Amazon Delivers the Music.......2005-05-16
I was really impressed with the entire purchase and selection of the sheet music from Amazon. I was able to print a sample of music to determine if it was proper for my level of play, and Amazon then delivered it flat as a pancake (in mint condition) to my door within three days.
This is a good book with notes and fingering suggestions that are clear. I play by sight and it is important to me to have clear, visible notation. The music is fantastic and it is rather easy to learn.
I purchased the book solely for Big My Secret, and on this song, Nyman writes his music very well. His style can be anticipated while you play. When you are going up an Arpeggio, there are not unique variations for the sake of being cute. Other composers will often throw in double sharps or double flats to make their music look different. Not with Nyman. An Arpeggio is an Arpeggio. The beauty is in the simplicity. The various scales and Arpeggios are written into Big My Secret as if Nyman laid them there with a delicate touch.
His use of accents and changing tempo allow the pianist to provide expression. Big My Secret is a small, but fantastic piece to add to any repertoire.
Impressive and Fulfilling.......2000-04-25
This buy was MOST definitly worth the purcahse. I'm obviously a huge fan of Nyman's but i was blown away by the notes he writes on page. THE PIANO sheet music only contains 6 songs, and two of them i have already commited to memory, and its only been 2 weeks. In fact, all of the songs except DEEP SLEEP PLAYING are on the soundtrack. The sheet music seems to have about 10 measures not contained on the soundtrack somewhere, but all of the main themes in the sheet music are on the soundtrack. Learn THE HEART ASKS PLEASURE FIRST, i have never had so many compliments playing song before until i learned this one. It's worth it.
Appreciation of the different styles.......1999-11-04
This book is amazing, although it doesn't have all of the songs from the film it has a wide variety of styles. Silver fingered fling is very energetic compared to The pedalling ankle. The most beautiful is Big my secret , the way it combines the slow but flowing melodies with the scale like interludes is very impressive. The heart asks pleasure first is the main them of the film but it is never played the way which is written in this book, which combines the different variations into one incredibly atmospheric theme.
6 pieces book........1998-07-09
Great music!!! The hot spots of this book are the pieces: "Big my Secret" and "The Heart Asks Pleasure First", which is NOT as difficult as it seams when you hear it on the CD or movie, but is impressive when you play it. The other 4 pieces are not on the soundtrack CD, at least their names aren't. Some information about the author and his work on the movie soundtrack.

It's what I was hoping for.......2007-01-05
This has some additional music from The Piano (some of my favorite themes from the soundtrack, although they don't translate as well on piano as the first book).
Additionally, the songs that are in both books are "cleaner" in this one: Big My Secret and The Heart Asks Pleasure First both feature easier to read (but identically played) notation.
The Piano is one of my favorite soundtracks and sounds difficult but isn't TOO Hard to play on the piano. It is very moving music and I really enjoy playing from both books.
But, Big My Secret and The Heart Asks Pleasure First are the most important pieces and they are in both books, so if that is all you like, no reason to buy this one too.
OH! One thing I was confused about is it is called a "pocket manual" I have NO idea why. This is a normal sized piano sheet music book. There is nothing "pocket" about it.

I only bought it for the music of 'The Piano'.......2000-08-09
I was somewhat disappointed because I was only interseted in the music for the film 'The Piano' by Michael Nyman and took a chance in buying a book with the best of all his music. The music for this film is quite different from his usual style and unless you realy like all Michael Nyman's music, you'd be better off buying another book of him with more music from 'The Piano'.

I had to buy this new volume for my last history class. I'm a tad bit pist that I had to spend so much but it is indeed alot better and more indept.

This item's listing is misleading and incomplete. I actually need the text, The Development of Western Music: A History, and this listing stated that it was paperback, and so I thought I would save some money. Actually, what I received was an Anthology, volume 2, Preclassic through the 20th century. Of course, this anthology is to accompany the text, but it does not say that! And what about Anthology Volume 1? It is not clear, in my opinion what one is actually ordering because there is no description of the book. The anthology is very nicely produced, with a glossy cover, over sized, and it lies flat with the spiral binding, but the printing is not that good, sketchy in places, and the notation for some works is tiny and hard to read. No helpful highlighting of main themes either, as in other anthologies I own.

This book is a very good source to anyone who want informations about music history. It was writed by a master hand, with a complete (but not exhausting)review of the evolution of our western musical language. Further, it contains musical examples, plates with main art works and composers pictures, and timelines relating the musical history to the general one. The entries for styles and composers are clear and easy-to-read; however, they aren`t superficial. An interesting feature is the Insides sections: some important or curious things such as Vatican Council II, Musicology, and The Ophichleide. Read and enjoy! (The author relates each point of the history with musical examples. So, pump up the volume and travel through...)

Good...not Great.......2007-03-10
The 20th Century was a very innovative time period in music. The influence of globalism and technology undeniably effected the musical atmosphere of the world in the 1900s. Yet Morgan seems far more concerned with atonalism and anti-classicism than the influence of jazz, popular music, recording technology, and even cinematography. While he does not fail to mention these influences, I believe that he did not emphasize their importances adequately. However, there is much to discuss in the world of 20th century music, and Morgan provides excellent insight into the topics that he chose to focus on. A good study of the era but not quite a great one.
Anthology of 20th Century Music.......2005-09-18
The order came very quickly. However, the discription wasn't accurate on the product. There is some staining on the last couple of pages and on one page, the last few lines have been completely cut out, as if with scissors. Overall the book is fine, but I thought it would be in better condition.
