Book Description

The Burning Legion has been defeated, and eastern regions of Kalimdor are now shared by two nations: the orcs of Durotar, led by their noble Warchief, Thrall; and the humans of Theramore, led by one of the most powerful mages alive -- Lady Jaina Proudmoore.

But the tentative peace between orcs and humans is suddenly crumbling. Random attacks against Durotar's holdings suggest that the humans have renewed their aggression toward the orcs. Now Jaina and Thrall must avert disaster before old hatreds are rekindled -- and Kalimdor is plunged into another devastating war.

Jaina's search to uncover the truth behind the attacks leads her to a shocking revelation. Her encounter with a legendary, long-lost wizard will challenge everything that she believes and illuminate the secret history of the world of...

5 out of 5 stars World of Warcraft: Cycle of Hatred.......2007-09-17

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was an easy read, with a good plot. If you are looking for a book with a lot of World of Warcraft history, you won't find it in this book. What you will find is a good fantasy story set in the World of Warcraft universe involving "big name" characters.

4 out of 5 stars Good History.......2007-08-09

Excellent history of the Warcraft world and why things are the way they are, especially the relationship between Orcs, Humans and Draenei

2 out of 5 stars Only for the most die hard WOW fan.......2007-08-02

This is without a doubt, the worst warcraft novel ever written. I have read and own all the warcraft novels ( and the manga as well), and for the most part they are well done and greatly add to the richness of the Warcraft universe.
The plot is flat, easily guessed in advance and reveals no new lore. The characters are stale, and worst and most unforgivable of all, the staple characters in the novel don't act at all as they should. I wonder if DeCandido did any research at all before writing. He makes Jaina look stupid and severely downplays her power as a wizard, while increasing her importance to the alliance. He makes Thrall even stupider and a woman hater, which is laughable considering he of all members of the horde actually fights for womens rights.
If we are lucky DeCandido, will never be allowed to pen another Warcraft novel. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this one, unless you can bear to see your favorite characters butchered ( personality wise) in an effort to glean what little lore this novel possesses.

2 out of 5 stars Fantastic if you're a 14 year old girl.......2007-05-01

While I do not mind the concept of a female character being the primary heroine of any story, I was extremely vexed while reading this particular piece of tripe.

Male characters, short of Thrall, are presented as cowardly, conniving, emasculated rags of filthy flesh, too stupid and dishonest to be of much use to Azeroth. If a male character is not flawed on some mental or spiritual level, he is lame or unfit, a mere shell of man when compared to near goddess-like images portrayed by the women in the story. Even a mere soldier is said to wield his sword better than his father ever did but worse than his mother. There is not a single male character in the book who is noble, upright, brave, or the best at anything.

Even Warchief Thrall is seen to blow-up at Jaina Proudmoore at their first meeting in the story. This is not the noble and wise Warchief of the Horde that those who play the MMO are accustomed to; this is one author's seriously flawed perception of the male of the species.

Again, I have no problem with a female heroine in ANY story. But what is present here is NOT the magnification and elevation of women for their own merits, but by the degradation and emasculation of their male counterparts. Even when a female character exhibits deep flaws (Magna Aegwynn) she is allowed the opportunity to redeem herself while males (Major Davin) never achieve salvation but rather slink off, victims to their own insurmountable neuroses.

Further, character and plot development take a back-seat to repetition of the basic lore prior to Jaina's becoming the leader of Theramore. Yes, Jaina betrayed her own father to keep a promise to Thrall. Yes, Thrall and the other orcs were corrupted by the Burning Legion, brought to Azeroth to fight for the demons, defeated and enslaved by humanity, and ultimately freed by the young Warchief. Yes, Magna Aegwynn defied the Order of Trisfal, was inhabited by the soul of Sargeras, and was responsible for the evil that was Medivh. But when these points are repeated over and over, ad nauseum, one begins to wonder if there is more to the story than this? A lot of padding here to support what, in truth, is very little substance.

