"The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season! / Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason." Dr. Seuss's small-hearted Grinch ranks right up there with Scrooge when it comes to the crankiest, scowling holiday grumps of all time. For 53 years, the Grinch has lived in a cave on the side of a mountain, looming above the Whos in Whoville. The noisy holiday preparations and infernal singing of the happy little citizens below annoy him to no end. The Grinch decides this frivolous merriment must stop. His "wonderful, awful" idea is to don a Santa outfit, strap heavy antlers on his poor, quivering dog Max, construct a makeshift sleigh, head down to Whoville, and strip the chafingly cheerful Whos of their Yuletide glee once and for all.

Looking quite out of place and very disturbing in his makeshift Santa get-up, the Grinch slithers down chimneys with empty bags and stealing the Whos' presents, their food, even the logs from their humble Who-fires. He takes the ramshackle sleigh to Mt. Crumpit to dump it and waits to hear the sobs of the Whos when they wake up and discover the trappings of Christmas have disappeared. Imagine the Whos' dismay when they discover the evil-doings of Grinch in his anti-Santa guise. But what is that sound? It's not sobbing, but singing! Children simultaneously adore and fear this triumphant, twisted Seussian testimonial to the undaunted cheerfulness of the Whos, the transcendent nature of joy, and of course, the growth potential of a heart that's two sizes too small. This holiday classic is perfect for reading aloud to your favorite little Whos. (Ages 4 to 8)

Book Description

The Grinch, whose heart is two sizes too small, hates Who-ville's holiday celebrations, and plans to steal all the presents to prevent Christmas from coming. To his amazement, Christmas comes anyway, and the Grinch discovers the true meaning of the holiday.

A funny looking guy with weird eyes sets out to see if he can be worse than Scrooge, and pretty much decides to remove xmas from a town, usurping the whole thing.

He soon is taught the error of his Anti Santa Front's ways, and learns to have a good time.

5 out of 5 stars Fun for all, the small and the tall.......2007-06-03

I loved this book when I was younger. And I love it now. It's such a wonderful story and the illustrations and suess-ism are great. I have so many fond memories of this book (as well as the animated movie) that I went and bought myself a copy last year.

5 out of 5 stars The very best Christmas has to offer.......2007-02-22

I'm a traditionalist I have the original printing of this book and felt that all three of my children should have their own copies. I enjoy reading this so much to my children and I'll have to admit I do like to read it for my enjoyment. If you have the means I recommend this highly.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Fairy Tale.......2007-02-03

A very well done book , with inside wonderful paintings and obviously this fantastic Christmas Story, for young but also adult people!!

5 out of 5 stars Fun Dr. Suess story to read during holidays.......2007-01-03

I too still enjoy this story every year at Christmas. Fun to read for the whole family both young and old. To even make it more enjoyable you can play the original soundtrack of the 1966 cartoon version and Boris Karloff is like reading the story to you as you go through the pages while listening to the songs in between. The narration is pretty close to the book since Dr. Suess and Chuck Jones used the book as a guide when they made the animated story. So therefore if you like the book then you will like the soundtrack as well.

My son requested a book in Latin to read. I was so happy to find this one. He is able to read it aloud and understand all of it because he is already familiar with the story. What a fun way to review Latin.

5 out of 5 stars Classic story of inspiration.......2003-07-24

Having been read by children of all ages and even made into a movie, the story of the Grinch is a familiar and beloved tale. The timeless triumph of love and goodwill retains all of its charm in Latin, especially because the authors retain rhyme and meter, even throwing in new wordplay.

The pictures from the original Dr. Seuss book help the reader follow the storyline, and the glossary in the back has every word in the book. Especially in modern context, the Grinch in Latin appeals to us by giving hope when even a grinch can be won over by sincere faith. Thus, while this book is wonderful as a gift to those studying Latin or looking to study Latin, it is also perfectly suitable for those who simply want a good story.

5 out of 5 stars Latin alive and fun!.......2002-11-06

The glossary included in this book is awesome. You will not find a word in the story that is not included. The classic favorite has all of the illustrations we remember from childhood - while the Latin text allows you to practice, and keep building your vocabulary and reading skills. What a wonderful way to bring Latin to your children!

5 out of 5 stars Great voices!.......2007-01-04

These stories are really well read! I play them in the car for my 4 and 3 year olds and I even enjoy listening along. I like that they don't have the page turn dings.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Early Readers.......2006-02-26

My son listens to these over and over with or without the book. He enjoys the narrators and has almost memorized the books.

5 out of 5 stars Old favorites, familier voices........2005-08-21

The children enjoy hearing their favorite Dr. Suess read by the familiar voices we all know.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful Readings!.......2004-04-19

As a homeschooling Mom of 2 small girls, we do A LOT of reading together. What a treat to have someone else do the reading for me every once in a while! Kelsey Grammer, John Lithgow, Walter Matthau, Ted Danson, Billy Crystal and other famous voices certainly do an OUTSTANDING job! The stories are unabridged, which makes it easy to follow along with your own Dr Seuss library. Between the talented author and the unquestionably talented actors, you just can't go wrong...what a great gift to any child or Dr. Seuss fan of any age! My daughters love this CD, and are always asking for one more story or the other disc. SO...we purchased the Green Eggs and Ham CD set today, and are very eager to see how it compares to this fun compilation!

