Book Description
Easy to start-up and useeven for readers with no computer experiencethis Windows based strategic management simulation turns individuals into teams with the responsibility of running a regional airline. By analyzing a company's history, financial reports, and other information provided, the teams make decisions concerning hiring, forecasting, suppliers to use, costs, etc. Teams are challenged to establish objectives, plan the strategy to accomplish those objectives, and then operate the airline on a quarter-by-quarter basis. Each team's decisions are input into a computer which acts as the flying public and assigns sales to each firm based on the decisions each has made. Team members are shown how to keep adequate records, analyze happenings and develop relationships, effectively organize the team, and delegate the work. For use by various organizations promoting team building, strategic management, and marketing strategy.
Customer Reviews:
Good simulation. Some research required........2007-04-15
This is an integrative simulation: one must make decisions in all of the areas of running a business. Although the context is the airline industry, most, if not all, of the generic decisions one must make in business are contained. For example, decisions must be made in the areas of price, promotion, training and dividends.
I use this simulation in some of my upper level business classes. Since it is a strategic simulation, you need some prior knowledge of the different functional areas to make wise decisions. If you do not possess this prior knowledge, then you need the willingness to do some research in your areas of weakness.
Many of my students find this to be one of the highlights of the class. Some, however, do struggle with it. If one keeps an attitude of learning as the ultimate goal, and stays motivated towards that goal, then this simulation can be a positive learning experience. The simulation can and will probably require serious thought and effort.
Have The Antacid Standing By.......2003-11-08
This is one of the least pleasant learning experiences I have ever been through. I used this book and associated software (which you must download) in a graduate Aviation Route Planning class, and this book takes every opportunity to disappoint.
Understand that this is a simulation guide and you must use the simulation as part of a registered class. As for faults, there are many. The most glaring error is the almost total absence of information related to selections you must make from the very beginning. There is essentially no discussion of pros and cons of various options presented, therefore if any of the information is not completely understood prior to beginning the class (which obviously defeats the purpose of the class) errors can be made which can prove disastrous for the remainder of the simulation. Only my long history in the industry assisted me in making reasonable choices in the numerous gray areas.
If you insist on taking a class that uses this simulation, buy a comprehensive airline management text and read it prior to starting the class (perhaps the books by Douganis would be most helpful). Don't even think about buying this for personal use; you will get nothing from it.
As an aside, the software is extremely buggy (for myself and many others in my class), so be prepared to enter all decisions multiple times, have data disappear, never be able to find your information, etc.
All in all this is without peer in the truly horrible textbook category. If you can take an equivalent course based on case studies, or for that matter ANY other text, by all means do so. I was obviously very disappointed by this book (and software): it sounded like a good idea at the time, and I genuinely thought it could prove of value to my knowledge of the materiel; instead all I got was indigestion.
New 4th Edition...on it's way.......2001-01-11
Stay tuned folks, the new and improved 4th edition is scheduled for publication during the third quarter of this year!
Where's the rest of the simulation? It's important!.......2000-05-11
The manager or student who does not have the assistance of an 'airline-experienced' professor, the computer software and the additional training material makes this simulation process much more difficult to comprehend, understand and complete. If the publisher and the writer would include the extra material plus the computer software, this could be a great training tool for many airline managers and others.
If you must buy this simulation in its present form, consider purchasing Paul Dempsey's book: Airline Management to get through this.
One of the top business strategy simulations.......1999-09-28
Used worldwide, this is one of the best selling simulations for use in senior level business strategy, global strategy, marketing management, services marketing/management, airline management and tourism managment courses. The book that is listed is the STUDENT MANUAL for the course. The instructor will have the software for the simulation. This is not a stand-alone product but must be administered by the instructor in the course. This book would be the same book as purchased in the college bookstore.

Book Description
Harvesting the Dream is the rare story of a large and successful business that remains family owned and continues to operate on the basis of professional and personal integrity. You’ll follow the Trinchero family from their common origins in a New York flooded with immigrant families like themselves, to their uncommon rise to success, to the present business challenges they face in the new Napa Valley. Their story brings the American dream to life–and underscores the reality that hard work and the willingness to defy well-rooted conventions are still the building blocks of business success.
Download Description
The true story of an immigrant family's rise to prominence and the brand that rewrote the rules of wine
Harvesting the Dream tells the inspirational story of the Trinchero family and its Sutter Home winery, now among America's largest and most successful vintners. More than just a business success story, it's also the tale of an immigrant family's half-century journey to achieve the American Dream. Against all odds, Sutter Home's light and sweet White Zinfandel became America's bestselling wine and a staple at tables across the country.
Harvesting the Dream uses the Sutter Home story to teach profound business lessons about the importance of calculated risk and creative thinking.
Kate Heyhoe (Cherry Valley, CA) is an award-winning online editor, author, and cofounder of the Web's first food and cooking ezine, Global Gourmet (globalgourmet.com).
Stanley Hock (Albany, CA) is a California wine industry marketing and public relations consultant who, for 13 years, was Communications Director for Trinchero Family Estates, owner of the Sutter Home, Montevina, and Trinchero wineries.

