    Book Description

Newgames are fundamental changes in the conditions of competition and in the way in which we organise our businesses. They involve the creation of new concepts and new ways of thinking about the world around us, whether we be competitors or customers. Such newgame environments can be created by step changes in technology, economics, social behaviour or political and legal conditions.

One of the most dramatic newgames to occur during the last quarter of this century has involved the application of microelectronics technology to the development of the personal computer. This book provides a unique analysis of how the personal computer industry came into being and how strategic competition evolved from its early days up to the present. Looking at winners and losers, it includes consideration of the United States, West European and Pacific Rim markets and discusses how the industry is now forming a global marketplace. In addition, it explains why the overall global computer industry is now going through major restructuring as a result of the “downsizing” phenomenon. It also points the way to yet more newgames in the wake of the rapid convergence taking place between the computer, telecommunications and consumer electronics industries and their respective markets.

However, this book not only provides analysis, but also introduces some new tools and frameworks for thinking about strategic competition and how it evolves over time. In particular, it points to the differences between newgame and samegame strategies and impresses on one that strategic competence in a newgame environment involves much more than leadership in high technology. Instead it recommends significant investment in customer awareness and service, together with rethinking and redesigning organisation structures and systems. Thus it provides lessons for executives beyond the boundaries of the computer industry, and should be read by all managers and students interested in any industry facing newgame environments.

There are more high-salaried women in the workforce today than ever before, yet most females remain seriously underpaid when compared to their male counterparts. Motivational speaker and financial journalist Barbara Stanny decided to find out why by identifying the differences between those who draw the big bucks and those who don't. In Secrets of Six-Figure Women she reveals what makes the leading edge tick, as well as how others can use the information to boost their own paychecks and self-esteem. "For far too many women, financial limits have become a fact of life. The thought of making more is like climbing Mount Everest, a colossal, if not impossible task," writes Stanny. "That's exactly how I used to feel." By examining scores of top moneymakers, along with dozens of those earning below their potentials, Stanny discovered what works and what doesn't. After analyzing the subsequent lessons (i.e., you actually can boost your income without selling out, the requisite traits to do so can be developed by virtually anyone, money really can't buy happiness), she proposes specific strategies for maximizing their impact (intend from the start to succeed, stretch yourself, manage any payoff with care). Stanny professes throughout that she desires to offer "insight, hope and guidance to any of you who aspire to earn more." With this surprisingly practical and ultimately inspirational guidebook, she delivers. --Howard Rothman

      Book Description

Quietly and steadily, the number of women making six figures or more is increasing and continues to rise at a rate faster than for men. From entrepreneurs to corporate executives, from white-collar professionals to freelancers and part-timers, women are forging careers with considerable financial success.

In Secrets of Six-Figure Women, Barbara Stanny, journalist, motivational speaker, and financial educator, identifies the seven key strategies of female highearners: A Profit Motive, Audacity, Resilience, Encouragement, Self-Awareness, Non-attachment, and Financial Know-How.

Based on extensive research and hundreds of interviews, including more than 150 women whose annual earnings range from $100,000 to $7 million, Barbara Stanny turns each of the six-figure traits into a specific strategy for upping earnings. By rigorously fine-tuning them, readers can, step-by-step, climb the income ladder.

In Secrets of Six-Figure Women, Stanny takes you through a process of recognizing why so many women underearn and what we can do to earn what we are worth. From dealing with our fears about stepping out of our comfort zone and challenging longstanding beliefs to helping readers learn to develop a profit motive, this book will help you position yourself to prosper mentally, emotionally and physically.
On a personal note - as a female business owner, whenever I'm tempted to undercharge for my services or allow fear to impact my decisions, I re-read "Secrets of Six Figure Women," to help me stay on the six figure track and remind myself that I'm worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Great advice for any career woman.......2007-06-05

Even if you're already at $100k+, this is a great book for general career advice, and even financial planning. Liked it so much I bought two for friends. Reminds you to be assertive and have confidence and to ask for things; don't get left behind. Good insight into past decision making, too; prevent future mistakes.

