Book Description
“Remarkably insightful . . . A groundbreaking revision that deserves to reframe the entire debate . . . It soars.”—The New York Times Book Review
In The Accidental Empire, Gershom Gorenberg examines the strange birth of the settler movement in the ten years following the Six-Day War and finds that it was as much the child of Labor Party socialism as of religious extremism. The giants of Israeli history—Dayan, Meir, Eshkol, Allon—all played major roles in this drama, as did more contemporary figures like Sharon, Rabin, and Peres. Gorenberg also shows how three American presidents turned a blind eye to what was happening in the territories, and reveals their strategic reasons for doing so.
Drawing on newly opened archives and extensive interviews, Gorenberg calls into question much of what we think we know about this issue that continues to haunt the Middle East.

Romantic view of Israeli history from Israel's leftwing.......2007-04-26
Israel came into being as a result of a civil war during the last days of the British Mandate over Palestine. As the civil war gathered momentum the British abandoned the mandate with the approval of most of the rest of the world. The Israeli left knows this war as the war of Independence and the Arab Palestinians whether now Israeli citizens or stateless Palestinians as the 'Nakba' or 'disaster'.
In Gorenberg's book it is the war of Independence with its effective partition of mandatory Palestine without most of the Jewish religious sites and most of the Arabs with the exception of the Arab areas of the Galilee.
What frightens Gorenberg the most about the Jewish settlements in Judea and Samaria is that they contain most of the sites of Jewish religious significance and that they now also contain centers of Jewish religious population. He fears their existence more than he fears the Palestinian Arabs. The reason is quite simple: one is a distant neighbor and the other is too much like his own mother-in-law.
So the remaining areas of the stateless British Mandate for Palestine which Israel conquered in 1967 are referred to as being occupied territory. This serves both the interests of the Israeli left who don't want the Jewish religious sites nor the re-emergence of a strong religious sentiment among the Jewish people. It also serves the interests of the Palestinian Arabs who want to return to the days of 1948 when partition of the land on better terms for them was still available.
The Palestinian Arab viewpoint is that the entire area should be Islamic and Arab despite its large Jewish population. This is not well discussed. The idea that UN resolution 242 is effectively a return to the Peel commisions partition plan or the 1947 UN plan for partition plan is also not discussed. It is presented only as a preservation of the status quo of the 1949 armistice lines now disguised as being Israel and the rest as being occupied territory. This mis-reading of history maximizes the area of the partition for Palestinian Arabs without taking on additional Jewish religious sites. It also helps prevent the re-emergence of strong religious sentiment among the Jewish people in Israel.
As an Israeli it is a fun book to read, but understand that you are reading propaganda from a very interested party. A book on the same events from the standpoint of a Palestinian Arab or a religious Palestinian Jew would tell you an entirely different story.
Full, in depth, information.......2007-02-12
The Accidental Empire is a wide ranging book, but a wonderfully focused and well researched account aftermath of the Six Days War, the capture of the Golan Heights, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. TAE appears to be a wider treatment of Gorenberg's far less successful (though very interesting) first book, The End of Days, about the growing power of religious Zionists. Instead of focusing on the Temple Mount, TAE provides an account of the religious settlement movement, primarily Gush Emunim, and their attempts to create illegal settlements in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. Perhaps the strongest point of the book is how muddled the thinking of the Labor leadership was about the new settlements. As aging revolutionaries, they were still wedded to the idea that settlements meant security; that creating facts on the land would lead to a more secure Israel. But they were equally drawn to the idea that land was a negotiating chip with surrounding Arab states. The pull between both impulses led to a sustained paralysis.
Any interested in Zionist history and issues must have this........2006-09-24
THE ACCIDENTAL EMPIRE: ISRAEL AND THE BIRTH OF THE SETTLEMENTS, 1967-77 offers up the untold story based on new original research, of the actions and issues which created the Israeli settlements in the occupied territories. It goes beyond detailing the well-known events of the Six Day War to probe the birth of the settler movement in Israel, the product of Labor Party socialism and religious extremism. Israel's major figures and how they interacted with U.S. administrative forces - distracted by Vietnam - are probed in chapters which tell of the first Israeli settler in occupied territory p to modern times. Any interested in Zionist history and issues must have this.