Further, the author seems to know exceedingly little about the world of Azeroth as it manifests in its most elaborate and versatile medium: the MMORPG that is The World of Warcraft. At one point, a demonic ritual is performed which leaves behind the apparent stench of sulfur and thyme. While a seemingly trivial detail that might be overlooked, ardent fans of the Warcraft universe would wonder, "Why thyme?" Why not one of the herbs found in Azeroth such as Silverleaf, Plaguebloom, or (more appropriately, given its proximity to areas of demonic manifestation) Gromsblood? Did the author of this book even play the game prior to writing it or did he just research the lore of the world and hope for the best?

If you're a 14 year old girl, still prone to thinking of boys as "icky" then this is the book for you. If you're an adult who enjoys all that Azeroth has to offer and finds the lore of the world compelling, you may skip this tome safely.

Two stars because I'm feeling generous today.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed, but Decent.......2007-02-10

I was excited to start reading this book when I got it. I was a little disappointed though. It's not a BAD book, it's just not good. The plot is not strong and there isnt enough character developement. Most of the book is people standing around talking about who did what and discussing the past. I thought the book started strong and there are some high points and interesting characters, but when I finished the book I remember thinking... "that's it?"

    Book Description

What is happening today in the world of world television? With intense commercialization and more open national markets, along with technological convergence and greater concentration of ownership, the international TV landscape is changing at a bewildering pace and in a host of different ways.
Contemporary World Television presents a unique overview of the global issues raised by these transformations in television. It looks at how they have affected the public interest and society across the globe and how the role of television as a nation-builder is experiencing erosion and evolution. The book's host of international expert contributors also examine TV's handling of news, and sexual content and its role in military conflicts. As well, they provide current assessments of how the global trends have diversely affected many different countries, regions, or language communities outside the Anglophone mainstream.
Fully illustrated, the book also uses case studies and selected reading guides and thus provides a transparent and accessible but in-depth introduction to central developments, issues, and concerns in contemporary world television.

5 out of 5 stars The One and Only - Bacharach in Print.......2003-04-15

Even though they were one of the greatest songwriting teams of the 1960's, there's never been a book written about Bacharach and David. "Burt Bacharach & Hal David: What the World Needs Now" is the first. It is full of strong archival material and includes Platts' interviews with Burt and Hal, plus many artists, including Dionne Warwick, Gene Pitney, and B.J. Thomas. The book is a detailed wealth of information of this songwriting team's body of work. A must read for Bacharach/David fans, musicians and music historians. The book tells the complete story of Bacharach and David's songwriting partnership, from the 1950s to their reunion in the 90s. The book includes color photos of record sleeves, a detailed discography, chart information and a comprehensive list of every song Bacharach and David wrote together. Robin Platts' style of writing is comfortable and concise. As a songwriter myself, I was inspired by this book.

Ask different people who Leo Lionni is and you might get different answers: a children's book author, a graphic designer, a lecturer, teacher, art director--in short, a 20th century Renaissance man. Now the man, who is 87 years old and still hard at work, answers for himself in the autobiography Between Worlds. Readers who know Lionni's work will take pleasure in learning more about it; those who are only now coming to know of the man will find much to amaze and inspire them in the details of his life. Born in Amsterdam in 1910, Lionni developed an interest in art early. By the time he was 30 he had lived in at least five countries, learned four languages, and taught himself a great deal about art, architecture, music, and literature.

Throughout his life Lionni has had a happy knack for being in the right place at the right time. After fleeing the fascism rolling through Europe, he found himself an assistant art director at a Philadelphia advertising agency. There his talent and genius found an outlet in the ambitious "Great Ideas of Man" campaign, which put his name on the map and brought him into contact with some of the great artists of the day. He gathered friends and acquaintances of the caliber of Man Ray, Piet Mondrian, and Andy Warhol. Today Lionni lives on a farm in Tuscany and is hard at work on a series of fables for children. His first 87 years have been so remarkable, one can't help but wish he had another 87 ahead.

      Book Description

Here, sumptuously illustrated, is a superbly written account of a remarkable life--a life spent divided between Europe and America, between art and commerce--by the famous artist, art director, and children's book author Leo Lionni.

