IMGs are no dummies...........2002-01-25
I wonder if there are any mysteries in getting into residency in the US, as a foreign medical graduate, to warrant a book on the subject.
The facts are as follows: to secure a residency position in the US as an FMG,
1. Get good scores on the USMLE exams. The higher the better. This is the most important factor, overall. Aim to score above 85 in each step, at the first sitting.
2. To get good scores, you need to read the relevant books. Those British books will not be of much help. Get Kaplan's materials, or buy them used on eBay. Or use other similar materials
3. If you can, enrol in an externship program in the US. Three to six months are enough to get you acquainted with the American system.
4. Send in your application as required (through ERAS), and call later to schedule interviews.
5. While preparing for your interview, and depending on your choice of specialty, read through Fred Ferri's "Care of the medical patient" (for internal medicine); it's probably the best book for practical medical care; or "Consultation Psychiatry" (for Psychiatry positions); or any other concise books. The point here is, never go for any of these interviews with an "empty head".
6. Get information about the hospitals (yes, you need this for the interview). You are interested in knowing the methods of interviews (individuals vs panel); specialty of the medical director (she'll most likely gravitate towards her specialty during the interview); what the usual questions are (vary little from year to year--current residents will help you here).
7. Get into residency.
That's it, folks.
starting point.......2001-10-30
I ordered this book as a canadian looking to get information on getting through the red tape to visa's, USMLE's etc. This book is more designed for the noncanadian MD and some of the information seems not to be up to date or entirely clear. The most useful thing i got from this was the addresses of the individuals i could contact to ask questions for myself.
Great information on visas for international MD graduates.......1999-10-19
This book helps you prepare for the legal requirements needed in order to stay in a residency in the US that most of us don't consider until it is too late. It covers not only topics concerning international graduates originally from another country other than the US, but also helps those with speciall situations, like american citizens who graduated abroad or international students who graduated in the United States. It is a definite first step.

Book Description
Doctors in a Strange Land provides an in-depth analysis of rural America's reaction to, and acceptance of, the international medical graduates who have come to live and work in their towns. Leonard Baer's study draws on case studies of two small, rural communities to identify who the immigrant physicians are and investigate how well they have been received. His research findings reveal complex issues of race, gender, religion, and language that are of great significance to the ongoing national debate about the place of immigrant physicians.

Book Description
Since the days of Benjamin Rush, international medical graduates have made an important contribution to American psychiatry as teachers, researchers, and clinicians. However, they routinely face a number of obstacles throughout their careers, including discriminatory licensing requirements, few opportunities to enter good training programs, and inequitable representation in professional societies. Although some excellent scholarly books devoted to psychiatric training in psychiatry exist, most do not mention the specific issues encountered in the training of international medical graduates.
Written and edited by psychiatrists who are international medical graduates themselves, International Medical Graduates in Psychiatry in the United States: Challenges and Opportunities presents an overview of important issues pertinent to the career development and training of this group and makes important suggestions for removing the obstacles they face. This text will be useful to international medical graduates, residency training directors, and hospital administrators.
The book is divided into three subject areas. The first section discusses general adjustment issues, including the difficulties encountered during the process of integration into American society, communication and language problems, and immigration requirements. The second section focuses on training issues and outlines the myths surrounding the postgraduate education of international medical graduates, the sometimes difficult relationship between the ABPN and international medical graduates, and the future of psychiatrists and their relationship to international medical graduates. The third section reviews career planning, including advice on careers in academic and administrative psychiatry, a discussion on how to start a private practice, and an exploration of the relationship among international medical graduates, the American Psychiatric Association, other minorities, and organized medicine.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-01-04
Absolutely must for an IMG, has a lot of stuff starting on how to prepare a good application and also tips on writing personal statement and dos & dont,s for recommendation letters. I found it very useful and would definitely recommend it.