5 out of 5 stars every woman should read this.......2007-04-12

It's going on my keeper shelf to be reread once a year.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the read!.......2007-03-15

Great book for all women that want to or have crossed the six-figure line to read. It has alot of inspirational stories of women who had the very same fears, yet got through it.
Definitely a book for all women to have in their book arsenal.

      5 out of 5 stars the only page-turner of a self-help book I've ever read.......2007-01-21

This book is a genuinely fun read. I had trouble putting it down. Self-help books aren't supposed to page-turners, but this one is.

The point of the book is to outline the behaviors and thoughts that are common to all of the high-earning women who the author interviewed... But what makes it a fun read are all of the inspiring stories of high-earning women with diverse backgrounds and occupations. They are generally women who start off giving up their lives (and/or incomes) either for their loved ones, or for their charities, or for their boss, and then making various breakthroughs that made them start taking care of themselves first and foremost, while still caring for their friends and family as much as (if not more than) before, and of course making more money too. Their stories will leave you feeling optimistic about your own professional future, regardless of your field and rank. There are also stories about women who were always proud, positive-thinking, successful people, whose stories are equally as inspiring.

The "secrets" that the author outlines are so obviously essential to success, but so nebulous and elusive in our minds when we set personal goals, that it's invaluable that the author has pinpointed them, named them, described them, and turned them into strategies for success. And by showing the readers specific examples of how these behaviors were used in real people's lives, she gives the reader a concrete example to follow, to use as a starting point for the reader's own self-improvement.

(And a sidenote: This book is not just for women. The strategies the author outlines can be applied to anyone's life, male or female, and the stories are probably just as inspiring for a man as for a woman.)

Don't fool yourself, this is not an easy book and I would not recommend it for a child under the age of about 6 or for a child who has no interest in learning about money as they would become bored easily. This is the kind of book that you "work through" and keep for future reference and always coming back to when teaching kids about money!

Working from home and having a family is not going to be easy, but this book addressed almost all of my concerns. Unlike other home business books, this one focuses on everything from picking an idea for a business to involving your children to evaluating your work on a weekly basis. Donna Partow can make these suggestions from a mother's point of view, and for those of us who struggle with the balance of work and home, this is practical. Her spiritual insights included scripture references on subjects such as procrastination and overworking. A great book for any working mother.

4 out of 5 stars VERY Applicable for today's woman!.......2000-06-15

This book hits the nail right on the head. Working at home is really the best way to help support your family. You're always there for them, and yet you can provide for them at the same time. Donna Partow knows what she's talking about as she wisely gives the low-down on how to start an at-home business. She gives useful tools and tips on how to go about this goal productively while growing closer to God at the same time. Great book. I would recommend it to any woman who has even a faint dream of working at home or putting her talents to a productive use.

        5 out of 5 stars Valuable contribution.......2002-12-05

Review by Dr. Lawrence R. Klein, Benjamin Franklin Professor Emeritus of Economics, University of Pennsylvania

"It takes a rare combination of talent and deep scholarship in two fields - Jewish religion and economics - to provide a sophisticated Jewish interpretation of individual economic activity. Meir Tamari is one of the few persons who truly understands both fields. There have been other religious interpretations of economic terms of behavior and performance, in the form of Catholic pastoral letters and Muslim, Buddhist, or Protestant studies, but very few modern interpretations for persons leading a conscious Jewish life. Tamari's book makes an extremely valuable contribution toward filling the void."

        5 out of 5 stars A must read.......2002-12-05

Review by Herbert Stein, Senior Fellow, The American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research

"What role should ethical guides play in an economy organized on the principle that individuals pursue their self-interest, and what should the guides be? These have always been important questions, but recent scandals, in both private and public life, have brought them forcefully to our attention.

