A fine female central figure.......2006-08-20
This is certainly one of Nora Roberts' better novels. As always, she creates a realistic setting, herein the delightful village of Ardmore, County of Waterford Ireland. In fact, Ms. Roberts is about the best writer working today in creating a getaway setting for her plots. For this alone, the book is worth the time to read.
As an aside, the town Ms. Roberts describes actually exists, pretty much as we see it in this trilogy. There is a ruined church dedicated to Ireland's first Christian, St. Declan, and there is a round tower on the hill overlooking Ardmore and the sea on the south coast of Ireland. The population of Ardmore is about 300 people. However, there is no known pub there named Gallaghers. Too bad.
What makes this book stand above the first and third books of the Irish trilogy is the character of Brenna O'Toole, a young woman who works beside her handyman father and dresses like him. Readers have seen far too many frilly, bosomy heroines and young Lochinvar heroes. It's a pleasant departure to find a heroine full of contradictions and with earthy overtones.
The plot is more than somewhat predictable, alas. Anyone who has read one or two of this writer's novels knows exactly what is going to occur. Man and woman are introduced to the reader. They clash, even as they are attracted to one another physically. There will be a sex scene about half way through the book, in this case a far more specific scene than usual. Then there will be at least one or more similar scenes before the inevitable happy ending. The ending here is a bit of a downer, in that Brenna is, to my thinking, humiliated in a very painful way for no good reason. It leaves a rather bitter taste for the reader who has read it all.
But let us not quibble too much. Nora Roberts is a very good writer. Her settings, her characters, her dialogue--all are excellent. One can only wish that she might surprise the reader by not using the same plot formula again and again.
An Awesome Book!.......2006-07-02
This is truly one of Nora Roberts' better efforts. I own around 70 of her books, and Tears of the moon is definately in my top 10 favorites. I found it to be engaging, relaxing, amusing, heart felt and endearing. The charactors are unique, diverse and very believable. Even the Fairie prince and the ghost, Lady Gwen, were believable. I enjoyed the fact that she didn't stereo type her charactors. The entire series was incredible, I would recomend this to any Nora Roberts fan, or to anyone new to Romance novels.

There is nothing this series does not hit on!! It really has everything needed to make the entire series a real page turner and the characters could be anyone of us, all you have to do is believe love can conquer all thru time and space, these books are a wonderfully enjoyable treasure!!

This continues to be one of my favorite trilogies! It combines Irish Myths with a real working family.
Each story stands on it's own but at the same time the three together flow very well.
Note to other reviewer George. Call information and get the 1800 number and them talk to a real person. I have had to return a DVD player and they have the best service of anyone I have ever dealt with.

I received this item and was joyfully listening to it when I came to tape two of Heart of the Sea- it is all jumbled up- twisted and totally un fixable- I've tried to contact Amazon about this but all I get is the runaround on their AWFUL "return system" on their website. This is a warning to any others who order from Amazon- check your order CAREFULLY. Now I'm stuck with this defective tape and Amazon WON'T LET ME CONTACT THEM!!!!!!!!!!! I haven't given up yet. There's got to be a way to return defective merchandise without being sent to one dead end after another. Sincerely wmclement@yahoo.com

This author is a born storyteller. She weaves a spellbinding story of a young woman, Lily Burton who, upon the death of her mother, embarks upon a search for her roots. The only link with her past is a beautiful mother-of-pearl pendant with distinctive markings. Her voyage of discovery takes her to western Australia and a town called Broome. It is there that she finds her great-grandmother Olivia's diary and discovers the rich, though startling, truth about her family and its heritage.
This is a vastly entertaining book that transports the reader to the hardscrabble world of late nineteenth century western Australia, which finds young, pregnant Olivia Hennessey and her husband, Conrad, newly arrived from England, embarking upon a journey and adventure of a lifetime. There, they would meet Captain John Tyndall, a handsome and dashing adventurer with whom they would forge a thriving business alliance that would later transform itself into something else for both Olivia and the Captain. I just came across this book at a garage sale last week. I liked the title and the art work. (Yeah,I'm guilty of judging a book by it's cover art) I've only begun reading it, but if a prologue and the first chapter can get me intrigued to read on, then I'm banking on it being a great way to spend my 50 cents. I'm a page away from chapter 2. So far, so good, and I'm sure it'll be worth 5 stars. Di's books will no doubt be favorites for me to look for, and I'm eager to catch up on the ones I've missed.

