Nothing particularly creative in that book that anybody with some common sense wouldn't come up with.

5 out of 5 stars Just Plain Fun.......2007-04-24

Being a parent and a science teacher, I really love this book. It takes me back to my younger years when it was fun to launch anything more than 10 feet and still have all of your hair intact. What fun this book is! Gurstelle is great!

5 out of 5 stars ZOOOOM!!.......2007-04-13

If you like launching projectiles at incomprehensible speeds, making very loud noises, or launching more projectiles at lightning speeds then this book is for you it includes a few types of spud guns, a kite that you light on fire and the hot air slowly lifts it off the ground, three rockets two of which dont use fire making them relitively safe and some notes on safty (how not to blow yourself up) and a bunch of other stuff

great book!!!!!!!!!!

This an entertaing book. It would be excellent for anyone with kids. If more children and parents worked on these fun projects the kids would get an education, get out of the house and away from Video Games.

5 out of 5 stars fun and easy.......2007-01-10

We have tried the tennis ball cannon from this book so far and had great success with it. It was a great weekend project that was cheap and easy with great results. Great for summer time fun with the kids.

2 out of 5 stars Not to be Taken Seriously.......2007-09-08

I like model and high power rocketry. This book, though, is not for those with similar interests. It is for those who would like to learn how, theoretically, such rockets could be made into improvised weapons. There are not particularly good or accurate weapons, they have the form rather than the functionality of the real thing.

It is interesting in a curious way. The ideas put forth are certainly correct in their conception. The details are all very fuzzy, however. This is probably for the best. Most of what is contained in here is DEFINITELY NOT SAFE. The author says as much.

I wouldn't take this very seriously. I'm rather sorry I took it at all.

5 out of 5 stars I keep a bound copy of this book.......2007-08-21

It's not a real thick volume but it's fun. Model rocketry is what got me interested in joining the Army and going into Air Defense Artillery. If anyone out there is disappointed that they can't use this book to build a Stinger out an Estes "Super Omega Plus" model rocket, then they're idiots. Post-911 or pre-911, a fun book.

2 out of 5 stars Funny--But Really Dumb.......2007-06-16

Yet another Paladin Press classic, this book purports to contain hidden secrets of how to build supposedly destructive devices. And like most similar titles, it doesn't tell you anything that the average mischievous 12 year old could not think up--or that grown-ups could not acquire with a few minutes of internet searching.

Allegedly a technical manual, this is a slim volume of skimpy text and VERY basic drawings of assorted model rocket and "warhead" designs, most of which the author clearly sketched without ever having tried them and many of which simply would not work (thank heaven!).

As a work of somewhat offbeat humor, "Backyard Rocketry" certainly delivers some light laughs--not all of them intentional. But actually following any of the directions contained within would be illegal at best and quite possibly fatal at worst. Just don't do it.

Rest assured, someone picking up this book with the "wrong" motives will not find it useful. If anything, this treatise casts an undeserved shadow on the legitimate hobby of model rocketry. Which would be a far better subject for a book, to my mind.

1 out of 5 stars ZERO STARS. Completely useless, hazardous and idiotic........2004-11-17

This is a pathetic piece of compressed sewage.

Maybe back in the mid 1990s it was funny, ha-ha, but it is not any more. Not since 9/11 anyway. Anybody reading this book stupid enough to follow any of its suggestions is likely to either blow their own head off or end up in jail on terrorism charges.

It has nothing to do with a sense of humor, it has to do with having more than one brain cell in your head in operating condition. A far more practical book than this one would be any one of the numerous texts available on the captivating field of animal husbandry.

Book Description

Food is an important and endlessly fascinating lens for social and cultural analysis -not only for anthropologists, but also for scholars of history, literature, cultural studies, political economy, and public policy. The subject is a central idiom for understanding cultural practices and for teaching about culture on many levels. The Cultural Politics of Food and Eating is a collection of readings that uses the study of food as a vehicle for addressing broad themes that are emerging in social anthropology: globalization, capitalism, market economies, and consumption practices. The Cultural Politics of Food and Eating offers an ethnographically informed perspective on the ways in which people use food to make sense of life in an increasingly interconnected world. It includes studies from eleven countries across five continents on such hot topics as sushi, fast food, gourmet foods, and food scares and contamination.

