Book Description
Liv Ullmann (b. 1938) has played many roles over the course of her long life: actress, mother, activist, and author. Her lead performances in such Ingmar Bergman classics as Persona, Scenes from a Marriage, and Cries and Whispers kept her in close proximity to crafts involved in screenwriting, film direction, and production. In 1992, Ullman directed her first film Sofie and, with the quick succession of such recent masterpieces as Private Confessions, Kristin Lavransdatter, and Faithless, Ullmann has emerged as one of the most challenging, startling filmmakers working today. Tracing her artistic evolution, Liv Ullmann: Interviews reveals how her acting and her personal life have shaped her filmmaking. She also does not shy away from exploring her complicated relationship with Bergman. Ullmann candidly discusses how Bergman's workhe wrote the screenplays for Private Confessions and Faithlesshas influenced her own, but she also points out the ways in which she has diverged from his cinematic and moral vision. She talks about her feminist activism, her interest in Jewish culture, and her work as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, and how all of these experiences have affected filmmaking.
The volume features interviews and profiles from the early 1970s through 2004, and closes with a long interview conducted by the editor specifically for this volume. Liv Ullmann: Interviews provides an unusually intimate look at how a major filmmaker has developed her craft, both in front of and behind the camera.

Book Description
Do YOU have what it takes to be a star? Simon Cowell reveals the answer and takes you behind the scenes of American Idol in this wickedly entertaining tell-all.
Since the debut of American Idol, puckish Brit judge Simon Cowell has become America’s most notorious critic—not only on account of his incredible instinct for spotting the next breakout musical stars, but for his hilarious, shockingly candid repartee with everyone who crosses his path. Now, true to form, he holds nothing back, offering you a backstage pass to America’s hottest show—the highlights, the gossip, the contestants who blew their chances—and takes you on a whirlwind tour of the music business while sharing his own insider opinions, on everything.
From his days in the mailroom at EMI Records to the creation of American Idol, Simon has always had a knack for judging talent—and for being center stage. Here, he tells the rollicking stories of his first insult (to his mother), his first music criticism (to first-grade teacher Mrs. Prigg), and his first image makeover (on his unfortunate younger brother). And of course, the side-splitting backstory of the birth of American Idol—and all the dreadful auditions, bad hair days, judges’ squabbles, juicy rumors, surprise triumphs, and #1 singles that followed.
With his trademark wit and brutal honesty, Simon delivers the real dish on: Who gave the best and worst performances on the show? What really goes on between the three judges (and what was it like to kiss Paula Abdul)? Who were the biggest divas when the cameras weren’t rolling? And, if you’re an aspiring Justin or J.Lo, you’ll also learn the trade secrets that only Simon knows: how to develop an image and make the most of your talent, how to find an agent or manager, how to nail an audition, and—should you be so lucky to make it to the top—how to stretch your 15 minutes into a career.
Packed with razor-sharp insights into music, the fame game, and pop-music powerhouses from the Beatles to Britney Spears, I Don’t Mean to Be Rude, But…is your ticket inside American Idol, and a highly amusing, no-holds-barred look at what it takes to make it big.

