Customer Reviews:
The Best Maps in the World!!!.......2007-10-05
I use these maps on every trip I go on! They are so accurate and easy to use. The map is durable for every type of weather and small enough to stick in a small bag. There is a streetwise map for every major city we have gone to and we love them! It's a great "memory keeper" as well.
Lame nyc map.......2007-09-12
don't waste your money. just because its laminated doesn't make it a good map. Not all streets are on it and sections of manhattan are missing. I wouldn't count on this map to help you out if you don't know the area and have things memorized before you get here. WE got lost on more than one occasion trying to use this thing.
Get the NFT black book of nyc instead. It has all you need and is small enough to fit into your purse or pocket.
Adequate Map - light weight........2007-08-14
I rate this as number three of the four references I purchased to help me navigate NYC. It's sturdy, compact, light weight and packs in all the information you might need to navigate Manhattan and hit the tourist spots.
This is the map to buy if you want to travel light in Manhattan.
Great product!.......2007-04-02
I love my Streetwise map. Sometimes it's a little hard to read for these middle aged eyes though. All in all, I couldn't do without it on my trips to Manhattan.
Great!!! ...subway connections would have been helpful though!.......2007-02-05
This is great-a laminated trifold that weathered through daily use during my months in NYC. I don't know what I would have done without it! However, while it shows subway STOPS, it doesn't show how they CONNECT. I bought a credit card sized subway connection map at a newspaper stand to supplement. The combination of the two was perfect! Also note that it is about half the size of an 11/13 peice of paper.

Manhattan map.......2007-09-24
The map was very accurate, but very small. Unless you were in bright sunlight, you needed a magnifying glass to see the details.
Same great map, smaller size.......2007-06-12
This map is perfect. It has street names, interest points, subway stops, and a good layout. It is laminated, so it lasts. This new smaller size is a better fit in my pocket -- the only thing I've always wanted from the full-size maps.

Customer Reviews:
This is a fantastic map!.......2006-08-25
I have just returned from our New York trip. Let me tell you that I was the "logistician" for our little group thanks to both Frommer's and this incredible Streetwise MidTown Manhattan Map!
The map is accurate, easy to read, very portable. I found the information it contained about the location of various Theatres particularly helpful.
I always purchase a map such as this prior to travel, and would not go to a city without a map like this! The Transit Map of New York was also very helpful and a wonderful companion purchase. Oh and do not forget the Downtown Manhattan Map!
Love maps.............2006-08-24
I own Streetwise maps for pretty much every city I've visited in the US and abroad. They're easy to read, and are pretty much indestructible. This is my second Manhattan map but only because I wanted more current hotel info. My old one looks as good as the one I just received. I've tried lots of street maps....these are the best !
Excellent for first-time visitors!.......2003-07-31
We used this map to get around Manhattan during our first-ever trip there in July, 2003. It's small enough to be convenient, big enough to show the important stuff, and, best of all, laminated so it takes the wear and tear of repeated use! I will definitely hold on to this map and take it with me the next time I visit NYC!

Customer Reviews:
Great for both the 'green' tourist and the seasoned NYer.......2004-04-06
If you think you'll ever find yourself in Manhattan, do us all a favor and buy this map. You don't want to look like a tourist fighting with that huge copy of the NYC subway map that they hand out for free. I'm convinced that the MTA has some sort of deal with the muggers to hand those unnecessarily large maps to mark the tourists.
This is by far the most comprehensive Manhattan map I've seen packed into an easy-to-carry, laminated package. It has all the essentials that would be valuable to the casual visitor or the local yokel who would never admit they don't know where Essex crosses Rivington.
Customer Reviews:
Satisfactory, but...........2007-09-27
We expected a more detailed version of the transit [subway and bus] maps included in Streetwise Manhattan. It is an exact duplicate. It is alright to have it separate, I suppose, but I think it was misleading and dishonest for Amazon to list them as a bargain to purchase together without saying it was an exact duplicate!!!