Born in Holland, half Jewish, raised in Amsterdam, Brussels, Genoa, Philadelphia--Lionni is a man of many languages and cultures but no real home. His story is one of a constant search, a search that takes him from an ideal early childhood to a strict education in Italy that proved largely irrelevant to his future, and then to exile from Fascist Italy in America; from being a highly political aspiring artist to becoming a highly successful advertising director (he invented the famous "Never underestimate the power of a woman"  campaign) and a powerful force in the world of graphics as the art director of Fortune magazine; from life in the affluent commuter world of Connecticut to a return to Italy and the life of an artist. After all this--a full life by any account--he finds yet another successful vocation as the author and illustrator of children's books that have sold millions of copies throughout the world.

Lionni tells his story--it encompasses his early romance and happy marriage, and his countless extraordinary friends and acquaintances--in the most elegant and persuasive prose, the kind of English that only a distinguished European can write. And since his story is also the story of a lifetime of creativity, throughout the book are examples, in color and black-and-white, of his remarkable body of work--painting, sculpture, ceramics, mosaics, photography, graphics, and, of course, illustration. This is an autobiography both of great intellectual and artistic sophistication and of large human appeal.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars What a Life!.......2005-01-01

In the US Leo Lionni designed the catalogue for Edward Steichen's big FAMILY OF MAN photo show in the 1950s, and so blame it on Lionni--blame WE ARE THE WORLD on him too. He gave Andy Warhol his start drawing pictures of women's shoes in advertising. And he designed the Ab-Ex inspired US pavilion at the 1958 Brussells Worlds Fair. He was a protege of Marinetti and felt a kinship with the Italian futurists, although he knew in his heart of hearts he was not a Futurist himself. At the same time Fascism was descending upon Italy and Lionni knew too many Communists. So he left his wife and little Mannie and Paolo and moved to Philadelphia. Later, Paolo died under mysterious circumstances, a death so bitter and poignant that poor Lionni can't even tell the reader what happened in simple sentences, but I take it that he either died of heroin overdose, AIDS or suicide. Nora was the name of Mme. Lionni, and she is pictured here as a saint, the perfect wife like Nora in the THIN MAN movies, plus sexy like Myrna Loy or indeed Nora Barnacle the wife of James Joyce. In all the photos she is distinctively stylish, as befits one who has lived in Genoa and Naples and Milan.

Among the interesting adventures of Lionni in America was his stint at Black Mountain College. I've read a lot of accounts written by people who went to Black Mountain (in North Carolina) and his is among the best, for he met there Jean Varda and Jacob Lawrence, and the Gropiuses among others, all in one ecstatically remembered summer right after World War II. Anyone interested in Black Mountain College might well go out and buy this book just for the chapter on BMC. Lionni also has fond memories of Alexander Calder, and Leger, and Man Ray, which will take the bitter taste out of the mouths of Man Ray fans who were stung last year to find out that their hero might have worked in concert with the Black Dahlia killer (in the book BLACK DAHLIA AVENGER, a very good book but harsh on Man Ray!) This book presents the human, funny side of Man. Lionni was an okay designer and an okay painter, nothing to write home about, but evidently he bloomed when he started writing books for children. Maybe the death of his own boy, Paolo, heightened his sensitivity to what children like and don't like. As of this writing he is still going at age 94, still creating his precious little books for kids. This memoir has its dull spells, but they are largely because Lionni's style is not really English at all, but some hybrid blend of Babelfish and Socialist cliches.

From the traveling troupes of the Wild West all the way to the bright lights of Broadway, Bert Williams broke through the color barriers and changed the face of the American stage.

It is not hard to argue that every black performer in show business owes something to Bert Williams. Discovered in California in 1890 by a minstrel troupe manager, Williams swiftly became a regular player in the troupe. Traveling on from the rough-and-ready "medicine shows" that then dotted the West, he rose through the ranks of big-time vaudeville in New York City, and finally ascended to the previously all-white pinnacle of live-stage success: the fabled Ziegfeld Follies on Broadway.