3 out of 5 stars Left me hungry for more!.......2007-05-20

The book makes an interesting case using good evidence for most of it's text.

Susanne Friedberg argues that in spite of egalitarian origins to transform the world, the organic/natural foods revolution begun in the 1960's has done little to eradicate the conditions in other countries--where tainted food is a defacto way of life for people. The most careful washing cannot fully eliminate everything every time.

However, ongoing disparities in America where people on public assistance cannot presently afford to eat healthy--regardless of how much they want to also needed to be addressed in Warren Belasco's essay on how the hippies introduced organic food. Low-income people do not necessarily have to contend with the same degree of food impurity as overseas, but are also subject to economic disparities in their access to healthy food. They ironically remain stuck with the brands the hippies and their present day counterparts shun because it IS the cheapest to purchase with the resources they do have and the organic companies have not found a way to make the American dollar stretch further. Why should only certain groups of people be able to eat safe and healthy food?

The editor and her contributors are empathetic to the subject matter--which I have not previously seen in other anthologies. Yet, they mostly present it with a critical perspective, demanding that the reader examine previous assumptions about the relationship between food and politics--and our own personal relationship.

5 out of 5 stars A useful and timely collection.......2005-10-20

Despite the fact that, through some oversight, the editors neglected to include any of my own writing in the collection, it is the state-of-the-art in the cultural anthropology of food. I will definitely be using it as a basic text in my food and culture class. The chapters include contributions by many of the best people working in this growing subfield, and they really show how much the field has changed in a relatively short period. It has a good balance of cultural analysis, political-economy and culture history. I plan to supplement it with Lien and Nerlich's "The Politics of Food" collection from Berg, which is more issues-oriented and has more on food safety, the politics of localism, and fast/slow conflicts.

5 out of 5 stars Culture through the lens of food - and vice versa.......2005-08-15

This book is a collection of essays that were previously published in journals such as "Foreign Affairs" and "journal of consumer culture." The authors are anthropologists, political scientists, and historians among others. Most essays focus on one piece of food item, brand or food related issue (such as McDonalds, green beans, or Mad Cow disease) and examines this issue within the context of a country (such as China, Burkina Faso, or the U.K.) The essays are academically written, but highly readable and they give interesting and unique information about the country as well as the food issue in question within the context of the country. The overall theme of many of the essays seemed to be that food influences culture, and culture interprets food so that the influence is two-way. Some of the articles were fascinating to read. For example, I enjoyed learning about how McDonalds in China was accepted into the local culture, and how its meaning in China is significantly different from that in the USA. I liked learning about the functions served by Indo-Pak grocery stores in Indian communities, of how sushi became a well known product across the world, and how and why French chocolatiers opposed Belgian ones. The most interesting article to me was one about the reactions to genetically manipulated crop in the USA and Europe, and how these reactions affect those in developing countries in adverse ways. Even if I did not know anything about the country in question, the book gave sufficient background information about the country and the issue to make it interesting and exciting. While reading about one product or issue, I found that I learned a lot about the country and its people.

The essays differed in their approaches to the issues. I guess this reflected the backgrounds of authors (whether they were anthropologists or political scientists). For example, there were two articles about McDonalds in China where the writings mainly focused on how McDonalds was accepted and interpreted in China, without a discussion of any health implications of these changes. As someone who read Fast Food Nation, I was saddened by the seemingly unquestioned acceptance of junk food into foreign countries and was curious to know the most recent developments if any. This issue was more prominently discussed in essays written by political scientists. One author discussed the implications of fast food for Mexican diet, and rising health concerns traced to changes in diet, which I found interesting and important.

All in all, this is one very good book. I highly recommend it if you are interested in food, culture, or both.

