5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, lively - like the times it describes.......2001-07-18

This is a fascinating look at a long-gone time. Mr. Blake's book not only gives the reader great insight into the artistry and work of Lon Chaney, it is a peak into the past, of the days of silent film.

Beyond the other rave reviews for this book relative to the artist, what made this book all the more valuable to me was Mr. Blake's description on movie-making at the turn of the 20th century. We can hear, feel and almost smell the greasepaint of that time, the hard work, the ramshackle artistry of these cinema pioneers.

This is one of the best books on early film, and a credit to the magic of Lon Chaney.

5 out of 5 stars A worthy companion.......2000-06-23

Michael F. Blake's second book on Lon Chaney, A Thousand Faces: Lon Chaney's Unique Artistry in Motion Pictures, is a worthy and much-welcome companion volume to the author's first book: Lon Chaney: The Man Behind The Thousand Faces. This book serves a two-fold purpose: First, Blake reveals a lot of new information he uncovered about the actor's life and films since his first book. Second, this time around biography takes a backseat to a detailed look at the films themselves (although there is still plenty to be learned of Chaney's life).

Being THE acknowledged Chaney authority and having acted himself at an early age, Blake is able to provide a knowledgeable and well-balanced analysis/commentary of Chaney's films (at least those that are not "lost"). While certainly the biggest fan of Lon Chaney, Blake maintains the needed objectively to fairly critique each film and performance. As with his first book, a big highlight here is the wealth of rare photos presented (including Lon both in and out of make-up), as is the always fascinating information on how Chaney, a make-up master, created those amazing characters. Blake is to be lauded for his vast efforts in keeping alive the legacy of one of the greatest talents of the silent era. Thanks to author Blake, all the many fans of Lon Chaney can be assured that Chaney's many talents and contributions to the world of film (and film make-up!) will never be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to a master of film.......2000-03-29

Before reading this book, I knew almost nothing of Lon Chaney except his reputation as a horror actor. I was amazed to discover exactly how misleading that title actually was. Blake's work introduced a genius at makeup and pantomime who was capable of playing any role convincingly. Through it, I gained a respect for a great but seldom-discussed actor.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a worthy sequel to Blake's first book on Chaney.......1998-09-29

This is one sequel that is worth waiting for! Armed with new information from the files of Lon Chaney's former business manager, Blake has written a worthy follow-up to his first book on the famous actor. This time, Blake covers Chaney's performances and the making of many of his films in the reader-friendly tone he established in his first book. Blake has broken new ground in film history, revealing that it was Chaney's idea to make "Hunchback of Notre Dame", NOT Universal's studio head, Irving Thalberg!! It is just amazing what new nuggets of information Blake dug up, including lengthy interviews with probably the only surviving crew memeber from Chaney's MGM days and a nurse who attended him during his last trip to New York where he sought a cure of his cancer. He also debunks the myth that Chaney would have played the title role in "Dracula". It is heavily illustrated with many super rare photos. This book is just as good, if not better, than Blake's first effort. Both are a MUST if you're an admirer of Lon Chaney.

5 out of 5 stars a must have for any fan.......2000-08-12

i feel any fan of the show should have this book. if you have been watching the show since the beginning you'll find it's nice to read on the characters or storylines you might have forgotten. if you haven't been watching since the beginning it's a nice history lesson about the show. it also has all the major fashion shows. what i like about it is it is divided in years and by the characters. so if you're looking for a particular storyline they are easy to find. but it is a great book for fans. it has a lot of nice stuff about the character, stars, and behind the scenes.

    Book Description

From an inside peek at the inner workings of Hollywood to the backstage drama of Broadway, from a poignant look at the black upper class to an honest look at the WASP elite, this elegantly wrought memoir of an extraordinary family has something for everyone.

