Thourogh book on the making of Fantasia 2000.......2000-07-07

This was a beautiful book. Interpolated with pictures from the new Disney film it is for any fan of the new film. I did enjoy his other book on the Fantasia more. This though in detail on each of the ssegments individually there is not enough info on the overall creative process. I thimk this book belongs first for any Fantasia 2000 fan, secod for any Disney fan, and and a distant third for anyone who enjoys reading about the making of movies.

Brilliant Visions.......2000-05-22

Whether you are wanting a companion to the wonderful film, to learn more about animation, to keep a little piece of the fantastic art for yourself or simply to inspire you by sitting on your coffee table, you will not be disappointed with this book. The layout and presentation are stunning and you will treasure this beatiful book for years to come.

My suggestion is to also buy the soundtrack and listen to it while flipping through the pages of this book. You will find yourself inspired - no matter what sort of day you've had.

Fantasia 2000- As good a book as the movie.......2000-03-26

Fantasia 2000: Visions of Hope was an extremely good book. My entire family enjoyed looking at the photos. The book provides an extensive overview of every segment of the film.It helps you to understand the framework of each segment, and prepares you extremely well for the movie. The book even lets you in on hidden jokes in the movie such as where to spot Mickey and Minnie in "Pomp and Circumstance," or where to spot a hidden Nina in "Rhapsody in Blue". The book is a must have for fans of Fantasia 2000, fans of Disney, or even other people who just love these sorts of coffee table books.

The Next Best Thing.......2000-01-06

This is a brilliant companion to a brilliant film. Countless colorful stills from the film and commentary from its creators makes this a must for collectors and fans of the film. Culhane continues to be a master of Disney animation and this book is consistant with, if not better than, all of his worthwhile looks at the Disney animated films. If you like this book, you'll adore The Art of The Huntchback of Notre Dame. This oversized art book in some ways is more satisfying than the film itself. Huntchback the book provides an in depth and pictoral overview of the classic story and the development of the animated film, including beautiful conceptual artwork from illustrator Peter DeSeve and insightful character development sketches. Where the film, while almost perfectly animated, lacked heart the book makes up for. If you can find it, get it. But unitl you find that, Fantasia 2000 will more than keep you and your eyes busy.

This book is really spectacular. The illistrations are supurb and the writing is just great. Whether you like Fantasia/2000, or you're into classical music, or you love Disney animation, this is a really wonderful read. Well worth the price!

Pretty good!.......1999-07-28

If you liked FANTASIA you will love to play this music. Sad to say it isn't very ful, THE RITE OF SPRING part has only the "Dance of the Maidens". And the SORCERER'S APPRENTICE doesn't even have the most famous part. You know, "dun-din-dootatu-dun-de-dun-de-detatoon"! I recommend it for people who loved FANTASIA though.

Great for 3 - 4 year olds.......2006-10-01

This is a great 'teach it to your child yourself' book even if you're not a pianist. As a piano teacher, I recommend it to parents/aunts/uncles/grandparents who want to expose a young child to playing the piano or keyboard. The story of Mozart Mouse and Beethoven Bear makes the lessons even more interesting - keeps the student's attention longer.

I like it so much that I like to play it again. My favourite song in this book is 'Haydn's Symphony'.
I like it so much it's my music book ofcourse. I like all the animals best because they learn me music so much. I can't even kiss them because they are in my music book. Mummy might get me the animals for christmas!

The workbook is a must when teaching from the lesson book. The workbook follows the lesson book Music for Little Mozarts: A Piano Course to Bring Out the Music in Every Young Child (Music for Little Mozarts)and includes coloring and and exercises to reinforce what your child learned in the lesson book.

I gave it 4 stars because once you use it, you can't reuse it for another student.

I think that the flashcards were a must because they really helped reinforce what my child was learning during her lessons. They're big, easy-to-read, and very user-friendly if you have no music background.

The cards review notes, rhythms, music dynamics, and musical symbols.

They're a good, worthwhile purchase.

We, my students and I, love this book. It is a main take-out in our school library. I teach 3rd grade and I love to introduce my students to the arts. I find that Rachel Isadora's books often deal with artistic themes and I love all of them. I especially like this book because of the illustrations and the history that she writes about. I thank you for this super addition to our collection.

This is a most wonderful book. I am a music teacher and just went online to order a 10 for my students. I love this book and find it very helpful when teaching about classical music, especially to young children. I hope Ms. Isadora is planning on creating more books about composers and music in general.

The Pictures are the Thing!.......2001-07-26

YOUNG MOZART by Rachel Isadora is an acceptable way to introduce young children to the child prodigy Mozart. The very basic facts of his life story are outlined clearly and precisely. There are a few interesting anecdotes to liven the text: his father's nightly duets with the very young Mozart, Mozart's introduction to Marie Antoinette, his own children's pet starling, and his friends gathering around his death bed to sing the unfinished requiem. But Mozart's life seems quite conventional and tranquil, which is far from the story we know to be true. The pictures in the book, however, are charming and beautiful. It was the illustrations, in fact, that turned my own seven year old son from an audience who insisted he was not going to pay any attention if we didn't read a book about animals into a little boy who wanted to know why Mozart could write music before he could write sentences, why he had to wear a wig, and why he died when he was so young. The basic facts are there, and combined with the pictures make the book more memorable for children.