California's Wine History.......2004-03-02
HARVESTING THE DREAM:
The Rags-To-Riches Tale Of The
Sutter Home Winery:
By Kate Heyhoe and Stanley Hock
Kate Heyhoe and Stanley Hock have cooperated on a timely rags-to-riches story, one which pays tribute to hardship, hard work and unqualified success. "Genuine, generous, and humble, the Trincheros stand out in glitzy Napa Valley for their philanthropy, world-class employee programs, and long-term community involvement," says publisher John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
The Sutter Home Trinchero family migrated from Italy to New York city for the usual reasons not long after World War II. Little did they realize their reasons for success would take them to far-away California, a continent away. They arrived in the late 1940s and ploughed their fate into the long-dormant Sutter Home winery. They would restore it, and they had the grit and determination to bring it to fruition. At one period it meant living in an unheated motel cabin with outdoor facilities.
By the 1950s the family was producing 52 different wines. Their success was based on strong family discipline, a certain amount of risk-taking and the "fortuitous accident" leading to their creation of the first White Zinfandel, thus the Part II of the book entitled, "Eureka! Liquid Gold and the Blush Rush."
Historians and students will appreciate the seven-page index to this viticultural account of California's colorful past.
Kate Heyhoe is an important pioneer in the field of food. On line since 1994, her earliest Electronic Gourmet Guide gave way to her current Global Gourmet site, (www.GlobalGourmet.com). Her newest books, besides, Harvesting the Dream, are A Chicken in Every Pot, a study of international chicken dishes and Macho Nachos, a worldly look at chip adornment and entertainment fun. She is also author of Cooking with Kids For Dummies.
Stanley Hock is former communications director for the Trinchero Family in Napa Valley. In a 25-year career in California's wine industry, thirteen of these years were spent as director of communications for the Sutter Home Winery. Hock also collaborated with James McNair in the compilation of the Sutter Home Napa Valley Cookbook.

Book Description
Information systems in tourism, such as computer reservation systems, yield management systems, and tourism-marketing systems, have been among the pioneers of leading-edge technology applications and have driven the dynamics of development in tourism services. Tourism is regarded as one of the most successful applications of electronic commerce. The book is synthesizing and analyzing the current situation, trying to set the stage and to show ways of future research. A common methodological approach and framework enables the analysis of the ongoing processes and the underlying trends. From both a technological and a managemental point of view, the work focuses on interorganizational processes and information systems, it takes a network-oriented approach, corresponding with the fact that travel and tourism is an interorganizational business. In order to provide a coherent picture, the work is located within a triangle of tourism research, information technology and computer science, and management science. With respect to these scientific fields, different perspectives are pursued and integrated: • a market and industry perspective, looking at trends in the tourism industry, • an analysis of the value chain and its redesign induced by modern information and communications technologies, • a discussion of organizational impacts and the implications on management strategies, focusing on a business (network) redesign. Several case studies illustrate the strategies of different players in the industry, highlight structural changes, and indicate future trends. Extensive references provide a comprehensive coverage of the literature in tourism information systems.
Customer Reviews:
A Solid Effort!.......2003-01-09
Information technology (IT) fits the tourism industry like those three-fingered white gloves fit Mickey Mouse - but you have to really understand what you are doing if you want to hang out with the big thinkers. Just ask authors and researchers Hannes Werthner and Stefan Klein, specialists on IT applications for the tourism trade. They teach a complex class, here, about getting destination and attraction information to travelers and about getting tourism data back to service providers. This IT theme park is a place where insiders give the professional scoop to other insiders. The language is highly technical, theoretical and complex (perhaps, now and then, even more complex than the ideas at hand warrant). Casual visitors will like the extensive source documentation, charts, graphs and arrow-filled diagrams, but the text is written for folks who live in this industry day in and day out. If you already know info technology and tourism, we from getAbstract invite you to enjoy this expert rundown on how all the internal mysteries relate. There's nothing Mickey Mouse about it.
Professor.......2001-06-04
This is an excellent book providing a comprehensive look at information technology in the tourism industry. The perspective of the authors is clearly IT. I would strongly recommend this book as a reader for senior level undergraduate and graduate level classes in this area. The authors should be commended for providing the first comprehensive look at the tourism industry.
Rubbish.......2001-04-20
This book is rubbish! It is nothing more than a very long and pedantic list of topics. There is no explanation of anything.
The english is also near comical.
The only saving grace is the extensive list of references for which it earns 1 star.

