5 out of 5 stars A salute to stay-with-it-ness.......2006-01-18

Drew Barrymore is to be congratulated. Her honesty is painfully refreshing and hasn't been seen lately since the new Star Jones book ... or possibly the Burt Reynolds biography.

She's seen the depths and the heights and knows the difference. She's drank the champagne (even though she was 8 at the time) and sipped the sewer water and prefers the former. She's been on the carpet and also received carpet burns on her knees when she was short rent.

Thank you Drew for being an inspiration to all the preteens with drinking problems ... they don't have to suffer in silence anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Drew Barrymore is an inspiration. Period........2005-07-10

Literally one of the greatest books I've ever read. No, I'm not saying that because I'm a Drew Barrymore fan. I mean, if acting isn't what she wanted to do, she could've been an author! Written when she was still in rehab circa late 1988 and published in 1990, this book gives all of us an insight into her early years, and the hell she went through at such a young age. She tells us about her first taste of alcohol, cigarettes, cocaine, and marijuana. She also tells us about her first kiss, and her first makeout session, and how she was always fighting with her mother. She tells us about living at the rehab. She tells us about her visits with her father as well. She shares all of her stories and adventures, her mishaps and her first achievements. With this book, I've learned how truly strong this woman is, and how no matter what she went through, she didn't ever back down at achieving what she wanted. Drew Barrymore is a true idol for anyone, and this book proves that.

I read this book 5 times in High School. (1992-1996)
I LOOOOOOOVED it!!!

5 out of 5 stars entertaining book about glamour, drugs, and lies.......2005-04-08

I was pleasantly surprised after I finished reading this book! It's very entertaining from start to finish, and as you read more and more about this little girl's life, it gets more and more interesting.
When you think Drew has hit the bottom, you turn a page and she goes farther down. It's amazing to see how strong Drew is, and every page is filled with interesting details.
It includes stories about her first drink and more, and you are amazed that such an inasant looking girl was into the worst of drugs. She tells about the terrifying and amazing incidents that came from the drugs. After you are finished, you are interested in knowing more and more about what happened to Drew.
If you want to read a very satisfying book, I highly reccomend this one!

5 out of 5 stars The best book!.......2005-03-19

I used to really dislike Drew Barrymore. ( no offence if u DO read this) i was being forced to read a biography for my lang. arts class so i picked drew cuz she was the only 1 who seemed at least worth reading bout. i dont really want to read bout someone old dead guy. so i started liking her when i started not likeing Adam Sandler as much as i used to cuz thats really the only reason i hated her cuz she was always with adam. i mean now that im not screwed up with adam i c she wasnt always with him @ all. so i started reading it and in so many ways i wanted to b friends with her and help her. but not get high with her. :) its so awesome! now i want to buy it. if i had any advice to give, everyone who thinks their live is bad, read this book. evn if u dont everyone should read this. well i gtg bye this wonderful book bye! 1 out of 5 stars Big fat airhead.......2006-06-23

I really don't have anything against Drew Barrymore, and it is too bad that she got into drug and alchohol abuse at such a young age, but without the drugs she still is a major airhead deluxe. Just listen to her when she's on Jay Leno or David Letterman. I remember a few years ago she was all psyched when she was on the tonight show with Jay Leno because she learned a few things about politics and she had to share that knowledge with the audience. Wow what a major airhead!!!! She probably wouldn't be in movies if she hadn't been in commercials and movies when she was very young. There might be a few teenage girls that might be interested in this book but most should steer clear of this biography.

5 out of 5 stars True Drew.......2004-01-02

After reading this biography my opinion on Drew Barrymore changed 100%. The authors challenge the way she is so often presented in the media throughout the book by demonstrating her bizarre upbringing and precocious achievements. Although ditzy would sometimes be a good word to describe her I now realise she's extremely hard working and dedicated to her career. Her private life also makes for good reading and it's all presented here in an informative but entertaining way.

Book Description

Real-Life Reader Biographies present the lives of contemporary role models for young readers. These are the stories of real men and women who, despite many obstacles, followed their dreams.

Drew Barrymore comes from a family of famous actors. Like the Barrymores before her, she is blessed with acting talent. Unfortunatley, she also inherited the family's predisposition toward alcohol and drug abuse.

Drew has been acting all her life. When she was just 18 months old, she starred in a dog food commercial. Not yet out of her twenties, Drew seems to have done it all. She has acted in "B" movies, blockbuster hits, and television series, she has posed nude in magazines and done a series of risque blue-jean commercials; but, more importantly, Drew has overcome her alcohol and drug addictions—something many of her family members were never able to do.