Growing up with a black Auntie Mame-like mother (who performed with the likes of Lena Horne) and an Anglo sea-faring father, Susan Fales-Hill moved seamlessly between many worlds. But it was from her mother -- a woman who was dressed by Givenchy and sculpted by Alexander Calder, yet rejected by many a casting agent for her "dark," unconventional looks -- that Susan drew inspiration, particularly when she faced challenges in her own career as a television writer in Hollywood, a town that wasn't always receptive to positive images of people of color. As a result the two developed a bond that mothers and daughters everywhere will find inspiring. Both a universally touching mother-daughter story and a portrait of a dazzling American family, Always Wear Joy is a memoir readers won't soon forget.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Joyous, Joyful.......2007-08-26

Susan Fales-Hill presents a beautifully written story about her mother, the unforgettable Josephine Premice. While Ms. Premice was not publicly bestowed with all of the fame, fortune and accolades worthy of someone of her talent, Fales-Hill more than makes up for it with page after page of love, admiration, and respect for a woman who, through it all, always wore joy. Bravo to Ms. Fales-Hill! Bravo to Ms. Premice!

5 out of 5 stars Not your tragic mullato, and not your average black biography!.......2007-03-12

I can't recall how I came across this book, but I am so glad that I purchased it. In addition to being an interesting and gripping biography, this book portrays and loving, ambitious, and well-educated black family that, as a African American woman, I just don't see enough of. I had seen the work of Susan Fales-Hill, but I had no idea she was such a inspirational woman! I was thoroughly entranced and inspired.

    4 out of 5 stars A joyful read.......2007-01-10

The close relationship between the author and her mother Josephine Premice was refreshing.

    5 out of 5 stars I Love This Book.......2005-05-24

Centrally, this book is a tribute to the author's mother Josephine Premice. To Susan Fales-Hill, she was a superstar, devoted mother and wife. Her parents were set up by a friend of her father's. Josephine, at first, refused him. Time permits and she accepts his offer of a date. The two eventually fall in love and their marriage plans wmake the front cover of The Chicago Defender, an African-American news publication. On the other side, the Yankee gentry hearing of this is shocked and dismayed by her father's choice of bride. His name is taken off the social register.
To some people, it would be a fairy tale. But this is Fales-Hill's world. They lived in thier own world where everyone was welcome. They entertained the likes of Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll, and Eartha Kitt. Beneath the marriage, Ms. Hill's father had a wandering eye and her mother, despite her good looks and style, struggled to get the recognition she wanted in the entertainment industry. Premice was told she was too dark or not black enough. Hill defines her as a strong-willed woman who continued to live for the sake of her children.
What I like about this story is that it gives black women a sense of pride in themselves. Josephine and her friends took pride in their appearances even when things weren't in proper alignment. They managed to make it through good and bad times.
This is a time-honored book that will relate to black mothers and their daughters. Josephine Premice deserves her place in the entertaiment industry.

5 out of 5 stars Hungry for More -- Diahann Carroll Next, Perhaps?.......2005-05-13

After reading this book, I was hungry to know more about Josephine Premice, to hear her smoky-timbred voice. I bought the soundtrack to the Broadway musical "Bubbling Brown Sugar" just because I was hungry to match her voice, some still existent piece of her, to all that I had read about her in this book. There was a certain duality about her that the book captures in an unflinching manner -- her independent woman of the world/working entertainer in Europe life before her marriage, and her later frustration with being financially dependent on a white husband of blue-blooded means who had "fidelity challenges" but who was also the loving father of her children. This book is inspiring because it demonstates how one supposedly "too dark" African American woman of Haitian descent was able to stake her claim in the entertainment world of the fifties and beyond. Despite numerous instances of racism and rejection in her profession, she lived her life as her own self-possessed fabulous self, for herself and, I think moreso, for her children. My hope is that Ms. Fales-Hill will turn her next efforts towards biographies of her mother's friends such as Diahann Carroll and Lena Horne. Their lives as African American entertainers in spite of the industry and as "fabulous people" represent a side of the African American world that seldom sees the light of day, but should.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive, Delicious Vegetarian Food to impress friends.......2004-11-04

    I 1st borrowed this from the Library and have tried to make at least one recipe from books I borrow. I am a newbe to Vegetarian food and found this book so addictive. After making some of the recipes from this book I am totally convinced that a great vegetarian meal can be 10x tastier and better for you than a meat one. I loved this book so much that I ended up buying it as I'm now constantly using it. Why is this the best vegetarian book I have ever read;
    1. Usability, it is extremely easy to understand the recipes
    2. The ingredients are common and easy to make and master
    3. They taste delicious
    4. They look fantastic when you serve
    5. Best photography I've seen in a cookbook
    6. Truly will WOW all your vegetarian and non vegetarian friends
Trust me, you'll love it. This is my 1st amazon review ever and I really love this book. 10/10.

