Customer Reviews:
Enormous good fun - and good for learning the tricky C sounds.......2005-12-29
I realised just how popular this was with my 2 year old when she started talking about Cats carrying canes and collies carrying clubs. Its funny what kids take in but she really loves this book and it clearly has an effect on her too.
Its a simple story - a circus of c words - there is clarence the clown (Papa Berenstain I would say) and then he is loaded up with all kinds of things like Cats carrying canes, cows carrying cakes, Clara Catfish and so on - until CRASH
Good fun story, your 2 year and up will love the simple illustrations and enjoy browsing through themselves. A nice introduction to a single letter of the alphabet.
The authors' name says all........2004-09-11
The text consists of words beginning with C, all with a K sound, with a minimum of any other words. This is a great idea for teaching beginning readers, and I wish there were more books like this.
The illustrations are cute and the story is funny. In other words, it's by the Berenstains.
If you like the Berenstains, and if you like picture books with alliterative text, then you have two good reasons to try Berenstain's B Book, 0394823249.
However, don't repeat my mistake by ordering both "Berenstains' C Book" and "C is for Clown."
They are both the same book with different titles.

Customer Reviews:
Deceptive Title, Poorly Proofread, Major Historical Blunders.......2004-10-19
Having great deal of respect for the Readers and Writers series in general, I was truly disappointed by Joe Lee's _History of Clowns for Beginners_. First of all, be forewarned: Lee's subject is not so much circus clowns per se (they get about two pages), but the various incarnations of the trickster archetype in general, from the Paleolithic era through the present.
Besides the utterly groundless statements made about the disposition and mentality of preliterate civilizations, there are numerous major historical errors of an elementary nature. For example, Lee claims that no text of a Greek satyr play has survived--if, in fact, any "had ever even existed." What on Earth is he talking about? Evidently Lee isn't familiar with Euripides' _Cyclops_ or the fragments we have of dozens of other satyr plays. Another of Lee's bizarre statements is that Erasmus translated the New Testament "into Latin and Greek." Apparently Lee is unaware that the original language of the New Testament is, in fact, Greek.
Neither of the silly errors should have escaped the notice of a decent editor. Nor should the countless grammatical and punctuation errors which riddle the text, sometimes rendering it unintelligible.
After spotting various errors on subjects in which I am well versed, I began wondering how much I could trust Lee's representation of periods and concepts relatively unfamilar to me. And it's hard for a reader in that kind of skeptical posture to be impressed or intrigued by anything at all.
In short, this book was a disappointment--it's such a shame, since it's such a good idea for a book in the first place. I can only hope that Writers and Readers releases a new edition of _Clowns for Beginners_ after subjecting it to a major overhaul.
To Lee's credit, some of his wordplay is funny and his art is excellent.
A very well written book........2000-06-12
I thought the book was exceptionally written despite the fact that it lost it's meaning many times throught the important sections.

In this fanciful volume, Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, founder of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (O.M.A.), both analyzes and celebrates New York City. By suggesting the city as the site for an infinite variety of human activities and events--both real and imagined--the essence of the metropolitan lifestyle, its "culture of congestion" and its architecture are revealed in a brilliant new light. "Manhattan," Koolhaas writes, "is the 20th century's Rosetta stone . . . occupied by architectural mutations (Central Park, the Skyscraper), utopian fragments (Rockefeller Center, the U.N. Building), and irrational phenomena (Radio City Music Hall)." Filled with fascinating facts, as well as photographs, postcards, maps, watercolors, and drawings, the vibrancy of Koolhaas's poignant exploration of Gotham equals the heady, frenetic energy of the city itself. Anyone who loves New York will want to own this book.
Customer Reviews:
What an interesting philosophical dissertation.......2007-02-05
through the exhaustive historiography of the phases of congestion coney island brought to manhattan, koolhaas provides a rather cynical view of the Grid as being an ulimatley neutral zoning system of constraining ideas that represent the continual decline of a phantastically realistic civilization, represented as mutated symbols of architecture in the "void" of repeated "pregnancies."
it's really well written. funny. uses, like above, a somewhat inefficient vocabulary but remains in the same vein throughout. it is also a graphic design hubris consuming every page, even the left-justified text, showing off koolhaas's interpretation of the importance to combine scholarship and marketing.
buy it. it's a very good book.
