    Book Description

The Dynamics of Social Welfare Policy reinvents the contemporary social welfare policy textbook. Organized around the explicit premise that every kind of social work practice embodies a social welfare policy, the book develops three types of knowledge: (1) a description of social welfare policy, (2) a model for understanding any social welfare policy, and (3) tools for thinking critically about social welfare. Recognizing the fluidity of social welfare, the book also helps undergraduate and graduate students identify the triggers that lead to changes in social policy, and, in turn, influence what social workers actually do. This innovative text presents complex and challenging ideas so that all students can understand them. It reconfigures the discussion of basic policy issues--the construction of social problems, descriptions of major social welfare programs, and the purpose and functions of social welfare policy-in a fresh and accessible way. Covering all CSWE policy-required topics, the text breaks new ground as well by laying out a five-part policy model that shows how the forces of ideology, politics, history, economics, and social movements interact both to create and to change the social welfare system. Through full chapters on each component, this model explores and clarifies the complicated relationship between social policy and social change, including issues of race, class, and gender. This practical and real-world text empowers students. By making them aware of the persuasive influence of policy on practice, it prepares them as professionals in the twenty-first century to understand the past, present, and future dynamics of social welfare policy.

Recent (post-WWII) American history is a highly interesting and frequently-overlooked genre under the overall umbrella of American history study. Many tend to simply forget about it -- after all, it's hard to step back from the times in which one lives and analyze them objectively -- or shrug it off as not important. After all, we LIVED that, right? -- How can it possibly stand up as history? This overlooks the self-evident but rarely-ackwnoledged fact that merely living through something does not mean you understand it -- or, as with one aspect of contemporary American history covered in this book, the counterculture, if you remember it, the saying goes, you weren't there. Certainly, recent history is as interesting and vital as any other era to the objective historian -- and it is certainly the most applicable to our current social and political climate. One can read ancient Greek texts and see how that great society laid the foundation for what is going on at the moment -- but it is much more cognizable, not to mention jolting, when reading about something that happened much more recently, which we can clearly discern as sowing the seeds for the present day. What one often forgets when reading histories of the days of yore is that all histories are inherently prejudiced -- and even, as Oscar Wilde pointed out, autobiographical. When reading about events that one has actually lived through, this oft-forgotten fact becomes apparent.

Though individual parts of post-1945 American history have inspired volumes upon volumes, and even mini cottage industries, general, overarching texts of the period are not abundant. In Our Times is one of the most prevalent. Though this book is often used as a college textbook, it works better as a single reading than as a textbook or a reference. Certainly, it contains a wealth of good information -- but it is presented in the driest, most unimaginable way possible. Chapters are long, with little to no break in text: no captions, graphics, or eye-catching features whatsoever, and very few pictures (none in color) or graphs. Chapters are broken up only by bold typeheadings, and quite rarely at that, making it very difficult to look things up or search for something quickly; this renders the book almost useless as a reference and quite limited as a textbook. As a sit-through read, though, it is quite adequate. This book lends itself more to the historically-curious individual reader than to the student or scholar.

      2 out of 5 stars Skidmore's Administration Text.......2000-12-13

The book reads a lot like an encyclopedia. It contains a lot of good information about social work administration, but is quite dry reading.

            Book Description

The Malay Dilemma Revisited is a critical and balanced analysis of MalaysiaÂ's preferential race policy and its impact on the nationÂ's delicate race dynamics and economy. Unlike AmericaÂ's affirmative action, MalaysiaÂ's version is far more aggressive and pervasive and has been remarkably successful in creating a sizable and stable Bumiputra (indigenous group) middle class. The price tag is significant: distortion of freemarket dynamics and consequent inefficiency. Perversely, the policy impairs rather than strengthens BumiputrasÂ' ability to compete.

In contrast to quotas and other set-aside programs that are the hallmark of the current policy, the writer presents an alternative strategy aimed primarily at enhancing Bumiputra competitiveness. The proposed approach would not negatively impact the economy nor interfere with the freemarket. Equally important, it would not arouse resentment from other Malaysians. The first objective would be to modernize the nationÂ's archaic educational system to emphasize English, mathematics, the sciences, and technical training. Secondly, the influences of religious and royal institutions must be curtailed, and the rates of urbanization and population growth reduced.

The primary objective is in enhancing competitiveness, not on meeting arbitrarily picked numerical goals and targets.

5 out of 5 stars The truth being exposed at last.......2003-03-15

The author is a straight shooter, from neutral perspective unclouded by political biasness. Credit was given to those who deserve it (even to Mahathir, so no, this is not blind fury anti-Mahathir book) and vice versa. Unlike most literature on Malay politics and social issues, this one wasn't written with the intention to please any party.

Brilliant refutation on the points put forward by Dr Mahathir in his book "The Malay Dilemma" - The problem is not with the people ...(read it find out more...)

Explains accurately the evolution and factors that shapes the psyche of the Malay people and the root cause of the problems they are facing. The mistakes that the governement had done which the Malay people had to endure. The author supports his arguments (like the "Sultan syndrome") accurately by drawing from his own experiences with certain government officials.

This book is both enlightening and entertaining. The best book I have read pertaining to the issues of the Malay people. A must read to all Malaysians, especially the government officials.

