5 out of 5 stars Bram Sotker's Dracula.......2006-07-10

The film, Bram Stoker's Dracula, is a wonderful adaptation of Bram Stoker's book. The film follows the book almost faithfully and is fast paced and gripping. This book is a must-have for Dracula fans; and I recommend another book, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, that, by its title, would not lead a Dracula fan to read it. But, by all means, I highly recommend it and you will not be able to put the book down. The Historian will sweep you off of your feet with its well documented Dracula story.

4 out of 5 stars school review.......2004-02-13

The book Dracula is a great book, it is a clasic novel that every person should read evin if they dont like the whole gothic sean. The book keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time you cant even put it down to go pee its so good, I figured it would be just a nother rip off of some stupid movie that someone wrote but this book is where all the vampire novels came from, this is the fother of all vampire novels and it is the best.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favorites.......2003-10-28

Yes, it is slightly campy and overacted but it was a genuine reproduction of the book - only better. The mood, the story, the characters, the castle, I liked it all.

This Dracula is not the violent, blood-thirsty monster featured in so many of these types of movies. Instead, Gary Oldham (what a selection!) is the dark, sensuous eternal phantom, at once mesmerizing and intoxicating. The trick of using a diary is especially effective in this case in that it gives the story some structure. Even Keanu Reeves was good as the helpless husband.

I think this book is a must for fans of horror films and artsy movies. This Dracula is an artistic venture into the horror genre, most notorious for its gore and guts aspects. I like the photographs and the conceptual designs being put into the movie.

        Book Description

Created on the occasion of the Juilliard School's 100th anniversary in 2005, this book offers an unprecedented look at Juilliard's historic stringed instrument collection. The collection, assembled over the course of the last century through generous gifts of instruments and funds to the school, is vividly represented by photographic and narrative accounts of 25 instruments (and three bows) of particular historic interest by such illustrious makers as Amati, Bergonzi, Guadagnini, Guarneri, Stradivari, and others, as well as reproductions of historic documents and an annotated list of other instruments and bows. Among the featured instruments are a Stradivarius violin that once belonged to a Russian czar and was later owned by Avery Fisher, a Guarneri del Gesu violin played by a member of the Viennese quartet that premiered many of Beethoven's and Schubert's works in that genre, and a Stradivarius cello previously owned by Hugo Becker, head of the Berlin Hochschule fur Musik. Short essays sketch the history of Juilliard and its illustrious string department, and describe the crucial role of the Instrumental Loan Program, which allows students to borrow instruments for special performances and competitions as well as for longer-term use. The book includes a foreword by renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman, a Juilliard alumnus and holder of the school's Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Chair since 1999.

        Book Description

The Artist as Citizen is a compilation of Joseph W. Polisi's articles and speeches from his two-decade tenure as president of the Juilliard School. His writings focus on the role of the artist in American society as a leader and communicator of human values. The extended prologue includes Polisi's recollections of his early days at Juilliard and the selection process that resulted in his appointment as the school's sixth president. Also included is a discussion of the important role that Juilliard plays in the workings of Lincoln Center. Polisi makes a strong point that "there should be no dividing line between artistic excellence and social consciousness." He contends that the traditional "self-absorbed artist" is the wrong model for the arts in America in the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars Gathering of his many expert articles & thoughtful speeches.......2005-03-04

Dr. Joseph W. Polisi's gathering of his many expert articles and quite thoughtful speeches blend assessments of the performing artist's leadership role in society with a healthy dose of humor and insight, reflecting his past twenty years as president of Juilliard School. Music observations are only a part of The Artist As Citizen: even more important are the overall discussions of the politics behind the scenes and the role of artist and director in leading artistic movements.

It proved its value repeatedly over the years, but John Ardoin's 1987 Callas at Juilliard mysteriously slipped out of print some time ago. Callas conducted 23 two-hour opera master classes in 1971 and 1972; Ardoin transcribed and arranged these working sessions on more than 70 arias. Far from the stereotypical self-serving diva putting in a personal appearance, Callas was remarkably practical and specific in her observations. Recurrent themes include diction (particularly the expressive uses of consonants) and the necessity of finding a natural flow for the accents of the words, scrupulously applied to the rhythms of the notes. Callas offered her own ornaments, cadenzas, alterations of word placement, and even cuts; all of these are supplied in musical notation among the copious musical examples in the book. Although she might have been expected to concentrate on soprano repertoire, Callas in fact covered not only arias for all of the other voice categories but also duets (from Lucia di Lammermoor, Rigoletto, Cavalleria Rusticana). Often what Callas asked for was more easily said than done, and the overriding impression is of how exacting the profession really is. (Fans of the Terrence McNally play Master Class will be interested to know that Callas actually was conversant with the tenor arias in Tosca.) Amadeus Press deserves lasting gratitude for restoring this volume; it is to be hoped that someone will rescue Ardoin's 1974 study Callas, written with Gerald Fitzgerald, which is still the best book about the performer's art. --William R. Braun

          Book Description

Maria Callas returned to the stage in 1971 to teach master classes at Juilliard. This intriguing forum later inspired Terrence McNally's acclaimed play Master Class. Outspoken and uncompromising in her artistic beliefs, Callas worked through her legendary arias from Mozart, Verdi, Rossini, Puccini, and others. John Ardoin brilliantly captures the insights of a thoughtful singer who reveals herself to be not the imperious diva of her reputation, but a supremely self-aware artist concerned with passing along a great musical tradition.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars A constructive book..........2001-05-30

Callas provides good musical guidance on many famous soprano arias. Reading the book almost brings her back to life.