Way Too Much To Think About Sometimes.... .......2006-11-09
A very inventive concept of New York's "culture of congestion" and how people are affected by the architecture they create. It is heavily researched and exhaustive, and after pretty much the third page I agreed with his concept of NY being "totally fabricated by man". What could of been a fascinating article becomes a spastic, heavy-handed read with a sledgehammer effect to your brain. (However, for those of us reading it for school, there are plenty of pictures that fill up the almost devastatingly vast 300+pages quickly.) It will scramble your brain with its thousands of nearly bumper-stickerish statements ("It hides life." "The Mountain MUST become architecture.") written with pretentious glee. However, I believe an independent scientific study has concluded that when pretending to read this book on the train people around you will assume your IQ is 40% higher than truth.
Eating oysters with boxing gloves, naked, on the nth floor........2005-05-25
The quote written above is excerpted from Delirious New York. It is a perfect example of the lyrical quality of the writing prevalent throughout this amazing book. Delirious New York is not an objective chronological listing of New York's development, but a collection of manifestos and stories with opinionated perspectives about a city founded on the idea that maximum congestion is a desirable factor. It is informative, funny (the midget firefighters of Coney Island had me laughing aloud for a solid minute or two), twisted, and inspiring.
Rem Koolhaas is edgier and far more interesting literary figure in architecture than say, Le Corbusier. Koolhaas's analytical yet shockingly refreshing writing style is a blessing for architecture, since he stays away from academic incoherent writing style that most architectural historians and architects tend to employ.
Get a copy of this book if eclectic (and at times disturbing) tales of architecture and urban development is something you think you will enjoy.
best koolhaas ever, man.......2004-01-30
koolhaas is a bit over-the-top for me, but this I think is is best work. it's worth checking out if only for the story of coney island. once you get past blisteringly pretentious phrases like "coney island is a fetal manhattan", you'll find it gloriously entertaining as both a narrative and theoretical work.
the culture of congestion.......2002-12-24
This is by far Koolhaas's most accessible work, as it is rooted so clearly in detail from the city's past. Further, the book is simply brilliant. His take on urban history is to Jane Jacobs what Socrates is to common sense. New York is a special case of modernism that sprang from a special constellation of poltiical and technological forces that collectively create a cultural "big-bang" at the turn of the century. Read it. Blow your mind.
Book Description
Delirious, mysterious short stories by The Chuckling Whatsit's Richard Sala. Maniac Killer Strikes Again! is the tongue-in-cheek title of this "Greatest Hits" collection of "mysterious and delirious" comic strip stories by Richard Sala, hand-picked by the author from three of his long out-of-print books. Sala has selected ten of his favorite macabre tales that showcase his unique niche as a master storyteller lurking beneath the b-movie visual tropes. Included is the entire multi-chapter serial "Thirteen O'Clock" (which was the genesis for his MTV serial "Invisible Hands" on the cult classic Liquid Television) as well as such gleefully spooky stories as "The Fellowship of the Creeping Cat", "The Awful Secret of Dr. Coffin" and "The Impostor". Each story has been reworked and reformatted by the artist for this wonderfully designed 8" x 8" trade paperback.
Mix noir-ish suspense and late-night horror movies, add a dose of whimsy and a touch of German Expressionsim and you get these delightfully creepy tales featuring: The shadowy snooper Mr. Murmur; a living, disembodied head; evil plastic surgeons; a museum of stuffed birds; a woman-eating plant; secret societies; hidden identities; girl detectives; and a birthday party that turns out to be anything but happy. Plus, Sala has created new art specifically for this volume. Maniac Killer is the perfect primer for those unfamiliar with Sala's brand of whimsical horror, as well as a must-have for fans of his comic book series Evil Eye and his books Peculia, The Chuckling Whatsit and The Ghastly Ones.

