In 1953, When Audrey Hepburn burst onto the screen in Roman Holiday, she forever changed the international ideal of elegance, grace, and beauty. Suddenly, glamour and even sexiness seemed attainable for women everywhere; Audrey was uncommonly beautiful, but she was real--hers was a look anyone could aim for, but few could pull off as effortlessly or effectively. By mixing a few classic elements of "Audrey style"--the little black dress, ballet flats with slim capri pants, bold hats and sunglasses--suburban housewives became more Hollywood than Hoboken in an instant.
Here author Pamela Clarke Keogh introduces us to the woman behind the clothes, using words from friends, fellow actors, and designers who dressed her to paint a picture of a truly remarkable woman. A humanitarian, artist, friend, and above all, survivor, Audrey inspired women and men alike to approach life with spirit, grace, and simplicity. The nearly 100 color and black-and-white photographs, paired with original sketches from such fashion luminaries as Givenchy, Manolo Blahnik, and Vera Wang, show that Audrey was much more than a beautiful, well-dressed personality; her courage and individuality come shining through in every page. --Leah Ball
Book Description
Everyone, it seems, is a fan of Audrey's. She was Gigi, a princess, Holly Golightly, a nun, Maid Marian, even an angel. And we believed her in every role. But Audrey Hepburn was also one of the most admired and emulated women of the twentieth century, who encouraged women to discover and highlight their own strength. By example, she not only changed the way women dress--she forever altered the way they viewed themselves.
But Audrey Hepburn's beauty was more than skin deep. "You know the Audrey you saw onscreen? Audrey was like that in real life, only a million times better," says designer Jeffrey Banks. For the first time, this style biography reveals the details--fashion and otherwise--that contributed so greatly to Audrey's appeal. Drawing on original interviews with Hubert de Givenchy, Gregory Peck, Nancy Reagan, Doris Brynner, and Audrey Wilder, as well as reminiscences of professional friends like Steven Spielberg, Ralph Lauren, noted Hollywood photographer Bob Willoughby, Steven Meisel, and Kevyn Aucoin, Audrey Style brings the Audrey her family and friends loved to life.
With more than ninety color and black-and-white photographs, many of which have never before been published, and original designer sketches from Edith Head, Hubert de Givenchy, Vera Wang, Manolo Blahnik, Alexander McQueen, and others, Audrey Style gives measure to the grace, humor, intelligence, generosity, and inimitable fashion sense that was Audrey Hepburn.

Pass the sick bag, Mabel.......2007-06-22
Even though I'm definitely an AH fan, I thought that the author went overboard with praise for Miss Hepburn's personal qualities. No doubt AH herself would be embarassed to read all this fawning and adulation.
This book attempts to combine into one an AH biography and an analysis of her fashion style. Unfortunately, both fall short. The only worthwhile text was the introduction by Hubert de Givenchy.
Inspiring Audrey style.......2005-11-16
I think Audrey Hepburn will be eternally remembered not only as one of the kindest and most generous women that has ever volunteered for Unicef, but to us women as a timeless, most graceful role model of style. She's the perfect embodiment of the adagio that in elegance less is more. Her streamlined, understated style that yet made one of the biggest statements in fashion history continues to be an inspiration to us women of the 21st century despite the forty years that separate us from "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Clarke Keogh's book captures Audrey's spirit like no other. It is beautifully illustrated and there are contributions from Hubert de Givenchy, Ralph Lauren or Gregory Peck, among other people who generously share with us souvenirs of this angel of grace that they had the chance to meet in person. Her wardrobe and makeup are meticulously reviewed and this book will prove an invaluable tool and source of inspiration for all those women who want to bring more elegance and refinement into their lives. One of the best assets in your style bookcase and one that you will gladly pass down to generations of graceful women to come.
the pictures are wonderful, the writing horrible.......2005-10-16
If they reprinted this without any words, it would get 5 stars.
Random examples of the writing:
"'Oh, they were fated to meet,' says Connie, curiously choosing the exact same words used to describe Audrey's friendship with Givenchy." (Like OMG! Someone said Audrey was _fated_ to meet Givenchy! And someone else said she was _fated_ to meet another person!)
"... she intones with the well-bred vowels of a Farmington girl, with some of her old boss, Diana Vreeland, thrown in for emphasis."
Pamela Clarke Keogh comes off like an untalented high school student in a creative writing class. You know the sort, under the impression that bludgeoning the reader with random vignettes and a morass of clauses is "descriptive."
And don't get me started on the over-the-top hagiographic nature of this book. Look, I love Audrey as much as the next person. Probably more. But how many quotes like "and she couldn't have been sweeter! So gracious! Beyond gracious! Heavenly!" do we need? There's such a thing as praising so much it becomes meaningless.
The photos are superb, AND..........2005-01-10
It's putting the quirky details together that makes this book more revealing than the standard saccharin drenched puff piece.
For example, Hepburn is quoted as saying that she wears a size 8 1/2 shoe, while the author clearly states later in the book that Hepburn wore a size ten.
Her mother's quotes, if accurate, provide convincing evidence that the Baroness Von Heemstra was more than a little jealous of her far more beautiful daughter.
The author's claim that Audrey "didn't eat during times of stress" directly contradicts close friends Audrey Wilder and Doris Brynner, who claimed that Hepburn loved to eat. As for her staying so thin due to malnutrition that "permanently altered her metabolism", this is unlikely. According to the author, Hepburn speaks of gaining twenty pounds early in her career. Other bios confirm this. Perhaps in later years Hepburn simply watched what she ate.
According to the author, Hepburn washed her hair every four or five days. She SMOKED. Whew, draw your OWN conclusions about that one!
I've found Robert Wolders a bit creepy ever since I read about him in "Queenie", a superb biography of Merle Oberon. From Merle to Audrey to Shirlee Fonda; this guy clearly has a THING for wealthy, older glamour girls. He's always described as an actor/businessman. Hmmmmmmm.
An additional strength of this book is its focus on her personal fashion philosophy--not just her association with Givenchy.
Audrey Hepburn is my absolute favorite and always will be. She had many lessons to teach; not only about beauty and elegance, but also about tolerance, grace and kindness. No star of today can compare.
PS-I'm just tucking into the Barry Paris book, which is FAR more in depth. I recommend following Audrey Style with this one if you haven't already read it.
A perfect book about a perfect lady.......2004-06-08
I really like this book-it really shows what an absolutely beautiful lady she was-she certainly was very sensual and sexy. She knew how to project herself without going overboard-
the lady had class and it really showed. There aren't any actresses like Audrey anymore-I really miss her.
I highly recommend getting this book.

