommended for fans of the film and group.
Love it!.......2005-12-13
I'd suggest watching the movie first if you want to get the full "Yellow Submarine" experience.
However, this book is the perfect gift for any Yellow Submarine fan. It's the perfect thing to bring up those fond memories of the movie. :)
THE BEATLES IN WONDERLAND.......2005-11-22
From a 1966 album track to a hit single to a cartoon, this has a life of its own nowadays.Leading to "Octopus'Garden" then to the film "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" which took the same theme, there's been an album which combined George Martin's incidental music,a recent reissue as the "Yellow Submarine Songtrack" which added more songs in place of the Martin music and there's a DVD of the cartoon plus one about the Making Of.
In Liverpool is the lifesize Yellow Submarine constructed at Cammell Lairds shipyard and no end of merchandizing.
Not bad for a film which only starred the Beatles for 2 minutes!
Not only for children........2005-06-21
This book is like a dose of calm and warm when you read it. If you love the film you're going to love the book either. You can read it to your kids when they want to hear a strange but beautiful story before bed time. The drawings and the story are fantastic. The only problem is that you will never know how Ringo pushed the panic button.
Great for the Kids.......2004-09-10
My two kids are huge Yellow Submarine fans, so this book was a natural fit. The artwork is taken directly from the film, with some slight modifications. The storyline, however, leaves out all of the songs - which in my opinion undercuts some of the story's charm. Gone too are many of the illustrations which accompanied the songs. As a result, you really only get a partial visual retelling.
As a historical comment, since the Beatles has very little to do with the actual movie other than licensing their songs and performing in an awkward two minute appearance in the end of the film, the absence of their music in a book on the subject is both unfortunate and fitting. The absence of much of the film's breathtaking artwork, on the other hand, is inexcusable.
That being said, the actual writing is quite clever. The text does its best to weave in Beatle's song titles into the prose - I suppose as a way of giving some sort of nod to the music which inspired the movie.
The reason I gave it 4 stars is that, despite my nitpickiness, my kids love the book. And if they like it, I'm a happy dad.