Book Description
This broad and lucid study of the merits of different economic systems combines economic criteria of success with a philosophically sophisticated analysis of ethical foundations and moral justification. Despite the fall of socialism, the deep feelings of discontent with capitalism that gave rise to socialism remain as strong as ever. This discontent stems from what are perceived to be serious, moral deficiencies inherent in current capitalism, such as vast inequalities in wealth and opportunities. Thus the search for an alternative system that avoids these inequalities continues. In this book, Professor Haslett investigates whether the deficiencies of capitalism can be overcome without abandoning capitalism or its traditional strengths. He begins by setting out and defending a moral perspective appropriate for evaluating economic systems, and goes on to examine and reject two alternative systems: libertarian capitalism and centrally planned socialism. He concludes that capitalism with morality is possible, and outlines and defends such an alternative system, which features elements of worker control, a strict inheritance quota, and a redistribution of income that does not compromise either freedom or productivity.
Customer Reviews:
Informative and unique.......2002-12-09
This is a very in-depth and detailed economic as well as philosophical analysis that incorporates morality as a means of justification. Perhaps to difficult for drr8066 to understand, the book is highly detailed and informative. With strong ideas of reformed capitalism, the author well supports his argument. He speaks to various facets and ideals of society including liberty, opportunity, and employment. As a college student, I thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from this intellectually stimulating composition. I strongly recommend it!
Nothing worth reading.......2002-04-23
The author takes too long to say too little. Essentially the claim is that capitalism should be combined with strict redistribution of wealth upon death. No serious thought is given to the effects of this "solution." Don't waste your time. If you want to understand capitalism, read Hazlitt, not Haslett.

Book Description
In 2000 the Institute began a series of lecture, endowed by Michael Novak and the John Templeton Foundation, entitled the Templeton Forum on Markets and Morality. The four papers given in the first series, and revised by the authors, are included in this volume. Brian Griffiths considers the business corporation as a moral community, concluding that 'an independent moral standard is not only something which is good in itself but is also in the interests of shareholders and employees'.
Robert A. Sirico argues that the accomplishments of business directly help to advance social prosperity, health and human welfare. The market is a necessary ally for a 'social order which respects human dignity'.
Norman Barry contends that the market system is 'morally self-sufficient...and develops its own codes of conduct'. Ethical conduct requires companies simply to follow rules and conventions which make for long-run success.
Frank Field discusses the provision of a minimum income in retirement which, in his view, cannot be achieved by markets alone. Some compulsion is required, as in his 'Universal Protected Pension', which is the 'only workable scheme to break the link between retirement and poverty'.
Customer Reviews:
Morals and the market?.......2002-06-23
This short collection of essays is published by the free market Institute of Economic Affairs in London. The occasion for launching this volume was the introduction of an annual lecture series, 'The Templeton Forum on Markets and Morality' based on an idea by Michael Novak.
The four essayists, Brian Griffiths, Robert Sirico, Norman Barry and Frank Field approach the issue from their own philosophical standpoints but in general are in agreement that morality and markets are compatible. Norman Barry's paper for me is the most interesting in that he postulates the development of rules from the emergence of a spontaneous order rather than having a pre-established framework of rules or ethics. While others may argue that markets require a framework of rules to operate in and cite minimal government or an established church, Barry's paper opens up the whole question of what constitutes moral and ethical behaviour to begin with.
It is this particular proposition which holds out particular interest for more lectures like this in the future. Historically there have been thoise in favour of the market who wish to circumscribe it's impact and who cite all sorts of reasons such as the possible collapse of society if free markets are allowed free rein. Ranged against that position are those who despise markets altogether and those who believe that free markets bring true freedom. As someone who believes in the latter, it seems to me that the political changes in the world over the last twenty five years or so have resulted in large gains for those who believe in the controlled markets view at the dtriment of followers of the anti-market view. Organised religion has much to lose by increasing choice for individuals, and much to lose by democracy but that is another story, and has resisted strongly.
This collection of essays seems to be the first shot in a major debate between conservatives and classical liberals which will go to the heart of the arguement about the market.
Why only four stars? Well, I would have liked to have read more papers.

Book Description
Market Cultures examines the spectacular growth of capitalist enterprise among overseas Chinese and Southeast Asians. It does so, not through formal models, but by way of the varied cultures and organizations in which Asian capitalism is embedded. Eschewing talk of a uniform Asian "miracle," the book shows that there existed complex precedents for and against market capitalism in East and Southeast Asia, precedents that reflected subcultural heritages of religion, ethnicity, gender, and class. The case studies illuminate a cultural variety unacknowledged in most analyses of modern capitalism but vitally important for anyone wishing to understand one of the great economic transformations of our time.

Book Description
In this lively and interesting study, G. R. Searle tackles the conundrum at the heart of Victorian life: how could capitalist values be harmonized with Christian beliefs and with concepts of public morality and social duty? Middle-class Victorians who broadly welcomed industrial growth and embraced the doctrines of `political economy' were sensitive to the charge that theirs was a selfish and materialistic creed. Consequently, if public morality was to be reconciled with the market, wage-labour had to be distinguished from slavery, investment from speculation, and entrepreneurial acumen from dishonesty and fraud. These ideas about citizenship and public virtue offered a greater challenge to rampant capitalism than any pressing need to alleviate poverty. Through its exploration of `Victorian values', this book provides lessons for all those engaged in the present-day debate about the moral and social consequences of unleashing free market forces.
