Book Description

Adam Copeland on Edge is what the author describes as "a mental picture." It's also a dream -- "one of many" -- that he decided to realize while at home convalescing from potential career-ending neck surgery. And it's a journey that explores not only his life but also his innermost thoughts.

In the small town of Orangeville, Ontario, Copeland was raised by a loving mother who, while working multiple jobs just to pay the rent, nurtured her son's passion for Spider-Man comics and KISS albums. When a family tragedy created a void in Copeland's life, that void was soon filled by the wrestling legend Hulk Hogan, who "made me feel like I could accomplish anything."

For Copeland, "anything" meant becoming a wrestler, an ambition shared by his friend Jason Reso, who would eventually form the indie tag team Suicide Blondes with Copeland, then join him in WWE as Edge's "brother," Christian. Winning a newspaper essay contest earned Copeland free wrestling training from independent veterans Sweet Daddy Siki and Ron Hutchinson. The author shares his vivid, often outrageous memories of wrestling throughout Canada and the midwestern United States and befriending future WWE Superstars like Terry Richards (Rhyno), Sean Morley (Val Venis), and Chris Jericho. Hard work and persistence brought Copeland to World Wrestling Entertainment. But his "inauspicious" Raw debut -- during which he accidentally knocked out his opponent -- supports his claim that "I had no idea" how to make the transformation to Edge.

Copeland retraces the steps he took to "Edgeucate" himself, from his goth days with the Brood's Christian and Gangrel to ushering in the "E&C Dynasty," which in turn revitalized WWE's Tag Team division (with the aid of the Hardy Boyz, the Dudley Boyz, and countless tables, ladders, and chairs).

With vivid detail and sincerity, Copeland offers his thoughts about not only fulfilling his goals but also building upon them. He shares his actual surprise over winning the Intercontinental title for the first time; the anxiety he felt while splitting up with Christian; his eventual determination "to grab the damn ball out of someone's hands and take off"; the distress of almost losing his long blond hair to Kurt Angle; his wonder over enjoying a brief Tag Team title reign with the icon who first inspired him; the simultaneous pain of a broken marriage and two ruptured discs in his neck; and the nervous energy of returning to Raw in March 2004 and setting his sights on the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better Wrestler Bios out there.......2007-08-06

With Adam "Edge" Copeland really being one of the last major stars to come into the WWE via the indy system that has actually succeeded in the WWE, this book is a great read. Unlike Mick Foley's Have A Nice Day, You can tell Edge had to struggle to get what he wanted out of life and dealt with set-back after set-back. Outside of one minor fact error (referring to a six man tag between Team ECK vs Too Cool at the wrong PPV event), Edge goes into detail about all the major events that helped shaped his career up till mid 2004

5 out of 5 stars Not your typical wrestling autobiography.......2007-03-10

Awesome book, edge doesn't try to pass himself off as the greatest wrestler ever, just tells some rather humorous stories of how he got where he is today

4 out of 5 stars Very entertaining........2006-07-18

This book was a very good read. Edge manages to tell the story of his entire life with very good pacing and keeps it fun to read. Unlike most wrestling related books he never goes into long boring stories about his training methods or anything like that. If youre a fan of Edge or of wrestling in general Id recommend this.

3 out of 5 stars Edge: Rated "B-" AUTHOR.......2006-04-22

For a 1st time Author Edge does good for himself but its clear from the start that his story telling is more surface level and not really going to get very deeper than that.
For exsample his "birth" as Edge , basicly the start of his success was barly touched on .
The most interesting aspect of this book was the experiences he incountered on route to becoming a WWF/E superstar.
His tales are told in a very entertaining and humorious manner ,but the humor does tend to get old towards the end possably not helpt by reading the book in the one 3 hr sitting .
Thoughts on and about the Hardys esp Matt prove very interesting all things now considered as with the mentioning of Lita .

4 out of 5 stars Very good read.......2006-04-19

This book was incredibly good, even if you aren't an Edgehead. He's not one of my all time favorites, but I am a collector of wrestling books, and this one was better than most. It was written by Edge himself in long hand, and is a very entertaining and humorous read. Even though I don't approve to what he has done with the whole Lita situation, this book shows that deep down, he has good character.

