Book Description
Colonialist Photography is an absorbing collection of essays and photographs exploring the relationship between photography and Europe and American colonialism. The book is packed with well over a hundred captivating images ranging from the first experiments with photography as a documentary medium up to the decolonization of many regions after World War II.
Reinforcing a broad range of Western assumptions and prejudices, such images often assisted in the construction of a colonial culture. In these thirteen essays, Colonialist Photography considers:
· How photographs tended to support the cultural and political rhetoric of racial and geographical difference between the West and its colonies;
· The range of images from "scientific" categorizing and recording methods to "commercial" pictures for collection and display, such as postcards and magazine advertisements;
· How photographers contributed to cultural, social, and political ideas of race by highlighting racial distinction in their work.
By drawing upon methods from anthropology, literary criticism, geography, imperial history, and art history, Hight and Sampson offer a rich source of current ideas about the relationship between colonialism and visual representation. Using case studies and recent forms of interpretive analysis, these post-colonial readings provide a thought-provoking analysis of how we imagine race and place.

Penzler Pick, March 2001: Joe Gores is a mystery writer's mystery writer. For more than 30 years he's been writing novels and short stories, many of them DKA files. DKA stands for Daniel Kearny Associates, a fictitious agency specializing in repo work, which is very closely based on the agency Gores worked for while honing his craft as a writer. In a fascinating introduction to the 12 DKA files in Stakeout on Page Street, Gores describes his life as a repo man, his relationship with the real and fictitious characters at DKA, and the encouragement he received from Anthony Boucher, who suggested he make contact with Fred Dannay, who eventually published all of these stories in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine.
Although Gores has written other short stories and full length novels, it is those about the men and women at DKA that most capture the imagination. These stories are procedural, telling of the day-to-day grunt work of the repo man. There are no guns, no flashy showdowns, no huge body counts, because, as Gores explains, nobody wants to kill or get killed over the repossession of a car for the bank. But the stories are gripping nonetheless. How can a simple repossession drive a woman to suicide? In File #1 the answer is: all too easily when you're young and you've picked the wrong man to love.
Gores's sixth full-length DKA novel will be published in 2001, and we owe a lot to the small publishing company of Crippen & Landru for reintroducing us, after a hiatus of several years, to Larry Ballard, Kathy Onoda, Dan Kearny, and all the hard-working folks at DKA. If you haven't met them before, this is the perfect introduction. --Otto Penzler
Book Description
ALL THE DKA FILES STORIES
More the 30 years ago a young private investigator named Joe Gores was encouraged by the great mystery critic Anthony Boucher to record his experiences in a series of short stories for Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine. Thus began the first series of tales that looked at a PI's cases as they actually happened, from the very serious (for instance, when a repo-man someone who repossesses cars when loans are in default can send a woman to suicide) to the comic (as when the Dan Kearny associates have to grab a fire engine that hasn't been paid for). And the characters are just as colorful, ranging from professional conmen to a gypsy who issues a curse as her car is driven away.
Stakeout on Page Street includes a new introduction and prefaces to each story by the author, and a complete checklist of Joe Gores's mystery novels and short stories.

A Wonderful Addition For DKA Fans.......2003-11-29
Fans of Joe Gores' DKA Files novels will be thrilled with the discovery of this book containing the 12 DKA case files written for Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine. They are a wonderful addition to the Daniel Kearny Associates series if you've read the novels or, if you haven't, are the perfect introduction to the detectives who make up the company.
I think the real bonus to this book comes in two standout features. The first is the introduction by Joe Gores. In it he explains how the fiction Daniel Kearny Associates mirrors the real-life Dave Kikkert and Associates repo/P.I firm that Gores used to work for. He also reveals who his characters are modelled after including which character is based on him. The second feature is the preface to every story explaining how he came to write it, the events from which it was based and some interesting facts surrounding it. These prefaces certainly add another dimension to the stories.
As for the stories, each of them is more or less an account of a file involving a repo, a skip trace or a delinquent debtor. They are all somewhat out of the norm which is what makes them interesting reading. Take for example having to repossess a fire engine or a hearse, cases that spice up the life of a repo man and make for some very entertaining moments.
