Upgrade.......2007-02-13

This is a nice upgrade from the previous editions. If you are buying this for a college class like me, go ahead and get this newest edition. Nothing is left out that was in previous versions, but the format is a bit better, with more content for better understanding.

We've heard about the Hollywood Ten and other Communists and those suspected of Communist activities who sought haven in Mexico in the 1950s. What happened to these people and their families as they struggled to earn a living in an alien culture, always fearful of being deported? Diana Anhalt, who was 10 years old when her parents left the Bronx for Mexico City, has tracked down many of these people and their families whom she knew from her childhood. The stories she tells sound like they could have come from the movie scripts and other writings of the fugitives who gathered in Mexico. As a witness, she makes their stories come alive in a very personal book.

A solid reference and historical narrative.......2002-04-10

A Gathering Of Fugitives: American Political Expatriates In Mexico 1948-1965 by Diana Anhalt is a solid reference and historical narrative about a group of Americans (ranging from Spanish Civil War veterans, Communist Party organizers, Hollywood activists, and other post-World War II political dissidents) who went through political exile and expatriation in Mexico for a variety of different reasons. Their individual and community struggles to adapt, political clashes, along with the personal stories of some who returned to America are all covered in-depth in this most remarkable and recommended study.

We should learn from our past.......2002-01-09

I was motivated to read Diana Anhalt's book in almost one sitting. Having grown up in the setting she describes but being well sheltered from the events, I am very impressed by her very thorough research into the smallest details of the events. She is objective and points out the extent to which governments, including our own and not excluding others, will go to in order to protect their current objectives. It makes us painfully aware of how much we should or should not allow our government to do in the name of expediency.

Important and terrifically readable.......2002-01-02

The fate of creative Americans trapped in the McCarthy mulcher of the early 50s is well-known, but in this splendid volume Diana Anhalt sheds much-needed light on an unfamiliar aspect of that era. Here we meet lesser lights who chose to flee their homeland and take up residence in Mexico, in a tightly-knit community of the similarly beset. This is not a scholarly treatise but a deeply personal, moving account of innocents abroad. Will appeal to the general reader in addition to those with a particular interest in this period, and is highly recommended.

Lionel Trilling was a professor of English at Columbia. These essays consider a variety of literary figures.

E.M. Forster, writing about his aunt, Marianne Thornton, had family connections to the Clapham Sect. The great Clapham families, Wilberforces, Macaulays, Stephenses were not dull and narrow. Like the Darwins and Wedgewoods, his family, the Thorntons, were non-aristocratic.

It has been contended that Zola suffered from comparison with his disciples. It is not much honor to be responsible for Heinrich Mann, Theodore Dreiser, Frank Norris, Arnold Bennett, Jules Romains. Most naturalist authors are dull. Stendahl and Flaubert created personal legends. Zola did not.

Trilling calls Robert Graves's GOOD-BYE TO ALL THAT a youthful autobiography, a separate English genre. He terms Graves a first rate secondary figure. ETHAN FROME satisfies snobbishness about tragedy and pain. It is a cruel book. Edith Wharton deserves respect, but she had limitations. Charles Dickens and Jane Austen are the two great novelists of England. Dostoyevsky learned from Dickens.

To Trilling, (at the time of the writing of the essay Wilson was an editor at the NEW REPUBLIC), Edmund Wilson is the ideal of the literary life. Wilson's love of literature is paramount. Trilling feels that Wilson had an undoctrinaire love of print. In the thirties Trilling was working on a book about Matthew Arnold. From Wilson he got the sense that he was working on something pertaining to the present.

The essayist opines that in America intellect has associated itself with power, a unique stance. National populations are geological formations of culture. The literary intellectual may be mistaken in seeing an inert American mass resistant to ideas. Trilling identifies David Riesman's THE LONELY CROWD as a terribly important book. Riesman does not assert scientific neutrality. He seeks to discover the social causes of political attitudes. Riesman resembles a classic novelist.

F.R. Leavis is notably a moralist and a critic. Leavis says forthrightly that Barnes's NIGHTWOOD has no value, V. Woolf's art is minor, MOLL FLANDERS is not great, HARD TIMES is. In the case of Dickens, he believes that novels other than HARD TIMES harbor irrelevant life. Trilling credits C.P. Snow with having a sense of social fact.

All in all the collection is certainly worth a reader's careful attention in order to stimulate literary appreciation.