Adds much to a better understanding of the historical context of the current strife in the West Bank and Gaza.......2006-07-09
It is essential in reading this book, and perhaps more significantly in reading reviews of this book, to separate the views of religious expansionists from those of the secular government and of by far the highest portion of the population of Israel throughout its existence regarding the settlements. It is also important to compare the strong emotional, almost messianic, attachment to the land of Samaria and Judea felt and espoused by the settlers with the need of the government to "create facts" on the land that supposedly distinguished its own internal legal opinions, and those of most of the rest of the world, regarding the "legality" of the settlements. Whatever personal views you may have on these and other core issues raised by Gorenberg's thoroughly researched, well documented and extensively footnoted work, his dispassionate, well written report of the events is an invaluable reference work that helps define the significance of the settlements as contributing to Middle East unrest. Moreover, Gorenberg's fascinating report of the inner workings of the Eshkol, Meir and Rabin cabinets, and the arrogant disregard of official government policy by cabinet members who represented a small but powerful portion of the population, provide insight into the intrigues that seemingly drive many national decisions in Israel because of the need to form coalition governments that direct the policies of the country.
A well written, well researched, thorough history of an import period of Israeli history.......2006-05-17
Although I consider myself very knowledgeable about the Arab-Israeli conflict, this book nevertheless provided me with much new information. I think that it is common for people to believe that following the six day war the labor government desperately desired to trade the newly conquered territories for peace and that settlements did not start until the Likud government took over in the late '70's. This book sets the record straight. Although, the Israeli government's official position was that it was ready to trade land for peace, their actions spoke otherwise. Largely due to an emotional attachment to the "Whole Land of Israel" as well as for security concerns, the labor government was actually conflicted about giving up the territories. Slowly but surely the labor government encouraged or condoned settlements including near major Arab population centers (eg Hebron). This was despite the government's knowledge that such settlement contravened international law. Israel's grasp on the territories was already quite firm before the likud governments of the 1980's.
Gorenberg's book is very well researched as he relies upon archived documents as well as interviews of the political players at the time. A unique aspect of the book is how Gorenberg follows certain "unknown" individuals, such as a regular army soldier who fought in the six day war, and intersperses their emotions and ideas within the relatively more dry telling of the history.
This is a very important book for anyone who wants to understand the current conflict.

Robert X. Cringely manages to capture the contradictions and everyday insanity of computer industry empire building, while at the same time chipping away sardonically at the PR campaigns that have built up some very common businesspeople into the household gods of geekdom. Despite some chuckles at the expense of all things nerdy, white, and male in the computer industry, Cringely somehow manages to balance the humor with a genuine appreciation of both the technical and strategic accomplishments of these industry luminaries. Whether you're a hard-boiled Silicon Valley marketing exec fishing for an IPO or just a plain old reader with an interest in business history and anecdotal storytelling, there's something to enjoy here.
Book Description
Computer manufacturing is--after cars, energy production and illegal drugs--the largest industry in the world, and it's one of the last great success stories in American business. Accidental Empires is the trenchant, vastly readable history of that industry, focusing as much on the astoundingly odd personalities at its core--Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mitch Kapor, etc. and the hacker culture they spawned as it does on the remarkable technology they created. Cringely reveals the manias and foibles of these men (they are always men) with deadpan hilarity and cogently demonstrates how their neuroses have shaped the computer business. But Cringely gives us much more than high-tech voyeurism and insider gossip. From the birth of the transistor to the mid-life crisis of the computer industry, he spins a sweeping, uniquely American saga of creativity and ego that is at once uproarious, shocking and inspiring.
