    Book Description

The automobile continues to be the privileged product of the culture of mass consumption, yet there has been little scholarly attention to what concerns consumers most-- the appearance of cars. b /b b i Auto-Opium /i /b is the first comprehensive history of the profession and aesthetics of American automobile design. David Gartman reveals how the appearance of vehicles became an integral part of the system of mass production and mass consumption forged in the struggles of American society. br br The book traces the development of automobile design, from the first utilitarian cars around the turn of the century to the most modern of symbol-laden cultural icons. The author shows that the aesthetic qualities of vehicles were shaped by the social conflicts generated by the process of mass production. These conflicts became channeled into the realm of mass consumption, where working Americans demanded beautiful, stylish, and constantly improving cars to compensate them for the deprivations of mass production. Combining a unique blend of business, social, and cultural history, b /b b i Auto-Opium /i /b connects the social struggles of designers within firms and the marketplace struggles between auto firms.

    Book Description

Cars in the Age of Aquarius During a decade of tumultuous change that gave us disco and optional 8-track tape decks, the seventies would also witness the demise of muscle cars and the birth of the economy car. And with an influx of imports from Europe and Japan there was more choice than ever. 70s Cars has them all—from luxury models like the Cadillac Eldorado convertable, Chysler Cordoba (with rich Corinthian leather!), and a "smaller" Lincoln Versailles, to fuel-conscious subcompacts like the Pinto, Vega, "Le Car," and the Datsun 210. Also featured in this collection of over 175 auto advertisements are the AMC Gremlin, Ford Futura, Oldsmobile Cutlass, Plymouth Volaré, Subaru ("not a Japanese Beetle"), and Volkswagen Rabbit.

    2 out of 5 stars Underwhelming.......2007-01-10

This is one of those cheap international books that isn't even published in America! I feel robbed. The text is in English however the introduction is in multiple languages, which, in my opinion takes away from what I thought would be a book on the splendor of American steel. I was also most interested in reading the actual text of the ads and the books was so small that reading the text proved difficult quite often.

While these books would make a good inexpensive gift for an automobile enthusiast or graphic artist/advertising executive friend, I would hesitate to add them to my own library. Be careful of all books produced under Jim Helmann as all are like this and are foreign produced.

2 out of 5 stars A mediocre compilation of shop design tips........1999-04-10

While David H Jacobs' book provides a start for the design and building your workshop, it falls short of completing the task he set out to accomplish. The book starts with a beautiful example of a dream shop on the cover, but no further mention is made of this shop leading to a disappointment of the content between the covers. Many pictures are included showing examples of frayed wires, missing outlet covers, cluttered benches, and construction that wouldn't pass code in many areas. While there are a few good ideas to incorporate into a shop, I would not encourage the novice to design a new shop solely on the examples in this book. David tries to cover too much area in a small book. His time might have been better spent on automobile related tips and less on construction. There are plenty of books available that do a much better job showing good construction techniques. Show more innovative home shops and less high dollar, cluttered, and dirty commercial buildings.

From the supplier: There were no major automobile insurance reform measures implemented throughout the US during 1997 but several minor changes were proposed. Some states had plans to refine their no fault insurance programs. There were also plans to implement programs that limit rights to sue while decreasing insurance premium rates.

            Product Description

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a “borderless world”, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "commercial auto insurance" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

              Product Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for commercial auto insurance across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for commercial auto insurance. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study covers the latent demand outlook for commercial auto insurance across the states, union territories and cities of India. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across over 5,000 cities in India. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it?s state or union territory and of India as a whole is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-?-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state or union territory and city, latent demand estimates are created for commercial auto insurance. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. 2 out of 5 stars Useless.......2000-06-14

This book is geared narrowly towards Church groups. I bought this book on Amazon, and I never knew that it was for Churches until I received the book. I figured there might be ideas in the book that could work for my organization as well. You'd think there would be, but there wasn't. Even if my organization WAS a church group, there are few feasible fundraising options in this book. It is unrealistic as far as fundraising goes.

4 out of 5 stars Great Ideas - Good Resource.......2000-05-09

This book had wonderful ideas for youth groups interested in fundraising. Although it is geared (in language and ethic) toward church groups, I adapted the text to use the ideas with inner-city kids. Some of the suggestions are a little far-fetched, such as the Pink Flamingo heist (where you send a letter to everyone in the neighborhood announcing that a pink flamingo (yes, the plastic kind!) will arrive on their lawn and they have a day to get rid of it and pass it on to someone else. They can avoid this by purchasing "Pink Flamingo Insurance" which will "protect" them from the gag, hence the fundraising aspect...). That wouldn't go over too well in most communities! It's worth checking this book out - it's very creative, at the least. Something for everyone.

                          Product Description

This electronic book on CD-ROM provides a unique and comprehensive collection of federal government documents and references about the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, including programs for child care and support, Head Start, child abuse and neglect, adoption and foster care, and much more. A focus of this disc: the Administration on Children, Youth and Families (ACYF), which administers the major Federal programs that support social services that promote the positive growth and development of children and youth and their families; protective services and shelter for children and youth in at-risk situations; child care for working families and families on public assistance; and adoption for children with special needs. These programs provide financial assistance to States, community-based organizations, and academic institutions to provide services, carry out research and demonstration activities and undertake training, technical assistance, and information dissemination. The Administration on Children, Youth and Families is a part of the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), under the Department of Health and Human Services, and is administered by a Commissioner who is a Presidential appointee. ACYF is divided into four bureaus, each of which is responsible for different issues involving children, youth and families and a cross-cutting unit responsible for research and evaluation. Each of ACYF's bureaus is headed by an Associate Commissioner. The Administration for Children and Families (ACF), within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is responsible for federal programs that promote the economic and social well-being of families, children, individuals, and communities. ACF programs aim to achieve the following: families and individuals empowered to increase their own economic independence and productivity; strong, healthy, supportive communities that have a positive impact on the quality of life and the development of children; partnerships with individuals, front-line service providers, communities, American Indian tribes, Native communities, states, and Congress that enable solutions which transcend traditional agency boundaries; services planned, reformed, and integrated to improve needed access; and a strong commitment to working with people with developmental disabilities, refugees, and migrants to address their needs, strengths, and abilities. FUNDING OF ACF PROGRAMS--FORMULA AND DISCRETIONARY GRANTS - ACF awards mandatory or "formula" grants, as well as discretionary grants. Federal agencies are required by statute to award formula grants to states, the District of Columbia, and federally recognized Tribes and Territories. Discretionary grants permit the federal government to exercise judgment or "discretion" in selecting the applicant/recipient organization through a competitive grant process. The states, the District of Columbia, federally recognized Tribes and Territories, and public and private not-for-profit agencies/organizations may apply in accordance with the requirements in the program announcements.