I was so enthralled with Tears of the Moon that the day I finished reading it I went on a search for more books by Di Morrissey. She is a phenomenal storyteller! It is rare to read a book and not figure out where the author is headed, but Lily's story was wrought with twists, turns, and unexpected connection throughout her life's story. I loved it so much I convinced my 17 year old daughter to read it for her next school review...she did and loved it as much as I did.

I came across this book by accident and couldn't believe what a superb story it was. Like others who have read it, I didn't want it to end. It was enchanting and so unpredictable, which is great. Di Morrissey is an excellent writer. I have looked for her other books but were told they're not available in th U.S. I can't wait until they are.

I was enthralled by this book, it is excellently written and gives the reader a true feeling of what it is like to have "Gold Fever". I have recently finished the book but I am reading it again because it is that good! It is also extremely educational, I knew nothing about the Incas until I read Sweat of the Sun, Tears of the Moon. I am now longing to take a trip to the Llanganatis mountains, not in search of treasure, more on a pilgrimage than anything else.
A Treasury of Characters.......2001-01-27
This was a great story of the possibility that vast wealth in gold and silver are still hidden in the Andes. The various doccuments and treasure hunters that the author unearthed and befriended made for a ripping yarn. His own expedition to the trecherous landscape where the treasure is supposedly hidden was a real adventure. He cared about the people he wrote about and the reader will too. Loved this book!
This is thrilling and intelligent, great book........1998-09-25
I first read Sweat of the Sun, Tears of the Moon in the original Atheneum hardcover. What a fine book! It's not your usual treasure-hunt adventure, but a sensitive portrayal of South American culture and dreams. Well, it's also a treasure hunt, and you can't believe Lourie lived through it all to tell the tale. I'm so happy to see it in paperback A really fine book by a fine author. His young-adult books are extraordinary as well. But this one's a must for any reader interested in the Andes, in treasure hunting, in the human soul in darkest peril. Five stars all the way. This is one of those books you keep thinking about for years.

Wow, these books she write take you on a trip to Ireland. I love her writing, and how she takes the time to truly write in a Irish brogue. By the end of these books, she had me believing in Fairies. I loved this set, and would recommend it very highly!!

In his excellent review on Amazon Joseph D. Widiger lists three incontrovertible principles of Malthus:
"That population cannot increase without the means of subsistence, is a proposition so evident, that it needs no illustration."( But of course today we have population declining in many areas of the world where food is superabundant. In otherwise Malthus did not foresee the kind of demographic transition Mankind is going through, precisely in those societies which have freed themselves completely from living at subsistence level.

The second principle is as follows:
"That population does invariably increase, where there are the means of subsistence, the history of every people that have ever existed will abundantly prove.( Again this is no longer the case. We are according to demographers such as Ben Wattenberg and Kenneth Longman living in a ' birth dearth' era at least in the most advanced societies of Europe.)
The third principle is:
"And, that the superior power of population cannot be checked, without producing misery or vice, the ample portion of these too bitter ingredients in the cup of human life, and the continuance of the physical causes that seem to have produced them, bear too convincing a testimony."
In opposite ,the global transformations involving movements of masses of people from the countryside to the city,the increase in the level of education of women, the invention of safe means of contraception have all taken the ' necessity' out of Malthus 'law'.
We live in a different situation than the one he envisaged. And even if global malnutrition does persist, it does not persist because of problems of scarcity but rather of distribution.
All of this of course, does not diminish Malthus genius, or the rightful place he has in the history of social science. For he was the first to truly give an understanding the tremendous importance that population size has on the character and quality of societies.
An Essay on the Principle of Population by Malthus.......2003-10-29
The Malthusian theory on population was written in 1798.
Malthus believed that the population increased faster than the supply of food available to feed people. He argued that increments in food production due to innovation would stimulate
higher increases in the population growth. Ultimately,
the population would stabilize by famine, death and disease.
Some of these basic principles are being experienced today.
Millions have died from the AIDS disease. In addition, third
world countries are plaqued by famine despite the technological
innovations in food production and distribution. The writings
of Malthus encouraged the first studies in demography.
His readings on population are very critical to an understanding
of our modern day problems with food production, distribution
and innovative techniques to manage a series of continuing
crises in the third world countries.