Ground breaking for its time.......2007-04-12
When this book was published the Cold War was still a fact of life - and yet this exhibition focused on the costumes and fashions of the Imperial era of Russia. This was not something that the Soviets liked to highlight - but despite that they pulled out a dazzling aray of costumes linked to the Imperial court for this book (and exhibition I believe).
If this book had been fully published in colour it would still be a real classic, but as it is there is only a few pages of colour images which is a real shame. However, there are still some rare images in Black and White to be found in this book if you enjoy Russian costume. Its not all aristocartic - there are some festival costumes from the country, but this is a good introduction to the glory of Russian dress from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
Around this time a rather big and lush colour book on costumes in Russia, with many of the same clothes was published called "Art of Costume in Russia: Eighteenth to Early Twentieth Century" that is worth seeking out if you enjoy Russian costume.
In the Russian Style.......2002-06-21
I bought the book based on the cover, so I was disappointed to see that there were just few color photographs, which are gorgeous nonetheless. Because the majority of the photographs & the illustrations are in black & white, the intricate details of the costume were not enhanced as well as the colored photos.
A Perennial Favorite--Gorgeous!.......2001-05-17
I love this book--I've worn out two copies of it already. A great mixture of text (the description of a Winter Palace ball is heaven) and glorious pictures. I wish there was a bit more about the royal family and some detail photos for the clothes (which are stunning--if you love vintage costume this book is a must have!) but those are quibbles. Great if you love old Russia, Royalty/Court Life.

not good.......2007-01-09
The book was fine and made a great gift. Amazon screwed up not only the order by the credit back to my account.
Agh, my eyes.......2007-01-03
This book definitely focuses more on the "gourmet" side of things, so you won't find too many of the recipes you've come to know and love from that tin shack truck stop off the dirt road in Chimayo. There are still some gems in here, but my single biggest complaint has to be about the fact that the entire thing is printed in red ink. Not dark red, either; bright, vibrant, difficult-to-keep-your-eyes-on-the-page red. I'm sure somebody thought it would be a cute gimmick, but it wears off instantly.
I think that this book is a gem among modern cookbooks........1999-03-04
The red chile bible has brought the exciting red chile into my life and I am very grateful to the authors for creating such a masterpiece! I would recommend this bible to beginners and aficionados alike.

THE ESSENTIAL AUDREY HEPBURN PICTURE BOOK.......2002-02-05
One of the rarest and most difficult to find of books on Audrey Hepburn also happens to be one of the very best. Published in a limited run for a series of exhibits for Salvatorre Ferragamo, beginning in Italy and reaching as far as Australia, this book is worth every bit of effort you can muster to locate it. The book offers over 200 pages of dazzling, mostly never before seen photographs. They range from studio shots to film stills to candid shots. The publication aims to present Miss Hepburn's beauty physically, but also succeeds in showing her true, inner beauty with a very intelligent, well put-together text. Aside from the usual biography and filmography are various writings by the people who knew her best. The preface by her son Sean Ferrer sets up the book quite nicely. I could get very technical with descriptions and offer a more serious critique, but I feel that it is not necessary with this book. The book is very inspired and wonderfully edited by Stefania Ricci, but its strength lies in the beautiful pictures of one of the most beautiful women in history. It's all about the pictures with this one. If you are an Audrey Hepburn fan, this is an ESSENTIAL addition to your collection. FIND IT IF YOU CAN.
A Wonderful Tribute to Audrey Hepburn.......2000-03-29
. . a beautiful and touching tribute to Audrey Hepburn, this rare photo book was published for the 1999 exhibition at the Ferragamo Museum in Florence, Italy. This impressive book of 230 pages is packed with color & b/w photos of Hepburn - many of which have never been published before. The text is in both English & Italian and includes tributes from her son Sean Ferrer, her companion Robert Wolders, and her designer Givenchy. The book traces her career and includes a complete filmography. Thirty pages are devoted to the Ferragamo exhibit of clothing worn by Hepburn; sections include stage costumes & accessories, coats & daytime wear, cocktail & dinner dresses, evening dresses, full dresses (including the dresses designed and worn for her 2 weddings). Full color reproductions of magazine covers & movie posters are included. This publication which is produced on premium paper stock.