The mass media make it possible for fame to be enhanced and transformed posthumously. What does it mean to fans when a celebrity dies, and how can death change the way that celebrities are perceived and celebrated? How do we mourn and remember? What can different forms of communication reveal about the role of media in our lives?

Through a provocative look at the lives and legacy of popular musicians from Elvis to Tupac and from Louis Prima to John Lennon, Afterlife as Afterimage analyzes the process of posthumous fame to give us new insights into the consequences of mediation, and it illuminates the complex nature of fandom, community formation, and identity construction.

5 out of 5 stars Quick and to-the-point for beginners.......2000-09-13

I am surprised to see this book getting only one star by a couple of reviewers - they must have been disappointed that the book is very simplistic and meant to be a to-the-point, easy-to-follow beginner's book. I thought the book was great. It quickly explained to me how music is made up of notes from chosen chord progressions and scales. I love the book because it is short and written in boldy formatted paragraphs with diagrams of piano keys and guitar frets. It's a small, slim hardcover book so it's great to take along and read over coffee. It is a very basic book but it does what few writers are able to do: say exactly what needs to be said in as short a time space as possible! I think the author did a great job. I am now searching for my second music theory book, to keep learning about how music is actually created.

3 out of 5 stars for beginners only.......1999-05-28

If you bear in mind that this is intended (or seems to be intended) for those with only a very rudimentary knowledge of music, you'll be less likely to be disappointed with it. The actual materials of melody are of course scales and chords. To learn about scalar material you are probably not familiar with (not matter how extensive your knowledge of music) I recommend PENTATONIC SCALES FOR THE JAZZ-ROCK KEYBOARDIST by Jeff Burns.

1 out of 5 stars The title is a joke!.......1999-05-24

At last I thought, a book that teaches me how to create melodies. What a disappointment. Weissman doesn't explain how to use or develop a motif. Nor does he explain how to develop a melody or to generate prosody between the melody and the lyrics. The best book on writing melodies I've read is by Jai Josefs"writing music for hit songs'. The best book that brings every aspect of songwriting together is John Braheny's "The craft and business of songwriting'. For lyric writing I'd recommend all three of Pat Pattisson's books. I'd study Braheny's book first (In his lyric section he covers all the important aspects of Sheila Davis's 'the craft of lyric writing' and 'writing succesful lyrics')plus adding a lot of other ideas. Moreover, the book helps you to develop your creativity. After studying John's book I'd move on to Pat and Jai to get more detailed information about lyric and Music writing.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time on this book........1998-12-10

As a long-time professional musician who wanted to hone his songwriting skills in order to produce songs that were more aesthetically and commercially pleasing, I recently searched through songwriting books for help and guidance. At first, this book's title seemed promising--there didn't seem to be any other books focusing on the creation of melody. I expected an in-depth study offering insight and inspiration. It turned out to be a profound disappointment. Weissman comes across as a nice, well-meaning man, so I feel hesitant to excoriate his book, but his treatment of melody is superficial and prosaic. There's nothing in this book that a moderately gifted 5-year-old couldn't figure out by banging on a piano; it's based on the most rudimentary music theory, and is quite unimaginative at that. A complete novice might find something useful in this book, but even he/she would be better served by reading other books. I strongly recommend getting a good music theory book, and checking out books by Braheny, Leikin, Citron and Sheila Davis. They have everything Weissman has and much more, and presented much more skillfully. If you're serious about your songwriting, do it right!

        Book Description

Written by a physicist with professional dance training, Physics and the Art of Dance explains how dancers can achieve better, safer performances through an understanding of physics in motion. Using simple, non-technical terms, Kenneth Laws combines his knowledge of both physics and dance to describe how the laws of gravity, momentum, and energy affect dancing bodies. The book explores the natural laws that govern the subtleties of balance, the techniques of leaps and pirouettes, and the impressive lifts and turns executed by ballet partners. Finally, Laws offers insight into two current discussions in the dance world--the effect of body size on ballet technique, and the relationship between science and the art of dance. Beautiful, original stop-action photographs by Martha Swope, along with clear diagrams, illustrate the concepts described in the text. Plus, an intriguing "puzzler" at the beginning of each chapter provides an engaging entree into the topics presented. For those who want a more advanced understanding of the physics, extensive appendices are provided. This new book combines the best features of Laws's widely acclaimed The Physics of Dance and Physics, Dance, and the Pas de Deux by Laws and Cynthia Harvey. Its expert application of the basic principles of physics to the art of dance will be an invaluable resource for dancers and dance instructors and will open a new level of appreciation for lovers of the form. It will also appeal to physicists who seek to include the arts in their scientific pursuits.