When I filled out and mailed my census questionnaire in 2000, I reflected upon Malthus's sobering classic, An Essay on the Principle of Population. When I was in elementary school in the 1960's, I remember reading optimistic reports in my Weekly Reader that new high-yielding crops would make it possible to meet the food requirements of the world. If those utopians were familiar with Malthus's essay, their visions for the future welfare of humanity might have been less optimistic. However, if there was over-optimism then, it has largely vanished now.
Who has not viewed educational television programs discussing the severe stresses on the global environment due to our excessive consumption of both renewable and nonrenewable resources? Environmentalists highlight the dire energy and environmental problems facing us in the future. The poorer countries would also like to enjoy the benefits of industrialization that will, of course, further tax our resources and stress our environment. Even if we assume the environmentalists exaggerate our circumstances, even the scientifically illiterate comprehend that the capacity of the earth to support life is finite. In the face of such problems, Malthus's three "incontrovertible truths" are as relevant today as the day he penned them:
"That population cannot increase without the means of subsistence, is a proposition so evident, that it needs no illustration.
"That population does invariably increase, where there are the means of subsistence, the history of every people that have ever existed will abundantly prove.
"And, that the superior power of population cannot be checked, without producing misery or vice, the ample portion of these too bitter ingredients in the cup of human life, and the continuance of the physical causes that seem to have produced them, bear too convincing a testimony."
Both liberals and conservatives have hated Malthus's essay. It dumps cold water on humanitarian hopes and can be used in support of abortion rights and government restrictions on family size. To our peril, we would like to live, aided by technology, in denial of Malthus's postulate, "Population, when unchecked, increases in a geometrical ratio. Subsistence increases only in an arithmetical ratio." To our endangerment, we would prefer to luxuriate in ignorance of his observation that his postulate "implies a strong and constantly operating check on population fromn the difficulty of subsistence." Says Malthus, "This difficulty must fall some where; and must necessarily be severely felt by a large portion of mankind." Where will this "difficulty of subsistence" put a check on our currently growing world population?
When I was born in 1957, the world population was just under 2.9 billion. It is now over 6 billion. The U.S. Bureau of the Census estimates that the world population will reach 9.3 billion in 2050. With the technological enhancement of our ability to augment our means of subsistence, have we deceived ourselves into believing that we can indefinitely defy the principles of population that Malthus contended were "incontrovertible truths"? Are we robbing from our future by building up a high-interest debt to nature that will lead us to bankruptcy?
We are in need of the fortitude and love of truth that enabled Malthus to say of himself the following:
"[H]e has not acquired that command over his understanding which would enable him to believe what he wishes, without evidence, or to refuse his assent to what might be unpleasing, when accompanied with evidence."
Indeed, the evidence is clear to anyone not addicted to postmodern and new age paradigms of unreason. If we do not put a check on our population, then inevitably, as Malthus puts it, "necessity" will check it via "misery and vice." Thus, Malthus's essay is not just and old classic; it is an old classic containing a valid warning for people of our world today.
A book for those interested in sociology or economy........2000-07-07
This book by Malthus is essential for the evolution of the economy thought. Its principles were taken by others economist and sociologist to make their own theories, David Ricardo for example, one of the most important authors of the clasic school. Malthus recomendations had influenced remarkable politicians, who change importants laws in England based on Malthus ideas. A must for everyone interested in the early economy books.

There is a better edition available..........2007-10-08
This is the second (1803) edition of Malthus' Essay, which is considerably expanded from the first (1798) edition, to the point of being a completely new book. It is truly excellent - well worth your time, even if you have already read the first edition. There is a better edition available than this one though (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought). For some incomprehensible reason, the editors ommited chapters 3 through 12 of Book 1, and ALL of Book 2 from this edition. To read the entire Essay, getAn Essay on the Principle of Population - Vol. 1 and An Essay on the Principle of Population - Vol. 2 ... or, get An Essay on the Principle of Population - Vol. 1 for books one and two, and this edition Malthus: An Essay on the Principle of Population (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought) for books 3 and 4. There don't seem to be any one volume editions of the second edition.

