Most histories of the international cinema focus on the careers of prominent directors. But the authors of The Oxford History of World Cinema set cinematic genres, trends, and national themes at the fore, composing a history of the cinema that is equally a history of our multifarious world culture. Still, in deference to the older historical style, the text of this hefty book is dotted with hundreds of minibiographies on individual filmmakers. The result of this hybrid approach is one of the most comprehensive film histories ever, allowing insight into its complex subject from a number of different perspectives.

Book Description

The Oxford History of World Cinema is the most authoritative, up-to-date history of the Cinema ever undertaken. It traces the history of the twentieth-century's most enduringly popular entertainment form, covering all aspects of its development, stars, studios, and cultural impact. The book celebrates and chronicles over one hundred years of diverse achievement from westerns to the New Wave, from animation to the Avant-Garde, and from Hollywood to Hong Kong, with an international team of distinguished film historians telling the story of the major inventions and developments in the cinema business, its institutions, genres, and personnel. Other chapters outline the evolution of national cinemas round the world - the varied and distinctive filmic traditions that have developed alongside Hollywood. Also included are over 140 special inset features on the film-makers and personalities - Garbo and Godard, Keaton and Kurosawa, Bugs Bunny and Bergman - who have had an enduring impact in popular memory and cinematic lore. With over 300 illustrations, a full bibliography, and an extensive index, The Oxford History of World Cinema is an invaluable and entertaining guide and resource for the student and general reader.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable guide!.......2006-11-17

Totally recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Very heady discussion of film.......2003-11-12

This book includes a large collection of writings on various film movements and styles throughout history. It touches on cinema from all continents and includes sidebars focusing on important filmmakers and their contributions to film. The book is illustrated with many black and white stills with several pages of full-color photographs in the middle.

I would recommend this book to film scholars who are interested in film theory rather than film history or casual discussion. The writings included in this book are not for light reading; they are very heady and in-depth analyses of the art of film.

I consider myself well-viewed and an intelligent film student and am always willing for good discussion about film, but I was a little disappointed with this volume. I was expecting something a little more accessible and approachable and I found this book to be a little dry. It is definitely not for the casual film buff, but for someone interested in the mechanics and the psychology of film, so be aware of this.

I have also been looking at Robert Sklar's "A World History of Film" and, judging from the less intimidating approach used by that book, think that is more of what I was looking for in this.

5 out of 5 stars A must for film students and ardent film buffs........2000-07-03

'The Oxford History of World Cinema' is an excellent reference text with contributions from well-respected academics and critics across the globe. It provides condensed versions of national cinemas, styles, and movements through different eras. What is more, a conscious effort has been made to cover well-known styles such as Italian neo-realism and the Hollywood studio system in addition to lesser known ones such as Scandanavian or Arabian cinema. Furthermore, it moves beyond national cinemas to include a diverse range of topis such as documentary, music, censorship, exploitation, animation and much more.

For those studying cinema, like myself, will find it useful as a condensed reference from which to depart into greater depths of research. Film buffs will find it useful to view films within cinematic contexts such as style, industry, and reception.

The book is divided into three main chapters: (1) Silent cinema (2) Sound cinema and (3) Modern cinema with the differnt topics aforementioned pervading throughout. In addition to this, a few hundred actors, directors, and cinematographers et al have been selected to feature in a special biography page of their own. These include notables such as Sternberg, Bunuel, DeMille, Dreyer, Ozu, Garbo, Warhol and so much more.

There are many illustrations - most of which are black and white but are stunning accompaniments nonetheless. Buy, read, enjoy and cherish it. I know I did!

4 out of 5 stars Really, offering a lot..........1999-02-04

The great title is not fake. Huge coverage of different cinema eras and national cinemas. In depth explanations of film staff. I found everything what i needed to see about world cinema.

    Book Description

Veronique Dasen here examines dwarfs in myth and everyday life in ancient Egypt and Greece. In both cultures physical beauty was highly admired, even to excess. What happened to those whose appearance did not conform to the `ideal proportion'? The spectacular forms of dwarfism were always a focus of interest, and it is the most depicted disorder in antiquity. In this study Dr Dasen brings together for the first time a whole range of mostly unpublished or little known iconographic, epigraphic, literary, and anthropological evidence. She covers areas such as the history of caricature and the portrait; medical history, in particular the development of the perception of congenital disorders; social history; and history of religion, with questions on the magical and ritual efficacy of the malformed in sacred and theatrical contexts. She considers also the complex relations between mythology and ethnography, as shown, for example, in the Greek myth of the Pygmies. This is a fascinating work, with a wealth of insights for anyone interested in the history of medicine or the ancient world.