Book Description
With the trend toward an increasingly global economy, strategic planning is an active area of research. However, little attention has been paid to strategic planning in hospitality and tourism. This book fills the gap. It demonstrates, using international examples and detailed case studies, how the concepts, tools, and techniques of the strategic planning process can be applied to hospitality and tourism management. It examines the entire process at both the corporate and strategic business unit level and contains the latest empirical research, integrating theory with practice. The authors also discuss two diagnostic tools they have developed to measure efficiency, the strategic planning index (SPI) and the marketing planning index (MPI).

Book Description
Following on the heels of his national bestseller A Treasury of Royal Scandals, Michael Farquhar turns his attention to matters a little closer to home with A Treasury of Great American Scandals. From the unhappy family relationships of prominent Americans to the feuds, smear campaigns, duels, and infamous sex scandals that have punctuated our history, we see our founding fathers and other American heroes in the course of their all-too-human events. Ineffectual presidents, lazy generals, traitors; treacherous fathers, nagging mothers, ungrateful children, embarrassing siblings; and stories about insanity, death, and disturbing postmortems are all here, as are disagreeable marriages, vile habits, and, of course, sex: good sex, bad sex, and good-bad sex too. We can take comfort in the fact that we are no worse and no better than our forebears. But we do have better media coverage. Bonus educational material:
* A brief history of the United States, including scandals!
* The American Hall of Shame!
* A complete listing of presidential administrations!
Customer Reviews:
AMERICA'S DIRTY LAUNDRY!.......2007-09-19
This book was hysterical. It exposed some of our most revered historical heros as the plain, living men they really were. Not perfect, but just like us. Only sometimes they liked to duel with each other to death. I don't think that would fly today.
Now I want to read his book on Royal scandals!
Interesting and informative........2007-09-15
For everyone who's a history fan but doesn't necessarily like long and dry historical accounts, check this book out. It offers bits of history with lots of detail (and some wit) but not in a long format. And there's a large variety of people that are covered: politicians, explorers, presidents, lovers of politicians, and so on. I have all the books by Mr. Farquhar and enjoy reading them again and again. Something to read at the beach, on the subway, at any lull in one's day. It'll add to your knowledge of American history. Fun.
A great read for short attention spans.......2006-10-23
Some of the scandals in the book aren't exactly scandals by today's standards or are so well known we regard them as hardly shocking. And indeed, some stories we already knew.
But the lay out of the book is in such a way that it provides an ease with reading. A book with short stories on scandals is always a fun read. I'm often traveling on public transportation and find that it's nice to read when I have the chance, but find it frustrating to leave a good story in the middle of the tale because I've arrived at my destination or the break isn't long enough to finish the chapter. But this book, and the others this author has written, is set up so that leaving in the middle of a chapter doesn't happen that often. Plus, you can flip through and pick a topic at will.
I really enjoyed this book, and have read his other two books and ejoyed them as well. I recommend it.
A sense of humor is required.......2006-10-20
There seems to be a side of Americans that they do not want to believe the mud being slung at every election since it's birth. The message is not so much how horrible some of the icons of our history have been but how there really is nothing new under the sun. They were as human and as prone to use their power for selfish purposes as any modern day leader. Mr. Farquhar tastefully avoids recent history in an attempt to remain objective and not bring in the emotionally charged scandals of our own day. The stories he tells can garner a chuckle now because they are all relatively distanct memories to us at the most. If you would prefer to keep your heros on pedastals, you probably want to avoid this book. Some of the stories leave a lot to interpretation in determining if it was true or if Mr. Farquhar is telling only parts of the story that make it seem true - those you will have to judge on your own. For the most part though, Mr. Farquhar appears to offer dissenting opinion on matters and avoids pronouncing historic dogma. Most of the stories are rather petty familial disputes unrelated to matters of real corruption in government and such. Perhaps avoiding the more weightier matters of government is best in a light-hearted treatment of history like this one. The serious matters are perhaps better served in a serious history. Like it or not, this book is purely for a light-hearted escape at the expense of a few public families in our past.
Great Vignettes.......2006-10-08
This is a great book for people who are looking for a fast, humorous read about some follibles of the USA's former statesmen and founders. It provides salacious details not usually found in plodding history books.

Great Source for One-Liners.......2004-04-05
This book is a great source for humor.
Jacob Braude was a Judge of the Circuit Court in Cook County, Illinois for more than 35 years. During that time, he gained a reputation for his reservoir of anecdotes and humorous stories.
The book is divided into topics and the material is easily adaptable. I particularly like the definitions, which I find are a great source for humorous one-liners.

