Great Tips - if you can translate examples with today's equivalent.......2007-07-09
I found this book helpful for those administrative assistants that are new or fairly new to the field. There are great tips for layout if you have had an extended break in working, and ways to present experience (or lack of experience) and still get your foot in the door for an interview. The resumes presented were, in my opinion, elemental, which is why I would recommend this book for those starting out in the administrative field. Also, some of the examples used will obviously need to be tailored to your situation. There are numerous references to typewriters and wpm, stenographers, etc, that date the book, and you will need to swap this out with what you currently do in your job. (While I may not be average, I personally have not touched a typewriter in my work environment for the last 6 years). There were some great before and after examples of resumes.
However, I am an experienced administrative assistant performs the usual travel arrangements, expenses, and calendaring, and I also actively seek out projects to pursue. My goal in purchasing this book was to show the value of those extra projects on my resume. If this is your intent as well, I would not recommend this book. I also bought Resume Magic: Trade Secrets of a Professional Resume Writer at the same time, and have found it to be much more useful in translating my current tasks into marketable skills, as it is much more robust.
The Best!.......2007-07-07
I paid 20 cents for this book online and I can't believe how valuable this book really is. I never realized how poorly my resume was untill I read this book. It has all types of scenarios in it such as resume styles for new grads, career changers, job hoppers, etc.
I followed the styles in this book and have had 3 interview requests already in just 2 weeks! It boggles me that the cheapest book I bought was the biggest return for me!
You will not be disappointed by this book. Yes, it was printed in 1997, but all you have to do is change a few of the words (I think they refer to Word Perfect, just change to Microsoft Office 2003). Fantastic Book!
This book is an excellent tool to use to advance your career.......2001-07-09
This book is excellent! It has really showed me how to make my resume more marketable, and prepare me for a better career. I have passed this book on to my family, and co-workers.
Outstanding Resource.......2000-03-16
Ms. Lefkowitz has produced an outstanding guide that is tailored specifically to administrative people. Other resume books provide the basics, but the formulas and the cookie cutter molds just don't seem to lend themselves to admin careers. Her book is a godsend for professional secretaries. Each of the chapters goes through the steps for translating the myriad of everyday tasks into clear, concise, and impressive bullet items. Her section on writing the qualifications statement is particularly helpful. She breaks it down into parts and shows the reader how to tailor it to each job posting. The examples at the end provide different examples on how to word things as well as ideas for formating and layouts (something that is important for a secretary to demonstrate some talent at doing). Using her instructions and those examples, it's easy to put together a resume that gets results! I've had nothing but compliments (and interviews) after using this book.
the best resume book ever!.......1999-05-14
the book was damn easy to use, and It helped me get the job I was looking for! Id recoment it to anyone who is seriously interested in upgrading their resume writting skills
Book Description
How is a sense of belonging to a political community created? Rogers Smith suggests that Stories of Peoplehood, narratives which include racial, religious, ethnic and cultural elements, serve to make membership of a political group part of an individual's identity. He argues that competition over accounts of a nation's history and culture is thus an important part of political life. Examples from around the world since the 18th century are included. In particular, Smith traces the history of competing conceptions of national identity and citizenship in the United States from the revolution to the present day, showing the tension between liberal and egalitarian ideals, and traditions of racism and chauvinism. Combining theory with rich historical detail, Smith's book is an original and provocative account of how national identity is forged. Rogers M. Smith is the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Smith centers his research on contitutional law, American political thought, and modern legal and political theory, with special interests in questions of citizenship, race, ethnicity and gender. His previous books include, Civic Ideals: Conflicting Visions of Citizenship in U.S. History (Yale, 1997) and Liberalism and American Constitutional Law (Harvard, 1985).

Based on a national study, this book shows how churches can move both new and old members into ministry by implementing effective new members’ classes.

invaluable tool.......2007-03-08
Chuck has done a marvelous piece of work evaluating the processes of successful churches. It is an easy and enjoyable read. Personally used it for a small group discussion and also enjoyed giving it to a friend that is in the process of beginning a church. kudo's Chuck!!!
Excellent -- Loaded WithHelpful Information!.......2006-06-28
This book is THE book to own for a pastor or church leader who needs a resource on new member classes. I've seen several approaches described in various places, but nothing until now that brings the numerous concepts together in one cover. In addition to sound advice in the narrative, there are 15 appendices that offer sample forms and outlines for nearly every step of the new member assimilation process.
Lawless has hit a "home run" here -- for me this title is a keeper!
Insightful and practical.......2005-09-28
I've known Chuck since he was my grader in Thom Rainer's "Introduction to Church Growth" class at Southern Seminary in the Fall of 1995. During my own M.Div. and Ph.D. work, he became more than a grader. Chuck became my friend.
I'm currently serving as chairman of my home church's Long-range Planning Committee. One area in which we've identified a great need for improvement is in our new member orientation and current member commitment and service. I consider it providential that in researching books to aid in our task, I came across Lawless' work on those very subjects. I read "Membership Matters" over two days, taking copious notes in the margins and underlying liberally.
Few books address membership classes and church member assimilation. Thom Rainer's "High Expectations" called churches to ask more from members as a means of increasing church health and commitment. Lawless' book moves a step further by providing a practical guide for church pastors and leaders to design and implement membership classes, not only to better incorporate new members, but also to inspire older, non-serving members to get involved in ministry service.
Buy this book. Digest it. Discuss it. But more importantly, put its suggestions into practice.