Customer Reviews:
"Accidental Empires" is not exactly an appropriate title.......2007-07-12
Published in 1992, this book is a good retrospective on the rise of the microcomputer and the fortunes it helped generate. However, Cringely almost totally fails when he attempts to look into the future. Cringely writes a regular industry gossip column for "InfoWorld" and so is well connected with the inner workings of the IT industry. As you will be able to see from Cringely's writings, the choice of the title is only marginally correct.
It is true that Bill Gates, Steven Jobs and the others who gleaned enormous fortunes from the rise of the personal computer were in the right place at the right time. To this extent, the use of the term accidental is appropriate. However, they were also smart enough to recognize opportunities that others did not, so in that area there was nothing accidental about their success.
If you read this book with that in mind, then there are many benefits to reading it. However, without that perspective, you may reach the end with a biased and incorrect opinion of how these incredible fortunes were made.
A fun gossip column that captures the times.......2007-02-26
Robert Cringely's book captures the ethos of early and mid-90s Silicon Valley - when nerds were starting to change the world, but the masses didn't get it yet. He captures the gossip, makes bold predictions (Bill Gates won't get married while his Mom is still alive - doh!) and accurately relates the ethos of the era. At the time it was almost a call to arms. Now it still suffices for historical context.
Amusing and accurate! Oh for a new edition!!.......2007-01-10
I found this book a real delight.
You are given many amusing insights and he's often got things VERY accurate indeed. Worth reading.
If only it didn't stop back then and we could now get to Volume II :-)
Cringely was there and part of the epic tale of Silicon Valley.......2006-08-01
He gets it -- from his first chapter when he says that constant change is the only norm in the PC business and the floppy disk days to Fry's Electronics and Bill Gates mom Mary-- some great insider information. Cringley is a former Stanford professor and foreign correspondent. Great to have on your shelf and look back to what was what back then. In his final chapters he says "surfing is the perfect metaphor for high technology business-- little did he know in 1993 how right he was and would be! Of course on the last page, he says no more phones or TV sets by the middle of this next decade -- like 2005 :))No more computers-- hmm what am I keyboarding on. He talks about the rise of multiple devices and of course we have those too...funny how most of this stuff doesn't replace the earlier stuff-- just more boxes and goodies to cart around or clutter the desk. But oh that productivity.
Interesting.......2006-04-21
This is an interesting book. If you ever wanted to know about the companies that have ruled the computer world, just read this book, you'll learn about them in a pretty funny way. If you're an entrepreneur, you'll learn a lot from this book.

Whatever.......2007-07-21
This review may be by a Professor Emeritus in International Relations, but it sure didn't offer me much help!
The book that Rubner is reviewing discusses the origin of the Israeli towns in the West Bank after the 1967 war. Jordan had annexed the West Bank in 1948, an annexation recognized only by itself, Great Britain, and Pakistan. And Jordan had expelled the Jews from the West Bank. In 1967, Israel liberated the place, and it seems unsurprising that some Jews decided to return to the West Bank. One question that might be interesting would be whether Israel would have been guilty of a crime had it prohibited such a return. But I see no mention of this. Instead, the review reads as if permitting Jews to live in Judea and Samaria (as well as the Old City of Jerusalem) might be a crime!
Rubner says that Israel's victory in the 1967 war made it possible for some people to make "grandiose dreams" into reality.
Grandiose dreams!
I'll have to remember that one! Just the very idea of letting Israelis live throughout the West Bank, making little Israel a whopping 11,000 square miles (but still 500 times smaller than the Arab lands) is "grandiose!"
If all human beings had dreams which were as grandiose as that, there would never be any fights over land!
Rubner says that in September, 1967, Israel was already aware that "the construction of settlements in the territories violated international law." Well, maybe Gorenberg and Rubner agree that they violated international law. I do not. Now, I could be wrong. But if I am wrong about this, then that would not make Israel wrong to permit Jews to live in the West Bank. Instead, it would make international law wrong to prohibit it.
