Book Description
There’s more to the arms, artillery, and exotic equipment of the Star Wars galaxy than Jedi lightsabers and blasters. Species such as the tree-dwelling Wookiees, the amphibious Gungans, and the deadly Yuuzhan Vong have yielded a staggering array of unique weapons and devices. And as the Star Wars mythos continues to grow–in prequels and video games, on screen, in print, and beyond–these remarkable technical creations also multiply and evolve.
The
New Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology is the fully updated and greatly expanded reference resource that organizes and explains every key class, make, and model of Star Wars munitions–from the smallest personal sidearms to the most devastating interplanetary superweapons–along with a host of other high-tech paraphernalia. This exhaustive compendium includes:
• New in this edition: a fascinating look at the historical significance of Star Wars weaponry and the major technological turning points– including the Clone Wars, the creation of the first Death Star,
and the Yuuzhan Vong invasion
• A roster of the major manufacturers who created the most powerful armaments for the Old and New Republics, the Empire, the Sith, the Rebel Alliance, and all of the exotic governments that populate the Star Wars galaxy
• In-depth descriptions of more than 100 weapons and more than 100 additional devices used for defense, communication, survival, security, and more–including detailed schematics of key technology featured in all five films

Star Wars for Children?.......2007-09-10
This book is good. There are plenty of pictures, sourcing for items and where the surface in the universe, even a fairly decent description of most of them. But it didn't have the technical specifications that you would expect from a Star Wars Manual. It was lacking in a lot of fine details, and seemed ti have been made just to gloss over everything and make it look good. Ok, but not great.
They Don't make them like they used too.......2007-08-29
Nice Diagrams, a few VERY good light saber comparison pages, nice description of companies that make the weaponry but mostly underwhelming with little information or obvious information on the actually weapons as well as very poor renders of the few that were rendered. I never got the original of this book but I did have the original Essential guide to vehicle's and vessels and it was MUCH better with no render only black and white artist sketches as well as more interesting diagrams.
A job well done........2007-06-15
I was extremely pleased with what I got when I purchased this guide. It gives a detailed description of the anatomy, history, and use of every item in Star Wars. This guide is broken into sections. These are ranged weapons, melee weapons, starship and planetary weapons, superweapons, defenses and armor, security, and other equitment. The ranged weapons section covers everything from the simple dart shooter to the lethal disruptor rifle. Melee is similar, and it gives many descriptions of Yuuzhan Vong melee weapons(ugh). Starship and planetary weapons section covers many things, and the superweapons section is a very interesting section. I value this guide over the Vehicles and Vessels guide. Its setup is more structured and organized. In the beginning of this guide you can find a Major Manufacterers guide. Ian Fullwood has done an excellent job illistrating this guide. You can see everything. I strongly reccomend this guide to anyone who likes Star Wars, and it really helped me get into Star Wars. A must-have.
Nice!.......2006-11-21
Tis book expands on the weapons/technology used in the Star Wars universe, not just what's seen in the movies but also what appears in the books. The artwork/pictures in the book have been updated, they have a more realistic look to them.

Star Wars has cool guns. Whether it's the BlasTech DL-44 heavy blaster that Han Solo favors or the classic Stormtrooper sidearm, the Imperial E-11, almost every fan has their favorite. Of course, Star Wars had other cool weapons, too: everybody, at one time or another, has pretended to wave a lightsaber around while making Dopplered "WA-ow" noises. But in the movies, you don't always get a close look at what everybody's packing. That's where Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology comes in.