4 out of 5 stars Good book -- too short!.......2004-10-18

I received this cookbook as a gift, and at first thought, "I really don't need another cookbook!" My cookbook shelves were already overflowing, but after looking through this book, I decided I'd definitely find a place for it.

As with most vegetarian cookbooks, this one starts out with the basics about grains, protein sources, etc., with the added twist of discussing the actual nutrients we all need in our diets (iron, b vitamins, etc. and what they're good for). This section is only two pages, though, but there is general advice on what foods supply which nutrients. There are beautiful photos throughout this section, as well as accompanying each recipe in the book.

The next few pages cover the basic vegetarian pantry (with nothing more obscure than kosher salt and truffle oil) and basic recipes like veggie stock and basic tomato sauce. There's also a page on kitchen equipment.

The actual recipes are roughly grouped by meal type. Recipe chapters are: Breakfast; Soups & Salads; Appetizers & Snacks; Dips, Salsa, & Sauces; Entrees; Vegetables on the Side; Vegetarian Grills; Party Food; and Sweet Things. Some of the recipes are pretty basic (pancakes, anyone?), but in those cases there are usually variations suggested (like cottage cheese pancakes). More involved recipes have two-page "how-to" instructions with nice pictures and clear step-by-step directions. This approach makes recipes like Japanese Omelets (cut to look like sushi!) and (polenta-stuffed) Piedmontese Peppers incredibly approachable even for the faint of heart.

I was most surprised, though, that I found several new recipes to try. With my full shelf of vegetarian cookbooks, I expected to flip through this one and put it away forever. Not so -- from the Thyme and Mushroom Gravy (for a vegetarain Bangers and Mash!) to the aforementioned Peppers, there are several inspiring ideas in this book.

Most biggest complaint is that the book is much too short, especially for the price (so only four stars). Each section only has a handful of recipes, just enough to whet the appetite. but I definitely hope to see more from this author in future.

    5 out of 5 stars Gormet Veggieness=happie hippie.......2002-07-02

I just got this book yesterday, which happened to be my parents' 33rd anniversary, and so I made them a gormet meal, which looked gorgeous, tasted good, and was veggie. I made the mushroom and chickpea salad (mmmmmmmmm) and the rasberry roulade, which was rather complicated, but had photos of each step. it was sweet and pretty. :-D the only drawbacks of this book come from its being a gormet cookbook. the recipies take a while to make (about 3 hours for those two dishes) and some ingredients are really hard to find (such as rosewater). but her instructions are excellent, and the food tastes wonderful. For simpler and faster vegitarian dishes, The Teen's Vegetarian Cookbook
by Judy Krizmanic is excellent. It also is very savory, but it is geared toward the college student, and therefore the recipies are a little simpler and more basic. well I hope that this helped, and GO VEGGIES! hehehe

4 out of 5 stars Nice addition to the vegetarian library.......2001-09-21

This book caught my eye at a gourmet cook shop. The illustrations are as luscious as the recipes. While there are many "new" vegetarian cookbooks, few measure up to the description as this one does.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book, Tasty Recipes.......2001-07-26

I own a number of vegetarian cookbooks, and although all of them are good, they tend to be in the "nuts and grains" variety of cooking. Which I love, but its nice to get a different perspective sometimes, which is why this book is great. It breaks from typical veggie cookbooks in two aspects, actually: types of recipes, and the look of the book. Its simply beautiful, actually. I enjoy flipping through it and looking at the recipes. And so far, although I'm no master cook, the dishes have turned out as well as the pictures.

One downfall, I think, is the focus on mostly Asian dishes (again, I love Asian food, but it would be nice to get a few more non-Asian recipes... maybe in the sequel), and the small number of recipes in the book. I guess you can't have both huge, pretty pictures and lots of text at the same time... oh well.