5 out of 5 stars Sara Michelle .......2006-05-30

I am a teenaged ballet student. I LOVED THIS BOOK. It helped me in my study of ballet in so many ways: understanding, balancing, executing movements, creating the illusions, improving my technique, and on and on. I love how the book is written, because it is easy to understand even if you are not a Physicist (but it also has Scientific material and some pages with the math and physics illustrated in equations, etc., as well). The chapters engage you with a question or puzzle that you have to solve. This makes you want to hurry up to get to the end of each chapter to see if your guesses were correct. You will learn how to create the illusion of floating in your grand jetes. You will learn how dancers suspend their movement that receives a 'gasp' from the audience that happens whenever something is held beyond what seems possible or expected. It is a book I needed in order to get beyond my limits as a dancer.

5 out of 5 stars As Much Science As The Dancer Ever Should Need........2005-11-21

The question of how a knowledge of the science behind the movement of the human body helps students of dance learn to dance better is always discussed. Like the author, I too am both a physicist and a ballet dancer. I have found that the most important thing to learn in ballet is the imagery that works for you, and sometimes science can actually get in the way. Take walking for example: if we had to analyze ever movement in walking we would never be able to move. I should also point out that science still does not thoroughly understand walking, let alone dancing! Still, it is helpful in some places to understand, at least a little, what is happening in a movement or static pose. This book does a surprisingly fine job of covering most of the pertinent topics and some topics you would not have thought of asking about. I liked the fact that the author does not over simplify some topics, which is often done in elementary explanations. Science usually tries to abstract and simplify in order to explain phenomena, but this can lead to problems. Take, for example, the case of static balance on a point. If you approximate the human body as a rigid body, it is impossible to explain stable equilibrium on a point. Rigid bodies can only achieve unstable equilibrium over a point. But human beings are not rigid! In ballet, we can achieve stable balance over a point for an indefinite period of time(it is very difficult and rarely seen in performance but often in ballet class). This book actually mentions this and explains how it is done. It even includes a discussion of how much a cushioned floor will reduce shock to the dancer's joints. Many illustrations and photos are also included. This is the best book available on this subject, and for those who want to explore this topic further, this is the best place to start.

        Book Description

Although the importance of Elvis Presley's Southern heritage has long been recognized, few have considered the complex connection between the performer's career and his Southern roots. This study investigates how that identity affected each stage of Presley's career.
Elvis Presley's career can be divided into three phases, each of which is signified by a specific image. Each image is coded by a certain style of music, mode of dress, and arena of performance. The evolution from one career phase to another was instigated by a specific event and represented a deliberate calculation on the part of Presley's manager to attract a wider audience.
The first stage spans the years 1956 through 1958, after the singer was introduced to a national audience and before he was drafted into the army. His image as a notorious rock 'n' roller created a national controversy and was spurred by negative depictions of Presley in the media-many attributing his controversial performing style and appearance to his Southern background. His music was a fusion of rhythm and blues and country-western; or, two types of music indigenous to the South and foreign to the mainstream entertainment industry based in New York City. The second phase of Elvis' career included his stint as a movie star, in which most aspects of his Southern identity were extracted from his leading man image to enhance his appeal to the mainstream. And, finally, the last stage of his career focused on his image as a Las Vegas performer. Despite the gaudy costumes, Elvis reconnected to his identity as a Southerner in the 1970s by returning to country music and songwriters as a source of inspiration. Bibliography. Index

5 out of 5 stars A must for any Elvis fan........1999-06-01

This is a new interpretation of Elvis'career, based on the fact that he was from the South, and that makes this book different from others. Also, it is a serious look at Elvis from this angle, but it does not trash him. It offers a kinder interpretation of his film career than most authors offer. I highly recommend this book to any Elvis enthusiast. Even if you are not an Elvis fan you will enjoy this book.
