Book Description

Since the earliest days of the film industry, mainstream films have been banned for their sexual, religious, social, and political content. Forbidden Films traces the efforts to censor 125 films, ranging from the silent Birth of a Nation to Schlindler's List. This fascinating reference examines the continued efforts to regulate the industry, providing a summary of each banned film-including production details, censorship history, and suggestions for further reading.

Coverage includes:
* Early efforts to regulate the movie industry, such as the Hays Code in 1922 and the Motion Picture Production Code in 1930
* The emergence of the Catholic League of Decency, which wielded extensive power for nearly forty years
* The reasoning behind different types of film censorship-including racism and anti-Semitism, sexual "indecency," and the fear of Communism
* Classic and contemporary films that have faced censorship, for sexual content (Last Tango in Paris, A Streetcar Named Desire), social content (Basic Instinct, Of Human Bondage), political content (Anna and the King, Revenge at Daybreak), religious content (La Dolce Vita, The Last Temptation of Christ), and violence content (Natural Born Killers, Scarface)
* Appendixes profiling the directors of the banned films, films classified according to the reason for their censorship or ban, and a listing of 125 additional challenged, censored, and banned films.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-05-24

Of interest mainly as a reference source, but a risk for the casual reader. Each of the 125 entries contains a summary of the film's context, a sketch of the censorship travails, and a brief bibliography -- encompassing on the average, one to three pages for each entry. Considering the subject-matter, the discussion style remains curiously colorless and detached. Despite the suggestive title, there's clearly no exploitation of the contents. And yet, the text could use some pepping up -- well-chosen photographs would have helped. Moreover, there's no apparent logic behind the films chosen for inclusion, no particular point to the "sampling", and since many of the entries are obscure to the average film-goer, its value as a reference is restricted. Nonetheless, for someone wanting an easily encompassed glimpse of film censorship world-wide, the book may fit the bill.

1 out of 5 stars Hugely inaccurate.......2003-02-12

It doesn't take long to find errors in this book: just read the wholly inaccurate plot synopsis of The Last Picture Show, which is hardly obscure or difficult to find on video, and thus would have been easy to check.

Or how about the reference to a film receiving an R rating from the MPAA *several years prior to the establishment of the MPAA's rating system*?

Had this been a book of insights or analysis, a few such lapses might have been forgivable. But this is a dry reference work, with little interpretation by the author: and dry reference works require a higher standard of accuracy.

3 out of 5 stars A touch of free speech with a sense of lacking.......2002-09-27

Even though this book brings important items out to light, the work itself is lacking and at times incomplete. It also has a strong sense of sensasionalism to it, think of watching NBC on daily news. The mention of films like The Great Dictator as items under censorship and controversy is in itself sensasionalistic, as opposed to Citizen Kane which is not mentioned at all, gives a better idea of how subtle and hyped this work is, besides, the constant reference to the De Grazia book by title Banned Films: Movies, Censors and the First Amendment, makes it look like it is a copy of such book and no actual research was ever done to actualize, itemize or distinguish one text from the other. In short this book could be helpful on legal matters and cross reference from one legal case to another, since it does provide the actual case numbers and states where cases where trialed (picture yourself battling the Supreme court and having this book as a resource for enlightment on appeals, injunctions and motions), as far as film is concerned, I personally know of at least 125 more banned films within one decade alone and after the Hays Production Code or the Christian Legion of Decency to write a book on. Sova deserves credit for sticking it out with the female stars and the sex/erotic/porn oriented genre, but I for one think of film as a much broader medium in which the powers that be relish to exert their power to limit the means of expression whether this be of religious, sexual or political nature. Recommended for the high school reader with a strong suggestion to do further reading

Seperated from his father, whose fate he never learned, just before Earth was destroyed by the hostile Drej species, Cale Tucker was raised by one of his father's friends, Tek, a member of a peaceful alien race. Taken to Tek's desolate homeland, he grew up longing for his father's return, and eventually accepting that he'd never see him again. Tek is determined that Cale, now fifteen, learn something of Earth and Humanity, so, along with an orphan alien girl, they begin a journey that takes them throughout the galaxy. This book explained a lot of how Cale became the person he was in the movie - why he resented his father, why he looked down on drifter colonies, etc. I highly reccomend this companion novel to science fiction fans who are looking forward to seeing Titan A. E.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book adding knowledge to the topic!.......2000-06-01

Cale's Story is a rather grand book which extends the reader's knowledge further into the world (or universe) which has been created by the many makers of Titan A.E. There is an element of suspense at several key parts of the book which is sure to get the reader excited! I recommend this book to any science-fiction lover along with the 2 other books written to tie-in with the movie.

now my opinion is that this book is very childish and has lot of plot holes. If you are reading this book beacuse of the original TITAN A.E. then DONT. if you r reading this book for fun DONT.

