Book Description
When the first commercial flights took off in the 1930s, stewardesses were registered nurses whose duties included swatting flies and helping passengers read railroad timetables in the event of forced landings. In the 1950s, stewardesses were viewed as wives-in-training, as adept at preparing a baby's bottle as mixing a martini. By the swinging ’60s and ’70s, female flight attendants were considered successful marketing tools, sporting microminis, hot pants, and buttons that read "Pure, Sober, and Available" to lure male business passengers on board. Come Fly with Us! explores the unique history of this industry pioneered by women, tracing changes in the flight attendant's role — from flying nurse to airborne sex kitten to today's custodian of safety and service. Stunning visuals from airline archives and early flight maps, promotional brochures, and print advertisements re-create a sense of the early days and underscore the dramatic changes that have occurred in this dynamic industry.

i had a great time doing the makeup for this book.......2007-07-26
I had a great time doing the makeup for some of this book. They were really trying to get it all right and pay proper respects. I still wish the future flight attendant was dressed in rambo gear! the model was beautiful as well! you can check out more of my work at www.makeupwithme.com.
enjoy the read

A lively, colorful survey will interest any who fly........2006-12-11
In the 1930s the first stewardesses were registered nurses who not only escorted passengers but repaired loose chairs, loaded baggage, and carried a railroad timetable to help passenger planning! By the 1950s they were bartenders and waitresses, and today they are limited enforcers of regulations. COME FLY WITH US! A GLOBAL HISTORY OF THE AIRLINE HOSTESS pairs vintage color photos with ads and colorful insights on the changing role, culture and appearance of airline a stewardesses around the world. A lively, colorful survey will interest any who fly.

An enjoyable, quick read and very enlightening! A very well written history of flight attendents with awesome photographs!.......2006-09-25
This book really opened my eyes to the way female flight attendants (and, much more recently, male flight attendants) have been treated, used and promoted by the airline industry. This review may seem like I'm giving away the entire story told in this book; but there's so much additional information that you'll read in this book that this review is really just an appetizer! I honestly found this book to be completely gripping and very well presented. I couldn't put it down once I started reading it! SMILES
The book starts with stories and photos of the first flight attendants. Of all things, these women were nurses enabled to assist jittery customers on board the aircraft. In the very early days of commercial flight, airline flight attendants were expected to do everything from serve a meal to touch up the paint job of the airplane during stopovers! The book uses a very well written text supplemented by countless photographs and advertisement reproductions to demonstrate how airlines used flight attendants to lure customers and make money. It's sad that over the course of history the airline industry imposed such rules as forbidding airline attendants to become married while working for the airlines. In later years, female stewardesses were taken advantage of by airlines who forced them to wear skimpy paper dresses to attract male customers.
On the other hand, it was great to read about flight attendants becoming more empowered by government as the decades passed.
Again, a very strong point about this book is the terrific photos of flight attendants and the faithful reproductions of advertisements used by the airlines to increase business. These are fascinating to look at and enjoy over and over again.
Overall, this is an excellent account of what went on "behind the scenes" at airline companies as they employed flight attendants throughout the decades. The last chapter of the book discusses in brief where the role of the flight attendant is going as airlines get larger airplanes and face new challenges in a post-September 11 world.
Kudos to Johanna Omelia and Michael Waldock for providing us with a great account of the history of the airline hostess and host! I highly recommend this book for persons who are interested in not just the history of flight but how people's lives were changed by the airline industry as well. This book is a great read and the photos will "wow" you! SMILES
A real gem!.......2004-08-24
What a book! Covers many airlines throughout the world...good old australia even included in this book.
If you are/were a hostess this book will will brighten your day.Look back through the years as the airline hostess's evolved.
A high quality book, beautiful photos printed on glossy paper make this book a gem.Not a coffee table book but a book you can be proud of.Great value.Very few books will match the quality of this book and,for the price.
Will love this if interested in the history of the airlines.......2003-11-30
This very nice coffee table book is wonderful and is a MUST HAVE for anyone who has been in the airline industry for any period of time or for those just interested in the history of the airlines. The pictures and the old ads, particularly the really vintage ones, are so interesting and will be reminders to many of what is unfortunately a bygone era of luxury airline travel. Interesting notes, such as the Continental Hostess Manual's in-flight wartime regulations, imposed by the Government after Pearl Harbor, are somewhat eerily prophetic to the security regulations Flight Attendants of today must follow. I have bought this book for a number of friends and highly recommend it. One sour note, is the fact that in a few pictures the authors have chosen to use some current-day very sexy models in some posed, low-cut, not actual fashions/uniforms for whatever reason??