Total Success!!!.......2006-11-15
I bought this book on June/06, just prior the match season started. It totally changed my original plan. I was full of the info that is on the internet, the same that the thousands of applicants use. This book gives you in detail what you have to do in order to outstand from the rest. Focusing on the difficulties that an IMG has while trying to get a residency, set the profile of the SUCESSFUL IMG, and explains you how to become one. I relyed on this book only and obtained 10 invitations out of 30 applications, all from top centers like Johns Hopkins, Cleveland Clinic, or Mayo Clinic. Definitively, the best tool for IMG's.
the best.......2005-10-03
It's a very comprehensive book and the tips it gives are really great and deal with real life. The LORs and interview sections are marvellous. The author has an indeed deep understanding of the successful application process for a residency in the U.S. What might miss from this book: maybe how can IMGs find an observership in the U.S for which he/she wouldn't have to pay, just like it is possible in Europe!
I recommend the book in highest terms to anyone applying for residency.
The best IMG book in the market.......2005-07-24
This is THE book for IMGs. Forget first aid and others. Nobody explains the finer details, the minutae that can enhance your competitiveness better than Anagh Vora. The book is a truly outstanding read and will help the readers in the process of obtaining a US residency.
Best would be to buy it by the 2nd-3rd year of medical college and utilise all the guidelines mentioned. Its 140 pages of information for just IMGs, so very much detailed as to what to do and what not to do.
Buying it will be the best decision in you quest for a US residency.
It's about time!!!.......2005-02-10
I would swear and curse with joy, but I shall hold back!
The author of this book is to be commended on the exemplary structure and layout of this little gold-mine... I was hoping to find this work earlier, and I am only thankful that I have it in my hands right now!!!
Getting to the US, into a top-notched residency programme, while being a foreign medical graduate are all difficult things to combine and accomplish skilfully. It is absolutely wonderful to see a physician who made it, and who made it BIG.
I found this book thoroughly informative, believe it or not, on ALL the major steps required for that arduous process. Most texts offer scarse little tid-bits of already well-known facts that I needed to add MUCH more to. This book does that splendidly.
I particularly enjoyed the Seventy-Thirty rule.
Guys out there looking for more than JUST a book on getting through the hurdles?... this book is for those who want to do it and do it WELL. It's plain, and simple, and easy to read. I recommend it above ANY of the other books on the market. THIS ONE is the ONLY one of it's kind...
Thank you to the author. A tremendously honest piece of work. Congratulations.

Not Good for Introducing the Subject.......2007-10-01
Okay, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not the brightest bulb in the pack, but I'm not really that dim either. I thought I was the only one that didn't understand how they get from the example problems to the end-of-chapter problems until I read several reviews from others who had the same problem.
My instructor keeps telling everyone that has problems in the class, "Wait until you get to Digital Fundamentals - that will really give you trouble." Hmm, I've had DF and earned an A. Yes, I had to study and work hard at it, but at least I was able to understand getting from point A to point D!
At this juncture it is either get out while I can, without a grade penalty, or hope that I can catch up by going thru other books. I have ordered other books, but will be trying this class again next semester. I wish I had known at the beginning of the semester that I would need further texts to fill in the blanks!
Lab Manual.......2007-08-25
Is there a reason that the experiments that are suppose to accompany the 11ed book are based off the 10ed book?
John@home.com.......2003-07-09
First of all, this is the best introductory book I have ever read. Boylestadt does an excellent job of getting to the point on the subjects he talks about. The tools he explains in network theorems are very good for the ones who wish to bone up on their skills. You might want to have some other books that explain the subject a little simpler, but you have to work any way to get at that knowledge level. This is a good class room book where one is in a group and can communicate the thoughts they have leaned from the book.
This book is not about devices such as transistors and diodes but its about how accurately you can analyze the circuit. On top of that every mistake he makes in one edition,he corrects it in another edition. So you can guess that this book is pretty good. You don't necessarily have to have a TI-86,but it makes the work flow pretty easily. You need to know what an integrand sign means but for the most part it is a very readable book.
Boylestadt has books out on devices, too. If it's like this book
you know its very knowledgable.
