Book Description

Dear Reader: Have you ever wanted to know what it's like to be immortal? To journey through the night stalking the evil that preys on humans? To have unlimited wealth, unlimited power? That is my existence, and it is dark and dangerous. I play hero to thousands, but am known to none. And I love every minutes of it. Or so I thought until one night when I woke up handcuffed to my worst nightmare: a conservative woman in a button-down shirt. Or in Amanda's case, one buttoned all the way up to her chin. She's smart, sexy, witty, and wants nothing to do with the paranormal--in other words, me. My attraction to Amanda Devereaux goes against everything I stand for. Not to mention the last time I fell in love it cost me not only my human life, but also my very soul. Yet every time I look at her, I find myself wanting to try again. Wanting to believe that love and loyalty do exist. Even more disturbing, I find myself wondering if there's any way a woman like Amanda can love a man whose battle scars run deep, and whose heart was damaged by a betrayal so savage that he's not sure it will ever beat again.

5 out of 5 stars Oh My Gosh!!.......2007-10-20

I'm so loving this series. I'm at a lose for words to describe Ms. Kenyon's writing style. It's great. I love the humor in her books. The characters are to die for. A fast read. You won't be able to put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Kenyon book so far.......2007-09-30

This is my favorite Kenyon book by far. ( closely followed by "Fantasy Lover").Yet another story about a handsome god-like man falling for a normal gal because no one else had loved him before. I tell you what, I think any gal would end up falling for any one of these dark hunter types with the way they ooze sexuality so this premise is getting a little old... but anyway. Hot sizzling sexual tension in this one and I like that the girl isn't a wuss. I get a little tired of the way Kenyon loves to torture her leading men with unbearable pain from pent up sexual desires, but it's still a nice story with nice characters and fun smart-mouthed dialogue. It'll even get you tearing up in some spots. Definitely a keeper. I think that I've found the dark hunter for me and I'm gonna stick with this one.

5 out of 5 stars OMG! AWESOME!.......2007-07-13

I don't even know where to start. This book was so much better than Fantasy Lover. I don't know how the others will top this one. I want my own "Kyrian of Thrace".

3 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, the only decent book in the series.......2007-06-11

I hate to admit it, but I thought this book was pretty darn fun. Yes, the dialogue is immature and campy, the hero is tortured and the heroine has a certifiable family, but the sex is steamy and some of the other characters (like Acheron and Nick, the hero's helper) make the story bearable.

After a while, Kyrian of Thrace (the hero) grows on you. What can you say to a man who's tall, blond, and has enough muscles for three guys? But if it came down to it, I'd take Acheron any day. And Amanda (the heroine) proves she's made of some strong stuff in the end, so I appreciate her effort.

If this review seems a little scattered, it's only because people before me have done a good job summing it up.

2 out of 5 stars Romance Novel with fangs..........2007-05-12

Well, I got this book for free as part of an auction of mostly Anita Blake books. I haven't finished it yet, and I'm not sure I'll be able to. I'm writing this review as a guide to others like me who love the beautiful, dark, cold and dangerous vampires of the Anne Rice genre - here are a few clues to help you decifer whether this book is for you.

Characters: Amanda, the heroine, is a sweetly innocent accountant with a very weird family. She's slightly inconsistent - she tries to be normal as possible and doesn't do any of the crazy weird things like witching and vampire hunting, and because of it, she considers herself boring. She's very feminine in her pink sweater, comes across as being a bit soft, then suddenly as they're being attacked manages to kick some vampire butt and mentions she is a black belt. She also seems more freaked out by the hero's driving than by fanged soul stealers jumping at her in the night.

Kyrian of Thrace, the hero (if the name Kyrian of Thrace made you roll your eyes and gag, there's your first clue this book may not be for you) is essentially your typical romance novel hero, with fangs. Yipee! He has the body (pretty much literally) of a Greek god, a perpetual unexplained tan, skintight leather pants, caring, protective instincts, and a tortured past. He dates back to ancient Greece, but tends to finish off sentences in French. ???