Though not all of Drew's films have been box-office successes, most will agree she is a highly talented actress.

As been a fan of drew barrymore, i could read anything about her and it would amuse me for a long time. I don't normally read books, although there is an odd occasion. I ordered this book 3 days before it came, and as soon as i had it, i read at least an hour of it [past half way OF THE BOOK.]It tells you about her when she was young, her family, her boyfriends that she as gone out with and her career. It is very interesting to read and, and as soon as you start reading it, you probably won't want to put it down. I got so interested in it and i didn't realise that i had got half way through. If you like her this book is perfect for you.

I love Drew. Very positive person throughout all her battles. So I had to get this book. I loved everything about it except it did not discuss her being bisexual at all. Minor disappointment, but its very informative and positive towards Drew and her life.

Drew Barrymore is an inspiration to me. I've followed her entire career, seen all her movies, and read almost every single article about her. This is a great book for a great star.

If you're die-hard Drew fan, you'll most likely be disappointed in this book. It's not all it's cracked up to be.
My advice? Stick to "Little Girl Lost" - much better look into her life, and it's written with her own words.
I'm not completely knocking this book - it's cute, but not so chock-full of information.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good resource, but small depth........2005-10-09

In reading a book entitled "A Century of Recorded Music" I was expecting to run across a cross-section of recorded music rather then a series of lists pertaining only to the recording of classical music. In this sense the title should have a disclaimer letting the reader know that there will be pratically no mention of jazz or popular music. There is some mention of oral history and ethnic music, but the brunt of the book looks at classical development as it was influenced by recording and popular demand. I gave it three stars because I felt that some of the space for lists could have been better used to compare and contrast the parallel development of other recorded genre's which would have given a perspective on classical music as well as the others - without it we have nothing to develop a perspective to.

5 out of 5 stars Recorded Music as Cultural Product.......2005-07-17

I have purchased this book only lately. I read so many good reviews on it when it was released in 2000 and was hoping to find it in good bookstore in Montreal (Canada). It never showed up. As I have lost all reference to it, I was surprised when I found it 5 years later in Toronto.

What a great book on history of recorded music Mr. Day wrote!

I have read many other books on the topic and none of them can compete with this one. I've read Mark Coleman's Play Back and David Morton's Off the Record. Lots of facts in these books but few lines devoted to classical music.

Under Mr.Day's writing, one discovers that recorded music can be seen as a cultural artefact and not only as a statistical or technical matter.

Men invented way to record music and music once recorded and played back changed the way men perform music. I was surprised when I read how many editing cuts there were on 30 minutes of recorded music released in the LP era. I have learned lately that there are up to 30 cuts in a 4-5 minutes piece of classical music!

I was also surprised, as Arthur wrote, that there's not a line on Naxos label while many specialised labels (Atma, Bis, etc.) find there way in the book. Naxos was by year 2000 a leading classical label. There's nothing on Chandos or Hyperion either.

          Strongly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Not the book it might have been.......2004-04-07

This book deals with a fascinating topic (at least to me), and seems to fill a gap in the literature, so I had high hopes. Unfortunately it was a big disappointment - I was amazed that the subject could be make so dull and dry! The author needs to learn the virtues of plain English rather than esoteric jargonese if he wants to enthuse anyone with his subject.

3 out of 5 stars Curiously Eurocentric View of Classical Recording History.......2001-03-07

I purchased this volume based on a generally favorable review in Gramophone, and because I have a great interest in the history of classical recording. For the most part, I found it entertaining and informative. However, I think the book suffers significantly from a rather narrow focus by the author, and a curiously incomplete view of the more recent history. After all, a century includes the final decades as well as the early ones. Incredible as it seems, the Naxos label is never mentioned in this book. Naxos emerged in the mid-1980s and became the best-selling classical label in the world. As the current issue of BBC Music Magazine points out, for example, the best-selling cellist in the world today on CD's is Maria Kliegel, one of the house artists at Naxos - not Yo Yo Ma or Mstislav Rostropovich. She's not mentioned in this book, nor are any other Naxos artists, apart from a listing of Jeno Jando (the world's best selling pianist on CD) in a list of pianists. Naxos has had an incredible impact, especially in the past few years as it has revived forgotten repertory. Another weakness of the book is its skimpy treatment of the American classical scene, and its general failure to explore in greater depth the emergence of independent labels in many countries and the consolidation of the traditional "major" labels and their subsequent retreat from classical recording. I do urge enthusiasts for classical music to buy this book for its many useful insights and wealth of interesting "inside" information about classical recording, but I wish the author had done another 100 pages and achieved a more complete coverage.
