1 out of 5 stars If You Are a Complete Idiot, This Book is For You.......2001-03-08

Believe the title! If you read BusinessWeek and have Internet access, this book is a waste of your time. While it defines the most basic terms of the Internet and investing (which you already know if you read the business section of your newspaper or a business magazine), it does not explain the more intricate methods of investing. The book is really a compendium of web sites. For example, instead of explaining HOW TO DO fundamental analysis, it tells you to go read a web site. Save your money. Search the web at www.dogpile.com with the term "investing" and get the same results free, in an instant.

4 out of 5 stars Road Map for beginners.......2000-12-31

I am a self-confessed rank beginner in the world of investing in general and online investing in particular.

This book starts you off with the REAL basics - ie assuming no knowledge of connecting to the internet (admittedly tedious for most these days...) and then guides you by the hand through various websites where enourmous amounts of information are found...

I don't imagine it is the almanac of investing for a moment...but it doesn't promise to be either. More of a roadmap - showing what's out and about to use as you get more proficient at investing.

I would like to see what an actual trader thinks of it...but seems to be a refreshingly unpretentious place to start for the utterly confused...if not completely idiotic.

5 out of 5 stars very helpful!.......2000-04-25

This book was a lifesaver when I decided to jump into the waters of investing. With chapters to devoted to different aspects of investing, it was very easy to find exactly what I was looking for. And the book didn't stop with definitions like so many of the books I picked up -- it told me where to go on the Web to apply what I'd learned. This book is great for anyone that knows they should be investing, but who needs that extra "push" to get moving!

2 out of 5 stars Too much of a spoonfeed!.......1999-06-09

OK, the book says it is for idiot's but come on, don't mean that literally! If you are a wee bit technical and understand the online world this book has a few chapters you can easily skip. Also, the author does not care to explain stuff like index funds, the various industry indexes, etc. The book has a load of good web links in it though. I wish the author had listed all the links at the end of the book in an appendix.

You can live without this book. The same information is available for free online.

2 out of 5 stars Outdated, but could be helpful to the complete idiots.......2004-03-10

You gotta remember that this book was written in 2000, right around the time the dotcom bubble burst. Of course you didn't have to be amazon or ebay to survive the bloodbath, as many small independent shopping sites have been doing quite well.

This book doesn't tell you how to come up with a good idea -- I doubt anyone can really tell you, since successful entrepreneurship is seeded totally on individual creativity. (Disclosure: I myself am still trying to come up with the mother of all "how come I didn't think of that" ideas.) It's more about how to set up an e-commerce site, but the information is already outdated now that four years have passed. Still, it could be an informative read if you are truly clueless about e-commerce.

1 out of 5 stars Bridge for Sale.......2003-06-05

Is this Rod Underhill related to Roy Underhill? I see they're credited together for writing quite a few books together. Even if I was married to this guy his book isn't very good. Maybe he should stick to woodworking.

1 out of 5 stars hey, if you're interested in this book..........2001-06-09

Did you know that gullible was printed twice in the 1996 Merriam Webster dictionary?

5 out of 5 stars Pennies from Heaven?.......2000-06-20

Can gold still be found in the DotCom mines of the year 2000? Evidently so, but intrepid miners have to make some choices. Join somebody's team early on and hope for the best and perhaps find "founder" millions? Join late in the game but arrive at a decent long term career? Or go for broke and start you own start up and try to become the next Bill Gates? Okay, maybe try not to become so successful that the Gov't cuts your business in two, but maybe collect a few hundred million dollars in the process.

Stock options, bad internet biz ideas, and other pitfalls are cheerfully explained in this very well researched book. If you are getting just a little jealous about how you keep hearing that some goofball you went to high school with just made a few million at a DOTCOM, this book will give you both a reality check and a head start at the same time. That's no easy feat to pull off.

Plus, the jokes aren't too terrible.

5 out of 5 stars Reading between the lines........2001-02-19

You can read a book by reading it on the surface or reading it deeperbetween the lines. If your a surface reader then this book may beconsidered good. If you have any depth at all to read between thelines then the book is very, very good. I am a 'techno-geek' and Ithink that the real value is buried very deep between the lines. Iwas given the book as a lark by a friend but I must say these guysseem to understand the fundamentals of the tech business better thansome of the guys running the big tech shops. Maybe Nortel... andCisco should pick up a copy and read it before they bleed to death.Maybe they should have read it last year.