I've read all the DKA Files novels and this book of short stories was the perfect way to recap. There is the odd reference to events from the books thrown in which reminded me how much I enjoyed reading them. Crippen and Landru Publishers have done a superb job in putting the book together and have even included a checklist at the end of the book listing not only all of Gores' other books, but all of his short stories and when and where they appeared, his screenplays and television scripts too.
The Collected DKA Files.......2002-07-02
Joe Gores' DKA series, which details the operations and adventures a San Francisco repo firm, got its start in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine back in 1967. With six books in the series in print, this volume provides the admirable service of collecting the twelve DKA short stories into a single volume. Gore based the DKA characters and series on his personal experience and coworkers at a San Francisco repo firm, which lends the tales the zing of procedural authenticity and an atmosphere likely to appeal to Bay area readers. Each story is introduced by Gores, who explains its origin and fidelity to actual cases-as he grew more and more sure of his writing, Gores strayed more from the actual case facts, thus the stories grow progressively freer. In his introduction, Gores also discusses the problem of setting a long-running series in the present, but not having its main characters age at the same rate.
Running almost exactly twelve pages each, the stories are perfect for those times when you only have ten or fifteen minutes to sit down. The thrill of these stories come from the tricks and craftiness employed by the repo men (and women), and their quarry. Since no one is interested in killing or getting killed over an unpaid for car, guns don't come into play very often, although fisticuffs do provide for some action. And of course sometimes an unpaid for car is simply part of a greater crime... Most of the stories are fairly straightforward and enjoyable detailings of interesting repo cases. A few, such as the Dashiell Hammet homage, "Beyond the Shadow" and the anti-developer "Do Not Go Gentle", with its Snidely Whiplash villain, do not work as well. My own favorite stories are the more whimsical ones, such as "The O'Bannon Blarney File" in which a hearse is repoed, or "Jump Her Lively, Boys!" in which a fire engine is repoed. The best of all however, is "The Maimed and The Halt", whose denouement is masterful, hilarious, and true.
This is the perfect introduction to the DKA series, for those who haven't encountered it, and the perfect gift for those who have. Unfortunately, the stories aren't packaged very well, with a terrible cover and the worst typography I've come across in a long time, but at least one doesn't have to track down ancient copies of EQMM to find the stories any more!
In the Beginning..........2002-05-02
I was introduced to Joe Gores and DKA in 1979 when the Mystery Book Club put "Gone, No Forwarding" on its selection list. I've been hooked ever since by his dead-on portrayal of life on the street for the repo-men and -women of DKA. His books even inspired me to enter the field, and twenty years later I still grab the newest book to learn the latest tricks of the trade.
Stakeout on Page Street was a real treat for any fan of the series who didn't have access to the short stories from Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine. Gores developed the "private eye procedural" and is still the most entertaining storyteller in the field because of the authenticity of his work. Watching the characters develop (without aging!) and reading the biographical introduction reminded me why I became an investigator and why I stay in the field. I still recommend the books to students and interns and cherish my own "private collection." Thank you, Joe, for sharing your stories and your world with us. I'm a happier person for experiencing your books.
And if you haven't read 32 Cadillacs yet, you're missing the ride of your life, and the magnum opus of the series.

Customer Reviews:
This fast paced story of car recoveries is worth the ride!.......2003-04-06
This book explores the world of gypsies, scamps and thieves and the offbeat group of Private Investigators who pursue them.
Always planning the next con, theft or bunko, a band of gypsies in San Francisco pull off a perfect crime. Using four branches of the same bank, slick tactics and phone banks, a group of gypsies manages to steal 32 cadillacs, all in the same day.
Facing a million dollar loss, the bank hires DKA, a local PI firm, to recover the stolen cars. Tipped off that a gang of gypsies was responsible, the DKA operatives, or repomen, start a chase that follows the cars across the US. Using very unconventional methods this quirky band of PIs, who are rejects and misfits, must use their wiles to "outcon the cons."
What makes this story really outstanding is the background tale of the gypsy life, description of how the cons are done and the plotting of the PIs to get the cars back. There is lots of action too including breakneck chases and escapes, including one where a DKA agent must leap into a car while his rear is filled with buckshot.