Okay, plot. A bunch of the plot and the premise were actually pretty good. Vampires according to Greek Mythology. Quite intriguing. Hero and heroine meet by waking up locked in a basement handcuffed together. Heck, yeah. But the general cornyness of the book kind of ruined the plot for me. Of course upon seeing eachother they fall immediately in *cough* lust. They are released and have to hide somewhere for the day so our perpetually tanned hero can hide from the sun. That day is pretty much continual looped oh-my-God-you're-hot-kiss-kiss-pat-pat-no-we-musn't. Hero can't trust women after the one who betrayed him thousands of years ago, and heroine isn't particularly fond of the idea of sleeping with a corpse. If this last paragraph made you run away screaming, there's your second clue this book may not be for you.

After the initial day spent panting over eachother, they manage to get separated and part ways. Neither can forget the other though, and hero keeps having tender protective urges concerning the heroine. Sniff. So he shows up to pick her up from work in his lamborghini. Woo woo! You guessed it - there's your third clue this book may not be for you.

Okay, not going to spoil any of the rest just in case you like romance novels. If you like romance novels, you may like this book. If most romance novels make you retch, then this book is not for you.

Love those Dark Hunters! She (Kenyan) is one of the best paranormal romance writers ever... right up there with Christine Feehan!

5 out of 5 stars Good fun.......2007-07-28

This set was my introduction to the Dark-Hunter series and I have to say that I am hooked. The story-lines and the character development were far superior to what I was expecting. And heck, they are a fun read.

5 out of 5 stars Great Series.......2007-04-04

A fantastic fictional series. This boxed set inspired me to order several other books from Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter Series. I am very pleased with this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Loved, loved, loved them.......2007-03-09

This was my first taste of Sherrilyn Kenyon and her Dark-Hunter series and now I am waiting with baited breath for my next shipment to get here so I can continue reading her series. I have been an avid Laurell K Hamilton reader and after reading all the current books in both of her series was left desperate and depressed with nothing to read.... THEN I found the Dark-Hunter series!!! I love how each book is devoted to a Dark-Hunter. Getting to know each of them "intimately" and then seeing them make little guest appearances in the next book makes for an awesome read. These are the kind of books you find hard to put down once you start reading. I would recommend this series to anyone who loves the paranormal, adventure, romance-erotica genre. A+, 5 stars, 2 thumbs up!

Book Description

In the twilight between sleep and consciousness, a battle rages. The Dream Guardians harness the energy created in slumber, even going so far as to fuel the sexual fantasies of those asleep to create maximum power. The Nightmares, however, feed on fear and distress, and it is up to the Guardians to protect their charges...

Aidan Cross is a Dream Guardian who pleasures the women he protects through deeply erotic dreams. It is physically satisfying if somewhat empty emotionally, for these women do not realize he is more than a fantasy. Until Lyssa Bates. For some reason, she recognizes him and knows his purpose...and still welcomes him into her bed. But just as their passion threaten to consume him body and soul, a danger lurks, for Lyssa is the Key that has been prophesized to destroy his world...

4 out of 5 stars Going to sleep just gotten a whole lot more interesting!.......2007-09-28

Going to sleep just got a whole lot more interesting!

Sylvia Day has given the reader a whole new dream-world to explore and I for one was feeling very adventurous. With Dream Guardians protecting the Dreamers from the Nightmares it gives the author plenty of playground to set her talent on fire for erotically charged scenes. The combination of storytelling and the passion in this novel is one that I enjoyed immensely giving Aiden and Lyssa enough depth and emotion.

This novel is explaining enough about the Dream Guardian's life to intrigue the reader, especially the Elders who remain an odd group leading the Guardian's in their quest to destroy the Key. A prophecy imprinted in the minds of the Guardian's, the Key will be the downfall of life as they know it so as they protect the Dreamers from the Nightmares they also search for the Key. With this Sylvia Day has written a well paced story, a plot that is interesting and characters that sizzle from the pages with hunger, passion and a bit of attitude. With secondary characters like Connor and Philip the interest for future novels is born and the Elder Sheron adds his own mystery to it as making me guess what the Elders are all about.

Somehow Sylvia Day has made it more than likely that a Dream Guardian will pop up in your dreams, the basics of how they work with the Dreamers, how dreams work by definition, the conscious mind, it's in the small things that makes this story appear more real to me. The ending leaves certain things open which is both torturing as interesting but knowing I have not seen the last of Aiden and Lyssa makes me wondering what else lies ahead for them.

With sizzling heat Sylvia Day has written a novel that will be the ultimate self-indulgence for women all around the world!

