Max Drives Away: A shaped board book (Max Board Books)
ASIN: 0670060747 |
Book Description
Everybody's favorite bunnies, Max and Ruby, are back, starring in their very own ABC concept book. Max's ants have escaped from their farm, and now they're searching for food. The ants start with Max's sandwich, and soon they're everywhere! Fortunately, Ruby comes to the rescue.
Max's ABC teaches the alphabet by featuring a different letter on each page, large and colorful so they're easy to spot. The very youngest readers will love practicing their letters with Max and Ruby.
Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2007-02-06
This is the most entertaining, imaginative alphabet book I have ever read...for adults as well as for children. My two year old grandson loves it. So do his parents because they can read it forever and not be bored!
My 2 year old twins love this book.......2007-01-10
This is a great, fun book to read with your small children. They love the phrases like 'bite bite bite went the ants on Max's birthday cake' and 'down down down went the cranberry juice' (I am writing this from memory so it could be slightly off, but you can get the idea). This has become one of their most viewed books very quickly! My just 2 daughter has memorized a lot of the phrases and 'reads' it out loud to herself.
Finally a fun ABC storybook.......2006-09-22
This book has a fun story to go along with the ABCs. My three year-old begs to read it and loves the idea of ants in your pants. It's a really fun book for both toddlers and parents who get bored of standard "A is for Apple, B is for Boy, etc." books.
Trust Rosemary Wells to make an ABC book a real story!.......2006-08-08
It's always a challenge to make ABC books into a story---it can often seem so forced to include all the letters. Not here! The tale of Max's escaped ant farm ants includes every letter seamlessly, and at the same time is a delight to read! We get to revisit some favorite Max and Ruby themes---Max taking a bath, Max spilling things, Ruby being bossy and Max outsmarting her wordlessly---lots of fun! The ABC theme is not forced---you can read this without even mentioning to your child it's an ABC book, as I did with my almost 2 year old. Each page has a few words highlighted that start with the letter featured, and once my daughter is older, I will point that out to her, but for now, we just enjoyed seeing what Max and the ants were up to! Ants are a great choice as a theme, as my daughter like many toddlers is fascinated with them, and watches them outside every chance she gets.
Another winner from Wells!
A new favorite.......2006-07-12
As a grandmother of 4 children under the age of 5, Max's ABC was a must-have. When they were young, I read the Max & Ruby books to my children, and they were always favorites.
I read this new book to my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter almost every day. It is her new favorite book.
My only criticisms of the book are that some sentences are awkward, and the typo on the M page - a missing "to." In a child's book with few words, one would think a typo like that would not get by.
All in all, another great book from Rosemary Wells.

Book Description
It's family fun from A to Z in this alphabet book that shows kids and their parents laughing, playing and enjoying family life. All of the brilliant watercolors depict families headed by gays and lesbians. "C is for cookies. Both of my dads know how to make great chocolate chip cookies." "L is for lunch. We always pack a picnic lunch when my moms take me to the beach."
Customer Reviews:
My son loved it.......2007-06-18
Cute alphabet for the alternative family. I will need to buy another copy for my second son. The other loved it too much.
Refreshing, yet disappointing.......2004-01-03
I am pleased to see a children's book incorporating LGBT families as characters without presenting LGBT-specific issues as the central topic of the book. Kudos to the authors for choosing to depict a fair amount of racial diversity including interracial families. However, I was disappointed to see a lack of heterosexual couple representation. Heterosexual couples are overrepresented in children's literature generally, so I fear that the lack of representation in books like this contributes to a sense of other-ness: Non-traditional families do exist, but they are so different and separate from the mainstream that they all crowd together in the safety of their own book and are rarely if ever seen interacting with heterosexual families.
It's About Time!.......2003-11-21
It is about time that LGBT families have books that reflect their lives in children's books without being hammered over the head with issues. This is a wonderful book and finally our kids can look at a picture book and see illustrations they can actually relate to.
this book is beyond belief!.......2003-06-07
this book had one problem... to many animal shots. other than that this book really gave me a new out look on life. i've learned that some parts don't have to be hiden. my new found freedom has made me more popular than ever! im making new friends... i spend alot of time with my uncle i never knew! this is GREAT! i recomend this book to anyone who is struggling to find them selves... (my hockey coach recommended this book.. hi mr.Sroman)
This Book is WONDERFUL for non-traditional families!.......2003-01-07
This book is quite groundbreaking, and is excellent in the way it portrays our differences as not-so-different to children. Very thoughtful, well-written - a must have in any child's collection! ABC A Family Alphabet Book, and many more like it, are the focus of our website, www.[...].com, which caters to gay parents and their children.

Wonderful.......2005-08-28
We received this book as a gift a couple of months ago and my son, who just turned three, absolutely loves it! He asks me to read it to him every night. It is warm and loving yet simple to understand. We have fun looking at the pictures together and he always gives me a hug and kiss when we're done reading. We enjoy the book so much that I have bought it for my brothers' kids.
my 3 month old loves it.......2005-04-03
I have been reading a lot to my 3 month old mostly the common rhyming books that everyone reads. I came upon ABC I love you in the book store. I think everytime I read it that I am going to cry. It is a real love poem from a parent to any child. I strongly recommend this book for children of all ages.