Rubner says that it took some Shimon Peres until the 1990s to "realize" that the increasing presence of Jews in the West Bank was "a major, if not the major, obstacle" to peace between the Arabs and Israelis. Well, I still do not "realize" it. Maybe I'm just too stupid to see that the way to achieve peace is to appease all demands made by thugs.
Rubner finds fault with Gorenberg for implying that Israel's "colonization" was "primarily on public lands in relatively uninhabited areas." I suspect that if Gorenberg did imply this, that Gorenberg is likely to be right about it. Rubner does not feel the same way. Instead, he quotes a report which states that "39 percent of the land on which Jewish settlements had been built" was privately owned by Arabs. I think that this report is almost surely very far from the truth, and I think that Rubner shows enormous bias to appear to accept it without question.

Stupid.......2007-07-29
This review of "The Accidental Empire" says everything I expected it to say.
It starts by discussing the first few Jewish communities in the disputed West Bank after their liberation by Israel in the Six Day war. Oh, excuse me, did I say disputed? In this review, one might think that they are anything but that, and are instead Holy Arab Land. And that the entire Pantheon has decreed that such land must be Judenrein.
Yes, as Rebecca Sinderbrand says, there are at least 261,000 Jews "still living" in lands "conquered" by Israel during the Six Day War. Sinderbrand does explain that the settlements house second and "even" third generations of the "early post-war pioneers."
Still living? Um, is that a problem, and if so, just what is she trying to recommend as a solution?
Perhaps Sinderbrand could explain to us why it is so important to set a precedent by evicting second and third generations of people from their homes, in their homeland. Perhaps instead of implying that it might be illegal to let Jews live in Judea or Samaria, she could discuss why it might have been illegal for Israel to prevent Jews from living there. Perhaps she could have admitted that it would prejudge negotiations on whose land it is if one stipulated that one of the parties to the dispute were not allowed to set foot on it!
Perhaps Sinderbrand could explain to us just how much land Israel would have if nobody discriminated against people according to their religion or skin color. After all, there are over 6 million people in Israel, including over 5 million Jews. Israel does have some nice beach property, but it has almost no oil, and few resources. It is over half desert. It's awfully land-poor, and it should be obvious to everyone that if a group of a few million people chosen at random tried to buy its share of land, they'd get several times the territory that Israel has. Perhaps Sinderbrand could explain to us just why it is such a terrific idea to swipe land from the land-poor and ethnically cleanse it of its Jews.
Sinderbrand complains that "there was no one to save Israel from itself." She's way out of line here. The problem is that there was no one to save Israel from a bunch of thugs who were determined to cheat it, rob it, and demonize it, with a goal of destroying it. And that is a problem for everyone, as the precedent it sets for cheating, robbing, demonizing, and destroying other nations is scary.
If you think that the reason some thugs are attacking Israel is that it has allowed Jews to settle in the West Bank, I have a bunch of beachfront property on the other side of the Galaxy that you might be interested in purchasing from me at a, um, bargain price.

Customer Reviews:
This book has transformed my professional life from an amateur to a professional.......2007-08-31
Greg McCann's book has transformed my professional life from an amateur to a professional. Without this book and all of its insight about social intelligence, I would not have progressed so much in all of the walks of my life. Not only has this book taught me how to fully take responsibility for my work, as an aspiring entrepreneur When Your Parents Sign the Paychecks has raised my standard for my goals and the way I plan to accomplish them.
One common misconception about this book might be "I don't have a family business; therefore this book may not be for me." Well after reading this book, I can tell you that that statement is false. I am not from a family business, although I have definitely recommended this text to those families in all stages of business and transition. This book will give you a new outlook on a way you can transform your business as well as your life. If you follow all the exercises and look into topics discussed in the book, such as the life plan and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, your professional life will improve greatly. The life plan that Dr. Greg McCann has you do in a latter chapter of the book is the best exercise I have ever done in my life.
As a young man still trying to figure things out, I have found this book to be a guideline for me. This guideline has really helped me bring my parents back into my life, not only by me being able to be myself but also in discussing my plan with them. The book also showed me ways and habits of communication within my close network of friends and family which has helped me in countless situations. The amount of self-assurance that I received after reading this was priceless and really put things into prospective for me.