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Written and Very Sexy!.......2007-08-17

I love Sylvia Day's writing. I love her voice and I think she's a really talented writer (with great talent at drawing sex scenes to die for). Pleasures of the Night is my very favorite Avon Red title so far (which says a lot given the extraordinarily talented authors in their line).

The universe of dreamers, guardians and nightmares Day has created is wonderfully creative and fresh. The interaction between Lyssa and Aidan is, guh, whee! HOT! Lyssa is a marvelously drawn heroine, I loved her. I loved her strength and yay, oh so freaking yay for a heroine who loves sex! She's no shrinking violet and when Aidan needs help, she risks everything to get it to him.

Aidan Cross, sigh. What a hero. Okay, my weakness is admittedly, the dark haired warrior type who's all gruff but adores the heroine. Aidan is that and more. He's also a dirty talker. What? When it's done well, I think it's hotter than fire and Day does it well.

The backstory about the key, the mystery of what it is, who and what the guardians are and what they might be hiding and the conceptual moving between worlds is done really well here and Day has given readers the beginning of a fresh new paranormal world with the potential to have more stories of some of the very delicious warriors she introduced us to.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasures of the Night.......2007-07-24

According to legend, the Nightmares found a Key into their old world and spread, killing everything. The Elders barely had time to create a fissure within abbreviated space that allowed them to escape into a conduit plane between the human dimension and the one the Guardians had been forced to leave behind. Nearly immortal, the Guardians are dedicated to battling the Nightmares, the Healers and Nurturers are dedicated to healing those damaged. All this is done in the realm of dreams...

The Elite Guardians have one primary mission: find the Key and destroy it. Spending their lives fighting Nightmares, each Elite Guardian searches for that one Dreamer that may be the Key that would destroy their world. For many years now Aidan Cross, Captain of the Elite Guard, has doubted the existence of the Key. One night, Aidan is ordered to approach a dreamer that has built a barrier that stops Guardians and Nightmares alike from crossing into her dreams. Being a legend among his people for being the best Guardian that there has ever been, Aidan prepares himself for an assignment like no other he's faced before. Not expecting to be able to complete his assignment successfully, Aidan is surprised when the Dreamer opens the door to him without a fight.

Lyssa Gates has been sick and has had sleep disorders as far back as she can remember, including a particularly frightening stretch of time where she was plagued by nightmares as a child. After constant misdiagnoses and medications of one sort or another to help her sleep, she's had enough. Convinced that she's not going to live for all that much longer, she's decided that she's had enough of being treated as a pincushion and has given up on the doctors' ability to help. Lyssa spends most of her time at her veterinary clinic where she helps small animals and has an affinity with her patients that few other vets are blessed with.

There was yet another pounding on her door, demanding entrance. Lyssa doesn't know who these people are, but all she wants to do is sleep. Tired, she was always so tired. A deep voice with a luscious accent answers her question of who is at the door this time. Again, the answer she receives is...it is whoever she wants it to be. Idiots. If he can't answer with the truth, he can just go the hell away.

Aidan is surprised when the Dreamer behind the door knows that she's in a dream. After she allows him in, she seems to feel that she can trust him even though she doesn't know a thing about him. There's something different about her she makes him feel. For centuries, he's buried his emotions but this one small woman reaches him without trying, makes him want what he's never allowed himself to. Before long he realizes that he needs her, she fills the void in him that he never thought could ever be filled...he needs to get away from her, fast.

Pleasures Of The Night is one of those rare books that completely took over my consciousness. I stepped into this alternate reality and I not only felt completely at home, it had me believing that `this' is possible. Pleasures Of The Night can only be called an absolutely divine read. Filled with humor, action, danger, love and passion that surpassed even my highest hopes...I can do nothing else but joyfully recommend this book. I'm almost seriously thinking about stalking Ms. Day until she releases the next story in this series!! I can't wait to see Connor and Wager again and I want a Guardian of my own!

If you have restless nights, you are going to want to read this. Pleasures of the Night is a great book and absolute page turner, Your will not want to put it down. 4 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars..........2007-05-25

As a Guardian, Captain Aidan Cross is responsible for keeping Nightmares away from Dreamers. Living on a different plane of existence, Guardians never enter the human realm; they only enter their dreams to protect them. In all his time as a Guardian, it has been whispered that the Guardians must find the Key and destroy it or it will mean the end of the world. Aidan is wary of the myth and only wants to have proof from the Elders. When he encounters a Dreamer that can keep him out, he is intrigued. Unfortunately so are the Elders.