From Leia's wimpy "sporting" blaster to the Death Star-mounted super-laser, the Essential Guide covers it all, with meticulously labeled schematics and detail-packed descriptions. (Don't be surprised if you find yourself at Radio Shack later, looking for a "crystal lens assembly" or a "high energy flux aperture" to finish building your lightsaber.) And the book doesn't cover just weapons: when you've had enough of thermal detonators and gaffi sticks, you can check out Boba Fett's jet pack or a Marksman-H combat remote, just like the one Luke used to practice with his lightsaber on the Millenium Falcon. With weapons and technology from all the movies and many of the Star Wars novels and comics, this guide is sure to have a few of your favorites--maybe you'll even find a new one. --Paul Hughes

Horrible, stupid, pathetic book!.......2006-02-25
This book is horrible. It makes up stuff about lightsabers and how they work. When I saw this book I bought it immediatly. Little did I know that it was so stupid. First, it talks about weapons in words that you don't understand. Then it shows you the weapons that are on starships. On top of all of that it's in dull no color illustrations that look like they got it out of a drawing book. If you are a major Star Wars fan, like me, don't by it. Don't waste 20$ on it even if you aren't a fan and you like these kinds of books. This book is pathetic, DO NOT BUY IT!
Star Wars fan? THIS IS FOR YOU!.......2003-10-13
When it comes to science fiction, the Star Wars saga is the best. However, the films themselves give very little information regarding the weaponry used by their cast of characters. This is a shame, because the weapons technology of everyone's favorite galaxy far far away is nothing short of fascinating. Finally, a book entitled Star Wars - The Essential Guide To Weapons And Technology was released! Now, fans would be able to learn about the ever-so awesome implements of destruction characters in the films used! Read on for my review of this book.
PROS:
-If you're a fan of the Star Wars films, and you're interested in reading about the the weaponry characters use to destroy one another, you're going to love this book! From the lightsaber to Han Solo's trusty blaster pistol, all the weapons you've come to know and love are in here.
-The book covers the expanded universe! This means the weapons from Shadows Of The Empire appear here, as does weaponry that shows up in later novels, comic books, video games, etc. Even if you're just a fan of the films, the information on the expanded universe will fascinate you.
-This book is readily available in most major bookstores (B. Dalton, Barnes And Noble, Borders, etc.) You shouldn't have any trouble finding it.
-The price for this book is very good, considering all the information it has to offer. This is a worthwhile purchase if you're a Star Wars fan.
CONS:
-The major problem with this book is that it was released circa 1997. This means it came out before 1999, and accordingly the tools of destruction exclusive to the prequel films, Episode I and Episode II, don't appear in here. That's a shame, because I would have loved to read up on Darth Maul's double-bladed Lightsaber.
-The only pictures in the book are black-and-white sketches. I would have liked to see some more detailed pictures, preferably in color.
OVERALL:
If you're a Star Wars fan, I guarantee this book will fascinate you. If you're not a fan of the Star Wars series but know somebody who is, this makes a great gift. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
bad illustrator and author.......2001-08-11
while this book apears to be good, it realy is'nt. the autor made several mistakes in writing. one example of his mistake is when describing the Sun Crusher he says that Maw Instalation was created from funds diverted from the Death Star project when the Death Star was first created and tested at Maw Instalation. also the so called schematics are really just drawings of the outside with very little technical detail.
Good source of information.......2001-06-29
Another hit in this series, this essential guide offers you information about the weapons and technology in Star Wars. Most of it is Canon, some of it is not. However, any fan of Star Wars Information and such should not be without this book. It is replete with information and knowledge.
Guns! Guns! Guns! Oh, and some other stuff, too!.......2001-05-29
I really enjoy the Del Rey Star Wars "Essential Guides...", they are for the most part well written and generally well conceived by authors who genuinely love Star Wars. Bill Smith's work on "The Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology" is a fun tech book on everything from blasters and lightsabers to ground based turbo laser batteries, vaporators, comlinks and sensor jamming technology. The book also lists the corporations that produce the equipment people use in day to day life. I find that this tends to add a sense of realism, since no one uses entirely generic items that are provided free of charge to everyone...like on Star Trek.
The book is also well detailed with lots of art, both three-dimensional sketches and line drawings, accompany the text that describes each object. Often, in the case of unique items, Magwit's Mystifying Hoop, explain who used it and why. Unfortunately, if teleportation is so common that performers can use it in their stage acts, why isn't proliferated every where else in Star Wars? Mostly, the art is quite good, though I found a few of the personal weapons to be gimicky and/or poorly conceived of and drawn. Other than this is a great reference for Star Wars fans who might be tired of being buried under meaningless Treknobabble.