Book Description
To Neil Rucker, seven months, one week, and a day is too long to wait in between dates. But life as a Spanish language teacher to missionaries in Ecuador affords little opportunity for romance. When his worst student, Jay Jarvis, suggests a respite in Greenville, South Carolina, so begins Neil's delirious summer. Neil sees his chance to meet a sweet succession of southern women, but little does he know that the girls of Greenville are now more elusive than a snowflake in the Ecuadorian jungle. As they church-hop in search of the perfect man, Neil tries to find the perfect girl among the Neapolitan choices: a demanding redhead, a joy-riding blonde, and a very tardy but intriguing girl with raven hair and a pierced eyebrow. Who knew relational gumbo would look like this?
Customer Reviews:
Change of pace was fine, but it was a long trip!.......2006-10-24
This was something that I charged into head on. I can easily say that I took the same route with "Flabbergasted", and I found an author that I want to keep up to date. I didn't exactly blast through this like I can do with other reads, but I did finish it, and I can say that I recommend it. I can easily see why this might be a favorite for some, yet I can also see how others might have been in some spots and this and thought, "COME ON! Let's pick up the pace, Blackston." There are times where I'll pick up what I'll label a mediocre read, yet it'll leave me craving for more in the end. That's how this was for me.
So, is this where we depart with Jay Jarvis? Probably not, but we do meet Neil Rucker. By the way, Jay is the slowest Spanish student that Neil has EVER had to endure. You'll join Neil on furlough to South Carolina. I think my major disappointment was that I expected a whole lot of wacky stuff, just like in book #1. But while it wasn't filled with that, there were instances where I was able to laugh out loud a few times. So when Neil meets Jay's friends, (Darcy, Steve, Alexis & Lydia) they all go on a beach trip. Neil is personally looking to find love, while others might be looking to rekindle old flames amidst fire. Take another ride in Lime Sherbet! Through it all we learn a little bit about crabbing, maybe a lesson with a tangelo, but ultimately we learn a huge lesson about change. This is about learning how to hit the curve balls that God throws at you. Yeah, you may hear of some church hopping here and there, but that isn't exactly the main idea here.
So, was I glad I made this journey when it was all over? Yeah, I really was. I just didn't realize it was going to be such a long trip! I personally thought there were a few too many unanswered questions. Oh well. Will this keep me from reading Ray Blackston in the future? No way. I look forward to my next read by him, and I'm really looking for a big surprise! My hopes are indeed up, Mr. Blackston, and I'll be diving deep into the next read with more gusto than ever.
While this wasn't my favorite read, I can still say thank you for the change of pace. Keep on keepin' on!
My favorite example of Christian fiction.......2006-07-19
After reading Flabbergasted, I quickly became a fan of Ray Blackston and his quirky characters. And he impressed me even more with Delirious Summer. There is such an element of fun in his decriptions of the many wacky characters in this book that I could not help but be amused. Unlike other writers in the Christian fiction genre, Blackston doesn't try to shove oversimplified moral lessons down his readers' throats; he offers us instead insight into the minds of normal, flawed people and how they approach their relationships with God. Who wouldn't want to read about a man who climbs roofs to talk to God, a mentor who uses a tangelo to instruct young men about the nature of love, or a girl with a piercing who has a milkshake ministry? Great book. Great author.
Tangelo dreams bursting at the Lemon-Lime seams.......2006-06-11
Christian Spanish Teacher Dude (& friend of formerly-Agnostic-Stockbroker-turned-Christian-Missionary Dude) braves newly-charted Christian Singles dating scene waters until Ecuadorian tragedy strikes.
Not my favorite book.......2005-05-24
I guess I'm in the minority in saying that this book wasn't one of my favorites.
I'm not particularly interested in the "lad-lit" type of books. I did like the humor, but there didn't seem to be much depth to the characters or the storylines. It seemed that the main point of the guys was to get a woman and the women were church-hopping just to find a man. It was like THE most important thing. And that all seemed to ignore the point of going to church--to worship God among believers.
It seemed whenever a storyline or character looked promising, the author seemed to stop exploring yet. I started to take an interest in Neil and Alexis when they talked about their parents, how Alexis was rejected by her father. But after the one conversation, the storyline didn't develop. The same with Darcy and her parents, who threatened to cut her off because of her Christian beliefs. I thought the fire at the missionary story showed promise, but that seemed to end and didn't seem to indicate that it would go anywhere.