Lyssa Bates has been sickly all her life. Never feeling completely rested even after sleeping 24 hours straight, she is resigned to her fate. Not wanting anymore tests, Lyssa decides to take things as they come. When she meets Aidan in her dreams, she has no idea of the stir she has caused in his world. When Aidan shows up on her doorstep, Lyssa feels like she knows him, but knows she's never met him before. All he tells her is that he's there to protect her.

Pleasures of the Night has an interesting premise. While I did enjoy the book, the writing was a bit stilted in places. I really think that there were too many clichés in the sex scenes including "her mouth watered as his c**k sprang free". There were many questions left unanswered that the reader can only hope is addressed in the future.

Night Elves - Wicked Pleasures By Nelissa Donovan Book 1 in the Night Elves series

Selena DeLaPava is just out for a little fun at her best friend's grad party. But 'fun' can't quite describe how terribly wrong the night goes. One minute she's gyrating in a circle of body-painted ancient history grads, and the next she's flat on her back, buck naked, under a bright summer sun with an equally nude golden god looming over her—commanding her to pleasure herself, and she is compelled to obey.

Serosen Isil-Gan, high prince of the Night Elves, finds her—deliciously naked, and fully enchanted by his licentious cousin. Knowing that it is forbidden to bring humans to Tir na n-Og, Serosen liberates the maid, only to realize too late, that there is much more to the lusty Terran than meets the eye…

Cryptologist Edison Lone's always has been more interested in what people don't say than what they do. He's been following classified ads that someone uses to make contact and sell information from the IBI. Before he can take his suspicions to the CIIC, Edison's reassigned to investigate Selena Silverwood. Surveillance cameras have recorded her working on a personal diary during work hours, leading to the possibility that she's encoding secrets into her prose, and then selling that information. Despite the attraction between them, Edison would never allow himself to fall for a traitor.

The contrast between Selena's outward shyness and her inward heated fantasies haunts Edison. When he invites her to dinner and she transforms from ugly duckling to stunning siren, Edison's hooked. He can't help wondering if she's ready to make her fantasies a reality. For a man who loves puzzles and secretive communications, reading Selena's fantasies provides the most stimulating puzzle he's ever had. The question remains if they can learn to share more than just night pleasures.

Fantasy rules the night in NIGHT PLEASURES by Jule McBride. This sensual romance makes the pages sizzle with its erotic delights. The characterizations are complex with a constant question as to loyalties. Further, the underlying plot of selling information lends the novel fascinating intrigue, keeping the tempo quick as new information is revealed. Moreover, the deft interweaving of the fantasy and reality through excerpts from the diary proves to be quite titillating. Scintillating and seductive, NIGHT PLEASURES comes very highly recommended.

The reason he cannot break her code is that there are no secret messages to decipher. Instead Selena is writing a novel using the office computer. Edison, who is already falling in love with her based on her passionate secrets, courts her to obtain her code. As Selena and Edison begin to forge a permanent relationship, there remain those individuals illegally releasing information and whose preference is to eliminate Edison anyway possible so they can freely leave the country when the time is right.

NIGHT PLEASURES is an enticing romantic suspense loaded with action but emphasizes the sexual tension between the lead characters that heat up the novel's pages. Edison and Selena are an ardent duet whose fervent desires burn through the plot of going undercover to find the information leak. The audience might question Edison's skills that he misreads Selena so badly in spite of the mole that sends him down the wrong path. Readers still will find NIGHT PLEASURES lives up to its title as Jule McBride purveys a fervid romantic suspense.

          Book Description

In New Jersey Dreaming the renowned anthropologist Sherry B. Ortner turns her attention to how social class is lived in the United States and, specifically, within her own peer group. Ortner returns to her Newark roots to present an in-depth look at Weequahic High School’s Class of 1958, of which she was a member. Exploring her classmates’ recollected experiences of the neighborhood and the high school, she provides an ethnographic chronicle of their journeys from the 1950s into the 1990s, following the movement of a striking number of them from modest working- and middle-class backgrounds into the affluent upper middle and professional/managerial classes.

4 out of 5 stars New Jersey Dreaming.......2007-06-16

Ortner returns to her classmates in order to determine their social mobility over 40 years later. She describes the boundaries created people during high school. She also offers a discussion about the complexity of structure versus agency as it pertains to social mobility.