A student who is using this book for Circuits Analysis.......2002-03-11
Hello to everyone who reads my review of this book. First of all for those of you who will need a TI-86 calculator which this book calls for, dont worry about because doesnt even tell you how to use it for certain applications such as Super Mesh, Method Analysis and so on. I had to go to a student who was in a College Algebra class to learn how to use this calculator for this book! Second my professor shows better examples on solve the problems in the book which the book makes it so confusing. You have to ask the professor to show several examples to learn what the book is covering. I would suggest to professors and the Director/Chairman as a student, look for a book that you can use in the class other than this where students can learn from and not become so confused over the material to where almost every student in the class has to ask the professor several questions about the topic and meet with him one on one. I am speaking for other students by the way. I am also helping the professors also. Get a book that students can learn from instead of a one on one discusssion with the professor. Some thing else other than this book! Thanks for your time reading my review. ~Scott~
Lack of communication, needs more depth in examples........2002-03-04
This book has a very clear, "lack of communication". The book is fine for the basics but the problem exercises do not involve the basics. The author explains problems from the beginning but goes straight to the end with the problem exercises. There needs to be more depth between the examples and the problems. This book is fine for some one who already knows it. But,if you don't and want to get confused and frustrated, then I recommend this book. If you are unfortunate and are forced to use this book, I would look for an outside source for reference. Beware!!! My question to the author is: Why are you keeping the middle a secret. This stuff is not as hard as the author makes it. To sum this up, the author says here is an elementary example now I want you to solve this advanced problem. Students need more examples with more depth. This book may be titled as introductory but it sure is geared for the more advanced. Thanks, but no thanks.
Customer Reviews:
Really bad!.......2007-01-23
This text book is absolutely horrible. I'm a third-year Mech Eng student. I've taken plenty of classes on hard subjects, so I know when a text book just plain sucks. This book does a pathetic job of explaining examples and basic concepts. I've spent hours trying to figure out assumptions that they should have just mentioned in the first place. And the poorly explained examples don't prepare you for the actual chapter problems. Because of the "wordy" writing style of the authors, basic concepts sound more complicated than they actually are; getting through the reading is a slow and tedious process.
The book is utterly sterile. The only colors you'll see inside it are black and a little blue; there isn't even a picture of an actual circuit in this book. It's like it's writen for a machine.
Poor example. The homework problems like hell.......2006-06-20
The examples which were given in the textbook were way too simple when you compare to the homework problems. Never explain how to do bode plot at all. I am glad I know how to do differential equations before taking the class, otherwise, to use the method that taught by this book, I would be dead. They never explain well on those differential equations and the concept behind.
Don't waste your time.......2005-01-18
I'm a second year EE engineering student with 20 years of electronics background in repairing, circuit analysis, and troubleshooting. This book is absolutly worthless. The auther jumps to great leaps of understanding with littel or no background to show the student how they got to those conclusions. The examples are non excistant. They use "conventional current" which is really backward to reality. It used to be called "hole theory" back in the day. Go with Boylstead or somone who has a clue about teaching. If your a beginning electronics student, forget this book, you'll be lost by the 1st chapter. There are countless problems too lengthy to go into detail here. If your school is using it, spend the extra money and get somthing to actually learn from, just to pass the course.
Give me a break........2003-02-20
If anyone tells you this is a good book, then they are receiving bribes from Prentice Hall. The only possible explanation I can think of that would explain the use of this book, is if the class is intended to 'weed out' 90 percent of the students. This is by far the most terrible excuse for a textbook I have ever seen. It teaches the most basic concepts of circuits, but yet it practically assumes you already know them, because it doesn't bother to work any examples out. If these authors were teaching nuclear physics, they would give you an intimidating equation, hand you a chunk of uranium, and expect you to build a power plant without hurting yourself. I have found countless typos (I might mention that I own the 6th edition), several problems that even my professor claims are incorrect, and most of all, I cannot follow the logic presented whatsoever. I have taken many classes that were extremely difficult, and for the most part, I have done well. However, this book presents material that is trivial in comparison, but the book goes right over my head. Only after the professor 'decodes' the text can I understand what the authors intended to say. I will also add that I took 4 semesters of calculus through a distance learning class where I had no instructor at all and got As in all of those classes. I am perfectly capable of understanding a well written book. This book is truly so poor, I would be impressed if Einstein himself didn't scratch his eyebrows off after reading it.
Please, for the love of all things sacred, complain to everyone you know about this textbook so it can disappear from the shelves of University bookstores.
Review of Introductory Circuits for Electrical and Computer.......2003-02-16
I'm sorry to say this but this book is absolutely horrible. This is my third year in college and this has to be the worst text book I've ever had. The text is not very informative and the examples are unclear. The book doesn't go into detail on most of the basic material. This is NOT a good book for an introductory level circuit analysis course.
