Book Description
"To me, bad taste is what entertainment is all about. If someone vomits watching one of my films, it's like getting a standing ovation."
Thus begins John Waters's autobiography. And what a story it is. Opening with his upbringing in Baltimore ("Charm City" as dubbed by the tourist board; the "hairdo capital of the world" as dubbed by Waters), it covers his friendship with his muse and leading lady, Divine, detailed accounts of how Waters made his first movies, stories of the circle of friends/actors he used in these films, and finally the "sort-of fame" he achieves in America. Complementing the text are dozens of fabulous old photographs of Waters and crew. Here is a true love letter from a legendary filmmaker to his friends, family, and fans.
Customer Reviews:
inteligent and entertaining.......2005-11-03
Before reading Shock Value, I'd read John's other book - Crackpot - and found it to be extremely witty and insightful. He seems very humble and able to communicate with anyone. I like this book Shock Value, however I am giving it 4 stars b/c I would rather not see images and snapshots. I'd rather just have had a full book I could read. Also, I didn't find his career-oriented to be interesting.
The Filthiest Person Alive.......2005-09-17
John Waters is fantastic. His true talents are not in his films, but in his writing. He can take the mundane and make it extraordinary, the creepy and strange and make it funny, and the ugliest of the ugly and make them things of beauty. Though he's an old man now, and his movies have gone mainstream, this book is a look back at his hilarious youth and all the mischief making that made him and the Dreamland cast stars.
This book covers the making of all his films, the biographies and interviews with his famed cast members, as well as his inpirations (ex. Rus Meyer). You enjoy their antics and feel as if you are right along side them in the making of their hilarious movies and tasteful adventures in bad taste. You can't put it down and are actually laughing out loud as you read. And he even writes about his family. How punk rock!
One thing he taught me to do was to love my hometown. People never seem to like their hometowns, whether they are in the most flashy of cities or the tiniest one horse town. Life is what you make of it, and John put the hairdo capital of the world (Baltimore) on the map with his hijinx and adoration of all things weird and wonderful. He takes his enemies and makes them into glowing monsters we can all throw rotten tomatos at in his absence. The creepy weirdos aren't monsters, they're glorious, misunderstood creatures we are to embrace. Look for the scariest, craziest places and have the most rip roaring time with the clientele. I've taken his advice and now have the ability to talk to anyone, because there are loads of lonely lunatics out there just dying to be friends with you.
Freak Power.......2005-08-30
Much impressed by the gonzo grotesqueries of "Pink Flamingos," I picked up this book to learn more about the mind behind the madness. I wasn't disappointed-- you get John Waters' strange youth and the stories behind his early freak film experiments in the 1970s. Some of my favorite quotes:
"Parents should worry if their children haven't been arrested by the time they turn sixteen. Being a juvenile delinquent is a birthright and as much a part of a healthy adolescence as smoking cigarettes or getting pimples."
"Whenever I hear a friend casually mention an interest in a sporting event, I immediately reconsider our friendship. . . . All sports are contemptible."
I absolutely love how compleletely unconcerned young Waters was with societal expectations. While most young boys worry about grades, sports, or the pretty girl, young Waters fetishized the street-fighting bad girls and ditched school to drop acid and watch trashy low-budget horror films. And best of all, his alternative education seems to have worked out wonderfully for him, as he gathers an appreciative cult of like-minded freaks around him and takes the world of underground cinema by storm!

I Couldn't Stop Laughing.......2003-06-19
This book was without a doubt the funniest book I've ever read. Naturally, readers familiar with his movies will get the most out of this book, but there's a lot in there even for those who can't sit through one of his movies. I especially like Waters's tales of his mischief as a lad attending Catholic school. Considering the time, his educational background, and the Baltimore environment, I can really understand how Waters turned out the way he did.
Delightful, distasteful, nauseating and fun!.......2002-06-05
This book is impossible to describe in one word. It's no surprise that Water's life is funnier, and more bizare then any of his films can ever hope to be. We learn about Baltimore life, his childhood, Divine, Edith Masey, Pink Flamingos,Desperate Living, and more. THIS needs to be his next film project! The only thing sad about this book is that it feels dated at certain parts (especially when it refers to Divine in the present tense, since this was written before he died...and before Cookie Muller died...and Edith Masey). But it remains a fascinating read that really encourages people to feel grateful for living in Baltimore(or makes you wish you lived there).
very very funny.......2001-11-29
Out of maybe a few hundred, this is probably the funniest book I have ever read. I remember reading it late at night in my parents house, trying to stifle my laughter so I wouldn't get in trouble for waking people up. "...a cry went up from the sleaze-mavens"
With this book, you could argue that John Waters is a better writer than he is a film maker.
inspiration.......2000-03-16
I finished Shock Value only moments ago, and i feel like i should go to baltimore and fall on my knees worshipping Waters and the crew. i thought i was weird...This book focuses on the early years and has truly inspired me to raise myself above the boring muck of semiconformist existence. READ IT
Intriquing look at Waters' life and career.......1999-09-18
Shock Value is like Waters' autobiography, mainly focused on his film career. There are only two chapters about his childhood. The book will be very interesting to every Waters fan as it provides in depth looks at the making of several of his earlier films. The book's material is dated, however, since it was written before he completed "Polyester". Waters' updates you in the new introduction though. It is very clean and has few curse words, unlike Waters' films, but is still good. I recommend it.

