Cyber Rules: Strategies for Excelling at E-Business offers exactly what its title promises: a series of deliberate considerations and well-reasoned actions designed to help even a technophobic newcomer tackle both the promises and the challenges of the virtual marketplace. Siebel Systems founder Thomas Siebel describes how time-tested business principles are still essential for success. But to achieve full potential in the future, he contends, companies must also have a solid understanding of the way technology will fundamentally affect every aspect of people's lives. These still-emerging policies and procedures of the electronic business world are thus dependent upon a "dual set of rules"; traditional methods, such as identifying target markets and assessing customer needs, now compose only one part of the ultimate picture. It is these "less familiar" and "less commonsensical" practices upon which Cyber Rules subsequently focuses. Part I authoritatively analyzes the direction that business has taken since the first commercial Web sites appeared in 1993; Part II thoughtfully examines the emerging trends that could shape the Net's "second generation"; and Part III suggests how small or large businesses can "get there from here." --Howard Rothman

Book Description

The Internet is driving the growth of a revolutionary commercial paradigm in which size and physical location are surrendering to "virtuality," and in which businesses are facing unprecedented marketing challenges. With the meteoric rise to prominence of the World Wide Web, no manager can afford to be indifferent to this technological revolution, for the Web has dramatically--and globally--expanded customer options, putting uniquely competitive pressures on companies large and small. To survive in business today, you must be online.

But being online--and making it profitable--means much more than throwing up a Web site and announcing, "We're digital." It means being alert to the experiences of E-business pioneers, and being ready to apply their hard-won lessons to your own sales and marketing channels. Cyber Rules is designed to help you do that. Written by the founders of Siebel Systems, Inc., the global leader in Enterprise Relationship Management software applications, it summarizes the dramatic history of the Web's "first generation," explains six critical rules now governing electronic commerce, and provides expert detailed advice for implementing a digital strategy. Whether you're still eyeing the E-business frontier or are already reaping its rewards, Cyber Rules will give you a distinctively insider's perspective on this radical new market space.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read.......2000-12-10

Tom Siebel describes the musts of ebusiness rules in an easy to understand format

2 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2000-10-10

Although I found this book to have some interesting points, I also found it to be a big promotion for Siebel's business. At some points I almost felt like I was reading a thick Siebel pamphlet. I was disappointed to find that the content I thought was most important was buried in the back of the book. If you have never read a book on e-business/e-commerce, this book is worth a try. If you are comfortable with the subject and are seeking more advanced content, skip this book.

2 out of 5 stars Superficial collection of stories.......2000-05-19

:-( The book somewhat disappointed me. It is not well-structured, mostly consisting of some anecdotal stories from famous Internet companies. Most of the offered advice and strategies are very generic and very basic. Topics are not explored at depth, but only identified. I would only recommend this book to a person who is completely new to the world of online business. Do not seek in-depth wisdom in it...

1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2000-04-26

This book was really weak. I recommend Net Ready over this. There are some GLARING inconsistencies in this book. They include, but are not limited to: Yahoo is listed as a search engine... not as a directory. The location of MAE East is erroneously stated as being in NYC. This is just a sample... The book was a waste of time and money. Heed my warnings! Here be dragons!

3 out of 5 stars Overview on Strategies.......2000-02-25

It gives an overview on strategies on the Internet, without showing really exciting news. If you are new to the game, it may be worthwile reading.

From the supplier: Congress plans to examine Internet gambling under the National Gambling Impact and Policy Commission and the Interstate Wire Act may be amended to explicitly prohibit cyber gambling. These developments came as concerns about the growing number of gambling sites on the Internet swell. Minnesota was the first state to establish state jurisdiction over the Internet after filing a suit against a local resort for being served through the Internet in Las Vegas, NV. Meanwhile, Virginia and Wisconsin have been lauded for their efforts at controlling cyber gambling through legislation.

                    Book Description

For busy fundraisers, writing letters of appeal can be confusing and laborious. Now, a guide from the nation's premier letter-writing tutor--direct mail expert Mal Warwick--shows fundraisers what makes the best letters work. Whether its general advice about the most effective mail strategies, or specific advice for those interested in the details of a direct mail campaign, Warwick keeps fundraisers on track when he reminds: "You're writing for results--not a Pulitzer Prize."

