More of an easy to read reference book than one of those long-winded pregnancy "manuals," this book is fantastic! Every possible concern and question I had was answered clearly and quickly. Dr. Poliakin also addresses hundreds of things I hadn't thought of and I'm sure I will go back to this book over and over again for the answer to different questions. I highly recommend this book to any woman who is expecting. As a side note: I left the book laying around the house and my husband picked it up and has since read it cover to cover - so he liked it too.

I got this book from a friend as a gift and I absolutely love it. It has answered so many of my questions and I constantly refer back to it. This book by far has been my favorite pregnancy book and I would recommend it to everyone.

My husband and I had two other baby name books but when we got this one we found it quite helpful to find out what surveys had said what their impressions of the name were. We are using this book as a guideline now for choosing our baby's name. I would recommend it.

useless.........2006-08-09

Three years when I was pregnant with my daughter, I bought this book at our local book store. I had always loved the name Sophia so, that was where I turned to forst. When I scanned through the meaning I got down to when negative conotations might be associated with oy I was apalled!! It said that the name could make people think of a black maid!? WHAT??? I returned the book the next day. I still named her Sofia. My thought is if you like a name...who cares what other people will think (as long as it'a not a name like Pilot Inspecktor or something crazy like that!!).

There are only 3 books needed for choosing the perfect baby name and this is one of them.

This book is based upon one of the largest studies ever done on people's opinion of names. I've noticed that some say that this book is outdated, but I would beg to differ. Even now [2005] opinions seem to be very similar as they were in 1998 when I first used this book.

My suggestion to any parent looking for the best name for their baby is this book, a baby name definition book, and a name popularity book. By having the three so-named books, any parent can make an informed decision for naming their baby.

My suggestions are as follows:
1) The Baby Name Survey Book
2) The Baby Name Wizard
3) 75,000+ Baby Names for the 21st Century

Misinformation abounds.......2005-03-03

I have not read the actual book - there is a website - www.americanbaby.com - that says is using the book as a source for meanings of names. I can tell you that many of the names of Slavic origin are either partially or completely wrong. I got p.o.-ed enough to look up the book on Amazon and post this. I can't vouch for the rest of the names, but have these people done any research?

Baby Name Survey Book Fills Important Niche.......2004-04-26

This book isn't a total baby name sourcebook, nor is it intended to be. With so many baby name lists online (by popularity, meaning, ethnicity, etc.,) this turned out to be the only name book I bought. The Survey Book gave me a reliable "outside" perspective as we considered names during my pregnancy, when I didn't trust my own judgement during the raging hormone storms or even suspected family members of having an agenda! It also gave me a diplomatic way to eliminate some the less appealing suggestions. ("I really LIKE the name Humperdink, but the book says that it suggests 'smelly' and 'effete'.") The list is not complete and some of the names are outdated, but if another expanded edition is published, I will definately purchase it before naming a second child.

Many composers--Mozart, Verdi, Durufle, Faure--have written settings of the requiem, the Roman Catholic mass for the dead, and the listener can find a score for every taste, from the bombastic to the reflective. In this 1865 composition, Johannes Brahms took a different tack. Instead of using the familiar texts of the Latin Mass, Brahms chose to write a German requiem with a decidedly evangelical tack. Using texts from the German translation of the Bible--beginning with a phrase from the Beatitudes and ending with the Revelation of St. John the Divine ("Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord …") Brahms created one of the most comforting works of its kind ever written. (There are few greater evocations of heavenly bliss than No. 4, the chorus sung in English as "How lovely is thy dwelling place.") You can see how he did it with this full orchestral score from Dover. Dover scores are short on bells and whistles--not to mention English translations--but if your primary interest is in the music and how it was put together, you will find this a valuable tool at a bargain price.

If you love choral music, you have to love Brahms; if you love Brahms, you have to love his Requiem. It is obvious why this work brought him broad recognition: it is touching and inspiring. This is a must-have.

The best requiem ever written.......2001-03-18

Dover does an extraordinary job in developing a quite accurate version of the German Requiem. Many consider this piece to be one of the best written in the Romantic Era. Brahms's originality and experimentation between the marriage of both the orchestra and chorus make this piece absolutely one of a kind. Strongly recommended for any listener and Dover's flawless edition is the best around if the listener wants to see the piece as Brahms visioned it.

Brahms' German Requiem is his best vocal work. Unlike the typical mass of the 18th and 19th centuries, This mass is not in Latin but in German. If anyone owns of a recording of this work, owning this score will greatley enrich your pleasure. This is indespensible for the Brahms fan. The notes are fairly small but easy to read, and there is ample room for your own notations. If you want to see a masters work in full force, buy this copy!