Book Description
A small square of paper measuring six by six inches is the unprepossessing starting point for origami, the nearly two-thousand-year-old Japanese art of paper folding. From this modest material beginning, the origami master creates objects of fascinating intricacy and beauty--flying cranes and hopping frogs, complex geometric shapes and fruit forms--following the unwritten rule of never using scissors or glue. The ancient craft of origami came into a new stage of its long life in the 1990s as renowned galleries and museums began collecting the medium, gradually elevating it to the status of contemporary sculpture. This richly illustrated volume of full-color plates presents outstanding works by 60 masters of origami from 16 different countries. Contributing authors explore the fascinating diversity and complexity of the art of paper-folding in texts devoted to its history, the use of exquisite, handmade paper, folding techniques, and the role of origami as a source of inspiration for contemporary designers, architects, and artists, as well as its increasing importance in theorem solving and concept development within the fields of science and medicine.

History of the Surrealist Movement
ASIN: 377571524X
Release Date: 2005-03-15 |
Book Description
While Surrealism became unfashionable in Europe in the 1930s, it enjoyed increasing popularity across the Atlantic at the same time. Surrealism USa, the catalogue to the exhibition at the National Academy of Design, Surrealism USA, traces the history of this movement in the United States from the 1930s to the 1950s by examining its manifestations throughout the country--from Social Surrealism and California Post-Surrealism to Magic Realism and the beginning of Abstract Expressionism. It chronicles the wide influence of Dal' on American art, the Surrealists' response to war and fascism, and the relationship between Surrealism and abstract art. With over 100 paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings, this definitive survey brings together the work of American artists like Joseph Cornell, Peter Blume, Kay Sage, Isamu Noguchi, Arshile Gorky, and Jackson Pollock--with that of Europeans in exile during World War II, including Salvador Dal', Yves Tanguy, Andra Masson, and Max Ernst.

Museum Quality.......2005-09-05
I was fortunate enough to see the Surrealism USA exhibit on tour in Phoenix in July. The collection was astounding. I found this book in the Phoenix Art Museum Store, however, $50 seemed like a lot to spend on a book while on a weekend vacation. I was thrilled to find it on Amazon for much less. The book is beautiful, the photographs are museum print quality and oversized, mostly one or two on each page. The book contains a thorough history of the surrealism movement in the United States during the last century. I would not hesitate to purchase it again.

Customer Reviews:
Positve mechandise- good pictures - but recycled info.......2007-04-02
It is refreshing to see new and positive Michael Jackson merchandise on the market. This book is also linked to charity which is also nice to see. The only problem is that a lot of the information(stats, discography etc..) has been used in other documentary style books. Other than that it's a really nice book.
This book is full of nothing........2007-03-15
Dont waste your money on this book. Even if you are a true MJ fan like myself. This book is full of useless information and pointless drivel. There is nothing interesting at all about this book.
A nice photobook.......2006-06-22
I just purchased this book, believing I was going to receive a beautiful glossy paper book with stunning pictures. Well not exactly. There is a fair number of never before seen pictures that come straight from MJJ Productions, Inc, but unfortunately the printing is rather poor. Most pictures are in black & white, and the ones in colour don't come out so well. Moreover, I think it would be important to mention that the book is not in A4 format, as one would assume, it is slightly smaller, however larger than A3 format.
There are scans of some nice letters that Michael Jackson faxed to various fan clubs to thank them for their dedication and support. The book mainly includes interviews and stories from some fans who have been involved in the fan community and have collaborated with MJ's team on several occasions. It's mostly about the fans' rapport to Michael and doesn't include many interesting and unknown MJ facts, though.
But to be fair, it is a lovely and well put-together fanbook, nothing fancy in my opinion, but the rare pictures are all well-worth the look. Plus, according to the book makers' website (chosentoentertain.com), all proceeds will go to Hurricane Katrina Relief, so that's a great thing. I'm happy I bought it, and I'd like to say this is a sweet initative by Luigi Pedone & Rossella Fazio, well done!
Aims to Please.......2006-05-07
This is a wonderful book with never before seen photos of Michael, interviews with Laurent Hopman, Deborah Dannelly, head of MJFC and her experiences with Michael. Not to mention the MJFC and the American Response Team, along with the patriarch of the Jackson family, Joseph Jackson, who spent much of time feeding the victims of New Orleans. Their response and dedicated hard work, in pulling together in unity to help out families in the Katrina Disaster, was the most compelling of all.
Yet "Chosen to Entertain" gives fans a jam packed issue of poetry, art, and exclusive interviews you don't want to miss out on. Such as Navi, Adrian Grant, Karen Faye and Enzo.
Not to mention, Jenna Pal puts her flava into the mix with her true to life story of a little African child's dream ...you'll have buy the book to find out what this is about.
A special thanks goes out to Luigi Pedone and Rossella Fazio and all the CTE members for their hard work and putting this together. Special thanks for for all those that contributed their stories and time to make this a piece of labor well worth it.
Gracious
Ciao

Book Description
Seventy percent of all change initiatives fail. Why? We don't establish essential elements--such as the right project team configuration or sufficiently frequent milestone reviews--before launching a transformation program. Pressured to demonstrate results quickly, we skip crucial steps in the change process; for example, creating short-term wins that build momentum for subsequent successes. Sometimes we wrongly assume that change is all about improving financial results--stock price, profitability, sales. We forget that successful transformation also generates "soft" benefits, such as trust, new organizational capabilities, and emotional commitment among employees. But even if we strive for financial and nonfinancial results, additional perils await: painful emotions that boil up in our workforces whenever we ask people to think or do things differently. Whether it's anger, alarm, or confusion, we must ease those feelings by cultivating an environment of trust and empowerment. Nothing about leading change is easy. But this Harvard Business Review Article Collection offers ideas for tackling the biggest challenges--and avoiding the most dangerous pitfalls.