5 out of 5 stars A good book.......2001-01-28

I can't stand reviews in general but the negative ones on this book suck. This is an unusually good starter book on e-commerce. Note I said starter...not expert (read the title). I like the approach and the content. I can't find more than a couple of references to the authors websites and if you've ever listen to a Comdex keynote, self promotion is the name of this game anyways. The fact that they only made a few references is surprising in this day and age. Here's what's good and bad. The good is the forward looking stuff. The bad is that this stuff dates very fast (it needs an updating especially website references). The basic stuff on business design is good but the stock stuff is maybe better suited for a book on the stock market. It's a bit slow at the start and that's bad but picks up the pace after the first chapter and that's good. If you do e-commerce, buy the book and you'll learn something unless your some kind of freakin e-wonderboy. But then you wouldn't be reading a "Complete Idiot's Guide now would ya?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent E-comm Resource.......2000-12-21

This book is a valuable resource for people starting a tech company or running one from the business side. I thought it was worth the money and feel that there are lot's of valuable hints especially in the 'landmines lurking on the net' area. I got great value out of the concepts hidden deep in the pages. The 'links' to online resources are dated and the writing could be better at the start but overall the theory is great.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Good High Level Book.......2000-12-19

This book has a great deal of useful insite and information especially if you can read between the lines. The content is solid for those who understand business. The connection between business and technology is very useful for today since most .com wannabes have totally missed the point of how the technology has to make business sense to be profitable. If your totally clueless as to the meaning of profit then you'll miss the point of the book. I think everyone can find something useful in its pages to apply to their business. It needs some updating but is still very relevant. The authors also had enough vision to forsee the Nasdaq fall and a couple of future 'landmines' that are now coming true.

1 out of 5 stars A Waste of Time.......2000-12-13

While not exactly an Idiot, I'm not a techno-geek either. Somehow this book manages to dodge both ends of the spectrum and provides little value to anyone in either category. The main purpose of the book seems to be endless self-promotion for the author's personal web site. I could accept that had they actually provided good examples of how they built a successful ecommerce web site. Unfortunately they don't have that direct experience and instead constantly refer to the success of sites like Amazon.com as an example, and then they don't provide any revealing insight as to how how Amazon's success was established.

        Book Description

This book is an excellent resource if you have little or no investment or technological background, but want to learn how to make money in Internet and Internet-related stocks. It explains the whole ".com" phenomenon and will teach you how to watch traditional blue-chip companies for optimum investment opportunities.

        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Lambs Being Led to the Slaughter.......2000-12-21

Taking people with little investment experience and little technology knowledge and teaching them a little about investing in Internet stocks is inappropriate at best. That's like entering elderly people who move slowly into the running of the bulls in Pamplona. People are going to get hurt. Avoid this subject, and this book.

Here are some of the observations the author makes. "Investing in Internet stocks makes good sense." "With information, intelligence, and patience, you will be successfully investing in Internet stocks." "Investors willing to step out just a little on the risk side may find the rewards outstanding." Well, since the book came out, owning any of the Internet stocks has only led to losing a lot of money.

Why then did a rate the book at 2 stars rather than 1? Well, it does have some cautions in it. "Don't put your life savings into Internet stocks . . . ." Amen! You are encouraged to buy quality companies, hold the stocks, keep your expenses low, use mutual funds, watrch your risk (based on your stomach acid levels and sleepless nights), diversify, and have fun. Well, you would have been out of Internet stocks before the book came out if you followed that advice literally.

Many Internet companies are going out of business as they run out of cash. To the book's credit, this risk is finally pointed out briefly on pages 183 and 184.

Naturally, if many stocks were going to fall 50-99%, this was a great time to sell the stocks short. This is first mentioned briefly as an opportunity on page 147. But brand new investors should not be selling short in volatile categories.

Here's my advice. Buy a lottery ticket instead. You have the same chance of making money, and because the unit cost is smaller, you will lose less money.

Stick to things you know where the odds are in your favor. Read Common Sense About Mutual Funds by John Bogle instead if you want a useful perspective on how new investors can make money.

The book features some very good content, while I recommend it, I have to say like many computer text books they can become out of date as quickly as overnight. The book is well orgranised into easy to read sections and contains many useful links, unfortunately many of those links are now deak links. Another dated part of the book is about promoting your site with search engines, these day search engines have cought on to the fact that they can make money by making people pay to have their site listed, so if you want to have your site listed on one search engine it can cost several hundred dollars, gone are the days of adding your site for free

This book is a collection of essays by the authors, plus selections from contributors such as Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams,Cathy Young,John Leo, and Camille Paglia. It is applicable as a text or supplement in introductory or small business courses, and courses in economics, business law, women's studies/law, and political science. It also is an ideal resource for small business programs. The book demonstrates how overly intrusive government can turn the American dream of owning a small business into a nightmare. Drawing on both their academic expertise and firsthand experiences as owners of a small business, the authors combine a groundbreaking intellectual analysis with Mainstreet true-life stories to illustrate the absurdities of big government.

Really enjoyed the book! Even though I knew that the government hates business and success, especially out here in the People's Republic of California, the book was still an eye-opener. This book should be required reading for every voter and politician. (If even half the voters and politicians read this book, America would be a much better, more prosperous place.) Definitely a job well done!

        I just hope a sequel isn't necessary!

Not Mom & Pop vs. the Dreambusters, it gives you the REAL WORLD look at things. This book gives you the street smarts needed to survive in this world. I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about owning their own small business. Thank you Ralph for all that you have taught me.
