    Description:
Overlaps in form and meaning between morphologically related words have led to ambiguities in interpreting priming effects in studies of lexical organization. In Semitic languages like Arabic, however, linguistic analysis proposes that one of the three component morphemes of a surface word is the CV-Skeleton, an abstract prosodic unit coding the phonological shape of the surface word and its primary syntactic function, which has no surface phonetic content (McCarthy, J. J. (1981). A prosodic theory of non-concatenative morphology, Linguistic Inquiry, 12 373-418). The other two morphemes are proposed to be the vocalic melody, which conveys additional syntactic information, and the root, which defines meaning. In three experiments using masked, cross-modal, and auditory-auditory priming we examined the role of the vocalic melody and the CV-Skeleton as potential morphemic units in the processing and representation of Arabic words. Prime/target pairs sharing the vocalic melody but not the CV-Skeleton consistently failed to prime. In contrast, word pairs sharing only the CV-Skeleton primed reliably throughout, with the amount of priming being as large as that observed between word pattern pairs sharing both vocalic melody and CV-Skeleton. Priming between morphologically related words can be observed when there is no overlap either in meaning or in surface phonetic form.

      Description:
The role of segment similarity in early (i.e., partially learned) lexical entries was assessed using artificial lexicons in a referential context. During a learning phase participants heard 40 nonsense words, each accompanied by an unfamiliar picture. In testing, participants heard the direction ''Click on the [X]'', and chose which of four pictures was the target (X). Target lexical items (e.g., pibo) appeared with foils that were similar: cohort items (pibu), rhymes (dibo), matched consonants (pabu) or matched vowels (diko). Two initial experiments demonstrated cohort and rhyme confusions, similar to lexical activation findings. Four further experiments explored the role of segment similarity in word confusions. Consonant-matched CVCV stimuli were more strongly confused with each other than were vowel-matched CVCV stimuli. Placing consonants in syllable-final position (VC[f]VC) weakened consonant effects and strengthened vowel effects. These results suggest that syllable-initial segments play a strong role in word similarity and constrain the organization of new lexical items.

        Description:
This paper argues against analyzing grammatical category as a morphological epiphenomenon irrelevant for syntax. Using evidence from English and Greek it refutes the account in Barner and Bale [Lingua 112 (2002), 771], whereby coinages are derivations of the free syntactic insertion of roots in nominal and verbal environments, and presents evidence suggesting they are products of meta-linguistic processes. Rehearsing the discussion in Chomsky's Remarks on Nominalization [Readings in English Transformational Grammar (1970) 184], the paper goes on to show that seeking to syntactically derive nouns and verbs from roots stumbles upon the idiosyncratic differences many noun-verb pairs display between them. Towards this, it foregrounds the role of non-zero derivational morphology in Greek and Hungarian.

            Description:
An essential aspect of knowing language is knowing the words of that language. This knowledge is usually thought to reside in the mental lexicon, a kind of dictionary that contains information regarding a word's meaning, pronunciation, syntactic characteristics, and so on. In this article, a very different view is presented. In this view, words are understood as stimuli that operate directly on mental states. The phonological, syntactic and semantic properties of a word are revealed by the effects it has on those states.

                Description:
This paper describes the architecture and the implementation of a full-scale pronunciation lexicon for Turkish using finite state technology. The system produces at its output, a parallel representation of the pronunciation and the morphological analysis of the word form so that further disambiguation processes can be used to disambiguate pronunciation. The pronunciation representation is based on the SAMPA standard and also encodes the position of the primary stress. The computation of the position of the primary stress depends on an interplay of any exceptional stress in root words and stress properties of certain morphemes, and requires that a full morphological analysis be done. The system has been implemented using XRCE Finite State Toolkit.