Simon Cowell : Witty, Talented, and Fantastically Egotistical........2007-01-26
I truly have enjoyed the American Idol judge's book, I hope he writes some more books about the music industry and the show. Simon is very music business savvy, and not only proves his creditability in this book, but entertains readers with his wit and his backstage gossip! I loved it, and LOVE Simon!
Interesting Man, Interesting Book.......2006-04-20
I've always been a fan of Mr. Cowell for his brutal honesty and offbeat charm. Still, his book surprised me with its depth and clarity. It's easy to see he has a brilliant knack for the music business as well as an enlightened view of life in general. Cowell describes his childhood in England and rise to the top in an entertaining, witty way, while paying heed to Idol fans by telling humorous behind-the-scenes stories. This book is an informative and enjoyable read for anyone - who knew Simon Cowell was such a fascinating writer?
" I Don't Mean to be Rude But This is a Great Book" .......2006-02-09
Enter Simon Cowell. He's a fashon critic who always has to be "honest" and sincere. You do have to feel for Simon though. Putting up with William Hung is pretty hard to do. Simon does many eight things in this book though. He insults Madonna, Michael Jackson etc. I liked his true love section especially P. Diddy and Himself and Michael jackson and anyone. I liked his Idol chapters and his tips to succeed.
Fascinating and Funny.......2005-06-22
I read this book as a newcomer to American Idol watching back in Season 3. I found it a fascinating introduction to both the world of American Idol and the music industry. In fact, I found that much of Simon Cowell's advice and insight could probably be applied to show business in general. I thought it was interesting that his philosophy seems to often be that it is better to be "cruel to be kind." After reading the book, I certainly felt I had a much better understanding of him, of the show, and of how the music industry works.
But, of course, the fun part of the book were all of the behind-the-scenes shenanigans and "gossip" that he shared. Since I didn't begin watching AI until the third season, I enjoyed catching up vicariously this way. Some of the anecdotes about Randy and Paula and Ryan were a hoot.
I found Cowell's writing style engaging and witty. It held my interest throughout and was very easy to read. I recommend it highly, especially, of course, for fans of the series.
Rudeness is part of our common lives. It's called mediocrity.......2005-06-13
This is a "clumsy" book. My first impression was that it was written to deliver inconspicuously hidden messages to his irreverent friends. The next impression, as I sifted through his scruffy childhood, was that he did not possess any impressionable talent. Instead, he created a delusional rationale for writing such a book in the first place.
I watched American Idol on television and was intrigued by Simon Cowell. I purchased the book to gain a better understanding about him, the celebrity industry, and his insightful `dynamo' concepts. Unfortunately, all I encountered throughout the book was a rambling hypocrite who, in the end, chastised everyone for pursuing celebrity status unless they were fortunate enough to be miraculously chosen by him.
To be fair, American Idol is pure entertainment. Judging talent on time constraints and lurid subjectivity is the type of medium that will thrive in the spotlight. Millions devour the mindless intrigue.
I have seen incredible performances. But those recitals live beyond the winds of subjectivity even when those artists display eccentric personalities, vitriolic egos...and being in the right place at the right time.
One unfortunate theme oozing through Simon Crowell is his decision to export his ugly behavior from Britain to America. Perhaps it was already here, waiting for him and the timing could not have been more perfect since America must tolerate greedy politicians / corporations today with their ugly voter accountability / customer service.
I am disheartened by the fact that Simon Cowell did not spend more time focusing on his talent and business prowess. It is undecided whether he a creative genius. Unfortunately, that is the theme for a better book for a more civilized world.

The Great Movie Stars.......2005-06-13
I have always enjoyed this book, but I feel Mr Shipman could have done a similar book on Silent Stars. Unfortunately, like too many authors he despises the thing that he says he admires. The silent era is crying out for a similar detailed account of the actors who made the film industry what it is today. Another criticism is that there are too many personal opinions which sometimes border on snobbery. It is wrong to judge stars of the twenties and thirties with the attitudes of today. The film star industry started with Florence Lawrence and so should all books on films.
An excellent guide to the stars that made the cinema golden........1997-04-06
Mr. Shipman has put together the definitive guide to the stars that made their mark before WW II. From Abbott and Costello to Roland Young this book covers most of the major stars. If you buy only one reference book on vintage Hollywood's greatest make it this one. You won't be sorry
Book Description
Hollywood high priest Gene Shalit gathers humor from more than thirty years in the entertainment industry as the insightful guide on this jocular trip through the land of the stars. Bringing together zinging lines from movie personas and the stars who play them, as well as backstage humor and off-screen snipes, Great Hollywood Wit is a treasure trove of celebrity humor and movie history.

"I DRINK TO MAKE OTHER PEOPLE INTERESTING".......2003-01-02
You will have heard some of these quips before but there are enough little known comments here to make you laugh out loud many times. If you like comments such as: "I'm not upset about my divorce from Tom Arnold. I'm only upset I'm not a widow" (Rosanne Barr about her former husband) or "They didn't release the movie; it escaped" (Sam Goldwyn) or "The T is silent, as in Harlow" said by Margot Asquith, wife of the British Prime Minister, when Jean Harlow mispernounced Asquith's first name or Oscar Levant on Phyllis Diller "I treasure every moment I do not see her" you will like this slim but amusing book.
Equally amusing is Groucho Marx's series of letters to Warner Brother (producers of the movie Casablanca) attorneys regarding his intent to name a movie A Night In Casablanca.

