Product Description

Despite the questions of her roommates and the objections of her fiance, Jamie Evans persists in enrolling in a college course that seems an odd choice for a young woman of her background. What no one can know is that the course, The Psychology of the Lesbian Experience, will propel Jamie onto a journey of self-awareness and realization. For the required fieldwork, Jamie is paired with the darkly beautiful Ryan O'Flaherty - a boldly "out" and sexually adventurous lesbian. This somewhat unlikely pair, slowly, and sometimes painfully, becomes aware that what they feel for each other is more than just friendship. The temptation to live life on her own terms is great, but so are the costs, as Jamie struggles to break out of her establishment-fashioned, pre-ordained mold. If she can summon the courage, however, she might find out that love, and life, have so much more to offer than she ever dreamed.

I would not waste my money on these books. The oginal book entitle "I found my heart in San Francisco" was great. It is obvious that she is trying to stretch a good thing into other books and making the follow up ones very weak. Read the orginal and skip the rest.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful beginning to a fantastic series.......2006-06-13

Awakenings is a beautiful book. Ryan O'Flaherty, UC- San Francisco's lesbian Casanova, meets & befriends fellow student Jamie, who is straight. Their friendship triggers a journey of self-discovery for Jamie. Ryan's assumption that Jamie is an adult capable of making decisions & setting her own goals gives Jamie the support she needs to start living her own life, instead of the life her parents expect. (Marry a lawyer like Daddy, join the Junior League & country club, and have a bunch of kids.) Soon Jamie is asserting her independence, much to the consternation of her father & fiance.

Meanwhile, Jamie encourages Ryan to seek actual intimacy with a girlfriend rather than slake her libido in a series of one night stands & short affairs. Will their friendship become something more? Hello?? This is the first book in a series! Of course it will! But watching Jamie & Ryan awaken to the possibilities right under their noses is a wonderful reading experience.

You can read the original draft of this 460-page book online, but I definitely prefer the print version. It has better editing & the language is a bit tighter. It's also a *very* high-quality book & a pleasure to hold. Awakenings is worth every penny. Plus shipping. :D

I've seen several different versions of this story and finally got my hands on the full-length published version. There are the individual books available on-line, several of these have recently been published, and there is this compiled published version. The book is thick and the story is complex, but it's well worth the read.

Meagher brings us the characters of Ryan and Jamie. Ryan lives with her firefighter father and several of her brothers. They live a frugal, yet happy life. Ryan is a student who works as a personal trainer to help pay for school. She is also a player who seems to have a different woman every day. Ryan meets Jamie, her complete opposite, when they are paired together in a lesbian studies class. Jamie is engaged, comes from a wealthy family with distant parents, and is certainly straight - or is she?

As they get to know each other better and tackle some of the course's special projects, things begin to confuse Jamie. Eventually, she can no longer resist her newfound feelings. Of course, Ryan finds herself irritatingly drawn to the other woman and sees her own life change in ways she had never considered. The major changes in each woman's life uncover that they have more in common than once thought.

Oh, there is also an incredible cast of supporting characters. Jamie's mother and father, her grandfather, and her roommates are (mostly) endearing. Ryan's family is unbelievably wonderful and comical. The university setting is ideal for this coming of age story.

Well worth the time to read, IFMHISF is truly a good story and will stay in my collection for the indefinite future.

Susan Meagher has created a classic with this book. Unfortunately this version of the book is now out of print - sadly the publisher was unable to stay in busiess. BUT the full series is now being published by Brisk Press. The series starts with Awakenings which has similar content to this consolidated book but continues with Beginnings, Coaleascence, Disclosures, Entwined and Fidelity. Susan is publishing a new "book" in the series approximately every 6 months and plans to continure to the letter X. Check out briskpress.com to buy your copies of the series books.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful love story!.......2006-11-30

Being new to lesbian romance, I was hesitant to start this series. I had read this author's other works and loved it all so finally gave in and decided to give the series a whirl. Good decision! I fell in love right along with Ms. Meagher's characters, Jamie & Ryan. In fact, I have gone on to read the current 16 novels in this series, not once but twice.

The writer gives us lots of detail, you actually see these characters come alive and quite easily picture the world they live in. Ms. Meagher captures the range of feelings that one experiences when you're falling in love, especially if its with the wrong person! Very believeable and likeable supporting characters as well. If you're interested in reading other works by this talented author.