                      Description:
Verb production is notoriously difficult for individuals with Broca's aphasia, both at the word and at the sentence level. An intriguing question is at which level in the speech production these problems arise. The aim of the present study is to identify the functional locus of the impairment that results in verb production deficits in Broca's aphasia. Levelt's (1989) model is used as a theoretical framework for this study. Two experiments have been conducted, one on verb movement and one on verbs with alternating transitivity. The results suggest that the functional impairment in Broca's aphasia should be located in Levelt's ''grammatical encoder.''

                      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good basics, but needs updating.......2000-07-20

This book does a good job covering the many basics of making an effective presentation, including dealing with anxiety, personal appearance, planning and preparation. However, it needs to be updated to reflect the many changes in presentation technology (and technology in general) since 1993 that are available to the presenter.

For example, to quote from page 55, "CD-ROM Players--These 'read only' players (you can't record onto them from your own computer, yet!) can hold a gigantic amount of information. Some disks contain an entire encyclopedia. These devices can store color photographs, video clips, sound clips, huge data bases and other types of information that require a lot of memory. There is new technology available that will allow you to take a photograph, have it transferred to a CD-ROM disk and then bring it up on your computer screen." What next, phones without wires? Overall a good book on the subject of preparing for and delivering presentations as long as you're not looking for any tips on PowerPoint or technology-based presentations.

4 out of 5 stars Concise and to the point, good for a beginner.......1999-03-02

I would say if you never put a presentation together, or looking for few ideas in putting a presentation together, this book is for you. The material is concise and gives good backgound on how to put a professional presentation together. I recommend it to a beginning managers and executives that want to evalute their presentation mode.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent instructional reference.......2000-10-19

Loud and Clear is an outstanding resource for producing an effective presentation. The emphasis on audience analysis, which is so often overlooked, is excellent and will lead you to focus on the things that matter for your presentation. I especially liked the exercises suggested by the authors. Do them; you will learn more about your style of communication and your ability to connect with audiences than you had ever imagined. This book is probably most effective for newer presenters who need a foundation in the building blocks of assembling an effective presentation. But, it will also be instructional and valuable to check the effectiveness of more experienced presenters. Overall Loud and Clear is a concise, well-written recipe for effective presentations

5 out of 5 stars The Handbook of Successful Meetings.......2006-12-06

Marion E. Haynes has written a book with a good grounding in planning, organizing and running effective meetings. Although the book is brief, it is packed with what it takes to plan, execute and manage productive meetings. The author highlights the critical role of the meeting leader to ensure that a meeting progresses to its stated goals, ensure that all participants make their contributions, moderate conflicts, deal with disruptive and inattentive participants, summarize action items and closing a meeting on an upbeat and positive note.

This is a well written book that is written in plain English and that is easy to follow and understand. Readers will learn, among other things, the importance of having clear agendas which states the purpose of the meeting, starting and ending meetings on time, problem solving, stimulating participation and discussion and writing the record of the meeting, following up on action items and evaluating meeting effectiveness.

The book is an important reference guide that is well worth reading.

The book boiled down the basic skills and walked through how they should be implemented. I made a generic guide for myself and the quality of my meetings improved dramatically.

Nice, short, concise format for managers. Gets to the point with some meaningful tips beyond introductory level, going to addressing meeting problems and meeting follow-up and evaluation. Simple quizes to evaluate your understanding of the books content as you go. Example checklists help you get the meeting right.

                            Book Description

Committees. Seemingly endless, boring discussions going nowhere. No university survives without them, and no faculty member can avoid them. Why are there such a plethora of committees in the university? What functions do they serve? And how can you, as a committee member or chair, ensure that the work gets done quickly and effectively with a minimum of conflict, boredom, or wasted time? Author Neil J. Smelser has incorporated decades of experience on a myriad of committees from the local level up to national policy advisory groups into this book. He skillfully demystifies committees and explains how to get on certain committees and avoid others, how to get the committee work done as efficiently as possible, how to ensure that your views are properly represented in the committee's report, how chairing a committee can help shape its mission and direct its outcome, and how to use committees as a positive factor for your academic career. Smelser's advice will be useful to anyone working in the university setting.