      Book Description

This book explores the formative period of British television drama, concentrating on the years 193655. It examines the continuities and changes of early television drama, and the impact this had upon the subsequent 'golden age'. In particular, it questions the caricature of early television drama as 'photographed stage plays' and argues that early television pioneers in fact produced a diverse range of innovative drama productions, using a wide range of techniques. It also explores the often competing definitions about the form and aesthetics of early television drama both inside and outside the BBC. Given the absence of an audio-visual record of early television drama, the book uses written archive material in order to reconstruct how early television drama looked, and how it was considered by producers and critics, whilst also offering a critical examination of surviving dramas, such as Rudolph Cartier's Nineteen Eighty-Four.

              Book Description

The exciting debut of a snappy, spirited, and irresistible mystery series from beloved and bestselling author Linda Greenlaw

In her bestselling nonfiction book All Fishermen Are Liars, Linda Greenlaw confessed a desire to write fiction -- and readers responded with an enthusiastic "Please do!" At last, she satisfies their hunger with this sharp-witted, compulsively readable mystery, the first in a series featuring marine investigator Jane Bunker.

When Jane moves back to the sleepy Maine fishing community where she was born, it's to escape the seamy crime scenes and unsavory characters that crossed her path in Miami. Surely whatever crimes are committed in touristy, idyllic Green Haven won't involve anything as nasty as what she saw in Florida. It's a bit of a shock, then, when Nick Dow, the town drunk, turns up dead, and it's not the simple accident that everyone assumes it to be. Jane soon discovers that Dow wasn't even a drunk -- it was all an act. But why? And what does it have to do with a heated town hall meeting about fishing rights and paternity suits? The more Jane digs, the more confused she gets. Only two things are certain: Nothing is what it seems; and the whole town is in each other's business. But it's not until Jane impulsively hops on a boat with the killer -- a boat that suddenly heads out to sea -- that things become downright dangerous . . .

As she proved in The Hungry Ocean, no one knows the sea like Linda Greenlaw. And as she proved in The Lobster Chronicles, no one has a better way with the telling details of Maine village life. This new mystery series features everything readers want: a great setting, wonderful characters, an authentic and original detective -- and a story that will keep them on the edge of their seats.

5 out of 5 stars She Always Delivers More Than Can Be Expected.......2007-09-24

Although I was a bit cautious with this being her first fiction I was ultimately as pleased as I had been with all her previous non-fiction. I knew Linda around the Portland, ME waterfront years before she wrote her first book. She was very good with everything she ever did. I'm pleased to see she is so well received in her writing, but I can't say it surprises me. She writes "wicked good".

              4 out of 5 stars SLIPKNOT.......2007-09-24

I have enjoyed all of linda's works - this being the first Novel, I think she did quite well. I think it took me 4 nights from start to finish. She knows her way around the ocean and around ships - good job Linda - good job.

4 out of 5 stars Linda created a thrilling mystery.......2007-08-22

For her first mystery debut I thought Linda Greenlaw created a wonderful, thrilling story in "Slipknot". I just hope she continues writing in the mystery genre with Jane Bunker as the main character. I just loved the location of this story; the small fishing village of Green Haven, Maine. Memories of Cabot Cove in the TV series, Murder She Wrote, popped in my mind, but only for a moment. In the story Jane seeks a slower pace in life where violent crime is unheard of. She arrives in the quaint town of Green Haven after leaving Dade County, Florida where as a detective she witness violence of all sorts and numerous human misdeeds. However, even though she obtained a fairly safe job with an insurance company she's back in the soup again when she finds the body of Nick Dow, a cod fisherman, washed ashore. Her detective skills go into action. She believes that the man was murdered, but the police do not. Now the story takes off and when I finished the book all I can say is that Ms. Greenlaw gave me a gripping mystery with wonderful characters. The characters have depth and multiple dimensions and I'd gladly recommend this book to all my friends.

Another Mystery that is written in a highly effective and uncluttered fashion is The Monopoly Factor by Robert L. Saunders. This story of corporate, deceit, murder, and greed shows the author's abilities to plot a legal drama that is full of meat. It's a warm, but thrilling story that you can't help but cheer on Barry Foreman, his brother Noah, and Susan as they try to stay one step ahead of the evil Carl Rudd. Check it out you won't be disappointed. .

