Customer Reviews:
Could be better.......2006-03-22
Very good book; could have gone a little deeper into the mechanics of the closing process.
Practical, Real-World, Current Information.......2005-10-10
This book is an easy to read, step-by-step guide through that 'magical' period called 'Escrow.' Explanations are easy to understand yet thorough. I highly recommend this book.
Complete and Easy to Read........2005-01-11
Sandy Gadow's real estate closing book explained the part of the buying process which confuses most people, and where most of the costly mistakes can occur. I was able to understand the concepts and explanations which are provided, and felt confident enough to ask questions which I am sure saved me several hundreds of dollars. Before reading Sandy's book, I was intimidated by the professionals involved in a closing: for example, the attorney and closing agent, even the inspector involved. Knowing what questions to ask, I felt comfortable making lists of questions to ask, and which answers I needed. Although real estate laws vary state to state, this book does an excellent job of being all-inclusive for each state. Whether called "escrow", "closing" or "settlement", this book covers the essentials of a real estate deal.
In each chapter are "Tips" and "A Typical Misunderstanding" which lighten the reading and make the subject matter easy to follow along. The chapter on handling Tax-Deferred Exchanges was a welcome addition to the book. I was prompted to buy Sandy's book after watching her on CNN's show, "Open House."
I would recommend this book to anyone buying property, considering entering the escrow profession, or anyone interested in the investment aspect of real estate. I am now a real estate professional and am grateful for Sandy's book. I know the book helped me and I have recommended it to many of my friends and colleagues.
Good book, but...........2005-01-04
...it's the same book as her previous books - only the title has changed. If there were any minor editing done to the book, I didn't notice. If you've read or purchased one of her previous books don't waste your time or money.
Truth in Advertising.......2004-11-08
Gadow does an excellent job of providing a comprehensive view of a California Real Estate Closing. The subject matter is appropriate and well written. The illustrations, tables, charts and forms all useful. The only real problem with a volume like this is that all real estate is essentially LOCAL in nature.
Thus, many of Gadow's points and concepts are inapposite to other parts of the country. I found myself annotating my copy with local exceptions to Gadow's statements (I am a Real Estate Attorney in the Washington, DC metropolitan area). As with any volume with this much information there are certain errors that may have not been caught by the editors. For example, Gadow talks about obtaining multiple termite inspections. "Shopping for a clean termite inspection" and failing to disclose the known existence of termites is a patent violation of the Seller's duty to disclose known defects and could subject the homeseller to serious liability for any resulting damages incurred by the buyer.
Nevertheless, for the layman this book is an essential resource and I wish everyone of my clients would read it before coming to our office for their settlements.

A cool book, but..........2006-12-09
I have Mitch Frumkin's first two books, and I must admit this one is better, picture wise. His first two contained just b&w photos and not much text. This book is wall to wall color, which really brings the ads to life; some ads are even reproduced in their original size. Very cool - A+ on that account. However, this book contains much more text, which should have been a nice compliment to the ads, but unfortunately, there are a number of errors. Yes, I realize that one person cannot possibly know every little detail, and we are constantly finding out new facts about muscle cars, but if you have the ads in front of you, and hopefully the magazines they came out of, you should know the correct years of the cars and the dates the ads ran. In other words, model year 1971 cars were not advertised in late 1969.
Also, I feel a number of historic ads were left out in this publication that should have been included. For example, there were several ads that were pulled by the manufacturers almost immediately after they ran, because they were considered too contraversial. None of these are here. Maybe Mitch wanted to offer the public some fresh material. The problem here is, his first two books are out of print. Quality used copies are going for good money and are becoming hard to find.
Aside from those two nick-picky points, overall, it is a cool book. Would make a great gift. Buy a really nice used copy, you won't be disappointed.
Nostalgia Trip.......2005-03-05
I was impressed by Muscle Car Mania and Son of Muscle Car Mania but Mitch came up trumps this time as we benefit from colour print - the best way to see the psycadelic Plymouth ads of the 60's. If you like muscle cars buy this book.