Meir Tamari's new book, The Challenge of Wealth: A Jewish Perspective on Earning and Spending Money, provides valuable illumination of those questions. Jewish sages have been thinking about them, in real-world applications and with biblical precepts in mind, for two millennia. Tamari gives a clear and provocative account of their reasoning and their conclusions. Even readers who do not share the Jewish tradition and may not accept the conclusions that flow from it will get a better view of the issues that must be faced. Beyond that, to see hundreds of supple and serious minds at work over the centuries is a delight."

4 out of 5 stars Jewish Economic Values Tour De Force.......2001-01-22

Meir Tamari has written a serious yet eminently readable examination of Jewish perspectives on earning and spending wealth from an Orthodox Jewish angle. His central thesis: Judaism posits that we are but stewards of wealth, and must act responsibly in our conduct of our financial affairs, as employer, as employee, as transactor in the marketplace, as debtor, as creditor. Jewish sources are accessible and interpreted in a clear manner. This book is stimulating, and helps one to ponder a variety of imporant issues outside the traditional capitalist-socialist dialogue box. This area of Jewish law is not studied to the proper degree in any of the Jewish denominations today.

I read the earlier edition years ago. It's a positive, upbeat book about creating multiple "profit centers" (or income streams, if you prefer to think of it that way) and planning for those "spaghetti days" when nothing is coming in. I wasn't as prepared then as now to put those principles in place, so I'm happy to have the revised edition.

What I like best is that he provides a broad enough spectrum of ideas in his books so that none of them are industry-specific. (By contrast, a lot of consulting books focus on only management consulting and many freelance books focus on journalism or advertising when you might be in IT, interior design, or tutoring.)

The Guru of Guerilla Marketing knows his stuff. So far, I never met a Levinson book I didn't like.

Mel Ziegler started "The Banana Republic" after reading this book. I started my company soon thereafter.

If you have what it takes to question the prevailing paradigm and are determined to be happy at work, you'll find this book a refreshing, important alternative. If they don't get it in Estonia, shame on them, but I know it was the best $10 I ever spent.

2 out of 5 stars Chaotic, destructive, useless.......1999-02-05

There's one thing you won't learn from this book. It's how to earn money without a job.

For your better orientation, I'd like to divide the book in two parts, calling the pages 1 to 100 Part 1 and pages 101-end Part 2.

Reading Part 1, one gets the feeling that Mr. Levinson has never heard the word "system". Page after page after page he talks about everything and nothing, changing subjects as he pleases and turning back to same things every once in a while. Part 1's as chaotic as a book can possibly be. If you would tear out the pages, throw'em in the air and collect in a random order, it wouldn't make any noticeable difference.

Thus, it's not an easy task to tell you about the contents of Part 1, but I'll try. Mr. Levinson begins by saying that you can earn as much money as you wish by working as little time as you wish. (I'll have a million dollars a day by working 15 minutes a day, thank you very much.) Then, Mr. Levinson starts counting skills and qualities that you just have to have in order to earn money without a job. Some of them can be learned, some can't. If you don't have them - well, sorry pal, maybe that nine-to-five job of yours isn't that bad after all. You must have really strong nerves to read it. No one has ever demonstrated me so convincingly and persistently that I'm no good at anything. I got really depressed for quite some time.

Part 1 doesn't even deserve 1 star. In fact, people should be paid for reading it.

Now, on the page 101, Mr. Levinson starts actually delivering some information. You'd never believe it but in Part 2, there are chapters with clearly defined subjects, in logical order, each chapter dealing with a different subject and with only one subject at a time! You shouldn't hope too much, of course - it's still Levinson. However, because of the Part 2, he deserves 2 stars.

Still, the information provided in Part 2, useful as it may be, is nothing extraordinary and is very far from justifying the book's title.

Summary: The book contains some useful information, but definitely not worth the money. If you read the book anyway, you'd better start on page 101, skipping the first part for good. However, my advice is - don't waste your money on Levinson.