My favorite character is Ken Warren, a repoman with such a severe speech impediment that he barely communicates. But with extraordinary skills in hunting down and absconding with cars that no one else can get, he earns the respect of his fellow DKA agents.
A fun ride which I highly recommend.
Dare I Say, A Must Read.......2003-03-10
Why Joe Gores isn't a better known author is a complete mystery to me. Ok, Ok, he's won 3 Edgar Awards and all, but still you don't hear his name mentioned too often when asking for recommendations. His DKA Files series are full of action, humour, cons and scams and in short are pure entertainment. Well, no matter, I've discovered him now and I'm here to tell you that the series, and 32 Cadillacs in particular, is one that's not to be missed.
For the first time, the DKA Agency is pitted in a head-to-head battle with San Francisco's Gypsy community following a Gypsy scam that had netted a grand total of 31 Cadillacs. This is a once-in-a-lifetime job, recover the 31 Caddys for a nicely negotiated fat fee. But the Gypsies are crafty specialists of the long con and are exceedingly difficult to track down, so the recovery process will require the DKA team to use every resource available as well as every underhanded trick in the book.
To give you a head start, I'll introduce you to the central DKA characters. They are, Dan Kearny, Giselle Marc, Patrick O'Bannon, Larry Ballard and Bart Heslip. And two new characters are added to the staff, Trin Morales, a sleazy Latino who failed on his own as a PI, and Ken Warren, the genius carhawk with a killer speech impediment. Both bring tremendous dimension and entertainment to the DKA team.
But the real stars of the book are the Gypsies, colourful in character as well as in their various ingenious scams. Although they're such big thieves that they'd make a kleptomaniac look like a saint, you can't help but like them and hope that every now and then they'll catch a break.
Joe Gores is an author who has walked the walk, having been an agent in the real life DKA Agency. His first-hand knowledge and experience is apparent as his agents work through their cases. Rumour has it that the Larry Ballard could very well be modelled on Gores himself.
As a final word, if there are any Donald Westlake fans out there who have read and enjoyed his Dortmunder book Drowned Hopes, I would urge you to read this one too with a brilliant crossover of storylines. This book was an absolute pleasure to read and, I know it's a much-overused catch phrase but I would term it a "must read book".
A Very Funny Story.......2002-07-11
This book is full of heroes on all sides as DKA agents and gypsies strive to outwit each other throughout a very funny story. 32 CADILLACS is the best entry in the entertaining DKA series.
Great fun........2000-08-27
... I found it to be a nice treat.
It was an interestinglook at the workings of the repoman and an enlightning look at the gypsy lifestyle.
The members of the DKA agency were wonderfully drawn characters...very Runyon-esque. The gypsy characters could not have been more colorful. The plots and sidebars were neatly tied together.
There is a lot of humor mixed in with the crime, trackdowns, deceptions, double dealings and repo procedural. This would make a great movie. The action never stops and Mr. Gores does a great job of putting the reader inside the mind of the players.
"32 Cadillacs" was very entertaining and my initial Joe Gores book. I feel like I have discovered a new writer and look forward to more fun reads by Joe Gores.
Fun Repoman Romp.......2000-05-12
Fun romp featuring repo men (and women) of DKA as heroes versus gypsy clans. The king of American gypsies has died, and the clans from around the US are vying to have their leader be selected as the new king. To this end, they are stealing Cadillacs left and right in order to show up in the proper style at the big gathering where the new king will be selected. Lots of fun to be had as Gores skillfully describes scam after scam after scam, both by the gypsies and the repo men. Both groups are sympathetically portrayed for the most part, and the background detail about modern gypsy life is interesting in its own right.

Religion and Film: An Introduction
ASIN: 0788505939 |
Book Description
Imag(in)ing Otherness explores relationships between film and religion, aesthetics and ethics. The volume examines these relationships by viewing how otherness is imaged in film and how otherness alternately might be imagined. Drawing from a variety of films from differing religious perspectives--including Chan Buddhism, Hinduism, Native American religions, Christianity, and Judaism--the essays gathered in this volume examine the particular problems of "living together" when faced with the tensions brought out through the otherness of differing sexualities, ethnicities, genders, religions, cultures, and families.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
