The colorful artwork in this book really gives you an idea of the development that a film like "Monsters, Inc." goes through to get to the screen. It is also inspiring because it shows that art in film specifically is a genesis -- and can be very collaborative.

I'm a Pixar fan and I'm working on collecting all the "Art of" books. So far I have this Monster's Inc. one and Finding Nemo. What's odd about these books is that they are all pretty different. Some contain more commentary than others and the concept art is drawn in different styles. This book has very little commentary and it is in the style of a very cartoony modern art. Finding Nemo on the other hand, has a lot of commentary to take you into the minds of the artists. The Finding Nemo book is also in a more realistic style and a lot of it is charcoal drawings.
So it depends on the type of person you are to tell which "Art of" book to buy. Monster's Inc is a lot more colorful and i feel it's more exciting because you can really see the development of the characters and setting and the gradual changes to what you see in the movie. I really enjoyed this book and I find myself flipping through it over and over again even though I read the whole thing in one sitting when I first received it. It's an amazing addition to any artist and Pixar fan.

This book is full of wonderful, imaginative illustrations that show the time and effort that was placed into Monsters Inc. The numerous different illustrators that have provided work make this collection of images a delight. There is very little text and explanation to go along with the images, but this is exactly what I was looking for. Its interesting to see how many changes the characters appearances went through to reach the final animated film. A definite buy for any fan of Pixar.

What's surprising is that in this book there is hardly any screenshots or CG graphic art. But that's what makes the book great! It really proves that computer does not dominate in the animation industry; everything is still from sketches and traditional works. The book filled with great works from Eggleton (director of "For the Bird") and many other amazing script illustrators. The only thing that is disappointing is that most of the images are already available in the Monsters Inc. DVD. Overall, no animator should miss this book! Don't want to miss those amazing prints!

This book is very well designed. Inside there is a sticker book, and a booklet that has spaces for stickers. You put the correct stickers next to the captions and sort of build the story with the stickers. However, the stickers can last more than once. You can peel them off their spots and put them anywhere you like. It includes over 60 colorful stickers. A good buy.

This books doesnt just give you a bunch of monsters to copy,it actually lays out a total creative process for creating your own unique monster concepts. This fact immediately puts it ahead of most of the 'Draw Manga' books in that it doesn't just give you a list of stylistice tips but a whole way of thinking about the subject.

The monster types in this book basically allow you do do a lot of mixing and matching (some examples were an Elephant with a Bulldozer, a human with a hercules beetle, a squid with a shrimp a crab and a stag beetle, and a Kaiju-fied lemur-esque monster with spikes on its tail... trust me when I say that THIS one is a LOT cooler looking than I've described it). Overall, this book allows for the artist to really use their head, as well as their creativity with some of these astonishingly terrifying, and sometimes cute or cool-looking monsters (the Pet Monsters, as this book calls them).
I'd recommend it to anyone willing to think outside the typical anime norm.

This cute book is just right for younger readers: large and short (which makes it easy to hold), and also crammed full of brightly colored illustrations. First off, the book starts out with the monsters (Sulley, Mike, Boo (Ok, not really a monster), Waternoose, Randall, Roz and Celia), then it goes into the Scarers, the Scare Assistants, the Wranglers (Smitty and Needleman), the Scare Floor, Door Stations, the Simulator Room, the C.D.A., Boo's room, Sulley's apartment, and finally ends with Monstropolis. Each item above is described, with informative and funny sidebars, and many cute and colorful pictures.
I bought this book for my nephew, who absolutely loves it! If you have a little reader who loves the movie Monsters, Inc., then you must buy this book. I highly recommend it!

This one is not "just for kids". The rather thin tome illustrates and provides enticing information on the production and its wonderful characters. This is an absolutely necessary supplement to the book, "The Art of Monsters,Inc", as this publication presents the characters in their finished forms and not merely as "concept art".

