Book Description

Throughout her celebrated career as an actress, from her film debut as a Bond Girl to her starring role in the beloved television series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, and during the winding course of her life, Jane Seymour has been a testament to the rewards of embracing life's challenges eagerly and gracefully. Speaking from fifty-two years of experience with both joy and heartache, she firmly believes that "when we allow ourselves to see all changes as remarkable, some extraordinary things can happen to us."

Rich in lived wisdom, Remarkable Changes revolves around seven signposts of change -- stops we all visit, and perhaps revisit, on the turbulent voyage of life. Jane reflects on the life-altering events of her past and on their universal lessons. While candidly recounting her own defining moments of turmoil -- rejection, betrayal, divorce, near bankruptcy, and near-death experiences among them -- she introduces extraordinary men and women who have courageously navigated the most formidable changes, from the loss of a child to sudden blindness, as well as those who have made incredible changes happen against the odds.

Drawing on her own life and the shining examples of others -- including her indomitable mother, a native of Holland who was held in a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II; her husband, James Keach, who restored her faith in love and trust in men after a painful divorce; and her "soul mate," Christopher Reeve, who won her heart in the cult classic Somewhere in Time -- she offers a wealth of guidance for successfully managing any journey of transition.

Heartfelt and uplifting, Remarkable Changes is a welcome companion that will help us find the true value in our life's passages.

2 out of 5 stars Failed Marriages and a Life of Privilege to teach others.......2005-07-30

I was sorely disappointed. The title and book jacket verbage make this sound like an outstanding read but I found it a tale of failed marriages and I felt sorry for Seymour and her choices but I hardly find it a model to teach from. Somehow I missed the lessons of the reviewers but then she is from the Hollywood crowd and they sing each others praises. A nice lady I'm sure but I found it more about her than about the lessons.

5 out of 5 stars Touching account of a remarkable woman.......2004-02-27

I never thought much of Jane Seymour, other than to think
she was a pretty actress . . . her book, REMARKABLE
CHANGES, certainly gave me a different
perspective.

It is a touching account of how she has embraced change, as
well as such life-altering events as rejection, betrayal, divorce,
near bankruptcy, and near-death experiences . . . I liked how
she was quite candid about her life . . . in addition, she
movingly told many other stories about others who have had
to deal with such tragedies as the loss of a child and sudden
blindness.

I especially liked a section toward the end, in which she described
a tradition her parents taught her:

As little girls we were always encouraged to count our blessings.
Of course what that implies is that no matter what happens, there
are always blessings among the day's events to be counted.
In my mind, that's what we do when we look for the gifts that change can
bring. The last thing I do every night-and have done all my life-is think
over what's happened that day, and what I think is going to happen, and
then to think of how grateful I am for the things that have happened. I've
taught my own children to do the same, and it's a lovely little ritual I often
complete with my twins. And I love feeling that I can pass to my children
the wonderful, enriching traditions my parents taught to me. Nice end to
the day, actually.

There were several other memorable passages; among them:
All these difficulties have taught me something. As a result of
feeling left out and separate, and later of losing my passionate
dream of dancing, I began to see that although we don't always
have a choice in what happens to us, we really do have a choice
in how we react to what's happened. My reaction to being
excluded was that I retreated into working hard at what I did.
At the Arts Educational School, my parents couldn't afford the
education I was getting. I was on a partial grant, and I was so
incredibly grateful to be allowed to study what I loved rather than
cope with regular school that I did not want to waste one second of
my life and wanted to prove it to be the right choice. It's a feeling
that's carried over to my life today. How grateful I am to live in
the moment.

When I was fighting my weight, years ago when I was in my twenties, I
used another trick. I realized that the more I thought about the situation,
the worse I got. The more I felt I had put myself on a diet, the more I
obsessed about food, or rather, about not having food. However, I found
that if I put knitting needles in my hands, or if I was embroidering, or
even now, if I'm painting, my hands are busy, and it doesn't occur to me
to put something in my mouth. When my mind is focused on being creative,
the time flies by, and suddenly I think, "Oh my goodness, I haven't eaten
anything for three hours."

When she [her mother] returned home and the diagnosis was made,
she went right to work on a will. Contrary to what most of us would
think, Corinna said, "It was a wonderful, extraordinary exercise. Like
being Santa Claus!" I can believe that because I've watched my
mother do the same thing, with great joy. At eighty-eight years
of age, she lives every day to the fullest, taking advantage
of every opportunity and invitation that comes her way, but at the
same time she's aware that she won't be here forever. Consequently
she's been quite literally gathering up the gifts she has in her life
and then slowly handing out treasures she's collected and things
she knows we'll value. She's been doing this for the last few years-we've
received things like my first ballet shoes or a dance outfit I wore as a girl,
an exercise book from school, an award my father received. My mother
is such a giving person, she derives great pleasure in sharing these gifts,
while she's well, alive, and vibrant enough to take part in the excitement
with us.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable Revelation.......2003-04-30

Live in the moment. You can't take anything with you when you go except the imprint you leave behind in the lives of others. If you are struggling with something in your life, go out and help someone else.