5 out of 5 stars The Grinch.......2002-12-14

Hi my name is Kevin Gentry and I am going to do a book review on How the Grinch stole Christamas. The aothor of the book is Dr Seuss. The genre of the book is fantasy because it is about a faraway place and imaginary people. The number of pages is -.
The setting of the book is in a place called whoville. The plot of the book is yhat the meanest person in whoville the Grinch does not like Christamas and he is trying to ruen Christamas.
The 3 things I like about this book are that it makes me laugh when he dresses like Christamas. And the pictures are cool. And because of the holiday"CHRISTAMAS".
I would like to recomond this book to anyone who hasn't read it yet."BYE"

3 out of 5 stars Fun!.......2001-06-04

This little grinchy book is fun to color, but a little tedious at times. If you have lots of time on your hands, love to color, and love the Grinch, then this book is for you!

3 out of 5 stars The Least Expensive Way to Buy the Classic Story.......2000-12-09

Be sure that you understand that this is a coloring book, with black and white outlines of the images of the famous Dr. Seuss characters from this story, along with the complete text of the original. The pages are reproduced on rather flimsy paper, and coloring in the figures will produce a much less aesthetic result than the full-color version of the Dr. Seuss original in hard cover. On the other hand, if you are on a budget, this is a very inexpensive way to buy How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

One problem with creating a coloring book directly using the original image outlines of this book is that many of the details are very fine. I doubt if I have the manual dexterity to neatly color within most of the lines. So this book could prove frustrating to all but the most talented of colorers capable of great work "inside the lines" and those who don't care about the lines at all. I suspect that the only hope of a neat job would be to use fine point colored pencils and to have a very steady hand and sturdy eraser available. Even then, it will be difficult to put in the background color to make the whole page attractive in the typical Dr. Seuss style.

So my advice is that you gauge your decision about this book to your child's preferences in coloring books. A younger child who doesn't care about coloring neatly, likes to color, and recently saw the movie may be the best candidate.

If you don't have a copy of the story, and this is what your budget allows, then do buy it. It's a five star choice for you. You will be far better off than not having it. ....

This book would have been improved if the pages and the images had been made much larger. Then some of the potential frustration of the small details for the colorer could have been avoided.

If you don't know the story, it's just before Christmas and the Grinch decides he's had it with Christmas celebrations by the Whos in Who-ville. He's an antihero in the Scrooge tradition who takes things a bit further in pursuing his goals than Scrooge ever did. It "may have been that his heart was two sizes too small." He carries out his plan to stop Christmas from being celebrated. Then Christmas day arrives, and he has an epiphany. "'Maybe Christmas,' he thought, 'doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas . . . perhaps . . . means a little bit more!'"

To me, this is one of the best of all timeless tales about the true meaning of Christmas. I hope you will decide to share it with others who will enjoy that message using whichever version of this book is most appropriate. ....

4 out of 5 stars Nice Inexpensive Coloring Book for Older Colorer.......2000-12-04

This is a terrific stocking stuffer. The Dr. Seuss version of the GRINCH Who Stole Christmas arrives as a coloring book. Buyers should note however that it does not look like the book. As advertised, it is a coloring book. As such, the pages are rather thin and beige-colored. Also note, many of the pages' characters are small or thin and would be better suited to the child who colors well and has long abandoned the chunky crayons. A nice little "pick me up" gift for a six or seven year old or for any older person who collects GRINCH items and memorabilia.

This bite-size book is not much bigger than the Grinch's heart, but it packs a world of warmth between its cute little covers. It consists of 25 color photos from the How the Grinch Stole Christmas film interspersed with Dr. Seuss drawings and quotes representing the Whos' cheery, pro-holiday philosophy ("Every size of Who / we can measure / knows that Whobilation / is a time we must treasure") and the Grinch's spoilsport opinions about Santa (whom he calls "Fat Boy") and the Whos ("those yuletide-loving, sickly sweet, nog-sucking cheermongers"). There's not a lot to this teeny hardback with a soft heart, but it should suffice to give kids a chance to relive the film in a state of blissful "Whobilation." And boy, does Jim Carrey look convincing in his Grinch makeup.

My three-year-old loves to push the sounds on this book, but the story is from the movie and not the traditional, which was disappointing to me. One of the sounds is also indistinguishable, and some are a little annoying.

If your young reader was ever hesitant to get involved with the Grinch, this is the play -a - sound book for you. Child pleasing illustrations and sounds that are fun make this a good intro to the story of the Grinch who tried to steal Christmas. Our child was hesitant to read other Grinch books but this particular version we have read and reread at her request. The sounds are fun and holiday spirit abounds while your youngsters can be involved in one of this year's popular stories.