5 out of 5 stars One of the great classic ubers.......2004-08-03

One of the best coming out novels, lesbian love stories, picaresque sociological treatises, or works of erotica that you will ever read. A monumental achievement (the author intends to write a novel length book about her characters for every letter of the alphabet) and a distaff look at life in S.F. every bit as significant as "Tales of the City." Both of the ubers are young here and still in school, but it gives them an awful lot of memorable growth work to do for, with and towards each other. This would make a great series for the proposed gay channel, every bit as compelling as "The L Word." And more romantic.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome stuff.......2004-04-26

This is by far the best "uber" fic I've read. I wasn't sure at first if I would like it, but Ryan, Jamie, Martin, and the rest of the clan quickly pulled me in and captivated me. The story was very interesting and I found myself not wanting to put this book down. Ryan is wonderful (could there really be a woman that great out there?) She and Jamie compliment each other very well, and I quickly ran out and read the rest of the series. The sex scenes are hot, hot, HOT and are very well written. I've read some "love" scenes that were just so "BLAH" that I couldn't stand it. SX Meagher takes her time and writes out an entertaining and vivid scene with these girls...which will have you drooling in no time. Very good story indeed! Would recommend to all my friends.

Ryan and Jamie are introduced in Awakenings, the first book in the I Found My Heart in San Francisco series. I'd suggest reading Book 1 to fully appreciate this couple and their love story but it isn't a requirement. Susan tackles the feelings and anxieties of coming out that every lesbian faces no matter what age she is. Plus she writes a sweet, funny and sexy love story that is appealing to any lover of romance. Buy this one - you won't be disappointed.

Beginnings tells the story of Jamie & Ryan's courtship & deepening feelings. It's a lovely story. Trust me; any of Susan Meagher's lesbian romances are worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Another EXCELLENT offering from and EXELLENT writer.......2007-07-22

If you are tired of reading Lesbian Romance where the whole point is the sex, or the author is too shy to be proud of the sexuality of her characters. Or where the problems are contrived and the ending is sappy. You've found the right harbour. SX brings quirky and realistic characters to life. Poses real life questions for them and then has us rooting for them as they make their human way toward a resolution. Every book reinforces my faith in the human family without being unrealistic and every book makes me think. The quality of the writing is professional, lively, and vivid.
Thanks again for another book for my permanent library.

5 out of 5 stars Meagher's Always 5 stars.......2007-07-18

Cherrry Grove isn't my all time Meagher favorite, I Left My Heart in SF and Arbor Vitae would hold that honor, but earns 5 stars just by virtue of being a Meagher book. I absolutely love her work. She has humor, angst, great characterizations, wonderful plots and just plain fun reads, and Cherry Grove is no exception.
I'll read anything "Meagher" and know when finished I'll feel very satisfied....... and she doesn't really know how to write a "little" book, you DO get your money's worth.

After many months of allowing their relationship to grow and their love to deepen, Jamie and Ryan FINALLY consumate their relationship in this 3rd book in the I Found My Heart in San Francisco series by Susan Meagher. The book is filled with sweet, passionate, sexy love making. You will NOT be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars What happens after they say, "I do. ".......2006-06-13

Finally! They're actually going to get busy! This is the honeymoon book. It's a bit light on plot, but the love scenes are very well-written. This author knows the difference between a hot sex scene & a hot love scene! Jamie discovers the joy of lesbian sex & Ryan finally ends months of tortuous celibacy. There isn't a lot of conflict, although we do get a glimpse of how hard it's going to be for Ryan to accept Jamie's wealth.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet romantic love story.......2007-08-04

This is the continuation of Jamie & Ryan's love story that was begun in Susan's book - Awakenings. The beauty of this series is that Susan takes the time to flesh her characters out. Each character in the story becomes a friend the reader will look for in the next book. She is also a master at conveying the feelings of new love. Susan doesn't write short books so you always get your money's worth.

5 out of 5 stars More, more, more! .......2006-06-13

Susan has done it again! Disclosures is yet another fantastic addition to the I Found My Heart series. This book deals with Jamie & Ryan settling into married life, and with Jamie coming out to family & friends (not always voluntarily). Jamie has to get used to being perceived as a lesbian even if she isn't ready to adopt the label yet. Ryan begins to grasp just how much money Jamie really has & must adjust to the lifestyles of the rich & famous. Maids, gardeners, car detailing services, expensive restaurants, buying a Lexus with Amex - it's quite a culture shock for a scholarship student who has been saving for grad school by pinching every penny until it screams.

Susan also does a nice job showing the different characters' reactions to Jamie's new lifestyle. Jamie has always been closer to her father than her mother, & she predicted that her father would accept her new lifestyle quickly & her mother would be somewhat uptight. Instead, her dad freaked out & her mother was fine.

The print version of Disclosures is a well edited, high-quality book. The cover is a nice, heavy stock, the design is beautiful, and the binding didn't show any tilt or creasing even after reading it twice. Brisk Press is definitely a cut above many of the other `Uber' publishers. Don't settle for the web version of this series; the books will be a fine addition to your lesbian fiction collection.

Book Description

Christopher R. Martin argues that the mainstream news media (and the large corporations behind them) put the labor movement in a bad light even while avoiding the appearance of bias. Martin has found that the news media construct "common ground" narratives between labor and management positions by reporting on labor relations from a consumer perspective.