Also check out his stunning Woman's Fiction Gathering of Cans. In this radiant story you will travel with Zoie Baker, the heroine, on her quest to build a swimming pool by gathering aluminum cans. She feels right down to her bones that this is her destiny. Unique cans that she stumbles on, i.e., Nehi, Mountain Dew, etc., takes the reader on a glorious journey in the life of Zoie. The authors style is smooth and silky and this gripping story you will never forget.

              Bye, DL.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Mystery for Your Next Voyage.......2007-08-15

If you are looking for a light mystery for a beach read, this one will keep you guessing to the very end.

Jane Bunker moves from the heat of Miami to the cool shores of Green Haven, Maine to become an inspector for a marine insurance company. A twenty-year veteran homicide detective, she can't quite leave her past behind, especially when a dead body turns up her first day on the job. Although everyone is determined to shrug off the death of the town drunk as an accident, Jane can't disregard the man's bashed in skull quite as easily. While using the cover of inspecting properties for the insurance company, she covertly investigates what she calls murder.

Linda Greenlaw is a skilled mystery writer. She lays clues down and creates doubts that keep you guessing until the last pages. Unfortunately, I'm not as great a fan of the straight prose. There were many pages where I got lost in the descriptions of boats and fishing jargon. Possibly someone more well-versed in this industry would understand some of the passages better than I did, but just because she lost me does not make her a bad writer. Far from it. One passage during a storm nearly had me reaching for my motion sickness pills.

If you just want a good mystery, this is one. Just skip the sections about the fishing factory. If you know anything about oceans and the fishing industry, you'll love this book. Take it along on your next voyage and enjoy.

              2 out of 5 stars Slipknot.......2007-08-09

Having read Linda Greenlaw's first 3 novels and thoroughly enjoying them, I waited with baited breath (note the nautical terminology) for her next one. What a shock to learn, on page 1, that this was not going to be traditional Linda Greenlaw. But, hey. What the heck? Read it and see where it goes. From the very beginning I kept feeling like it had the wrong author's name on the cover. It was everything like a Sue Grafton book (key word "book," not "novel") - S is for Slipknot - and nothing like Linda Greenlaw. From one page to the next, I felt like I was on a sinking ship. Worse, still, based on her wonderful prior books, I had suggested that my book club purchase it upon publication and read it that month, which they did. Tonight at our meeting I will apologize to them.

                1 out of 5 stars not good.......2005-05-27

I did not read this book as a true fan should never look into this book. If you want to know the history of slipknot, then buy the book that was actually put out by roadrunner and authorized by the band. One reason that they started putting on the mask was to freak you out, why take away that by wanting to know what they look like. Plus, if you are a fan, then you already know what they look like from some of their side projects. Also they wear mask to make sure that punk butt kids don't bother their familys and them when they are out and about. Please, respect the band and respect their familys. Don't buy this book and be a poser.

This is an insult to all maggots and the band alike. We have heard there story many times, and it is good to hear it, but when you go and sneak pictures of them without there masks on it is disturbing there personal space! This is not a book for true maggots, it is a book for stupid people who only like to hear whats in the news and when stars are in trouble about something or another. The greatest thing about slipknot was that you didnt know what they looked like, and now the media is trying to take that away!! I advise you do NOT read this book!!!

This is just an insult to all maggots and the band. This book is just there to bother all of the band members, we have heard there story lots of times, and its good to know it. But when you go in and get the pictures of them with out there masks it is disturbing there personal space! If they wanted everyone to see what there faces look like then they would do it at a concert or a live apearence. One of the greatest things about slipknot was that you didnt know what they looked like, and now the media is trying to take that away too. I advise you to NOT read this book!!!

For all the Maggots out there, we already know their story, and what they have to say. If we wanna know something from the guys, we can just ask and what we don't know, we wont know. They're people too, just like the rest of us. Everyone deserves personal space. This book is for people that can't fathom Slipknot. We get the message and that's all the matters. The Knot will reveal themselves when they're ready, a book isn't needed. To all the true Maggots, support The Knot. (SIC)

5 out of 5 stars The return of Crambo.......2001-11-30

This is a great book about a stupendous "visual" rock band by a guy who is real rock 'n' roll writing legend, Mr. Mark Crampton (with a little help from his two worthy collaborators). What this guy doesn't know about rock'n'roll you could write on the back of a ukelele plectrum, so it's unlikely that Slipknot have slipped anything past his hawk-like gaze. I remember his incisive writing in the great early 90s rock mag, Riff Raff. Of course, he's toned down the style somewhat for the Slipknot fans, but this is still metal-to-the-pedal, hellbent-for-leather, turbo-charged rock'n'roll writing.