Covers Everything for the High-Tech Copywriter.......2007-09-01
Writing copy for high-tech companies is totally different than other types of copywriting. In light of that fact, this book targets an audience that needs just this type of information.
I like the way Janice explains what a "callout" is, for example. While most experienced copywriters know what it is, a novice would not. And some copywriters who don't write high-tech, might not as well.
As one reviewer says, the author does cover a lot of material. But for someone just getting into high-tech copywriting, this is almost necessary. A second book that goes into detail on a few topics is called for as a follow-up read.
I recommend this book to anyone just getting into high-tech copywriting or someone who has done a little in the area but needs more information.
Comprehensive introduction, but dry.......2007-08-30
I've reviewed a few books in the "how to write..." genre, so Janice King offered me an opportunity to look at her book. I accepted because -- unbeknownst to Janice, I suspect -- my essay on "Care & Feeding of the Press" has quietly become a top resource for press relations professionals, which is one of the audiences for this book.
There's 12 chapters here, each of which covers a different facet of marcom. The first four chapters describe project planning, from defining the audience to the writing process (which covers both working with web designers and setting the proper tone for the marketing material). Five more chapters cover process: document elements, content types, text techniques, legal and ethical issues, and international concerns. The last section gives particular attention to specific types of marcom: sales materials, alliance (partner) materials, and press materials.
Although I've written a bit of marcom materials myself (such as technical white papers), my interest was focused on the last section since, as a computer industry journalist for more than 15 years, I have seen more press materials than one can imagine.
The best and worst I can say about Copywriting That Sells High Tech is that it reads like a college textbook. The information you need is all here, well organized and accessible. But it's a data dump -- not a mentor who shares experiences as well as information.
The information she imparts is accurate. Dull, maybe -- I felt as though I'd better be taking notes for the final exam -- but accurate. For example, she lists the types of press articles that a marcom professional might be called upon to produce, such as case studies, research findings, and technology primers, and describes the elements, requirements and expectations for each. If you didn't know any of this (and I can assure you that plenty of so-called PR professionals do not), you'll have a ready made checklist for your PR kit.
However, there's no sparkle in any of it; you don't have the least sense that a treasured friend is confiding her vast experience in this subject. But maybe you don't need that. (I like sparkle, personality, a voice.)
If you're new to marcom, or you're trying to figure out if this (lucrative) sort of writing is right for you, this is an excellent book to help you get started. It may also be useful (though less so) for a businessperson who suddenly has these duties plopped on her desk. You won't learn to write an effective press release (or to write an effective anything, really) from this text, but you'll be able to check off the elements that are expected by the target audience.
Copywriting That Sells High Tech is more "what" than it is "how." There are other references for the "how to write effectively" tasks, though; turn to this book for the broad picture.
Taking on too much.......2007-06-20
I purchased this book as a textbook for a marketing communications class. The class as a whole had a few negative comments, including that the text was difficult to follow. I had no trouble following it, but King does try to cover too much material in one book. Buy this book for an overview of copywriting and read first the chapters that pertain to your particular project (something King suggests herself). Move on to other books for a more in-depth view.
The book for ALL technical writing.......2006-05-13
This book is ideal for the marketing communications writer working for a technology company. In it you will find more than 300 pages of valuable content when writing for the Web or crafting written words for any type of marketing materials. The book is loaded with tips on how to craft compelling content.
The Bible of Writing Hi-Tech Copy.......2006-05-03
I've been writing business-to-business, industrial, and high-tech marcom materials for over a quarter of a century, and I wish I had this book when I started. It's comprehensive and filled with great tips on how to write more compelling, engaging promotions for technical products.

Want to start a scrapbooking business?.......2007-10-14
I like the fact that this book covers every aspect of the scrapbooking business. Only one chapter applied to what I am interested in doing, but the rest of the book was infomative and helped me to know for sure the area of business I wanted to jump into. Great resources and lots of up to date info such as websites, government agencies to contact and other helpful books as well as the steps to follow to actually get your business up and running.
Found it interesting and helpful.......2006-02-18

Policy vs. Paperclips: Selling the Corporate Model to Your NonProfit Board.......2007-07-13
This is a wonderful book. It is very helpful in moving non-profit boards to focusing on policy versus counting paperclips. I had my entire board read it. It is a short, quick read and therefore not burdensome. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is on a non-profit board or to anyone who works with a non-profit board.Policy Vs Paperclips: Selling the Corporate Model to Your Nonprofit Board

