5 out of 5 stars What to Charge -- the most practical book you'll read.......2002-04-06

The blurb on the back of the book is right! What to Charge is one of the most practical books you'll ever read. It provides a wealth of concrete information for freelancers and consultants on how to negotiate a fair price for themselves -- and for their clients. Based on the information in the book, I accepted my first freelance writing job on a per word instead of per hour payment basis -- and ended up making three times an hour what I would have! I did not have to negotiate these rates, I simply chose the more profitable of two options offered me by the company based on information from the book about how to estimate the price of a job. It's essential reading for new and experienced freelancers.

5 out of 5 stars Price It Right.......2000-03-01

"Am I asking enough for this job?" "Will I lose the job if I ask for more?" "How often can I raise my rates?" If these and other pricing questions have ever bedeviled you, What to Charge will remove some of the guess work for you. Clearly, concisely, and with many examples, Laurie Lewis discusses how to develop a successful pricing strategy, analyze pricing decisions, negotiate rates with clients, and avoid pricing pitfalls. With suggestions that are simple, practical, and easy to follow, this book gives sound advice for overcoming the "How much should I charge?" dilemma and is a "must" for would-be consultants and experienced freelancers alike.

5 out of 5 stars Answers THE question freelancers struggle with ..........2000-01-18

Deciding what to charge is a basic issue freelancers struggle with constantly. As a soon-to-be freelance editor and proofreader, I found this book immensely useful AND inspiring. On a practical level, it offers a truly rational approach to setting consulting fees--no matter what field you're in. Second, and most importantly, it teaches you not to undervalue yourself and, consequently, your services.Any freelance consultant, even the most experienced, will find much of value in this book!

Download Description

Professional media corporations have discovered streaming is a cheap and easy way to broadcast content, as a fee-based service or as a marketing and advertising vehicle for traditional media distribution outlets. Other industries have tapped its potential for distance learning, corporate communications or on-line media events, like a shareholder's meeting. Today's challenge is not can you build a system to deliver audio and video over the Internet, but should you. The Business of Streaming and Digital Media gives readers a concise and direct analysis of the successes to capture and the pitfalls to avoid as they build the internet-focused portion of their distribution system.

2 out of 5 stars Not useful for businesses with a general consumer focus.......2006-08-28

This book had one welcome feature that I have never seen before - the email, personal web site, and phone number of the author, Dan Rayburn. Unfortunately, while I read this book in order to better understand the business models involved with selling media online the content is almost entirely focused on companies that wish to use streaming media for internal purposes such as training videos.

While this is of course a perfectly legitimate application of streaming media, it is not useful if you are planning to serve a consumer market. Moreover, there are disconcerting moments within the text where a survey done by Rayburn's company is discussed at length, only to conclude that it was not definitive, and more work needs to be done to draw conclusions. That sort of prevaricating makes the entire book seem more like an extended white paper or MBA student report than a definitive guide by a knowledgeable expert. The common-sense advice of later chapters (know your customer, calculate an ROI, etc) does nothing to dispell this impression.

Overall, this book would be moderately useful for a neophyte looking to manage the implementation of an internal video streaming service. But if you are looking at the consumer market or you have basic business and technology experience, it provides little new knowledge.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2005-09-30

As President/CEO of my own company, I found this book invaluable. I've read other streaming video books and this roadmap for efficient and effective video delivery is the best I've read. The emphasis on ROI in the context of "cutting edge" technologies was perhaps the most beneficial attribute of the book to my company. That said, the A-Z mechanics of implimenting streaming video or improving one's existing streaming video business model were extremely informative. I highly recommend this book to anyone considering digital media or to those currently using the technology with thoughts of streamlining and economizing their existing video delivery process. Dan Rayburn a guy worth listening to!

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading..........2005-09-29

I really liked this book. This book is very easy-to-use and has an easy-to-understand style. It provides Account Managers & Media Planners a working knowledge of the tools and analyses for which these technologies will affect running a new media department. The real world examples are priceless.

I found that it makes all the proper recommendations and that this book is a must-read for anyone in the Streaming or Web conferencing space.

I make it required reading for anyone on my sales or account management teams.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to the business of streaming media.......2005-09-19

There are far too few books out on the subject of streaming media, especially ones that are up to date after "the dot bomb" of a couple years back. Dan Rayburn's book is an excellent introduction to the industry for anyone trying to get his or her bearings. The study included in the appendix is also quite helpful and timely.

5 out of 5 stars DRSULO.......2005-09-18

This is a must read for anyone evaluating whether or not streaming is right for their business regardless of their organizations size. It gives you examples, backed by case studies, what has worked and more importantly what hasn't. Knowing what to avoid while considering your options, in many cases is as important as how to go to market. Understanding that will enable businesses to deploy that much faster and begin taking advantage of this technology, enabling them to begin to monitize on their strategy. I look forward to future publications.

        Book Description

Online audio and video, technology deployed initially by media companies seeking to deliver on-demand content and programming, is beginning to transform the Web into a platform that companies can use to deliver multimedia marketing messages, customer support, and other consumer-focused information. These emerging applications are creating a new class of non-traditional media unique to broadband with the potential to both enhance corporate marketing efforts and boost consumer demand for high-speed access services. Along the way, the rise of "on-demand marketing" enabled by online audio and video will create a substantial new stream of marketing revenue for the Web market. This evolution is giving birth to a new Internet market sector, BtoBtoC streaming media, which can be defined as businesses in the streaming media industry that sell audio and video tools and services to other businesses that, in turn, use the technology to streamline the ways they communicate with their customers. It encompasses not only the delivery of commercials inserted in online media programming but also the offering of multimedia infomercials, product installation instructions, and other relevant corporate content that users can retrieve on an on-demand basis. BtoBtoC streaming media also represents a powerful new tool at the disposal of advertisers pursuing closed-loop marketing strategies that aim to capitalize on the synergies possible from coordinating traditional marketing efforts with the interactive selling capabilities of the Web.

              Book Description

The use of e-mail, Web conferencing and streaming media in corporate sales and marketing has helped thousands of businesses significantly increase sales at considerably lower customer acquisition costs in the past year. This report analyzes the key vendors and service providers for e-mail, Web conferencing and streaming media communications. It also examines how enterprises use these communications tools in their sales and marketing efforts and outlines several examples and case studies. Actual case study results presented in this report include a 77 percent reduction in sales lead generation costs by an enterprise software company; 10 to 15 percent increases in conversion rates by an online retailer and a 50 percent reduction in sales cycle times by an equipment financing company. The markets for each of the three technologies are expanding significantly. Enterprises implementing marketing solutions correctly are achieving impressive results in generating new sales leads and converting them into customers. Exhibit 1 shows the primary objectives pursued through e-mail marketing, Web conferencing and streaming media solutions.