All of these are pieces of advice for turning life's challenges into opportunities, the subtitle of REMARKABLE CHANGES.

For years, Jane Seymour has always been viewed as having the "perfect life." She's had 30+ successful years in the film industry, is happily married, has 4 children and 2 stepchildren, and seems to spin gold with everything she touches, including a clothing line, a worldwide art career, a new housewares collection, a children's clothing line and several published books.

However, appearances can be deceiving. So it is with Seymour. As she shares in this memoir, the life behind the smiling woman you've seen on TV is far from perfect. Although some might classify this book as self-help, it is more appropriately categorized in the autobiography section. Seymour uniquely combines personal stories with advice for an entertaining result full of heartwarming honesty and down-to-earth anecdotes.

Complete with 20 stories from friends and family who have triumphed over their adversities, REMARKABLE CHANGES offers fresh insight into the realities of life, told in a way that makes you feel more like you're sitting down to tea with Jane than delving into a personal counseling session.

Mirroring the quilting circles of days gone by, Seymour stresses the importance of sharing your struggles with others to help you get past whatever is holding you down. No stranger to setbacks, she details the pain of her divorces, her frightening near-death experiences and the ups and downs of her acting career. Through it all, Seymour writes about attitude being what makes or breaks you as you deal with the changes in your life. You are the one who decides how you'll react to whatever life throws your way and whether you'll have stepping stones or stumbling blocks.

So, be prepared for a journey of discovery and enlightenment, coupled with the 'fireside chat' voice of Jane Seymour as you learn about your own REMARKABLE CHANGES.

Another great beginner's book from Madeline MacNeil, explaining every aspect of playing the hammered dulcimer. From detailed discussions on dulcimer layout, hammers, tuning, and stands to extensive performance notes on every tune-this book provides a wealth of information for all students of the hammered dulcimer. From Oh Suzanna to Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, Madeline shows the novice dulcimer player how to "map your way through" a new piece of music, finding clear, musical directions through what at first must seem like a maze of strings. All tunes are in standard notation. The book's 87 pages are illustrated with photos as well as quaint woodcuts, engravings, and pen and ink drawings. The companion 85-minute DVD contains essential basic information on playing the hammered dulcimer--such as tuning, major and minor keys, duplicated notes, repeated notes, modulations, walking bass lines, chromatic notes, drone harmony, back-up chords, interval harmony, and more! ! Also contains Madeline MacNeil's hammered dulcimer solos on 25 tunes. CD included.

5 out of 5 stars nicely organized.......2007-09-08

After seeing videos of hammered dulcimers on versious websites, I decided I would give it a try. But Before purchasing this instrument I wanted to see if I could indeed learn it using the book and accompanied DVD. I have only begun looking at the DVD but so far I think it is a great introduction to this instrument.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome for Beginners.......2006-01-14

As an absolute beginner in learning the Hammered Dulcimer I looked at many books that were focused on the beginner... This is by far the best of the bunch... The primary thing that makes this book special is the way it links the courses on the dulcimer to the music itself... Other books seemed to forget that I don't know what strings play what note and am also new at sheet music... This book solved that by showing a diagram of the strings that are associated with the notes as well as the sheet music... Very helpful! Book also does a great job of working with fundamentals such as improving my left hand weak hits and mapping out the music on the various courses...
Also highly recommend the companion disc to hear the music...
Good luck on playing this beautiful instrument!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars From One Ragamuffin to Another.......2007-06-27

Do to finger problems, I lost the ability to play the piano & organ. I had always liked the sound of the HD on Rich Mullins' songs. Watching the dvd on "Here in America", I realized that I could play this. For pleasure, playing the melody is necesssary, but my goal is to play with our Worship Team at church, much like Rich, with a soft solo intro, then hard-hitting accompaniment. I will eventuallly fall into my own style. A great Lynn is better than a pale imitation of Rich. If you are expecting to find a book of Rich's songs, this is not it. This teaches "the style", not the song, and does a fine job of it! -- Lynn Gehringer

5 out of 5 stars A great HD chords primer.......2004-05-18

I got to thinking about the harsh comments below about Jay's excellent book and would like to comment. First, anybody who is looking for a HD songbook of Rich's music, stop looking because you won't find it. Jay's book is an excellent introduction to playing chords on the HD. That is all it was ever advertised to be. To say that Rich did not play chords on the HD is laughable. Of course he played chords. But when a person is as advanced as Rich was in his musical gift, a chord becomes something more than a chord. It takes on a new form. But that does not come from reading any book. That comes from how gifted you are, how much you desire to learn and improvise, how much you desire to practice, how closely you listen to Rich's playing in his music, etc. No book can teach you that. As for the blank chord pages, the human mind can learn much faster by finding those chords in all 12 keys, rather than reading them from a chart. Jay's book made that possible for me. Jay's book covers the basics quite well, and really got me started understanding this once thought, difficult instrument. Thanks Jay, for an excellent HD primer.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Teaches You to Play Ragamuffin Style - FAST!.......2003-07-08