A Man for His Times.......2007-09-12

Mozart and Leadbelly is a collection of short stories, essays and talks that Ernest Gaines has produced over the years. I was drawn to this short but repetitious book because I've read two Gaines novels this year and wanted to learn more about Gaines as a writer, more about his creative process, and more about the man that he is.

Ernest J. Gaines was born in Louisiana in 1933, a time when many black families were still tied to the land that their ancestors had worked as slaves. It was, in effect, a watered down version of the plantation system which had once thrived in that part of the state. Gaines learned many lessons before he left Louisiana to go to California for an education, lessons that serve him well to this day. He was raised by a crippled aunt who managed to cook meals, clean house and raise a vegetable garden by crawling on the ground much as a six-month-old baby might crawl. Her example taught Gaines that nothing is impossible and that quitting is not an option. He became a writer when he started producing letters for the illiterate friends of his aunt who came to him on her front porch and asked him to write to their distant family members. Seldom did they have anything to say other than "I'm fine and things here are fine," asking him to fill up the rest of a couple of pages with something interesting.

The essays will be of particular interest to fans of the Gaines novels, A Lesson Before Dying, A Gathering of Old Men and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman because of the insights offered into how those novels were conceived and constructed. In addition, there are five early short stories, including the first one Gaines ever wrote, "The Turtles," that display Gaines' remarkable talent for recreating a time through the eyes of the ordinary people who lived it. Not surprisingly, Gaines was influenced and learned from the writers who preceded him, in particular writers like Twain, Joyce, Turgenev, Chekhov and Tolstoy. But he also took inspiration from the great paintings which seemed to him to tell a story as well as any novel could do it, and from music ranging from Mozart to Leadbelly.

A Gifted Writer Shares Some Insights And Stories.......2006-05-11

I can still remember seeing THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MISS JANE PITMAN on television in the early 1970's. I was in the fourth grade and for some reason, I was able to stay up and watch the entire movie which ended far past my bedtime. Maybe it was a holiday weekend or perhaps my parents were out of the house, I'm not sure which was the case but I vividly recall an elderly Cicely Tyson fearlessly walking up to a water fountain marked whites only and taking a drink. I was captivated by the power of this character. Fast forward to the late 1990's: I'm reading a book about an African American teacher in the pre-civil rights South. He's too ambitious to be in a classroom, yet teaching is the only job he can get that uses his talents. He's lonely, isolated, and is asked to bring some dignity to a man on death row. Once again I'm captivated. The character's name is Grant and he's the protagonist of the novel A LESSON BEFORE DYING. I'm not sure I have all that much in common with either Grant or Miss Jane, yet they are both memorable characters created by a gifted writer Ernest J. Gaines.

MOZART AND LEADBELLY is a book that is a gift to fans of Gaines' writing or people interested in how a writer creates a work. In this collection, Gaines tells how he created some of his most memorable characters and novels. The style of the writing is conversational and would be writers will find it informative. Teachers will also find it useful. Many schools now use A LESSON BEFORE DYING in the classroom, so it's the perfect guide to show how an author brings a work to life. Gaines also includes some shorter works and the stories are good, but the essays and the transcript of a panel discussion at the end of the book are what make the book a great resource and enjoyable read.

In one of the essays, Gaines states that all writer hope to be another Scott Turrow or John Grisham. Sales wise maybe, and if I ever get my novel completed and it sells like a Grisham or Turrow thriller, I'd be happy. If I was compared with Ernest J. Gaines, I'd be honored.

One of my favorites.......2005-11-20

Ernest Gaines is one of my favorite writers. I had moved to Nebraska to do a Ph.D. in philosophy, until one day at the public library I discovered Mr. Gaines' fiction. After reading Bloodline and A Lesson Before Dying, I dropped out of the doctoral program and started writing fiction.

And that's what I've been doing for the past four years: writing fiction. As I read and re-read Gaines' work, I was hoping he would publish a new novel or short story collection. So when I heard Mozart and Leadbelly was coming out, I was excited.

This new book is a collection of essays, interviews, and Mr. Gaine's early fiction (including his first published short story "The Turtles"). These essays are beautiful pieces of writing; each one tells a different story: Gaines' early life as a boy from Louisiana, his college days in San Francisco, advice on writing, and much more. The interviews show Gaines in a more informal settings as he sits on his front porch in Louisiana discussing his favorite writers as well as other influences on his fiction (painters and composers). This is a fun book, and I have marked off several passages that have allowed me to crystalize what I'd been trying to say about writing but couldn't until I read this book.

Also, after reading Mozart and Leadbelly, you'll learn that Mr. Gaines is at work on a new novel, something his friends hope will be his next masterpiece.

Ernest Gaines is a fine writer, and it's amazing how simple and beautiful the language is. He has created a world all his own and his voice is unmistakable. This is a major accomplishment from one America's finest living writers.