Diminished Democracy: From Membership to Management in American Civic Life

Book Description
In recent years, membership has dropped in traditional voluntary associations such as Rotary Clubs, Jaycees, and bowling leagues. At the same time, concern is rising about the growth of paramilitary and hate groups. Scholars have warned that these trends are undermining civic society by creating a dangerous number of isolated, mistrustful individuals and organized, antisocial renegades. In this provocative book, however, Nancy Rosenblum takes a new, less narrowly political approach to the study of groups. And she reaches more optimistic conclusions about the state of civil society.
Rosenblum argues that we should judge associations not only by what they do for civic virtue, but also by what they do for individual members. She shows that groups of all kinds--among them religious groups, corporations, homeowner associations, secret societies, racial and cultural identity groups, prayer groups, and even paramilitary groups--fill deep psychological and moral needs. And she contends that the failure to recognize this has contributed to an alarmist view of their social impact. For example, she argues that, although extremist groups have obvious antisocial aims, they constrain individuals who would be even more dangerous as maladjusted loners. And she examines the rapid growth of small "support groups"--which are usually dismissed as politically irrelevant--and shows that the moral support people find in such places as prayer groups and self-help groups helps to cultivate the social trust some scholars say is disappearing. Rosenblum concludes that, for practical and principled reasons, American democracy should permit expansive freedom of association, illustrating her case with discussion of specific cases in law.
Rosenblum recognizes, however, that freedom has a price. She reminds us that some groups have oppressive and even criminal tendencies, and she explores what liberal democracy should do to ensure that individuals also have freedom within associations and freedom to exit. Throughout, Rosenblum writes eloquently and with a powerful moral voice, drawing on law, practical politics, and psychology to produce an original political theory of the moral uses of pluralism. The book adds remarkable depth and subtlety to one of the leading subjects in contemporary social and political debate.

A thorough treatment of association.......2005-01-18
The Constitutional guarantee of free association has received disappointingly little attention from the academic world. This book and Amy Gutmann's "Freedom of Association" remain the only serious academic works devoted to this fascinating issue. Of the two Gutmann's book is superior, but one is better off reading both books if one wishes to have any meaningful understanding of this issue. Whereas Gutmann's book prefers to grapple with the difficulties and dangers inherent in this much-cherished freedom, "Membership and Morals" deals more directly with the nature of association and the various forms it takes. Rather than survey various issues related to association, Rosenblum writes a unitary work which argues that freedom of association is a necessary and valuable part of society. Though at times she overstates her case and makes association out to be a panacea for nearly everything which ails society, her book is nonetheless not to be taken lightly. She offers many important insights into the ways in which association influences society, and presents a strong case for taking freedom of association more seriously. One should find this book usually convincing and always engaging and well-articulated.

Book Description
The present crisis in the American Catholic Church stems from a two-fold source: lay people are powerless while the bishops are accountable to no one but the pope and the curia. While the number of lay people exercising ministries in the church has grown enormously over the past thirty years (largely due to the shortage of priests), there has been little or no theological reflection till now on the genuine role of the laity. It is only from such reflection that structural reform of the church will come.
The first half of The Liberation of the Laity concentrates on the fortunes of the laity, theologically speaking, between Vatican I (1870) and Vatican II (1962-65). It examines the growth of the "new theology" in France in the 1940s and 1950s and shows how in the work of one of its leading practitioners, Yves Congar, much of the vision of the laity expressed at Vatican II was anticipated.
Seeing the years after the council as decades of missed opportunities to recognize the role of the laity, the book then turns to a series of constructive proposals for the liberation of the laity, and thus the liberation of the church. It discusses the importance of "secularity," the need for a "lay liberation theology," and the centrality of the struggles against global capitalism in the mission of the church. It ends with a chapter envisioning dramatic changes in ministry and governing structures, in which accountability will be central, "servant leaders" will include women and married people, and both ecclesiastical careerism and the College of Cardinals will be history.

Liberation of the Laity.......2006-02-23
Excellent! Helped me understand events leading up to, during and after VII. Best of all it offers realistic hope for the future. First 4 chapt were slow but critical to development of ideas. Last 4 do a great job of "now what?" Lakeland isn't afraid to give honest criticism and praise where each is due. Of special interest is the well-developed discussion on the specifics of the term "lay ministry". Great reading for those interested (especially employed) in ministry.
A Must for Concerned Catholics.......2004-05-06
Paul Lakeland has produced a work which needs to be read by every Catholic concerned with the Roman Catholic Church's current preoccupation with its internal institutional self and thereby missing its mission to the whole world. Lakeland explains historically the development of clergy/laity roles and the need to re-think them in this era when HUMAN solidarity is essential to end any and every kind of poverty of body, mind, or spirit of all humanity. He poses instead the reality of "ministers in the church" and "missionaries to the world". He posits that all who work "ad intra" are there precisely to facilitate the institution's mission "ad extra". He wants an end to anything that sees the mission to the world as second class or second place in the life of the institution.
A helpful introduction suggests which chapters will likely be of most interest and help to the variety of persons for whom the book is intended. His concluding chapter which contains a model for a future organization is invaluable.
The only "weakness" I find in the book is the description of the role that religious could play in this future church. If this book is read in conjunction with Diarmuid O'Murchu's insights into the potential of religious men and women at this present moment in the history of the church and of the world, the reader will have a handbook of action that is unparalleled.
An Excellent Well Researched and Motivating Vision!!.......2004-02-01
Paul Lakeland has provided us with an analysis and vision of what needs to occur within our Church to release the empowering energy and spirit of so many faithful members. He does this in a very balanced way in the spirit of Vatican II and other parts of our religious tradition. He paints a vision of how we can all together bring about a recaptured view of what in means to be a member of our Church. This is a must read for anyone who is frustrated by the current leadership scandal within the Church and is looking for some insight into how can we find a way to bring about a true transformation from within.