Mixed feelings.......2003-07-10
I have waited for a long time to find a copy of this at a price I could afford. Listening to the other reviews and looking at Amazons' look inside feature, what I expected was a thick paperback containing a large amount of information on all of the landmines in the inventory, and the approved EOD method for rendering them safe.
What I got was a book that barely fit on my shelf, much less a BDU pocket. It contains the notes of a well-respected gentleman that he homogenized from multiple various sources.
He states that one of the reasons for the book is that the publications for use by EOD personnel are normally not available to the deminer. In many countries, UXO personnel are not EOD people, they are conscripted from the local population. Unfortunately, many of the items do not list a method for neutralization, and the section on rendering safe is very, very, VERY generalized. The ones that do list disarming and neutralization procedures do so supposing that the reader already has attended a course of instruction in explosives disposal.
I wouldn't feel safe using the book in the field. I understand the need for classification, but nothing about landmines, which by nature are left behind to be collected for study and reverse engineering by any coutry with an interest, truly needs classification when you weigh the need of the deminer to safely remove them.
Also, possibly off topic, I would have liked to seen a greater number of submunitions listed.
In sum, the book has its' points, but it falls short of being the publication it could be. A book of this type has a very necessary place in demining operations, and with some more fleshing out, this book could fill that role.
Real information about landmines.......2000-04-19
This book is certainly a must for anyone who is involved in the task of removing the international landmine plague. It is also invaluable for those involved in research and development of new techniques for detection and landmine remediation. For those in the general public who want to understand the difficulties of the technical aspects of demining, it can be a frightening but enlightening reference.
Eddie Banks has over thirty years experience in his field. He has summed his knowledge into an amazingly usable and readable form covering every aspect of antipersonnel mine technology from a historical perspective to detailed specifications of individual mines.
The data sheets, organized by country of manufacture, provide photos, specifications, particular dangers and methods of disarming among many other pertinent facts.
For anyone, from researcher to interested reader, who wants to understand the possibilities for this weapon of terror and the possibilities for remediation, this is a must read.

Good, but not great. OVERPRICED........2000-02-28
This book is not as good as I had hoped. I think it suffers in the following areas:
1) It's got a serious Eastern Europe/former Soviet Bloc slant. This could provide a refreshing point of view, but it's hard to cover this subject well while practically ignoring such widely-used arms as the Browning M2.
2) It actually doesn't spend much time on any specific weapons, treating the subject in more of a theoretical manner. Connected with this, most of the drawings (there are no photos) are semi-schematic rather than cut-away style views of actual weapons. Some of them are a little hard to interpret, too.
3) A little bit was lost in the translation. The authors do not always use what I believe to be the standard U.S. terminology. They use "weapon casing" for "receiver" and a couple other odd ones.
4) This book is fairly packed full of complicated-looking mathematical formulas. I suppose such things are essential to modern scientific small arms design, but to me they make boring reading. I also doubt that John Browning or "Carbine" Williams ever took such an egg-headed approach to things.
5) Speaking of "Carbine" Williams, I don't see anything in this book about floating chambers. Also nothing about the principles and advantages of the high/low pressure system for small arms use. I think there's a lot of odds and ends missing from here that would be important for a well rounded understanding of the small arms field.
These things said, I guess if I didn't have this book now I would still want to get it.
EDIT: It's almost two years now since I purchased this book, and I see the price has risen dramatically from the already-high 60 bucks or so I paid for it. In my judgement, it is simply no way worth the current price unless you are so hardcore that you simply must have every word written on this subject. I would recommend getting the book, "U.S. Army Weapons Command Technical Notes -- Small Arms Design" published by Armalite. It sells for about [...], and covers quite similar material.
Good overview of small arms design, lots of formulas.......1998-08-09
As a broad treatise on small arms design this volume generally succeeds. It does not include every possible design, but has good coverage of the important ones. Since the main contributors are Czech it's particularly strong on East bloc designs including a few obscure ones, which is an interesting contrast with most Western writings.