Book Description
Global Airlines: Competition in a Transnational Industry presents an overview of the changing scene in air transport covering current issues such as security, no frills airlines, open skies agreements, the outcome of the recent downturn in economic activity and the emergence of transnational airlines, and takes a forward looking view of these challenges for the industry.
Since the publication of the second edition in 1999 major changes have occurred in the industry. The rules of the game in air transport are now beginning to change; and it is time to take the story forward. This third edition contains nine new chapters and tackles the following issues amongst others:
* Security: The tragic events of 11 September 2001, followed by the war in Iraq, and the resultant heightened tensions over security and passenger safety.
* Financial instability: the cyclical downturn in economic activity has led some airlines to the verge of bankruptcy. Even some large well-established carriers are not immune from this. How can the industry look to survive?
* Attaining global reach: implications of transborder mergers, open skies agreements and the transatlantic Common Aviation area. Can full globalisation ever be reached?
* Low-cost carriers and e-commerce: as both increase, how much the industry re-structure and deal with issues associated with increased passenger traffic and decreased labour requirements?
* Airport capacity: Air traffic is estimated to grow at a long-term average annual rate of 5 per cent per annum. But many airports in many parts of the world are already reaching their capacity limits. How can this be overcome and are the environmental implications?
Using up to date data and case studies from major international airlines such as United Airlines, British Airways, and Qantas amongst many others, Global Airlines provides a comprehensive insight into todays global airline industry.
* Addresses the critical issues in the development of the airline industry and considers options for airline strategies and government policies
* Updated to reflect recent developments including security issues, no frills airlines, open skies' agreements and the recent downturn in economic activity, and what this means for the future of the industry.
* Facts and theories are interwoven throughout the text
Customer Reviews:
excellent, informative, explains competition well.......2007-04-09
After reading about 1/3rd of the book: well-written overview of competition in the airline industry with a lot of good detail, for example on airline customer loyalty strategies like frequent flyer programs, agency discounts, corporate discounts. Explains the economic theory in context. My only complaint is that a lot of charts with mind-numbing numbers in them would be more usefully presented as graphs rather than numeric tables.

Welcome tho the avaition industry..........2007-03-08
This book introduce the commercial aviation industry, its characteristics regarding operational, finnancial, and global aspects. Very useful for economic and marketing students.
Great CRS/GDS related information....fine overview.......1998-05-13
I find Global Airlines a 'must' for anybody entering the airline industry. Especially the information given on the various CRS's is a fine tool to help understand why the CRS/GDS world came to be the way it is and why it simply has to change and where it probaly will change to be in the future. I bought this book in 1996 and it is still a great tool in 1998!

Good case-study book.......2003-01-17
Peter Cappelli provides a case-study analysis of airline labor in this book. The material is historically relevant and is a good snapshot of labor from multiple perspectives. Unfortunately, the book is not a stand-alone. Readers unfamiliar with airline labor will need a primer before reading this book. The book also does not account for the recent sweeping changes in the airline industry. Despite its shortcomings, this work is a good compliment for collegiate studies in human resources, aviation, and labor unions.

Customer Reviews:
A Bit Florid.......2005-11-01
Very positive, abstract, and florid.
Helpful points.
It sounds good. But will it be followed?
This book could have provided specific examples and real-life situations.
Still worth having, however.
Insightful!.......2004-03-01
Jack Welch, the former chairman of General Electric, is still a heroic managerial figure to many businesspeople, and his wisdom has found its way into the book market in many and various ways. Of course, numerous books are available about Six Sigma, the managerial philosophy that Welch made famous. But Six Sigma was only part of Welch's legacy. In this slim guide to the counsel of the man who earned the sobering sobriquet "Neutron Jack," author Jeffrey Krames summarizes Welch's philosophy in 24 leadership principles, followed by brief notes and exercises for training managers. We recommend this admiring condensation of Jack Welch's managerial strategies as an introductory summary which may whet your appetite for a deeper look at Welch's distinctive take on corporate leadership
The Welch Way.......2004-01-31
Talk about a quick read! This really shouldn't be a book -- it should be a magazine article. The book does provide some valuable insight on how to successfully run an organization, but as short as the book is, it can be somewhat repetitious. Although this is probably a valuable tool and its simplicity can be a virtue, it is too brief to qualify as a bona book. It can easily be read in about 10 minutes.
A Handy Handbook on Welch.......2003-03-12
The Welch Way authored by Jeffrey Krames is a real handy employee handbook for enhancing corporate performance. I found the book educative and entertaining with easy to use and easy to apply lessons to work life. This short book is different in the sense that it offers profound information and value in the form of 24 lessons from the wisdom of the world's greatest business leader, Jack Welch. No wonder The Business Week aptly describes Welch as 'The Gold standard against which other CEOs are measured'. During his tenure he transformed GE into the global benchmark for corporate leadership, maximizing productivity and labor efficiency.
The lessons offer insights into the aspects - Lead Vs Manage, importance of being informal, keep it simple, face reality, embrace change as an opportunity, challenge tradition, fight bureacracy, respect intellect and values, live speed, instill confidence, articulate vision and have fun etc.
The three most important points to pick up are - simplicity, speed and self-confidence.
It is learnt that on the foundations of boundarylessness Welch constructed his learning organisation. The declaration of Welch that 'Six sigma is the most important thing we've ever had - it is better than going to Harvard Business School' is interesting.
Further his 4E's of leadership - Energy, Energize, Edge and Execution inspire any leader. He says speed is everything which keeps business and people young. He declares that Business is about passion, winning, creating new things. Business is about ideas and fun and excitement and celebrations - a superlative perspective indeed !
Jeffrey Krames, Publisher of McGraw-Hill's business books has given a wonderful gist of what Jack Welch has to offer to the corporate world. The book is crisp in rendition and short. An ideal refresher and a handy handbook for all employees.
A must read to reflect and share the wisdom with colleagues.
Fast, Easy, Powerful Reading.......2002-06-27
Jeffrey Krames' book allows you to gulp in quickly the easy to apply and often powerful bite-size success strategies of Jack Welch. This book is the perfect buy for any manager who wants a condensed version of the Welch Way, with an opportunity to apply the lessons learned on a personal level. Great job!