4 out of 5 stars Globalization is complex.......2004-08-19

I disagree with the other reviewers. The study of anthropology often creates more questions than answers--that is why the field intrigues me. As for the reviewer wanting a simpler treatment of the subject... Fine in theory, but globalization is COMPLEX. The introduction of the book offers some themes to observe and asserts that 1) Globalization is not only about passive receivers of global imperialism. 2) Global ideas and products flow in many ways (not just core to the periphery). 3) Many circuits of globalization circumvent the west (or global north). The subsequent chapters then follow these threads.

I come from a critical background (i.e. that globalization is evil), but the examples in the book show that not all aspects of globalization are troubling. As for Appadurai and invention of words... keep giving the chapter another read. The man is simply (complexly?) a beautiful writer.

3 out of 5 stars Creates more questions than answers.......2004-06-28

I read this book in a "Political and Economic Anthropology" class and found it to be somewhat disappointing. Cultural anthropology, by its very nature, is case study oriented, so it is no surprise that the articles focus on many different places and situations, many of which are interesting to read. However, I think the book failed to pull all the very diverse articles together and come out with a point or thesis for the anthology as a whole.

Throughout much of the reading, even after classroom discussions, I found myself asking "so what's the point?", "what is this book supposed to be teaching me about globalization in general?", "what does this particular article have to say about the broader processes involved with globalization?", etc... The introduction, written by the editors, is a good introduction to the concepts of globalization. The second article by Appadurai is theoretical in nature, but is almost incomprehensible. He uses so much jargon (and even some made-up words) and allusions to other theories that unless you already know what he's trying to say, his article will do little more than frustrate you. The remainder of the articles deal with individual case studies by various researchers.

This anthology contains some interesting articles that give glimpses into how some people and cultures are affected by and interacting with forces of globalization. In that regard, it is pretty good. However, if you are looking for an approachable, theoretical introduction to globalization from an anthropological standpoint which augments it argument with case studies (as oppose to just including them obstensibly for their own sake), you might want to look elsewhere

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-06-04

Characteristic of this reader is the bothersome overlap of topics. It dramatically fails to give insight in theories of globalization itself and the link between these theories and global reality. After studying this reader even experienced students of Anthropology will give anything for something that is less grandiloquent and more useful because of it's simplicity.

    Book Description

The Anthropology of Globalization provides an exciting introduction to global change, focusing simultaneously on the large-scale processes through which various cultures are becoming increasingly interconnected, and on the ways that people around the world mediate these processes in culturally specific ways. This new edition also addresses the limits of global mobility and connection.Inda and Rosaldo have assembled some of the finest and newest work on globalization published in English by both established and emerging anthropologists, including Arjun Appadurai, Anna Tsing, Aihwa Ong, Didier Fassin, Sally Engle Merry, Tom Boellstorff, Karen Ho, and Andrew Lakoff. Beginning with a revised contribution by the editors, this second edition also includes new readings, helpful section introductions, and recommendations for further reading. It provides readers with a valuable resource on local and global processes that both promote and constrain movement and linkage.

5 out of 5 stars Unseen Links Bind Distant People, Locations.......2001-05-22

The world we live on is one planet. It's a simple, obvious observation, but Waters seems to spend much time illustrating this idea. But his view of globalization is not quiet so simple. That we share the same space is a geometrical given. He illustrates even in his preface that people throughout the world have become interrelated. "Tasmanians know that they live on one planet because other people's aerosol sprays have caused a carcinogenic hole in the ozone's layer over their heads, because their relatively high rate of unemployment is due to a slump in the international commodities markets, because their children are exposed to such edifying role models as Robocop." He seems to illustrate that for better or worse; humans throughout the planet are now inextricably linked to one other on economic, political and culture levels. These links are span the global based on their mobility. Waters defines their mobility according to their nature: "material relationships localize, power relationships internationalize and symbolic relationships globalize." Economy for him has a high level of symbolic mediation because it is intrinsically entwined with `symbolic tokens' that would originally have been money, under Giddens' description, but today extend to even less finite concepts. While cash in the form of coins or bills previously had a physical form, today, the concept of money or capital is, in many cases, just numbers on a transaction sheet. Waters views the economic realm as highly symbolic, highly fluid and highly globalized giving it the capable of moving most rapidly over the planet and subsequently the providing strong impetus for global interactions and subsequently globalization.