Lastly I would like to comment on the way the book is written. Not only was it a compelling read, it challenged me to look back at myself and see the big picture. While I was reading it, I really felt like I had a life coach talking to me. The book's layout is well structured too; with key definitions and charts laid out to help you truly understand the material. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to get serious about their life - for parents and students of all ages.
A valuable reference for new family business employees.......2007-08-29
I'm approaching my one-year anniversary working for a medium-sized, but growing, family business. The majority of my career - nearly 20 years, however, has been spent moving up the corporate ladder. Greg's book was an invaluable guide to exploiting the opportunities, and avoiding the pitfalls, of such a business. Thanks to reading it, I hit the ground running, with eyes wide open!
A must read for anyone considering working in their family business.......2007-08-20
As a professional with one of the world's top firms serving the next generation of families who own businesses and families of wealth,I found this book to be the best resource I have found to assist young people in their career quest. The author articulates the issues I hear about from my clients every day in his description of the "eight challenges". These challenges face anyone considering working with their family business. This structure provides a systematic, step-by-step process that has never before been available. The best part is that it goes beyond just talking about it in terms of a career decision and goes deeper helping individuals assess their passions and thinking in terms of what is best for them, their family and the business.
It is about self development and awareness for individuals and includes tools that can help a family get along better and have a more successful business. At its core it helps young people take ownership for their lives, a core issue at this life stage, especially when your family owns a business and/or has great wealth.
The book is written in a voice that makes it accessible for an audience of teenagers but in my opinion it is extremely useful for all ages including parents and advisors working with family owned businesses. It even comes with a Parents Guide to coach the senior generation how to best be a productive part of their child's use of this book.
In my experience I have never read a book that has given me so much insight into how to advise members of the next generation and I would recommend this book to anyone considering working with their family, parents who own a family business and advisors who work with families in business.
Fantastic and fun read!
A unique and seminal work .......2007-07-09
Most family businesses don't survive the next generation of family members. "When Your Parents Sign The Paychecks: Finding Career Success Inside Or Outside The Family Business" by Greg McCann (Founder of the Family Business Center, Stetson University and the family business consulting firm of McCann & Associates ) offers a comprehensive and superbly organized guide to having a career within or without the family business. Professor McCann teaches the reader how to create and evaluate an education and career plan where decisions are made for the right reason instead of by default; develop 'marketability' for themselves instead of merely feeling entitled to a position through nepotism; build a career portfolio, obtain work experience outside their family business, and recruit objective mentors for themselves. Of special note is what Professor McCann has to say about preserving relationships while dealing with family expectations with respect to entering the family business; the importance of attitude and communication styles; and avoiding the downside of undeserved pay and benefits arising from participation in a family business. Using examples of three young people with family businesses, "When Your Parents Sign The Paychecks" deals with 'the amateur', 'the semipro', and 'the professional'. If you have a family business that you'd like to see your children take on, of if you are the child of a parent with a family business expecting you to take over, you need to give Professor McCann's "When Your Parents Sign The Paychecks" a close and careful reading. This is a unique and seminal work that should be a part of every college and community library's Jobs & Careers reference collection.

It's OK.......2006-03-31
Review from my wife:
The only reason I give it 3 stars and not 2 is that it has the basic "Behinds the Scenes" information in it that most Disney buffs know already - but a newbie would not know. So for a new person, it would be interesting for them.
Yes, there are factual errors in it and some "smugness" in certain areas. Take it with a grain of salt - all of the UnOfficial Books are like this.
It was fun to read in retrospect. It talks about future plans, etc. So that was interesting.
I read it while on the treadmill. It kept me entertained for a few 45 minutes for a few days.
Rushed and incomplete.......2005-07-22
Don't get this book if you're a Disney nut, because you're going to get a rehash of 99% of what you already know. You're not going to find much in the way of insider secrets or funny antecdotes about Disney or the theme parks. Also, the book has a number of glaring factual errors, once you come across one of them, your faith in the rest of the material isn't going to last long. Skip this one.