This book details how a rock 'n' roll wife has managed to stay sane, while still blissfully wrapped in the arms of her man.
Customer Reviews:
Married to a Rock Star.......2006-08-15
Shemane's look at the backstage life, trials and tribulations of stardom is insightful and runs the gamut from joyous to sad to encouraging. Her honest writing style, with she bares her soul and lays open personal tragedy and triumph for the world to see, is gutsy but refreshing. In the end she shows us that relationships are meant to last and should light a fire under anyone who isn't trying to make the most of their own relationship.
Why I like Shemane.......2006-05-13
To be honest, I'm not an official fan of Ted Nugent and previously didn't know a thing about the whole Nugent Empire, so this review is about as objective as it gets.
I picked this book up out of curiosity, not sure what I'd find. Scandal? Sermons? Grandstanding? A recipe for Squirrel? Nope. Instead I found a woman who is not that unlike most of us wives who get caught up in the lives of their husbands. She even mentions at one point feeling like she lost herself, and that was something I could identify with.
What's admirable is that she has without question found herself again. Granted, she's still part of the strong ocean current that is Ted Nugent, but she was smart enough to learn along the journey and come out better for it. Now she's a woman simultaneously humbled and strengthened by adversity who has a clear view of her priorities. She's gone from a girl swept away to a force to be reckoned with.
So impressed was I that I'm kicking around the idea of participating in the Nugents' Queen of the Forest program. Keep in mind that I'm pretty far from a God-fearing Christian (Agnostic hippie), nor do I think I can willfully kill an animal without fainting, but reading Shemane's book peaked my interest...gave me a little something to think about. I believe I could learn from her. :o)
A Mighty Yawn !.......2005-07-23
Mrs. Motor City Madman's book was stale before it flopped off the presses. The sole purpose of a "tell-all" is to have something to tell, and Nugent has absolutely nothing worth saying. After all,she married a drug-free church-going republican,so go figure where this book is headed. Boooorinnggg!!! Add the fact that before she married Nugent she didn't do a damn thing herself! I don't take displeasure in this book because perhaps our politics don't match (and believe me,this broad can PREACH!) but simply for lack of anything worth reading. Hey lady, stick to the gory cookbooks...
other reviewers are idiots.......2004-12-12
This book speaks the truth to one of the many darksides to the rock and roll world. It took a lot of courage to write this book. If you are going to criticize anything, critique the way the book is written, NOT the lives of the people that it is written about. You either love Ted or hate him. Either way this book puts out a message in the too fast too soon world we live in and puts into perspective what is important, love and family. Get a clue!!
Disapointing Garbage.......2003-07-22
I bought this book on the recommendation of Sean Hannity of Fox News' Hannity and Colmes- someone that I typically respect very much.I ... read it on my honeymoon. In a nutshell- it is mostly her going on and on about all the celebrities she and Ted hang with, all the travel they do, all the animals they like to hunt and eat, and how the majority of us are headed straight for hell. Content wise, the book is inconsistent, disappointing, and teases you into thinking it is headed towards a climax but falls short. For example, she talks about how her health failed last fall at the beginning of the book and she never comes back to explain why. She barely touches on the affair that Ted had basically saying that she was hurt but they got over it and are now much better- never really explaining, for example, HOW they got over it. As a newleywed a lot of what drew me to this book was seeing how they got over their major problems but that never happened. It does get very obnoxious also her going on and on about "Ted's strong arms" and her saying how she really didn't like going hunting in Texas for their Honeymoon but then backtracking saying "It was ok, because I was with Ted". She also talks about how awful it is that some women dress and act provocitavely and alter themselves to make themselves more appealing to men. She later mentions that she had a boob job. Pretty big hypocrite if you ask me. Long story short, I was expecting a more insightful more raw and empowering account of maintaining one's identity while being married to such a character. Instead, I found a combination trashy romance novel, political soapbox and whinefest.

Out-of-date & opinionated, well written.......2000-06-16
"The Great Movie Stars--The Independent Years" was written in 1991, so it only covers a period of about 10 years, where Shipman's "TGMS--The International Years" left off. It is the third of Shipman's film-book trilogy: "TGMS--The Golden Years" is about films between the two World Wars; "Internat'l" from post WWII to the late 70's. So "Independent" is the movies of the 80's. Shipman did a lot of guesswork in naming future super- stars. Who remembers Marianne Sagebracht? I thought so. And many of today's megastars(Julia Roberts, Jim Carrey)are mentioned in passing or not at all. Shipman tends to look down on popular movies(some now cinematic legends like E.T. and Star Wars) and exalt artier, often more boring films. But despite some lack of insight on the future of film(e.g. his treatment of Spielberg as an untalented upstart)his writing has clarity and wit, serving as an interesting document on who was hot in the 80's. All this, and Rob Lowe & Shelley Long, too!