                Book Description

Keith L. Walker traverses the traditionally imposed boundaries of geography and race as he examines the literary culture produced by French speakers and writers born outside France. Focusing on the commonalities revealed in their shared language and colonial history, Walker examines for the first time the work of six writers who, while artistically distinct and geographically scattered, share complex sensibilities regarding their own relationship to France and the French language and, as he demonstrates, produce a counterdiscourse to their colonizers’ modern literary traditions.
Martinique, French Guyana, Senegal, Morocco, and Haiti serve as the stage for the struggle these writers have faced with French language and culture, a struggle influenced by the legacy of Aimé Césaire. In his stand against the modernist principles of Charles Baudelaire, Walker argues, Césaire has become the preeminent francophone countermodernist. A further examination of the relationships between Césaire and the writers Léon Gontron Damas, Mariama Bâ, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Ken Bugul, and Gérard Étienne forms the core of the book and leads to Walker’s characterization of francophone literature as having “slipped the knot,” or escaped the snares of the familiar binary oppositions of modernism. Instead, he discovers in these writers a shared consciousness rooted in an effort to counter and denounce modernist humanist discourse and pointing toward a new subjectivity formed through the negotiation of an alternative modernity.
Countermodernism and Francophone Literary Culture will engage readers interested in French literature and in postcolonial, Caribbean, African, American, and francophone studies.

Countermodernism and Francophone Literary Culture : The Game of Slipknot (New Americanists) by Keith L. Walker

This book, was not only interesting but also puts you into a better perspecive to look at modern culture. How the world's beliefs and feelings have changes drastically. The main point of this story is about a heavy metal band Slipknot, and angered heavy metal band highly popular by rock/heavy metal fans, as they are considered as Maggots. As a huge fan of them I believe, I may have a different opinion than someone oblivious of the band. Overall I think this book is worth its money. So, if you are ready to take on a farely challenging book and enjoy criticing the modern art of music and culture this is the book for you.

This album kicks major( ) ! It starts out as a looped sample on the first track. Then it jams right into the second song "(sic). On one of my favorite tracks"Eyeless" the chorus goes "you can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes" which fades into the album's biggest and another great one "Wait an Bleed". Throghout the whole album singer #8(or Corey Taylor) lyrically is great. With the guitar riffing, the drums ponding, the dj scrathing and samples galore; the music always is pounding with the screaming vocals, making the whole album exiting and each song is different in it's own way. No soft songs! This cd is the best cd from the first to the last!

Undoubtably one of the best cds i have heard in years..this one shreds from start to finish bolstering 15 mind splitting tracks (19 if youve managed to obtain a U.k release of the cd)which are sure to soothe the soul of heavy music enthusiasts. For me to give this one a 4 star rating is to say that it is but a small step away from absolute perfection. I can only imagine what the follow up to this one is going to be like, slipknot have certainly created a debut release that i am sure even they will have difficulties matching up to throughout their future endeavours. ..So go! ..Now! ..Run even,to your local record store and get this cd!

                    Book Description

Slipknot Unmasked was the first major biography of the band, who had risen to chart prominence since the mid 1999 release of their self-titled album. Chronologically, it deals with the band's mid 1990s formation in Iowa and reveals previously unknown facts about their origins, the author having tracked down and interviewed two founder members and the producers of their first demo. They also provided exclusive pictures of the band for this book. It covers various personnel changes that have occurred over the years, their unique image (they wear masks and overalls) and their frenzied stage antics resulting in members injuring themselves. This updated edition brings the Slipknot story right up to date detailing their activities in 2001 and 2002, including the release of their platinum album Iowa which topped the charts worldwide, and produced several singles. The various members have guested on other artists' records and big-selling side projects including Stone Sour and Murderdolls.

                    5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Interesting.......2003-11-07

Not being much of a Slipknot fan, I wasn't expecting much from this book. Fortunately I was pleasantly surprised. It's very in-depth in regards to how this band came to be & chronicles its success quite well. It provides a look into the their personal lives as well as their public persona. A sprinkling of the McIver trademark humor is always a good thing. Even though I don't much care for the band this is indeed a good read. I'm to the point now where I look forward to reading Joels books, no matter the subject.

                    this book was great, but..

it didnt show their faces enough if it did at all.
if you want a movie that shows their faces through the whole movie (just about).. i know the perfect movie.

                    but anyway..
the book was great. it kept me interested throughout the whole book. from the biginning of the bands' stardom to present day.
if you're a Slipknot fan, you should definalty get this book.