T Is for Twins pairs each letter of the alphabet with an adorable color photograph of a set of twins and an insightful rhyme. This celebration of “twinship” teaches the ABCs by placing appropriate language on each page to reinforce the letter/sound relationship. The book features children of different races and ethnicities as well as a set of differently abled twins, giving it universal appeal. Included is a clear acrylic pocket where parents can insert a picture of their twins to personalize the book for the whole family.
Customer Reviews:
Great ABC's and twin book!.......2005-11-17
I got this for my twin daycare girls. They loved it. I loved that it had both the Capital and lowercase letter. Their mom loved that it a frame in the back for their picture. T Is for Twins: An ABC Book is a great way to celebrate being a twin for young kids.
F is for Fun.......2005-07-08
This kids book has great real-life pictures of twins along with fun alliterative ABC words with each one. Would be great for exploring the pictures with toddler twins or learning to read with older kiddos. The pictures aren't quite colorful enough to catch an infant's attention yet.
Nice to see all sorts of twins.......2005-03-07
This book is nice because it has pictures of all sorts of twins. All races, all combinations, all different ages (10 and younger I'd say).
Oxymoron.......2004-11-17
This book is not a typical ABC book. For example, M is for multiple, O is for opportunity, and X is for excitement. Most of the words represent concepts and not enough action words and nouns. The age range is 2-8 years old but an 8 year old would not be interested in an ABC book with no plot. On the other hand, a two year old would be hard pressed to understand the content. Whatever happened to monkey, owl and xylophone?
Book Description
Great for kids and dads to read together, Do Your ABC's, Little Brown Bear is a playful, loving story perfect for children just learning their letters. As Little Brown Bear and Papa Brown Bear romp their way home, Little Brown Bear names the game he plays for each letter-from a grass fight to splashing in the pond to whistling through an acorn hat. Even the youngest readers will enjoy spotting other animals and objects in the artwork to correspond with each letter in this charming alphabet adventure.
Book Description
With heartwarming illustrations and fun rhymes, this alphabet book is perfect for grandchildren and grandparents alike!
Visiting grandparents is always an adventure, whether rooting through drawers, playing pretend, or relaxing and reading together in a comfortable chair. Join two boisterous siblings as they leave home to be guests on their grandparents' farm during different seasons of the year. Providing fun rhymes like "the songs we sing while we sit on the swing," and "an oak tree to climb one limb at a time," both adults and children will have fun singing and reading along together, as they learn the alphabet!
Yumi Heo's whimsical illustrations provide the perfect complement to the rhythm of Ona Gritz's jubilant ABC text. Grandchildren of all ages will recognize themselves in this book's appreciative look at the warmth and happiness that grandparents provide.
Customer Reviews:
Warm words and pretty pictures.......2006-02-24
Working more on sound identification than letter recognition, this is a good alphabet book for the slightly older crowd. With each page or spread featuring a letter sound, the book outlines the fun activities that a boy and girl have when visiting grandparents, from a bubbly bath to a perfect friend for playing pretend and ending with zithers and guitars under zillions of stars. Simple colorful illustrations are a plus with lots of geometric shapes - round smiling faces, triangular bodies, and rain falling in straight lines. A good read-aloud for preschool-1st grade.

Just what I was looking for.......2006-06-17
I was looking for an alphabet book that didn't use complicated words. This is it - perfect for young children. They know all the words and can act them out. They love the sound of it, too. My twins have practically memorized it. I definitely recommend this book.

Learn your ABCs with Miss Spider! Each page has lift-the-flaps where children can learn about letters with a "buggy" twist. With the gang from the Cozy Hole, learning your ABCs was never this much fun!
Customer Reviews:
Why Not Explore the Alphabet with Your Buggy Friends?.......2006-12-06
"Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends: ABC" is an alphabet book, but no ordinary alphabet book. This a lift-the-flap book, filled with all the fun of Sunny Patch. Each flap reveals something new --- Aa / Bb for Adventurous Ants (Ted and Ned) and Bobbling Bounce, Ss / Tt for Surfing Squirt / Tea Time and more.
From what I can tell, a lot of the images (if not all of them) in this book are lifted from other "Miss Spider" books. That's okay though --- readers who are fond of the series will probably recognize familiar images. And if your child is just starting to learn the alphabet, this may be a book he or she can really connect with. From the back of the book --- "Learning your ABCs has never been this much fun!"

Book Description
Stephanie J. Shaw takes us into the inner world of American black professional women during the Jim Crow era. This is a story of struggle and empowerment, of the strength of a group of women who worked against daunting odds to improve the world for themselves and their people. Shaw's remarkable research into the lives of social workers, librarians, nurses, and teachers from the 1870s through the 1950s allows us to hear these women's voices for the first time. The women tell us, in their own words, about their families, their values, their expectations. We learn of the forces and factors that made them exceptional, and of the choices and commitments that made them leaders in their communities.
What a Woman Ought to Be and to Do brings to life a world in which African-American families, communities, and schools worked to encourage the self-confidence, individual initiative, and social responsibility of girls. Shaw shows us how, in a society that denied black women full professional status, these girls embraced and in turn defined an ideal of "socially responsible individualism" that balanced private and public sphere responsibilities. A collective portrait of character shaped in the toughest circumstances, this book is more than a study of the socialization of these women as children and the organization of their work as adults. It is also a study of leadership—of how African American communities gave their daughters the power to succeed in and change a hostile world.