That Thomas Robert Malthus was a cleric might startle some readers, who could look on his pessimism as something that is more typical of a man of hard, God-less science. Malthus was clearly, once one examines deep within the heart of his treatise on overpopulation, a theist, and a hard-hearted "God Disposes" sort of one at that. Underneath everything, we can sense Malthus' view being, "ultimately what does this brief, cluttered, hopeless world matter next to eternal life in Heaven?" Malthus' statements about the human race breeding past its ability to feed itself, have merit, but he failed to take into account the capacity of science to be humanity's deliverer. Revolutions in agriculture, medicine, social health, as well as many other fields, not excluding simple advances in birth control, have to an extent nullified the ABSOLUTE nature of Thomas Malthus' ideas, and instead, alas, made them true primarily in the 21st century for the Third World alone. Malthus was a man both in and ahead of his time--in it because he had but to open his eyes and see starvation and orphaned children, poverty and overcrowding in the slums, and ahead of his time in that he looked forward and forecast a dire warning to the world of a time when the horrors of this state might over-sweep civilization and strangle it to death with numbers alone. Malthus was a cruel man on one hand, advocating the selective starvation of a segment of society. He totally opposed any form of welfare, charity or aid to those who could not contribute to their own upkeep. Those types, he argued, decayed human society and lead it closer to the nightmare state he detailed in his work. He cited wars, plagues, famines, as servants of humanity, in that they thinned the ranks and tried to keep us from reproducing ourselves into extinction. Malthus' fearful prognostications might yet see its consummation one day and some may say that in various parts of the world we are already seeing it, but I take the stance that if our species has one great gift, it is its intellect, and that intellect might-if we are motivated by conditions made intolerable--yet serve to deliver us from even our self-created scenarios of mad destruction.
Bigger than life.......2003-11-07
The reverend Thomas Robert Malthus is one of these figures that influences, in his case for good, generations to come. The concepts he developed, which is not the same to say that he discovered the fundamentals of these concepts, are of such working capability, that they can be used even today on a daily basis, some 200 + years after the first publication of his seminal and most important book, certainly one of the most important texts of all times. His name turned itself into an important adjective, malthusian, sometimes associated to a lot of misconceptions and misuse, mainly due to undue interpretations of things Malthus did not said, or did write with a different manifest meaning. Troughout his lifetime, Malthus, already a recognised and famous man, had to revise a lot of editions of his works in order to precise what he meant to say.
Dipping down into the original malthusian fountain is, in this way, a pretty much refreshing and inspiring experience, shunning aside the many bad interpretations attached to his original thinking by second hand reading. As a plus, the book presents at the end two extremely beatifully written chapters on the philosophical reasons behind Good and Evil, a necessary explanation in a revolutionary theory that could be interpreted as intrinsically evilsome. To add content and lustre to all Malthus wrote, one has to remind that the greatest economist of the XX century, John Maynard Keynes, felt himself philosophically and theoretically affiliated with Malthus in a very great scale, to the point of saying that, if Malthus had been better understood, the world would not had to suffer the weaknesses of David Ricardo's theories.
The most important essay........2000-07-12
This small and often overlooked essay by Thomas Malthus is probably one of the most important essays ever written.
Way back in 1798 Malthus wrote this essay to expose how human population is still being kept in check by mother nature. Famine, plague and war pop up whenever a population gets too high.
The essay has been overlooked mostly because of the stance Malthus takes in this book towards the poor. He suggests that when you give money to people who don't work, you help them have children. This increases the population without increasing production of food. Also, by increasing the standard of living of these people, you then qualify more people to receive without working, exacerbating the situation. Malthus clearly supports workhouses to welfare in this essay.
This essay had influenced two notable people. First is Charles Dickens. In 'A Christmas Carol' you read how Scrooge said, "that if the poor would not go into workhouses, they might as well die and decrease the surplus population". This was aimed straight at Malthus. The second person he influenced with this essay is Darwin. While reading Malthus, Darwin realized that population pressure was that "natural selector" that made evolution possible.

His father read it and was so impressed that he urged his son to have it published. And so, in 1798, Thomas Malthus' An Essay on Population appeared. Though it was attacked at the time and ridiculed for many years afterward, it has remained one of the most influential works in the English language on the general checks and balances of the world's population and its necessary control. The Second Edition .......2007-10-08
This is the second (1803) edition of Malthus' Essay on the Principle of Population, not the first (1798) edition. If you have already read the first edition, which is more commonly available, I would highly recommend getting the second edition, and reading it too, as the two editions are complementary works rather than duplicates of each other. Mathus really should have given the second edition an entirely new title, as it is in reality an entirely new work, although it is on the same subject. Either way, it is well worth your time and attention.