Reprinting of an old classic........2006-04-13
Prior to 1960, the availability of books regarding the Civil War was a fraction of what it is today. Extraordinary storytellers such as Shelby Foote were not yet on the scene and Hollywood had not yet glamorized the war in such glorious fashion with epic movies and 10-part mini-series'. What I'm getting at is, in 1960, when B. A. Botkin first released his book, A CIVIL WAR TREASURY OF TALES, LEGENDS AND FOLKLORE, he set a new standard in Civil War narration.
This 2006 edition is a reprinting of the original save for the addition of new artwork by Warren Chappell, who replaced Stephen Cushman as illustrator in the last reprinting. The stories are the same, so if you're looking for new material, you won't find it, but if you've never read Botkin's compilation of letters in this classic work, you don't want to miss it.
Botkin presents over 500 pages of letters, many originals, written by either those who took part directly in the events or who witnessed them firsthand. This is the Civil War without the sugar coating, and without the glamorizing. Some of what you read will make you laugh, some will turn your stomach. Your heart will be ripped apart as you only try to imagine the anguish of Sergeant Driscoll who shot a Confederate Officer in an ambush only to discover a few minutes later that it was in fact, his own son who had gone south before the war. You will feel the devotion of the two soldiers found sleeping next to Jackson's statue after the war, "just to sleep with the old man once more".
There are a few accounts of major battles, and a few profiles of individual leaders, but for the most part, this is a collection of stories about skirmishes, many of which you may never have heard of, and about individuals and their happenings during the war. In all, there are six chapters here, one for each year of the war, as well as a brief closing chapter regarding the aftermath. This is followed by an extraordinary collection of over 30 pages of notes, however, sadly, most of the books referenced here are long out of print and nearly impossible to locate.
Botkin, himself a professor of history, compiled over a dozen volumes of folklore. I believe this was his best compilation. An outstanding study guide with great merit for students, this is the Civil War as told by those who lived it.

Book Description
Celebrating more than two centuries of the American presidency, A Treasury of White House Tales offers fifty-seven little-known stories about presidents from George Washington to Bill Clinton. A fascinating look at the world's most powerful men. Illustrated and indexed.
Customer Reviews:
Fun book!.......2004-04-02
This is a great book for reading in those spare moments. For me, it was not the sort of book I'd read in one or two sittings -- just a chapter here and a chapter there while waiting in a doctor's office, or sitting at the Barber shop, or reading a quick chapter before bed.
It is not intellectually challenging -- it's not meant to be. It is an enjoyable, easy to read book that is filled with interesting, little-known facts.

Book treasures.......2007-01-11
This book IS a treasure, especially if you have a sense of humor and like to laugh. If you have a sour attitude, do not buy this book.
Book Description
In A Treasury of Civil War Tales, you'll discover things like: What Union general was showered with 10,000 gift cigars following the unconditional surrender of Fort Donelson, Tennessee, how a Boston banking heiress wrote the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" following a tour of war-torn Washington, and what former Ohio congressman was deported from the United States to the Confederacy for advocating peace and reconciliation with the South.
Garrison presents the Civil War with a human face in a collection of stories that capture what the war was like for the people who lived through it. There are fifty-two chronologically arranged stories about Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, Dred Scott's legal battle with slavery, and much more.
Read this timeless documentary. It'll open your eyes to the mysteries beneath the Civil War.

this could have been at least 4 stars.......2003-12-25
I have read about 4 of Webb Garison's Civil War books and though all have been god except for Friendly Fire they are all basically the same. This is a good book and yes it might have 1 or 2 stories the other books didn't but you can only read the same story in the same format som many times and Garrison repackaged these stories to death. He is a good author though and I do recomend reading most of his books but be warned that they are very similar
Easy to read history.......2003-09-24
Although the title implies that this might be a collection of short stories, it is more a series of chapters describing historical events. Written in a journalistic style that would hold your interest in a magazine, this book is not fiction but history that is slightly colored by the author's opinions. (Perhaps the word "tales" is used to avoid an obligation to be totally objective.) Still, the chapters are short and entertaining. You can finish a chapter and come back to the book a month later if you want because the chapters are independent of each other.
You will meet a wide range of characters in this book, from Harriet Beecher Stowe to Jubal Early and Abe Lincoln. Political background is covered without sounding dry, and some of the incidental stories (such as the background of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic") are quite fascinating. Garrison ends the book with some criticism of Abe Lincoln, who he felt prolonged the war. Notes about the author state that he lives in North Carolina.
My copy was published in 1990.
Book Description
Texas and Texans have been known to boast of having the best or the worst, the most or the least, the largest or the tiniest of just about everything. Join author Bill Cannon as he reveals facts that depict the colorful bravado unique to the Lone Star State. For instance, not six but seven flags flew over Texas. In 1832 the composer of The Star Spangled Banner, Francis Scott Key, was the counsel hired by Sam Houston to defend him on assault charges. And someone other than Sam Bass may be buried in his grave. A Treasury of Texas Trivia is complemented by newspaper accounts, photographs, and other documentation of these and other little-known bits of Texas history.