This book may have origins in a collection of articles but has been well-edited to create a relatively coherent whole. The writing and grammar are generally clear. There are a few places where the language (translations?) is a bit garbled, but the meaning is usually discernable.
Arms design generally moves so slowly (compared, say to computers) that I'd say the content is reasonably current. For example, the coverage of modern Gatling designs is probably fresh enough to provide insight into current models.
My overall impression is that the scope and background are reasonabl! y broad and technical information is strong. There are lots of detailed formulas describing the physics involved. Given all this and the general difficulty in obtaining good information on small arms design, I recommend this title highly.

Product Description
This hardcover collects the three books, Characters, Weapons & Technology, and Vehicles & Vessels, into one easy to use reference on the Star Wars universe.
Book Description
"This is the book that every Brian Jones fan has been waiting for, the most sensitive and honest portrait of Brian yet. Finally justice is done."-The Official Brian Jones Fanclub
?
"An intelligent, lyrical exploration of Jone's complex psyche and persona."-The Washington Post
?
"Jeremy Reed offers a new slant on things... A study of Jones as a decadent."-Uncut
?
Brian Jones, rock 'n' roll godstar; founder member of the Rolling Stones, the murdered androgyne whose fragile psyche was ultimately broken by an industry which, nonetheless, provided him with the means to luxuriate in the bizarre and unorthodox.
?
Jones's alcohol and drug excesses, his tormented and often psychotic states, his dandified propensity to cross-dress, his love of literature, privileged background and expensive speaking voice all placed him in the decadent tradition, the last of a rarefied aesthete's lineage. His tragic murder at the age of twenty seven further substantiated his place in the Byronic legend of the chosen one who dies young.
?
In Brian Jones: The Last Decadent, author Jeremy Reed locates in Jones's obsessive fantasy world a terrain firmly aligned with the opium visions of Charles Baudelaire, the sartorial extravagence of Oscar Wilde, the sybaritic indulgences of Count Stenbock. Reed vividly recolours Brian Jones's brief, but incandescent and extraordinarily subversive life amidst the pop and fashion whirlwind of the Sixties, and in doing so presents perhaps the most illuminating and evocative portrait yet written of a fallen rock 'n' roll angel.
?
Includes 16 pages of photographs.

Falsehoods and untruths - buy a book based on the facts of Brian's life and not a fantasy........2006-10-28
This is the worst book about Brian ever. It is a thesis and the author's opinions. It is based on Nicholas Fitzgerald's book that was fiction and embellishment! There are better and more current books about Brian's murder. As far as the author projecting that Brian was bisexual or repressed that is nonsense! People alluding to that only want to sell books because sensationalism sells. When Brian was arrested for cannabis he was made to take a psychological profile - the results of which were disclosed, stating that he was HETEROSEXUAL. Many other men dressed in the dandy fashion of the time that Brian made famous and they weren't written about and compared to Lord Byron or the complex Oscar Wilde. When he was kicked out of England for impregnating a girlfriend at sixteen and went to Germany, Scandanavia etc. his parent's sent him money and many women cared for him, along with singing on corners for change. Mr. Reed would have you believe Brian hustled for men to support himself... Ridiculous and not factual!! He was there for barely 3 months, when his money ran out he went home. Brian himself told his friends about those days and hustling was not a part of them, I'm tired of people trying to cast aspersions on his sexuality, when former girlfriends and many friends including former bandmate Bill Wyman state emphatically Brian was straight. Also many poets and musicians, celebs in the 60's supported the gay rights movement, it didn't mean they were. Brian has children and grandchildren and I'm sure they don't like hearing him being trashed and lied about in order to sell books. He was no saint and he was not always nice to his girlfriends nor the best father, but he was very young (remember he died at 27, but deserves better than this book). I dont care if anyone agrees or not, but the people who were close to Brian and are not former friends trying to sell tell-all books (including some shameless rock celebs) truly remember him. This fantasy book along with it's Nicholas Fitzgerald predecessor deserve no stars!