This is a good book if you're looking for some musical insights from one of the greatest musicians. She talks about technique, expression, and the characters themselves. This book would probably not interest you if you're looking for a biography of Callas. This book is more focused on the music and her insights.

4 out of 5 stars Document of a great musician at work.......2001-03-31

In 1971-72, several years absent from the operatic and performing stage, Maria Callas appeared in a series of master classes at Juilliard, which attracted attention far beyond the world of the admittedly famed music school at which they were held.

There were several reasons for this. At the time Callas was still the most famous opera singer in the world, as much for her entanglement in the lives of Aristotle Onassis and Jacqueline Kennedy as for her vocal and dramatic artistry. The format of the master class is a peculiar hybrid of individual lesson and public performance, both for the students and the teacher. As Ardoin and others have pointed out, whatever her concern for imparting her knowledge and experience to students, Callas undoubtedly saw the Juilliard classes as an opportunity to test the waters--appearing and even singing, under the guise of demonstrating, in public again to see if she could handle a possible return to her career.

Minus the extramusical baggage that surrounded them, and the excitement Callas' personal presence and vocal illustrations must have created, what remains of these master classes? These faithful transcriptions of many of the sessions give as good an idea as can be had without actually listening to tapes, and show that Callas was a scrupulous, detailed and demanding musical taskmaster. To operatic connoisseurs, there is much interest in the variants, cuts and cadenzas she suggests, illustrated in many musical examples which really need to be compared with published scores in order to obtain the clearest idea of her suggestions. One problem with the original edition was that the excerpts were riddled with printing mistakes--it remains to be seen how much, if any, of this has been rectified.

One is struck by the businesslike tone of much of the instruction, not at all like the embroidered scenarios of McNally's play, and how much Callas invokes her own teachers, such as Tullio Serafin, giving a real sense of the musical traditions of Italian opera. Ultimately, this book is mainly of interest to those who appreciate Callas the musician, not Callas the legendary diva. For such readers it repays careful perusal, though probably not all in one sitting. Amadeus Press is to be thanked for restoring this volume to the print catalogue.

This is NOT the best written book I've read. The style is actually a bit trite and tired. However, the information in this book is very informative and interesting. I think this book is essential reading for anyone interested in going to Juilliard, either for a degree or as part of their pre-college division. It's also a great read for people just interested in learning the "behind the scenes" of the school.

This description of life at one of the world's most famous music schools is remarkably accurate. The author explores the good and the bad, the wonderfully exciting and the surprisingly mundane, from entrance auditions to graduation juries. A great choice for those who really wish to know what Juilliard is like.

            Product Description

The stress and anxiety which performers experience at auditions and concerts can be managed through the use of many and varied techniques, here explored in a comprehensive book by oboist-composer Stuart Dunkel. Written as a practical guide for immediate use, in language free of confusing psychological terminology, The Audition Process offers a compendium of approaches as presented by other musicians, psychologists, and athletes.

The principal problem areas that one must confront, before and during an audition, are presented in four wide-ranging topical sections.

            I. The psychological adaptations to the stresses encountered. This includes understanding how the self operates, the pressures encountered, the indi vidual fears that must be addressed and the self-consciousness that precludes distraction.

II. The reality of the music business. This section encompasses methods of dealing with criticism, failure, jealousy, the realization that one's self-worth is no t directly related to how well one's work is accomplished.

III. Coping techniques and strategies. The focus here is on performance preparation, including understanding and managing feelings, utilizing self-talk, improving concentration, relaxing, using humor as an outlet for anxiety, adopting better nutritional habits, and the proper use of medications. IV. Successful outlooks and attitudes for auditioning. Here, Dunkel explores modes of confidence-building, suggestions for viewing an audition as a pos itive experience and how one's unique individuality can give strength and power to a performance.

            5 out of 5 stars A Major Contribution.......2000-05-15

Congratulations on a major contribution to American music. I read "Juilliard: A History" with admiration for its fine scholarship and courage in writing about contemporary events and still powerful people with such honesty.

5 out of 5 stars An inside job..........2000-03-09

The name Juilliard has been held synonymous with classical music training for so long that it is surprising that no-one has taken a potshot at it. This book is neither for or against Juilliard, but rather an appraisal of its strengths and weaknesses through a look at its history. The chapter on drama, containing so many references to now-household names, might be of particular interest to the casual reader. Dancers may be interested to find out why their department was forced to compete with another school in their own building. Musicians, whether they attended Juilliard or not, will find a lot of Olmstead's observations titillating. A good read, and a lot of insight from someone who worked there.

            3 out of 5 stars At long last-almost a bull's eye.......2000-02-16

Olmstead's book is long overdue. While the research appears thorough and the writing professional, there's at least one outright mistake. Olga Samaroff (Stokowski) never taught at the Curtis Institute, rather the Philadelphia Conservatory in the same city. She also implies that the Institute of Musical Art was the equal of the Juilliard Graduate School. All you have to do is compare the faculty and the student body prior to the merger to see that JGS was indeed where the hotshots were concentrated. I have personally concluded that the book is reliable in reporting on the post World War II Juilliard but take her account of its early years with a grain of salt. This is understandable since most of the "old guard" are now deceased. Still, a valuable reference for those of us in the field.