I am quite confused by a previous review by Ray who slammed this book. He evidently DID NOT read the editorial review and somehow created in his own mind that this was a collection of Rich Mullins music or something. I don't know why Ray would want to document his stupidity for all to read. He is the kind of person that made Rich angry. I teach hammered dulcimer and I purchased this book out of curiosity because I enjoy Rich's music. I now recommend it to all my students as a foundational playing style even if they don't know who Rich Mullins is becuase it is such a versatile technique. This book will teach anyone to play the hammered dulcimer ragamuffin style the way Rich Mullin's played. My students learn the technique very quickly and it generates quite a bit of excitement for them. Dr. Kidwell tells you that this book is an instructional book that will get you started playing the hammered ducimer ragamuffin style. Indeed, the book teaches the ragamuffin style very effectively and goes further by providing some simplified music theory so you can quickly progress into more and more difficult songs. Ray also stated that this book did not come with a CD which is true. It does come with ONLINE RESOURCES that include sound files to play along with and quick videos that SHOW you what the hammering patterns should look like. There are also links to Rich Mullins songs etc. Actually, Dr. Kidwell did a splendid job in constructing a very simple, yet, effective instruction method for what appears to be a complicated playing style. I certainly have enjoyed the book and my students love it. Dr. Kidwell, pay no attention to Ray, you are right on with this book! Thanks

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2003-06-27

I have had a hammered dulcimer with the hope of learning to play the way that Rich Mullins did for quite a few years. I read all the instruction I could get my hands on to no avail. Finally - Yes Finally - I saw Hammered Dulcimer Ragamuffin Style! and got a copy. Wow! In just a matter of an hour or so I was playing along with some of Rich's music off a CD. People have heard me play and can't believe I have only been playing for a couple of weeks. I am now learning to embellish the patterns in the book and am very excited about what I'll be able to do a few months from now. Great book! Simple and effective.

1 out of 5 stars If you're looking for any of Rich's music, this is NOT it.......2003-06-19

This is one of the most disappointing music purchases I have ever made. Part of my disappointment stems from my love for the music of Rich Mullins. I expected to find the book full of Rich's songs. The book does not contain a single song of Rich's. Instead it is an introductory book on chording using the dulcimer. Unless you are just beginning the dulcimer, there are probably much better books on the market. Any introductory book that comes with a CD would be better. This book will NOT teach you to play like Rich. Chords on the dulcimer? Yes. The way Rich played them? Barely.

I'm almost shamed that I believed the author's comments about learning to play Rich's music. What a come on. Perhaps I read a bit into the title, but to use the name of Rich's band on the cover, and then not even have one of his songs in the book borders on false advertising. Almost 25% of the book is chord charts for YOU TO FILL IN: that's right - effectively empty space. Another 25% are chord charts. Once again, unless you know nothing about music or the dulcimer, the chord charts are worthless. Visit the Kitchen Musician site. Forget this book. The book selection at KM is better and cheaper. Just don't buy anything that does not have a CD or Tape.

Sorry Jay, I hope you'll accept my apologies; why don't you really put a book together that covers Rich's music? Or call the book what it is: A Beginners Book on Hammered Dulcimer Chording.

3 out of 5 stars OK but Not Great.......2007-03-09

This book contains nice tunes specially for weddings but I would not buy the book again. The arrangements are not well thought out and some even contain notes that are not on 15/14 dulcimer (which the book was written for). The only ornamentation the arrangements have are rolled chords (which are not explained) and harmonies. You have to have purchase Mel Bay Arranging for Hammered Dulcimer to know the author was talking about rolled chords.

Book Description

This sizeable collection of hammered dulcimer tunes brings together over 225 old-time and Celtic traditional tunes that are commonly heard at gatherings of old-time musicians. This is music that has been passed down vocally, or learned by ear instrumentally, and derived from countries where many of our ancestors originated. Trying to separate American and Celtic traditional music is an impossible task, as so many of the tunes we consider our own are adapted versions of tunes passed on to us from other countries and would fit into either category. This book therefore features favorite selections from both American and Celtic traditions. These instrumental arrangements are written in standard notation only with chord symbols.

Paul Gifford has successfully presented the history of the hammered dulcimer in North America from the 1600's to the present. Full of photographs, illustrations, tuning charts, etc., this history effectively informs those interested in this beautiful traditional instrument about its history and its many variations. As the proprietor of Ardie's Handcrafted Hammered Dulcimers, I frequently get asked about old hammered dulcimers, and this is my first and primary reference tool. Well worth the price.

Paul Gifford's work is an absolute must for hammer dulcimer students(like me), teachers and artists. Book Description

First Lessons Hammered Dulcimer is designed to instruct beginning players on the instrument. The melodies in this collection include a variety of hymns, holiday music and fiddle tunes written in standard notation, with instructions on how to read the notation. Lyrics and suggested chords for accompanying instruments are also included. The accompanying CD offers two tracks for each selection: a performance track with rhythm guitar and an instructional track with detailed phrase-by-phrase demonstration. The guided audio instruction at a slow tempo will prove invaluable for the "by ear" player. This method provides a "private lesson" approach for success on the hammered dulcimer.