Book Description
Do you want the key to the best jobs with the best employers? It's time to play offense instead of defense. Competency-Based Resumes shows today's job candidates a new, more targeted way to write resumes to get them back on the same playing field with the best employers and improve their odds of winning the job they want. The system an employer uses when filling jobs has changed significantly in the past few years, and it is still evolving. Rather than simply looking at an applicant's past jobs, companies are instead looking at candidate's experiences in certain key areas-including measurable work habits and the personal skills, known as competencies, used to achieve objectives at work. Competency-Based Resumes offers you a new and effective way to create resumes that emphasizes the knowledge, skills, and abilities that you have and employers need. Many sophisticated U.S. and international organizations are using competency-based systems to recruit, interview, select, and promote. Corporations such as American Express, Coca-Cola, Sears, and MetLife are all looking for specific competencies.
Customer Reviews:
Recruiters were practically knocking down my door!.......2007-03-19
This is a great book! I posted my competency-based resume on Monster.com at 2AM. By morning I had two voicemails and three emails from recruiters for interviews and over the next week I was flooded with calls and emails! I wanted to change my number! I owe it all to this book. It has several examples on competency-based resumes for various stages in your career. It teaches you how to highlight your strengths and get the job YOU want! I highly recommend it!
Results!.......2007-02-27
Since I have applied Ms. Kessler's innovative approach to my own resume, I have been selected to interview for each senior level position I have submitted for. Now the rest is up to me. I highly recommend both her books, they provide the most current techniques in competency-based and behavioral approaches to resume writing and the interview process. The format is clear and concise with excellent real-life examples across a variety of industries. A must resource!
Great if you want to know ABOUT "Competency-Based Resumes" or need a thin book to fill out a bookshelf.......2006-09-09
I bought this book largely due to the high ratings, and I am really disappointed. The book spends three or so chapters talking about why "Competency-Based Resumes" are the greatest thing ever, showing examples of "Competency-Based Resumes," telling you why they are better than the old-fashioned kind, listing companies that use this system, and basically talking all about "Competency-Based Resumes." The actual "how-to" of creating one is largely implied. The best part of the book is a list of action verbs to use in your resume, which is probably available for free from any of a number of career websites. I think I was handed a similar list in high school, with the same advice of leaving out "I" and beginning lists of skills and experiences with action verbs.
Also, I admit I'm very picky, but this book is terribly written and organized. Chapters 1,2, and 3 are repetitive - they tell you the same information in only slightly different ways several times. I know writers of how-to books like to repeat themselves in order to get their point across, but it felt like this book was trying to cleverly hide that it didn't actually have enough content to fill its 185 pages.
The way these chapters are organized confused me. Each chapter went from why to use this resume form, to who uses it, to how to use it, and back to why again -- but not always in that order. Both chapters one and two could have been condensed and made into an introduction. And I'd like to strangle the copyeditor for the bulleted lists of incomplete sentences with periods after each item. To my knowledge, that has never been acceptable punctuation. You can use periods for complete sentences, or you can use commas for a list of items with a period after the last, but not periods after each word. Ever hear of Chicago Manual of Style?
I would give it fewer stars, but I think there is *some* value for a person who loves to learn by example and wants to basically copycat the example resumes. Also, important to note that this book is really for sales professionals, human resource managers, and people in medical fields, other than physicians. The authors highlight these types of professions and don't really talk much about any others. And it would probably only really help you if you worked for a company that actually uses the competency-based resume system.
After all my bashing, I do need to admit that I did not make it through the entire book (how could I, with grammar like "...and companies who..." throughout?), and only read about the first 4 chapters. I couldn't bear it. It's not so much "excellent" as the other reviewers said as it is "circularly logical" and "cleverly ambiguous," leaving the reader "nonplussed."
If you want a good resume book, get Resume Magic -- it gives good advice and great examples in clear, logical language. Plus, the author is encouraging, which is great when you just want to find a better job.
Resume guidelines.......2006-08-08
I felt that this book gave excellent advice and guidelines in preparing resumes.
Best Resume Resource Ever!.......2006-06-17
Competency Based Resumes is an awesome resource guide for anyone putting together their resume from mid-life professionals desiring a new career to recent college graduates heading out into the corporate world. The book covers the importance of competency based resumes and provides great before-and-after examples of standard style resumes then ones transformed to competency based resumes. The book is easy to read and offers other great tips. Competency Based Resumes has allowed me to put down on paper my own competencies and professional accomplishments appropriate for my career search. Kudos to the authors of this comprehensive resume guide!