Excellent Book.......2007-03-10
Great for beginners! I want to learn to draw and look forward to expressing myself. I do not consider myself yet an "artist." However, I bought this book and found it excellent. The instructions are easy to follow and help one obtain very good results. What I need to do is practise. I highly recommend this book.
Cool.......2000-06-03
I love Asian and Oriental paintings, so this is a cool book to learn about art, and how to do it.

Book Description
Drawing on a wide variety of contemporaneous sources from Chinese history, literature, religious writings, and art and literary criticism, Spiro provides the modern reader with an aesthetic and social context for understanding early Chinese portraiture. Contemplating the Ancients introduces portraits that were never intended to be physical likenesses of their subjects and illuminates the meaning they held for the viewers for whom they were made.
Spiro focusses on fourth- and fifth-century sets of almost identi- cal portraits of individuals known collectively in Chinese history as the Seven Worthies of the Bamboo Grove. Unlike the earlier Han dynasty portraits whose messages were universal, these exemplary portraits addressed a specific elitist audience. The subjects of these portraits served as idealized representations for a largely nouvel-arrivé aristocracy.
Spiro examines the complex and sometimes ironic changes that occur when historical individuals are transformed by tradition into classical exemplars. She shows how the visual arts translate ideals of personal character into stylistic cues and how these cues, in turn, affect the values and behavior of human beings.
Book Description
This is a compilation of three plays written in the style of Greek drama. Seek the New Helen takes place in Troy 20 years after Paris seized Helen. A fresh group of Greek soldiers discover Menelaus' daughter, a new beauty with the strength and application to be Helen's successor. The Usurpers takes place in Tiryns, where Tisamenes is the first male ruler in a land where a queen previously always held power. Desperate to find a conflict to prove his claim to the throne, he neglects those in his court who plot to return a woman to power. Tongues of Angels is a contemporary story of a marital breakdown written in the blank verse style typical of Greek dramas.

Customer Reviews:
My overall musicianship has been noticably improved.......2007-04-20
Several years ago, I decided to educate myself in music. I really
wanted to get to the bottom of things, not just learn to play my guitar better. I took lessons from a theory and harmony professor and I interviewed various musicians,
both classical and popular, including jazz and flamenco players.
One conclusion I came to is this: many musicians are either unwilling or unable to explain what they do. I think this is true of both classically trained musicians
and popular musicians.
Glaser, however, seems to be an exception.
He makes it pretty clear what you need to do, and why you need to do it.
For me at least, attempting to master his exercises has been a non-trivial problem.
So far, after several years of intermittent work, I only can do the exercises on
the first and second of the six CDs.
But I've listened to them all, and they contain a lot of interesting information.
I also have another presentation by him, a three-CD set called "Tools for Musicianship", which I also have found interesting. To some extent, this shorter
presentation clarifies the six-CD one.
My intermittent work, however, has improved my musicianship considerably.
I can improvise better, I can transcribe solos from recordings faster, and I can
figure out chord progressions better. I'm sure it has to do with
Glaser's ear training exercises.
One reason I don't give the product a five-star rating, however, is that his guidance about about solfege is not quite clear. He recommends using solfege, but says some people can get along without it. Then he pretty much drops its use in the later chapters.
For me, the solfege syllables have not yet taken root in my mind. They haven't
attached themselves to the melodies in the way he promised they would. In my
case song lyrics do attach themselves to melodies. By solfege syllables don't.
Is it just that I haven't practiced enough? I don't know. I've gone over
his remarks many times, but he just doesn't quite make it clear what to do
if you have trouble.
This is a disappointment, especially compared to the otherwise forthright explanations. Additionally, I should say that even my apparently unsuccessful efforts at learning solfege must have helped my musicianship. SOMETHING did.
I'm also a little puzzled by his approach to Lester Young's solo on "Lady Be Good."
He doesn't supply the original for you to listen to. There are copyright questions and such, I'm sure, but just telling you to go out and buy a vaguely identified original recording is a little frustrating.
But these are small objections compared to the overall value of the material. Eventually I hope to master all his exercises.