KJ anderson never fails to dissapoint me

4 out of 5 stars At times corny, but overall good........2002-03-12

"Akima's Story" is a good novel, simple and childish, but good. "Akima's Story" is a prequel to the film "Titan A.E.", and the plot centers around Akima and her friend Ishaq, both of which
reside on a human drifter colony, New Marrakech, until it is attacked by the Drej. The attack leaves Akima and Ishaq's parental guardian dead, and this motivates the two of them to buy a ship and find work. The couple easily find work transporting goods to Solbrecht, and on their first mission they find trouble. After narrowly escaping death from a criminal kingpin's goons Akima and Ishaq team up with Stith to take down Golbus and to locate acient artifacts that Ishaq's father and Sam Tucker had been hiding.

The plot is original, but doesn't seem like it took a lot of thought to develop, and the dialogue is very "childish" and corny. But I just tried to turn off my brain and enjoy it for what it was, and even though it has a lot of plot holes that didn't stay consistant with the film, I just tried to read it as if it were a totally different story, and I think that if you do the same a lot of the plot holes will not be so evident.

I feel that the people who would enjoy this novel the most are those who are fans of "Titan A.E.", for those who enjoy Science Fiction stories, and for young ones, as there is no real offensive language and almost no violence. Though fans of either of the above mentioned may feel that it's to kiddie to be taken seriously and many may want to laugh at some of the dialogue. Overall, I did enjoy "Akima's Story", and you may enjoy it as well if you keep an open mind. Thanks for reading.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Read It.......2000-08-07

This was the best book I have ever read. Akima and Ishaq and Stith are the best. I recommend it a lot. Akima keeps the story going. It tells you a lot about Akima like how her her hair got short and purple, what happend to her mom and dad. You should read it.

5 out of 5 stars An exellent book 2 read..........2000-07-04

This book is honestly very well done, but u have 2 read it before u read the novel cause then you'll understand the story better... If u r wondering this book is about Akima's life before she went to work on finding the Titan or working with Korso. That is why u should read it before u read the novel. Other than that it is a really good book, and u should also read Cale's story too... You'll find some intresting parts in both stories... Have fun reading! -If u get it, which I mostly recomend, for Titan AE fans or any science fiction fans... =)

4 out of 5 stars Great story but its better if read before the movie or novel.......2000-06-15

Ok, I really liked this book but some aprts are screwed up and I'll go into that later. This book and Cale's story are best read before you see the movie or read the movie novelezation. It gives some great background on why Akima is sort of fiesty and strays away from other people. But some parts of it are jsut not right. Now I read this book AFTER I read the novelezation. First of all, in the beggining of the book, Akima meets Korso. Nope, the novel says she dosn't meet him until years later when she is already a great pilot. Second, the novel says Akima's grabdmother started theaching her how to fly as soon as she was old enough. In this book, she dosn't start training until after her grandmother is dead. Thrid, Akima meets Stith half way through the book. In the novel, Stith is part of Korso's crew and she has never met him. Little things like this take some fun out of the book. This book dosn't have like any swearing or severe violence but in the beggining her mentor is hurt badly and the book goes into deep detail in his injuries. Its a fun read and I think most people will like it.

During the past quarter century, Black Enterprise magazine has been authoritatively chronicling the prime movers and shakers among African American entrepreneurs while annually ranking their top companies in numerous categories. Now, in Black Enterprise Titans of the B.E. 100s, editor-at-large Derek T. Dingle looks more closely at the 11 individuals who operate America's very largest black-owned firms. Among them are the well-known, such as Jet and Ebony magazine founder John H. Johnson and Black Entertainment Television creator Robert L. Johnson, along with the not-so-well-known, such as auto dealer and former NFL star Mel Farr Sr. and "People's Banker" Emma C. Chappell. Touching upon an array of industries--ranging from media and music to food processing and construction--it presents these "passionate, proud and persevering" men (and one woman) in illuminating profiles that benefit from the magazine's long-range perspective. They show how both established and emerging leaders have used "imagination and drive" to battle "a lack of capital, diminished access, and outright racism" and still succeed on such a grand level. Additionally, they introduce these formidable corporate figures to a broader audience that in the future will also benefit from their experiences. --Howard Rothman

    Book Description

"Money has no color. If you can build a better mousetrap, it won't matter whether you're black or white. People will buy it." —A. G. Gaston Black Enterprise's 1992 Entrepreneur of the Century.

