Workplace Communications.......2006-01-04
Having taught technical writing, workplace communications, and business English at three different institutions--community college, four-year institution, and private university--and possessing an earned doctorate with an English minor, I find Searle's textbook user friendly, relevant, and functionally practical for nontraditional students, particularly those seeking applied science associate degrees that are terminal. Each of the 10 chapters relate to written and spoken communicative tasks that are required on the job for most persons employed in skilled and paraprofessional positions. The format of the text is inviting and varied without being cluttered or obtrusive. Every community and technical college should consider this text for nontraditional "technical" or business writing courses.
It sucks.......2005-01-25
This is a terribly written and composed text. No school anywhere should use it.

English the Easy Way by Schachter & Schneiter Williams.......2005-04-28
Sorry authors but this book sucks...excuse the grammar. I really couldn't understand what the other reviewer meant by "answers", but now I do. There is no answer key. I looked everywhere for it. The only way you can get one is from the publisher and if you aren't a teacher, forget about it. If this is the case then why isn't it somewhere in bold so you don't waste $40 and precious time. The lady I spoke with at Thomson-SouthWestern said that they do it this way because they don't want school kids to get the answer key. She never could give me a reason why they offer this book to the mass public. Anyway, the book is well written but if you are not a teacher and need it for reviewing basic English don't waste you dough (money). Now I see why the 2nd reviewer gave such a good review...She/He's a TEACHER! DUH! *Happy Hunting*
Very clear and well-organized.......2004-02-13
I'm using this book to teach an English grammar class, and it has been very helpful. It's easy to follow and logically laid out. I've found it better than a few other English grammar books I've seen. There are plenty of exercises.

An Absolute Must for any person who communicates.......1999-09-17
This authorative book on the vast subject of Business Communication is easy to read and understand. The style of presentation allows enjoyable reading such that my appetite has been whetted for further investigation. The authors have managed to turn a mundane topic into an absorbing subject. Regret that I have only discovered this illustrative book whilst busy completing my Doctorate in Psychology as it would have been useful during my earlier degrees. The publication is applicable to all serious literature students, writers and authors and general business personnel. Well illustrated with actual examples and surprisingly up to date with the newest trends and covers every conceivable aspect about the subject. The publication is interspersed with useful hints and insight. The contents initiate much thought and initiative within the reader's cognitive abilities. So glad I found it. It shall always accompany me where I work and think. Such an item should be part of everyone's library and would make a useful gift. I hope to soon be the proud owner of such myself. Congratulations to the authors on a fine team effort. Please keep it updated. Roy K Els. MSc (Psycho)
Book Description
Lesikar and Flatley's, Basic Business Communication (BBC): Skills for Empowering the Internet Generation, has long been known as a solid introductory business communication book that gets to the writing skills sooner than most other texts and gives students true 'how-to' skills in all areas of business communication. It has solid examples, and is both consumer-and service-oriented. Its strength has also been its use of margin notes, cartoons and photos that relate to the concepts and use of cases. Recent editions have established BBC as truly cutting edge; it was the first text in the market with PowerPoint as part of its package, the first to have an online chapter, and with the 9th Edition is now the first to offer writing tips and templates for PDAs (personal digital assistants).).

How to answer the telephone.......2003-11-20
I guess I'm not a member of the first reviewer's Timm fan club. The sense of humor is an acquired taste. The text might be best for a high school business class but I guess I expected more.
The expert scores again!.......2000-12-06
Dr. Timm has done it again. This book covers all the basics of oral communication-- not just presentations. He talks about conversations, interviews, telephone calls-- things we all do every day. This is a "must read" for every young business person.

Introduction to Student's Federal Career Guide
Why go Federal?
If you're reading this book, you are probably aware that the private industry job market is a jungle. This is especially true for recent graduatestoday, college graduates are more likely than high school dropouts to be unemployed. Having a college degree no longer ensures that you will have the job of your dreams after graduation. In fact, in today's competitive job market you may find yourself in competition with those who have multiple advanced degrees or 5 to 10 years of job experience!
Your choice to pursue a job in government is a smart move. The United States federal government is the largest employer in the U.S. The government employs 2.6 million people in jobs that range from biology to art restoration to law enforcement. In addition, the average federal employee is over 46 years of age, and two of every five are eligible now to retire. Agencies are scrambling to find a new, younger workforce
YOU!
Work in the federal government is often more financially rewarding than work in private industry. The average entry level starting salary in government is $26,000 to $37,000 per year. The government may also offer full benefits: including comprehensive health insurance, 401K with matching funds, 10 paid holidays annually, plus 13 days paid vacation to start! Agencies also have the discretion to pay you a signing bonus or pay your student loan debt. In addition, the federal government often offers more workplace flexibility than corporate America. All of these factors add up to a great opportunity for a successful and rewarding career opportunity for you.

A Great Resource for Federal Job Seekers.......2007-05-09
Let's face it, the federal hiring process can be quite complicated and arduous. Even if you are highly qualified, obtaining a federal job can be extremely difficult if you are unfamiliar with the requirements of the government. As a graduate student of public administration, I was confident that I had suitable knowledge and skills to land a federal position, yet I was intimidated by the federal hiring process. I believe that The Student's Federal Career Guide was instrumental in guiding me through the process. By following the book's suggestions and tailoring my resume to the samples provided in the book, I landed a position with the agency of my choice.
The book is well organized as the chapters cover all the steps from how to locate opportunities to preparing for the interview. Much of the book is devoted purely to students who are seeking current or future employment with the federal government. There are a myriad of suggested resources for exploring student opportunities such as internships and part-time employment. The Student's Federal Career Guide will provide you with invaluable information on obtaining a position with the federal government.