Little new, with condescension to boot.......2003-09-25
I came to the book looking for interesting inside tidbits. What I found was a book not well-researched, with a number of outright factual errors, such as the old urban legend that the top of the castle can be removed in the event of a hurricane.
All this is wrapped up in a post-modern smugness that makes the reading experience, while fast-moving, downright unpleasant at times.
AUTHOR DOES NOT MAKE THE CUT.......2003-07-15
This book COULD have been so much better. This book SHOULD have been a lot better. I am a big Disney World fan, and was looking forward to reading this book when I first saw it, but I was very disappointed in it. The author in this book, Eve Zibart, is not very good. She shares her opinions way too much, which don't even make sense, and she is trying to write this book like she is turning it into her english teacher. The phrases and words she uses are too complicated at times, and again, do not make any sense. You get the feeling she is trying to impress someone with that. Those kind of things are not suited for this type of book. Also, she does not cover nearly as much as she should in a book like this. This book is a great concept, and if done right, would have been very interesting. I was expecting to learn some behind-the-scenes things about Disney World, but throughout the whole book I probably learned one thing. If someone else writes a book with this same concept, I would love to read it, but I do not recommend reading this one.
A Fun and Interesting Read.......2003-03-04
This little book is packed with lots of fun and interesting history and trivia about Disney. It covers everything from parks to rides to hidden Mickeys to the main players such as Walt Disney and Michael Eisner. I've read many books about the parks, Walt, Eisner, etc., and I honestly expected this to be a condensed re-hash of all that. I am pleasantly surprised to find that's not the case. I am also surprised that some of the other reviewers mentioned negativity on the part of the author. I didn't find it negative at all -- and as a Disney enthusiast, I surely would have picked up on that! In contrast, I found it fresh and just an incredibly FUN book. And the price can't be beat!

Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT BOOK. It delivers what it promised........2007-08-27
EXCELLENT BOOK. It delivers what it promised.
EXCELLENT BOOK. If you ever wanted to know EVERYTHING about investing, financial planning, taxes, and making money this is required reading.
I haven't counted every word, but even the glossary must have defined at lease a thousand financial terms. It is filled with hundreds of pages of sound financial advice. Obviously, this book has been THOUOGHLY researched.
My friends are buying copies for their adult children. I asked them why, and they said that this book is filled with the things EVERY young person need to know and they, as the parent, may have failed to communicate. Perhaps, because they, the parents took for granted that their children would absorb the information just by being their children.
And, these are my CPA's, those with MBA's, leader of major corporations, and my stockbrokers. I do not understand why, but my wealthier and better-educated friends understand the value of this book more than the less educated and less wealthy. That is very unfortunate. But isn't that usually the case? Often, those that need the information the most appreciate it the less.
ANYONE that sincerely wants to buy a thoroughly researched financial reference book filled with hundreds of pages of detailed factual financial information will not be disappointed. Buy it today.
Financial Planning For The Not-Yet Millionaire,Pocket Change And A Prayer: That's ALL you need To get started
It's not BAD, but ..........2007-08-19
The Millionaire Mailman does contain a plethora of financial information. "My Inside Story On How I Became Rich..." however, is nonexistent.Did he write his own review? There are hundreds of pages of facts, but no tales of delivering mail in the sweltering heat of Texas while being offered lemonade by "the richest families in Texas" in their air conditioned homes(or anything like that). I was expecting a story, but I got a book full of facts you can literally find anywhere. I suppose it's nice to have all that copious information in one place if you need it, but there is nothing amusing or intersting or even any advice. "Inside Story" was very misleading to me.
The Definitive Financial Book .......2007-07-31
It is breathtaking in scope. Clearly, it has been rigorously researched and documented. The hundreds of pages of timely business and personal finance advice are relevant in everyway. It explains in minute details how to prosper in any situation. Buy it today.