For more than 25 years, Black Enterprise, the premier African American business magazine, has ranked and chronicled the B.E. 100s—its exclusive listing of the nation's top-grossing, black-owned businesses. Generating more than $14 billion in annual revenue and employing more than 55,000 people, these companies represent a vibrant and often overlooked segment of the American economy. Their CEOs, among the wealthiest and most powerful players in the black business community, have been the vanguard of an entrepreneurial revolution. They achieved greatness despite a lack of capital, diminished access, and even outright racism, using their imagination and drive to seize opportunities and break through barriers.

First in the new Black Enterprise series, Titans of the B.E. 100s profiles eleven of these remarkable leaders of the largest black-owned businesses. Covering a broad cross-section of companies and industries, this compelling book features both today's emerging entrepreneurs and the established CEOs, revealing the secrets of how they beat the odds and the hard truths about the myriad challenges they've faced.

No other book brings together so many contemporary black business success stories. Through in-depth, first-person interviews, you'll meet the titans who started their companies from the ground up and were relentless in doing so; who filled a void in the consumer market and, in turn, revolutionized whole industries; and who love the companies that they run and are energized by new ventures. Each chapter profiles a different business legend: From John H. Johnson, founder of Ebony and Jet magazines; to Herman J. Russell, who used $125 to create the nation's largest black-owned construction firm; to Emma C. Chappell, the People's Banker, who launched the United Bank of Philadelphia; to Robert L. Johnson, who created Black Entertainment Television and then transformed BET Holdings, Inc. from a single cable network to an entertainment monolith that became the first black-owned business listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Inspiring and motivating, Titans of the B.E. 100s will introduce you to an incredible group of men and women who made a profound impact upon global business, symbolizing a spectacular realization of the American Dream.

Praise for TITANS OF the B.E. 100s. "Titans of the B.E. 100s challenges the vintage profile of the entrepreneur by showcasing the impressive and dynamic careers of African American executives who surmounted social, economic, and political barriers to gain their deserved place in today's world of the business elite."—Kweisi Mfume, President and CEO, NAACP.

"Titans of the B.E. 100s aptly documents the achievements of African American entrepreneurs who embody the legacy of the twentieth century and the hope of the twenty-first century. The principles espoused by these esteemed business leaders are essential to the future of the civil rights movement as we prepare our children for self-reliance and our adults for economic self-sufficiency in the next century.—Hugh B. Price, President, National Urban League.

The intriguing profiles in this book tell the stories of a group of people who started with nothing and went straight to the top, overcoming obstacles with tenacity, ingenuity, and sheer bravery: Don H. Barden

Titans should be required reading for African Americans that doubt the promise. In spite of our nations ills, some of these individuals made millions in the 40's. Think about that! Given the current state of affairs (The Don Imus incident) it's clearly evident that race is still an extremely sensitive issue in this nation. Consider current racial disparities then consider the concept of dark-skinned African American male millionaires in the 40's. It's an unbelieveable achievement! If they were able to do it and create dynasties for their families in their time, what's stopping present day African Americans from reaching their financial goals and dreams today? This book is yet another small piece of evidence that determination, dedication and delayed gratification are the true components of realizing a dream. It helps prove that good luck is created by hard work; more importantly, it ensures, through the cohesivenss of the family unit, that those characteristics be past on to the next generation creating traditions of success and a grounded since of identity. A quality noticably missing from the present day African American male image. It's important to note the African American family unit, before the onslaught of the welfare referendum of the 60's, as a pinnacle source of support. I'm usually hesitant about grading generously but I think this book, brief though it may be, with it's little life snipits of successful African Americans lives, reinforces the ethos of hard work and just rewards based on merit. But not a form of merit preached to you by a sceptical public or more acceptable form forced upon you through legislative pity, but a personal merit earned through hard work and family pride.

5 out of 5 stars Eleven inspiring African American business success stories.......2000-08-19

This is a book of African American business success stories. Until now, the eleven self-made black business leaders featured-The Titans of the Black Enterprise 100s-were virtually unknown, even to American business students. Yet, they run America's largest black-owned companies and have been the vanguard of an entrepreneurial revolution. Achieving success despite lack of capital, diminished access, and outright racism, they used inspiration and drive to seize opportunities and break barriers. They are black America's wealthiest and most powerful players, providing employment, training, and advancement for large numbers of African Americans.