            5 out of 5 stars Timely Critique of Malaysia's Socio-economic Dilemma.......2000-05-08

Thrilled to find a book that is so well written and reader friendly. This timely book not only highlights Malaysia's race relations and the shortcomings of its economic policies, but also offers refreshingly commonsensical solutions. One wonders why Malaysian leaders have not thought of them.

This book is obviously a response to the original "The Malay Dilemma," written by Mahathir Mohammad in 1970. Mahathir is now Malaysia's present Prime Minister and this book takes a critical look at his social and economic policies.

I particularly like the chapter that compares and contrasts Malaysia's race problems to that of America and that of the English/French conflict in Canada. Although the book focuses primarily on race relations in Malaysia, the author's perspectives and analyses could well apply to other multicultural nations.

This book is a must read for those interested in race relations generally, and for students of Southeast Asian Studies.

              Book Description

The Dynamics of Resilient Families is devoted specifically to qualitative family research. Encompassing a wide variety of topics, this book focuses on the resilient adaptation and creation of meaning for families facing health-related crises as well as families’ adjustments to unexpected life events and major changes. The fourth volume in the Resiliency in Families series, this book represents a diversity of approaches for collecting and analyzing qualitative data. The use of qualitative methods allows novel themes to emerge about central issues in family studies. A unique aspect of these qualitative chapters is that the researchers did not intend to study family resiliency. Instead, they set out to study families in crisis and family processes, and the resilient and growth-producing meaning of these events to families emerged as central themes. Qualitative research can add to the understanding of why families are resilient and how they are able to embrace family crises as manageable rather than insurmountable challenges. The use of qualitative methods in the study of families presents a unique opportunity for scholars to question and expand their understanding of family resiliency. Social workers, clinical practitioners, and scholars in ethnic studies, family studies, nursing, public health, sociology, counseling, and health psychology will find The Dynamics of Resilient Families a valuable resource.

By gathering together all the latest information available on the subject, Breast Cancer Basics and Beyond helps women better understand their illness and enables them to make knowledgeable choices about their care. Among the topics discussed are the pros and cons of different treatments including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy, breast reconstruction, recurrence rates, building a support team, follow-up care, and life after cancer. The book also explores current issues such as emerging therapies and examines possible links with obesity, ethnicity, and environmental factors. 5 out of 5 stars A guide easy on the eye, not mired in confusing medical terminology and a fine primer on risks.......2006-12-11

From the basics of diagnosis, treatment options and follow-up care to the latest research on treatment progression, recurrence, genetic and ethnic factors in breast cancer, and more, here's a guide easy on the eye, not mired in confusing medical terminology and a fine primer on risks for any newly diagnosed with breast cancer. There are plenty of books on the market about the subject: what differentiates this from competitors is its focus on traditional treatments, activist responses, and choices which take into account quality of life and future health concerns.

5 out of 5 stars Eyeopening, precise, well-researched.......2005-09-25

As a nurse who worked with patients through each step of treatment -- and as a breast cancer survivor myself -- I found this book to be invaluable. It is a must-have for anyone being treated for breast cancer and building a library to understand it better. That's not just because it answers many important questions but because it raises some that scientists still need to answer, especially about environmental links, links to foods, genes, obesity, etc. We need more answers in each of those areas. A chapter is devoted to breast cancer myths, which is very eyeopening. It discusses many common beliefs dangled out there as facts, which turn out not to have much science behind them, like if you eat a lot of broccoli you won't get breast cancer. For some reason many people, some health care professionals included, believe this stuff.
You can try to wade through thicker and wordier books, but for a little less money you can get this one and use your leftover cash to take yourself to a movie. That will at least allow you to take your mind off your medical problems for awhile.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and comprehensive .......2005-09-22

My oncologist had two of these books on his desk and gave me one the day I was told about my diagnosis. I started thumbing through it when I got home and could not put it down because with each page, all of the questions I had about this terrifying disease were being answered. I wound up reading it from cover to cover in two days.

The real-life stories from women and men who discuss their breast cancer experiences are invaluable and made me think how lucky I have been so far to have good, caring doctors. The author, Delthia Ricks, a medical writer for Newsday in New York, interviewed dozens of breast cancer survivors and each survivor's story is featured in little vignettes.

One woman tells how she had gotten a mammogram, which revealed a large tumor, but her doctor never called to tell her about the results of her test. When this woman went to see the doctor about a sprained ankle months later that's when the staff pulled her records and "accidentally" found the mammogram information. This woman went for months not knowing about her cancer -- and not because she wasn't doing the right thing. She did what she was supposed to do -- she got a mammogram. It was the doctor who was negligent and allowed this woman's cancer to grow and go untreated.

This book also is helpful because it shines a light on harmful myths and cautions readers about needless scare mongering that overshadows breast cancer. She lists some of these scares as underwire bras, antibiotics and seatbelts, each of which have been reported as causes of the cancer. There is no convincing evidence supporting any of these as triggers of the condition.

Ricks helps her readers understand that many studies that lead the evening news or make headlines are about preliminary research whose final results are probably years away. This is a book that I can highly recommend to anyone who has been newly diagnosed, who is in the midst of being treated for breast cancer or who may have had the cancer many years ago. It's well worth your time

The government tells us that we should eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruits daily. Unfortunately, the average person is lucky to have two servings in a typical day, children even less. In their new booklet, Drs.