In How to Write Successful Fundraising Letters, Warwick's step-by-step model for writing a successful appeal walks you through the critical stages; his topics range from laying the groundwork for a prosperous campaign all the way through to the importance of thanking donors. Supported by an extensive collection of model letters, Warwick's no-nonsense, jargon-free work has helped thousands of fundraisers achieve results.

If you ever think you will have to write a fundraising letter, you NEED this book. Too many people think it is just like writing any other kind of letter but it isn't. There is a rhyme and, more importantly, a reason to it. Don't write a fundraising letter without reading this book first.

I am not an expert in writing fundraising letters. So, when I found a book with a title "How to write successful Fundraising Letters" it was as if I had won the lottery. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it because I was on a dealine to write a fundraising letter for a non-profit organization for which I had volunteered. I ordered the book, and paid just as much to have it deleivered the next day (local bookstores do not carry it). I found the book to be a tutorial and not something I could quickly benefit from. It is written to teach how to properly write and follow-up a fundraising campaign letter. The samples provided were very specific to 3-4 scenarios and did not offer much context. I guess I was looking for a book with hundreds of samples so that I could pick and choose phrases, paragraphs, etc.

I have toyed around with various funderaising letters over the years, reinventing the wheel each time. This book is a tremendous guideline for writing great fundraising letters and has many great examples.
I was able to raise over $100,000.00 in a recent campaign and for the first time I have had a number of people comment on how well the letter appealed to them, and how well it was written. I keep this book close at hand.

                          Book Description

There are over forty thousand unique private foundations in the United States, with total assets of approximately $300 billion. As these foundations grow in number and size, it is increasingly important for grantseekers to understand their missions and modes of operation. This volume of New Directions for Philanthropic Fundraising offers insights into the changes taking place in different types of foundations, including special-purpose, regional, community, and international foundations. The authors suggest practical ways that grantseekers can improve relations with foundations, and show how grantmakers and other foundation staff enhance their effectiveness--and better serve their constituents? needs--through strategic planning and alliance building.

This is the 23rd issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Philanthropic Fundraising.

                            Book Description

No one prepares the new dean or health care executive for the fundraising aspect of their profession. Rather, it is one of the skills that is expected but not explicitly taught.

Here, a former Dean and a Director of Major Gifts for a renowned nursing institution, with a combined 50 years in the profession, present an explicit, hands-on guide to successful fundraising among individuals, foundations, and corporations.

From the basic principles of development to the specifics of tax regulations and the sometimes delicate matter of stewardship, this book articulates strategies for success. Case studies, extensive support materials and illustrative tables makes this an accessible and indispensable tool for health care executives.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Resource- Excellent Book!.......2007-10-05

I ordered this book because it was required for a graduate class that I was taking, but I found it to be an excellent resource. The author provides numerous examples for how to apply the material, but also provides additional internet resources to access other information in the field of nonprofit management and fundraising.

I would definitely purchase additional resources from this author again.

I also use this book as a textbook in a fundraising class and the students consistently rank this as a great learning tool and resource that they will use in their careers. Excellent real-life examples and practical knowledge on every aspect of non-profit fund development.

4 out of 5 stars Text Book for Fundraising Newbies to Experienced Professionals.......2005-10-24

Using this book as "the" textbook for a UCSD Extension class on Fundraising Introduction and Processes; The course is the first required course for a Certificate Program in Fundraising and this is the text book selected. Very in depth, overview of fundraising, annual giving campaigns, special fundraising events, planned giving, grant-writing etc. Covers it all in depth and simple to understand. Great book! Plus its way cheaper thru Amazon than in the UC bookstore ;-)

Ciconte's book is insightful and thorough. This new edition is especially helpful, especially for the purposes of this reviewer, when it comes to Internet applications and computer programs. A well-written and fairly current fundraising resource guide.

It is excellent, very thorough, and covers all major areas for an organization's fund raising program. Book Description

Until recently, organized philanthropy in the United States has largely ignored Hispanic population groups, due to language and cultural barriers. In this issue of New Directions for Philanthropic Fundraising, the authors report on research conducted with leading Hispanic philanthropists, fundraising professionals, and nonprofit executives about the current status of giving and asking in Hispanic American communities and their attitudes and beliefs about philanthropy. Chapters examine the effect of education and religion on Hispanic philanthropy; describe the development, implementation, and results of a fundraising training program conducted in Hispanic nonprofits; and illustrate how Hispanic women are transforming the nonprofit sector and philanthropy.

This is the 24th issue of the quarterly journal New Directions for Philanthropic Fundraising.