Brian Jones: A Powerful PISCES & Musical Vissionary!.......2002-04-14
... This book about the life, death, and character of Brian Jones is absolutely as beautiful as it is chilling! ... Jeremy Reed has the gifted ability to transcend time and space and bring us right into the heart and soul - and life circumstances at the time of his death - of Brian Jones, founder and one-time leader of The Rolling Stones. ... I do not know if the conclusion of this book is true: that Brian Jones was killed and murdered in the swimming pool at his own country home by a group of bloody blockheads who were friends with employees of the Rolling Stones organization; but after reading this book, Bill Wyman's STONE ALONE, and the most recent OLD GODS ALMOST DEAD (about The Rolling Stones, by Stephen Davis), there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Brian Jones' death was no accident! ... I was pissed after reading this book! Pissed, and sad. ... Where in the hell were the other Rolling Stones within hours of this happening to Brian, and why did they NOT insist on a thorough, precise, and intense investigation into his death?! THIS question haunts me MORE than if Brian was murdered or died of "misadventure;" MORE than if Brian was heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual; and even MORE than if he, indeed, was getting his act together and on the verge of forming another great band. (On the last postulation, I have no doubt!). ... So, the real question to ask is: If Brian Jones was murdered, WHY was Brian murdered - and more importantly - to WHOSE BENEFIT would it be to see Brian dead? ... RIGHT?! ... 1969 was a bad year: The Beatles broke-up, Brian Jones "died," and The Rolling Stones had to suffer their own DEGREE OF MURDER (indeed!) during Altamont. ... The Beatles and The Stones had a lot in common, but especially astrologically. Both bands had a combination of 2 trines and 2 squares. In the Beatles, Lennon (Libra) and McCartney (Gemini) were both trined AIR signs, whereas Harrison (Pisces) and Starr (Cancer) were both trined WATER signs. Also, Lennon was "squared" to Starr, and McCartney was "squared" to Harrison. ... In the Stones, Jones (Pisces) and Wyman (Scorpio) were both trined WATER signs, whereas Jagger (Leo) and Richards (Sagittarius) are both trined FIRE signs. Jones was "squared" to Richards, and Wyman was "squared" to Jagger. The 5th member of The Stones, Charlie Watts (a Gemini), is "opposite" Richards, "sextiled" to Jagger, "inconjunct" to Wyman, and ALSO "squared" to Jones. THIS made Brian the odd man out, with a DOUBLE-SQUARE against him!! Oppositions are no picnic, but they harbour a certain degree of respect. Squares, on the other hand, can be VERY disrespectful. ... This book sheds much light on the sensitive soul of Brian Jones. Pages 29 and 94 also have some very inuitively perceptive and right-on remarks about serious sociological realities in modern capitalist societies; realities that - as a true artist - Brian found himself at odds with. Yet, unlike Jagger & Richards - who tried to bribe their way out of jail - when Brian got busted the first time, he honestly and openly admitted that the pot and / or hash - and ONLY that - were his. He did not lie! He may have been a petty thief at times, an irresponsible parent, and an abusive misogynist - to say nothing of his alcohol abuse - but he was honorable, dignified, and true to his artistic and individualistic spirit till the end. ... He loved music. Brian Jones was a Dionysiac Adonis and a Lord of The Muse, who he served with all his heart and soul. ... This book sheds light on the truth. If you love Brian Jones, if you love The Rolling Stones, and if you love the music that inspired them all to devote their lives to it, then you MUST read this short, but very insightful, book by Jeremy Reed. It is truly a labor of love. - The Aeolian Kid.

Brian Jones gets his comeuppance!.......2000-05-10
After years of people making excuses for the behavior of the beautiful Brian Jones, someone has finally written a book that gives a nod to his magnificent talent and style. Writing from a socialogical point of view, Reed comments on Brian's place in history comparing him to Quentin Crisp and Oscar Wilde. If there had to be a complaint it would be Marianne Faithful as a source. The woman was way too stoned to remember anything clearly. This is an interesting companion piece to Nicholas Fitzgerald and Anna Wohlin's memories of Brian Jones. Reed didn't KNOW Jones personally, but he did understand him. A very worthwhile read.