So, I was not to excited about this book. Others might enjoy it though. At least the humor and the relationships were clean, and not trashy as in a lot of books these days.
Blackston has found a niche.......2005-05-18
A Delirious Summer is the sequel to Flabbergasted. This time Neil Rucker acts as narrator, although many of the same characters from Flabbergasted make an appearance.
Neil Rucker is a missionary working as a language instructor in Ecuador. Rucker is about to embark on an 8-week furlough. After he tells Jay (from Flabbergasted) that he has been dateless for 7 months, one week, two days and counting ... Jay tells him about the girls in Greenville, South Carolina - and convinces him to spend his furlough there.
Rucker decides to follow Jay's suggestion and travels to South Carolina where he meets Darcy, Lydia and Alexis, mingles with the men's singles group, and goes on the annual beach vacation.
Life is good until disaster strikes in Ecuador and Allie and Jay need help. The group immediately leaves South Carolina for Ecuador to help.
A Delirious Summer has quirky characters and crazy situations. It's another lighthearted read with a lot of laughs and includes spiritual insights. I enjoyed A Delirious Summer, but not as much as I enjoyed Flabbergasted.

About a band connecting people with Christ.......2007-07-18
Fans of United Kingdom worship band "Delirious?" will be delighted: this book is as uplifting and encouraging as the music itself! The passion of the lyrics and the mission of the music group will reach your soul through these artistic, well-designed pages.
"Delirious?" began as a worship team for a youth ministry called "Cutting Edge." Growing in recognition throughout the UK, it wasn't long before the band was also being discovered `across the pond' in North America--and beyond.
The book is named for one of the group's most popular songs. "I Could Sing of Your Love Forever" has quickly become a favorite in many contemporary churches and worship settings. Reading through these pages is like going on tour with the band and having a backstage pass. The reader is taken behind the scenes as the musicians share their own personal stories--triumphs and achievements as well as struggles, frequent disappointments, and tests of obedience.
Martin Smith, Stu G, Jon Thatcher, Tim Jupp and Stew Smith are "Delirious?" and here they write both as musicians and as Christians exploring their faith. One theme of their musical work is "We'll see your (God's) glory here." The band unpacks this concept as they discuss their own motives and experiences in producing worship music.
More than chart-topping successful songs, the band is about changed lives and helping people connect with Christ in lifelong ways. As many fans have already realized, this band is more than a musical group; they are a mission, a message, and a movement.
Armchair Interviews agrees.
Book Description
Composed after the collapse of his political hopes, Milton's great poems Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes are an effort to understand what it means to be a poet on the threshold of a post-theological world. The argument of Delirious Milton, inspired in part by the architectural theorist Rem Koolhaas's Delirious New York, is that Milton's creative power is drawn from a rift at the center of his consciousness over the question of creation itself. This rift forces the poet to oscillate deliriously between two incompatible perspectives, at once affirming and denying the presence of spirit in what he creates. From one perspective the act of creation is centered in God and the purpose of art is to imitate and praise the Creator. From the other perspective the act of creation is centered in the human, in the built environment of the modern world. The oscillation itself, continually affirming and negating the presence of spirit, of a force beyond the human, is what Gordon Teskey means by delirium. He concludes that the modern artist, far from being characterized by what Benjamin (after Baudelaire) called "loss of the aura," is invested, as never before, with a shamanistic spiritual power that is mediated through art.

Book Description
The Delirious Museum gives a new interpretation of the relationship between the museum and the city in the twenty-first century. It presents an original view of the idea of the museum, proposing that it is, or should be, both a repository of the artefacts of the past and a continuation of the city street in the present. Storrie re-views our experience of the city and of the museum taking a journey that begins in the Louvre and continues through Paris, London, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, re-imagining the possibilities for museums and their displays and re-examining the blurred boundaries between museums and the cities around them. On his quest for The Delirious Museum he visits the museum architecture of Soane and Libeskind, the exhibitions of Lissitsky and Kiesler and the work of such artists as Duchamp and Warhol, taking readers on a stimulating journey through cities and museums worldwide. Serious general readers interested in urban culture, design and architecture, as well as professional architects, cultural studies and museology academics will enjoy the book, which is well illustrated in black and white.