Have you been lying awake at night wondering what Boo's real name is? Perhaps you've been wondering how old Henry J. Waternoose was when he took over the company of Monsters, Inc. Or maybe you just want to know where Mike buys those REALLY big contact lenses.
Puzzle no longer. All these questions are answered in this wonderful and entertaining guide to Disney & Pixar's awesome animated movie. Each page of the book is filled with pictures of the monsters from the film, and is filled with all new facts that were not even revealed in the movie!
For example, on Sulley's page, we learn how the big blue guy met his best friend, Mike. It also tells us who's holding the current Scaring record that Sulley and Randall are racing to beat! Celia's page reveals the names of the snakes that make up her hair, and tells us that she and Mike won a seven-legged race together at a company picnic.
I would tell you more, but I don't wanna spoil everything this great book has to offer. I will, however, tell you my only complaint: Why doesn't Yeti have a page that tells us why he's been exiled?

This booklet (only 8 pages long) is ok for giving you some starting chords to play simple tunes with. In fact, there are only 3 pages of chords and 5 pages of information about guitar tuning, guitar fret notes, common chord combo's, and basic guitar positioning.
You can easily get this info on the internet. I'd suggest getting a more comprehensive book on chords or a guitar method book.

Recently got First Stage Guitar Chord Chart by Chris Lopez and Essentials by Bruce Arnold. I'm a weekend geetar picker just getting started. I'm mostly interested in learning chords and scales. I thought both books were good they both gave simple presentations of the most important chords and scales. Essentials has an interesting quark in that you can download videos and mp3 files that go with various parts of the book. I found the mp3 files to be very useful to jam over but I'm over here on a dial up connection so couldn't use the video stuff that much. One thing I did watch though was movies about common problems found with each chord. It showed me all the common problems people have when learning chords and I thought that was pretty cool. Ya really can't go wrong with either book though - they lay everything out very clearly and are enjoyable to work with.

You can't go wrong his books! They're straight and to the point, but easy enough for the beginners. I play seven different instruments, all self taught and the guitar is the hardest instrument that I have ever tried to master. This man's books have made that goal a lot easier. If you don't to spend a lot of money on lessons, then just buy his books and practice, practice, practice! Did you know that most musicians out there are self taught? It's true and I'm living proof!!!

Very useful quick reference tool, specially for begginers. The "chord progression" explanation are no big deal, it could be more specific. A good reference anyway. :D
Should be called "Arpeggio Chart".......2000-04-13
By "chords" they don't mean "double stops" (i.e., playing two or more notes simultaneously). They mean the notes which make up the standard chords. The chart has all of the 12 notes, and the most common chords for each one (major, minor, dom 7th, etc.) Next to each of these is just a picture of a fretboard section with dots over the notes that make up that chord, and that's it! I think charts made like this are redundant. I mean, if you know how to play a G7arpeggio, all you have to do is shift all the fingering up two frets to get the A7 arpeggio. You don't need to copy the same picture 12 times, with an indication of which fret the root is on in each picture! The only way I could see a chart like this helping with playing chords, is that it lets you see which notes are in each arpeggio, and you can pick and choose which notes from there to include when you play your chord.
On the back cover is some miscellaneous outlined music theory, but there are one or two mistakes. Plus I don't agree with some lines like "The Dorian scale is one of the most popular scales of rock."
If you really want to help your playing, I would suggest learning some shiftable positions for arpeggios, and using them to make your OWN chart.

What's great about Bruce Arnold's books is that you can email him questions and he actually responds. This is a great book and the help files online are really useful.
Useful Collection of Information.......2005-01-11
This is a rather odd book in that it is simply a collection of pieces of useful information found exactly as they appear in other Bruce Arnold books. What makes this book so useful is that it turns out that this book (actually more of a booklet) contains exactly the information that I most commonly reference back to in his other books. Mr. Arnold presents a system of music education that is unique as far as I can tell. I have seen no other system that provides the professional level of information, a members-only web site with a plethora of additional information AND e-mail access to the author. Yup, Mr. Arnold will personally answer your questions and you get access to the "members only" web site simply by purchasing any of his books. Every time I look at the web site, I find MORE information that either presents a new topic or clarifies something I have been struggling with.
I don't think that this book would be all that useful in and of itself. However, as an adjunct to the rest of his books on theory and technique it is an extremely handy collection of most commonly accessed information. Basically, it is the collection of "notes" that I would have eventually put together for myself so that I did not have to keep referencing multiple books for the same information over and over (because I forgot it or just "wanted to check to be sure").
This is a great collection of information if you are already using Mr. Arnold's books to learn to play guitar. It was money well spent. It just saved me the time of collecting the information (as well as figuring out what would be most useful). It is already done for you.