Martin identifies five central storytelling frames using this consumer orientation that repeatedly emerged in the news media coverage of major labor stories in the 1990s: the 1991-94 shutdown of the General Motors Willow Run Assembly Plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan; the 1993 American Airlines flight attendant strike; the 1994-95 Major League Baseball strike, the 1997 United Parcel Service strike, and the 1999 protests against the World Trade Organization's conference in Seattle.

In Martin's view, the news media's consumer "take" on the labor movement has the effect of submerging issues of citizenship, political activity, and class relations, and elevating issues of consumption and the myth of a class-free America. Instead of facilitating a public sphere, the democratic ideal in which the public can engage in discovery and rational-critical debate, Martin says, news organizations have fostered a consumer sphere, in which public discourse and action is defined in terms of consumer interests—the impact of strikes, lock-outs, shut-downs, and protests on the general consumer economy and the price, quality, and availability of things such as automobiles, airline flights, and baseball tickets.

4 out of 5 stars Critical Analysis: Framed! Labor and the Corporate Media.......2005-04-12

The purpose of Martin's book is to inform people of the politics of work and to inform people that unions are not just, "belligerent organizations that protect lazy, unproductive workers". It could be read by anyone, however; it is aimed toward people who have developed a biased opinion due to the media and therefore, the book is meant to inform and persuade. This book would also be suitable for people who do not know a lot about labor unions because Martin explains what they are, not just the connection they have with the media. Martin researched and wrote about labor and the media for ten years, he is a professor at the University of Iowa, and he knows a lot of professors from other highly respected universities. One such school is the University of Michigan where he attended. Many professors contributed their knowledge to this book. Therefore, this book is very credible. Martin explains the strikes and issues in chronological order and uses pictures, quotes, and statistics to aid in his argument. This helps the reader learn and understand better because the book is organized, the pictures are interesting, and the quotes and statistics keep you aware that the material is credible. The book was published in 2004 and all of the issues discussed took place no earlier than the 1990s. My connection to the book is that my mom is an American Airlines Flight Attendant and a supporter of labor unions.

"Framed! Labor and the Corporate Media," by Christopher Martin.

I didn't need to be told that the corporate media do a horrendous job of covering organized labor. What this book tells us that I have not seen analyzed so well elsewhere is what the thought processes look like that lead to this horrendous coverage.

It's simple enough to observe that the media support capital and work against the concerns of workers. But why are there exceptions to this rule? And what are the thoughts going through a producer's head? I am certain that few producers or editors routinely think to themselves "Hey, here's a good way we can hurt workers." It would hurt the members of the media themselves too much to think such thoughts. What do they think instead?

According to Christopher Martin, five main themes organize their thinking. The first is that the consumer is king. The media are able to cover labor disputes without touching on the workers' demands or difficulties and while blaming labor unions, through the simple guise of viewing all events from the point of view of the consumer. For example, more attention is paid to tourists' travel delays than to the reasons airline employees have for going on strike. And through the "objective" technique of quoting "both sides" without commenting on the accuracy of the claims, the media often manage to distort the facts, even though that is not what they think of themselves as aiming to do. The direction in which they distort the facts is effected by the second and third themes.

The second theme is that the process of production is none of the public's business. The point of view that the media adopt is one of a consumer uninterested in how a product or service is produced and only interested in acquiring it as soon as possible for the lowest possible price. This theme eliminates work - you know, that activity that most of us spend most of our time doing -- from the acceptable topics for our public discourse.

Third, the economy is driven by great business leaders and entrepreneurs. Because members of the media believe this, it makes sense for them to discuss a labor issue with a panel made up exclusively of owners and managers. This is "fair and balanced" if you have convinced yourself of these themes.

Fourth, the workplace is a meritocracy and those who run into trouble have no one to blame but themselves. This thinking grants to all employers freedom from responsibility for how they treat workers. If they treat workers harshly, the workers deserved it. This must be so once you have accepted as an article of faith that the workplace is a meritocracy.

Fifth, collective economic action is bad. Members of the media think they are fair to everyone by being fair to them as individuals. While collective action may benefit many individuals, our shapers of opinion have determined that it is unacceptable and convinced themselves that it causes inflation or disrupts consumer behavior or leads to violence.

Many members of the media will, I think, tell you that they believe these five propositions. These are not the underlying Marxist machinations that drive our media. Rather, these are what our "anchors" and "analysts" actually believe, more or less sincerely.

This book illustrates the uses of these five frames with well-documented and well-reported case studies of the media's reporting on four strikes, at General Motors, American Airlines, Major League Baseball, and United Parcel Service.

Martin concludes that the following steps should be taken:
"1. Workers and allies must protest visibly, vigorously, and strategically.
"2. Labor Unions should use a multifaceted approach.
"3. Labor Unions should utilize nonmainstream media.
"4. Labor unions should seek to maintain and encourage diversity in media ownership."

All good points, and even better, Martin says that a high-profile daily labor publication should be created on the internet. I think Martin is wrong to dismiss the question of whether to produce a hardcopy paper. Many do not get their news from the Internet. But starting online makes a lot of sense for financial reasons.