They represent, in many ways, the economic evolution of post-war African Americans. The first step in the effort for black equality was driven largely by the Civil Rights Movement, which led to the social and legal reforms of the 1950s and 1960s. Next, the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which eliminated such barriers to political activity as the poll tax and illiteracy test, gave rise to the increase in black political strength with the election of blacks to Congress in the late 1960s and 1970s. Those events were followed by the propulsion of black economic power in which African Americans gained an opportunity to amass wealth and achieve the American Dream that had been elusive for so long. In the 1980s and 1990s, blacks, who gained access to the nation's leading universities and major corporations, leveraged their education and experience to acquire and finance new companies as well as develop enterprises through emerging technologies.

The eleven chapters of this book each tell the untold story of these titans and the contributions they and their companies have made to American industry and life. Their stories and ideas will instruct, inspire, illuminate and motivate the reader to build on their success. This book is a source of inspiration and motivation to the next generation of captains of industry of all races and both genders the world over.

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps /better/ than the movie..?.......2002-03-05

I first bought this book after seeing the movie back in June 2000. Titan AE really captured my heart as a movie, I just felt it was so well done and had such an interesting (and hardly seen) plot and characters, perhaps one of the best science fiction stories I've ever read or watched, and I felt really inspired me as a writer and an artist.

I raided the book store after seeing the movie and picked out this book along with both Cale and Akima's stories, and this one was, perhaps, one of my favorites. I think it's great that they did an adult novelization of it, because not all of us are ten year old boys whose only interests are the lasers and the big bad aliens. I haven't read the book in a long time now, being caught up in other books since I discovered the fantasy genre (Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings in particular), but in a way, I felt the novelization was /better/ than the movie, just in the extra depth it put into the stories and the characters. The novelization is based on the earlier version of the film, so it has some scenes that didn't appear in the movie, which are interesting to read.

I really enjoyed reading a novelization more on an adult reading level, and for sure I'd recommend this to anyone, even people who have not seen Titan AE yet, and if you haven't, I highly encourage you to. Don't let the box office fool you; this movie, for sure, was one of those small gems that just got out at the wrong time. It is highly unfortunate this movie didn't get the attention and credit it deserved (Disney exactly a year after Titan AE's theatrical release brought out the movie Atlantis, which I felt was like their imitation of Titan AE in both quality and style, though it didn't live up). For sure seeing this movie was one of the best things I've ever done, but it's all a matter of opinion. Find out for yourself.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written novelization of a movie.......2001-07-08

This is a children's book. From the inferences in the book, I am sure the movie is a good thriller. I could "see" how the visual effects would be great. The problem here is that the authors did not try to fill in the background colors too well.

I find almost all the action to be unlikely. The Drej arrive just as Cale is about to be picked up after 15 years. Akima is kicked out the airlock in a pod that allows her to live so the slavers can get her. The slavers who are heavily armed and have an incentive to keep their property, allow the team to break in and steal her away. And on and on. This is an action film, but the book does not adequately show the special effects. An action flick does not have to spawn a great masterpiece of literature, but the authors could have at least filled in more of the reasons why the people are doing what they are doing without the same jerkiness you get in an action film.

I have not seen the movie. People who have say it is great. See the movie. Skip this book unless you are a child.

      5 out of 5 stars Titan A.E........2000-12-01

This book was very in depth to everyones story and had excellent details. it gave details on everyone and all of the places and ships in the story. So I plan on reading this book again and i recommend it to you too.

      5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing.......2000-07-26

I cannot describe how good this book was. I thought nothing could be better than the movie and I was right, but this book is the closest thing out there. I feel that Titan A.E. is actually BETTER than Star Wars. The way that Cale's and Akima's stories tie in together is very intuitive and well planned out. I recommend this book to sci fi lovers and people who just like to listen to cool stuff happen.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Awsome Book.......2000-07-04

After I saw the movie I was like totally envolved with anything that dealed with Titan AE. (I luved the movie in case u r wondering) I was looking through the bookstore one day and I found this book and Cale's story and Akima's story. Let me tell u, they are all the best books ever. This novel is just a tiny bit different from the movie but that doesn't really matter... It makes it even better in a way. I sugjest though, that u get Cale's story or Akima's story before u read this book because those stories will help u understand the novel better. I hope u find this review helpfull and anywayz, if u get the book I'm totally sure that u'll like it cause I did and also that I would mostly recomend it to Titan A.E. Fans or just science fiction readers,....