Inspite of his triumphs--he brought the first musical with an all-black cast to Broadway in 1903--he was often viewed by the black community with more critical suspicion than admiration because of his controversial decision to perform in blackface. Modest, private, and conservative in his personal life, Williams left political activism and soapbox thumping to others. More than the simple narration of a remarkable life, Introducing Bert Williams offers a fascinating window into the fraught issues surrounding race and artistic expression in American culture. The story of Williams's long and varied career is a whirlwind of inner turmoil, racial tension, glamour, and striving--nothing less than the birth of American show business.

            Book Description

China Live offers a unique insider's view of two of the most important forces shaping our era--the rise of global satellite news and the rise of China. Exploring not only how events shape television, but how TV can shape the news as it unfolds, CNN Hong Kong bureau chief Mike Chinoy recounts his experiences in key political conflicts around the world, from Northern Ireland, Lebanon, and Afghanistan to Indochina, the Philippines, and North Korea. Chinoy focuses especially on China, where he was instrumental in CNN's unprecedented live broadcasts of the student uprising and army crackdown in Tiananmen Square in 1989--a turning point in modern journalism that played a critical role in shaping international perceptions of China.

            Customer Reviews:

            1 out of 5 stars Mindless Pap.......2002-06-14

Chinoy approaches the writing of this book in much the same way his employer approaches world news: mistaking the urgent for the important, drawing hugely sweeping conclusions from anecdotal evidence, and ignoring all depth and context. Do yourself a favor and avoid this cartoon of a book. There are better ones out there.

5 out of 5 stars An Insightful Book.......2002-04-01

Personally, I thought this book had some great information covering the decade of turmoil that has enveloped China. I am a professor at Cambridge and I was glad that this book was made easily accesible for anyone, since I didn't have a good grounding of Chinese history. However, this must not be confused with a history textbook, for the writing in there is not to inform, but to show Mr. Chinoy's point of view. I think that some of these reviews are not justified as they pick up the book expecting to read a text on the Tianamen Square massacre. I appreciate the fact that this book is not a text but an insightful and compelling look from an insider's point of view.

            1 out of 5 stars pretty superficial.......2001-07-13

This book is pretty superficial, [....] Chinoy is generally much more pro-China than against it. That is, he tends to repeat how China is opening and liberalizing toward a more "democratic" China, as he calls it (a dubious prediction to those of us in the China studies field). A look at CNN archives of his reports makes this very clear. The criticisms he makes are in the area of human rights abuses and political repression, which doesn't make one anti-China. Facts are facts, [...]--the world's not out to get you. I suppose ANY critical reporting of China makes one anti-China, right? Maybe we should only report happy, smiling Chinese faces. Chill.

            4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2001-06-04

Before making any comment on the book, I will first confess to being an ignorant westerner with no understanding whatsoever regarding China. That said, I found Chinoy's book to be very entertaining. I didn't begin reading it in the hopes of gaining some marvelous intellectual insight about the People's Republic, so I didn't judge the biography on that criteria. Rather, I found the story of Chinoy's career to be quite fascinating, due in part to my own journalist aspirations. His firsthand accounts, regardless of the conclusions drawn from them, are quite dramatic, especially his experiences at Tiananmen. If you're looking for a history of China, then take the advice of another reviewer and buy a "real" book. However, if you're looking for an entertaining narrative about life as a foreign correspondent, then this read is for you.

1 out of 5 stars Mike Chinoy doesn't know anything.......2001-02-04

Mike Chinoy has no understanding of China whatsoever. When you watch him on CNN you can see how the general anti-China views of the American public are generated. It is very disappointing that somebody who has lived in Asia for so long could write and say such biased and false things. Everybody in the region that watches CNN thinks that Mike Chinoy is a joke, and this book shows more proof that this is true. It is a shame that CNN, a respected, worldwide news agency, would allow Chinoy to constantly spout out so much ignorance in his reports.

As with the rhythm guitar book, this is an excellent inexpensive, short, straightforward course, which will get you off to a great start, playing some scales and a few nice riffs. If you are starting out, this is what you are looking for. You will impress your friends and yourself by being able to actually make progress in a short time.