However, it covers all the basics of vegetarian cooking as well as suggesting some exciting ideas. Pick up the veggie cookbook staples, and then this will make a wonderful addition to your collection!

5 out of 5 stars worth every cent I paid.......1999-04-05

I have only watched the Bold and the Beautiful since about 1996, that was when I learn't how to video record for when I was at work. This book is a wonderfully comprehensive guide to all things B&B. It starts from 1987, including how the cast were picked and hired. It begins with the Ridge/Caroline/Brooke triangle that leads to many intricately woven triangles. It has at the heart, the fashion industry with Eric and Stephanie Forrester, the owners of one fashion house. Their rivals are the Spectra's, lead by Sally with her daughter Macy and secretary Darla, working side by side with her. The love lives and rivalries of these 2 families are the main stories of this show. The book has beautiful colour photo's of the weddings, and behind the scenes happenings of various storylines are told at great length. For instance, did you know that the Rodney King racial riots broke out the same day as the Ridge and Taylor wedding? They couldn't wait to get home, they were really worried about their friends and family. Ridge and Taylor will always be my favourite couple, and their wedding photo's and bio's just make me love them more. At the very beginning of the book, it talks about the cast and crew and what they have done before. It shows the guest stars on the show, and even the different awards the stars have won in different years. The only flaw in the book is it is rather heavy, but is bound in a beautiful black cover. The cover has the photo's from the start of the show and will one day be a collectors item. It was written by Robert Waldron, who reports for our Australian magazine "TV Soap". He is an expert on a lot of TV Soaps and I hope he writes another one. All in all it was worth every cent I paid. 10 out of 10.

I managed to get the book at amazon although it was already out of print. It costed me a lot, but it was worth it. The B&B book is full of nice pics and many stories, also a detailed summary of what had happened from 87 to 96.

If you are a "real" doll collector, you would have this book not only in your personal library but as the centerpiece on your console. The photos in this book are so gorgeous you are left breathless---your heart starts pumping as you see even more artists that you would just love to have in your collection. These photos most definitely place doll making as an art form up there with the Monets of the world. Let's not forget the biographies that attach the photos. This book is not boring but a page turner. I love, love, love this book. I plan to give them as gifts so I can bring non-doll collectors to the bright side! Dorothy-Dandridge.com

      Book Description

Debby shows how the ebony connection communicates drama and rich texture, features ordinary items in unusual settings, and stimulates the eye by presenting the unexpected. No wonder black has been used successfully by quilters as far back as we have samples of surviving quilts! This book is dedicated to the premise that some of the traditional patterns can be sewn in quicker, more streamlined methods. Debby's innovative projects include a quick appliqu method that bypasses the use of freezer paper and a technique for using coffee filters for curved blocks. She proclaims the wonder of math with easy formulas for making any block with squares, triangles, and rectangles. AUTHORBIO: Debby Kratovil is a quilting teacher and prolific writer. She has been special projects editor for Quilt Magazine for ten years and says she enjoys teaching through the written word. Debby shares her patterns and techniques on her Web site, www.quilterbydesign.com, one of the oldest quilting sites on the Internet. Debby has been dubbed the 'power quilter' by her friends for the sheer number of quilts she makes. She is always motivated by the challenge of a new design and it execution in fabric.

I was disappointed. I love quilts with black backgrounds, but, this just didn't do it for me.

      4 out of 5 stars Quite interesting..........2005-10-10

I found the book very interesting. It includes detailed information regarding the history of the show.I especially liked, that it describes each and every storyline separately, that way you can't get confused.
The book also includes valuable info about the actors, memorable quotes, funny incidents, facts about them that are not known to many people. Also, there is plenty of info about the writers and the producers,it is magic to get to know what it takes to put a show together and keep it going.
I only wish there was more info about backstage stuff..beyond that, i enjoyed the book and i highly recommend it .

      5 out of 5 stars impressive.......2004-07-09

I had the opportunity of seeing a copy of the book in Ghana and i was amazed and very excited about it. I learnt more about the characters and the actors themselves. i think the book is excellent and i would not mind having a copy for my bookshelf
